Medical and nursing students’ perceptions about patients’ involvement in interdisciplinary bedside rounds: A qualitative interview study

Ward round is a central hospital activity. Interprofessional bedside round (IBR) is when multiple healthcare professionals gather at the patient’s bedside to discuss care and treatment. The patient-centeredness model presupposes patients’ involvement in their care discussion, still previous research has shown that patients are not involved in IBR to that extent they could be. The present study aimed to explore medical and nursing students’ perceptions about patients’ involvement in interdisciplinary bedside rounds. Medical and nursing students participate in IBR during their practical education. The study was carried out at two sites in Sweden: University clinic and County hospital. Eighteen informants participated in one-to-one interviews to answer the aim of the study. The results yielded five categories: ‘Communicational facilitators of involvement’, ‘Interaction barriers to involvement’, ‘Variety in patients’ health literacy’, ‘Caregivers’ influence on involvement’, and ‘Pliable patients’ role’. Each one of these categories subsumed two to five sub-categories. Two subthemes and one theme of meaning emerged in the latent analysis. The theme of meaning reads as follows: “At hospital rounds a patient is a respected guest, but still with a disadvantaged alien status due to the hosts’ difficult medical language and unclear routines”. In conclusion, students perceive patients are still not fully involved in IBR, and their involvement is influenced by the healthcare team due to patients’ lack of knowledge, vulnerable state, hectic hospital environment, and complicated medical language.
