"But they didn't protect me, they threw me under the bus, because they are also scared of him." : A study on social secretaries and the emotional support in case of client-perpetrated threats and violence (English)
Abstract [en]
Previous research suggests that violence and threats from clients is a recurring theme in social work. Especially so for the social workers aiming to protect children in varying ways in their work. In this study we aim to examine the importance of emotional support, in situations of violence and threats from clients, for child protection social workers. What emotional support that exists for social workers, how they perceive it, what they deem as necessary and what they potentially might be missing in the form of emotional support. To accomplish this we’ve executed eight qualitative semi-structured interviews with social-secretaries working at a child and family unit in Sweden. The results indicate that some forms of emotional support are thoroughly utilized and needed, such as support from colleagues, supervisors and work management. If there is a lack of support from these, chances are that the emotional support is not perceived as enough. Also, every social-secretaries need for emotional support is relatively different as they usually perceive threatening situations in different ways.
