Better together? : A qualitative study on the motives behind collaboration with focus on independent artists (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Collaboration is not a new phenomenon in the creation of music, but in recent years statistics have shown an increase in collaborations between artists. This identified trend of collaboration needs to be explored to gain an understanding of the motives behind it.

Purpose: This study aims to gain an understanding of why independent artists choose to start collaborations with other artists. The study examines the underlying motives and how these are perceived in relation to the artist and its conditions.

Method: The purpose of the study is fulfilled through a qualitative method where the focus has been to understand the individual's interpretation and perception of its reality. The empirical material has been collected using semi-structured interviews, which have later been transcribed and analyzed.

Conclusion: We have reached the conclusion that the three main motives behind collaborationare based on the concepts, co-creativity, co-creation and co-branding. These three are interconnected and thus interdependent.
