Cooperative learning in social studies education in grade 6 : Relational education as a motivational tool. (Swedish)
Abstract [sv]

The main subject of this work is to enlighten the complexity of students’ motivationin social science, with a base in ideologies such as pragmatism, cognitivism, andsocio-cultural. First, there is a brief introduction of our own experiences and thoughtsduring our teacher training, and why we chose this subject. A big part of this report isthe relationship between students and teachers, and how we as future teachers areresponsible for creating an encouraging environment for our students. The methodthat has been used is interviews with six different teachers that are currently workingin middle school. All teachers have at least ten years’ experience of teaching, but notall of them have social studies as their main subject. The work is based on previous Dewey, Piaget, and Vygotsky research. We havechosen these three researchers as they all play an important role in how we createmotivation through cooperative learning. Dewey stands for the practical perspective,Piaget stands for the cognitive process that takes place in the student, and Vygotsky'sideology explains the interaction between individuals. In the last part of this work, we discuss the answers we received in our interviewsand connect them to our previous research. Our goal is to create a clear view for thereaders of how relational pedagogy affects students’ motivation. In the last part, wewill give our thoughts on this subject and for future research.
