Abstract [en]

Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the of the self-compassion scale (SCS) and to validate a Swedish version of the scale in a sample consisting of Swedish university students. Statistical analysis involving Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) of five different factor models of the SCS were performed to find the model with the best model fit. We also investigated whether Compassionate Self-responding (CS) items or Reduced Uncompassionate Self-responding (RUS) items of the scale should be distinguished as two separate constructs measuring Self-Compassion or Self-Uncompassion. In accordance with previous research done to evaluate the psychometric properties of the SCS our results indicated high internal consistency, high test-retest reliability, and a significant negative correlation with a related psychological construct such as stress, but we did not find a significantcorrelation between the SCS score and alcohol consumption. The results indicate that the SCS total score used to measure Self-Compassion as a holistic construct should be used in favour of the separate constructs of Self-Compassion or Self-Uncompassion. This has implications for the use of the SCS in research and clinical practice.
