Reuse of industrial heritage to increase social development - Fröseke (English)
Abstract [en]
The derelict complexes from the industrial era, which are especially valued for their rich heritage and clearcut architecture, have gained more attention in recent years. This has brought an increased commercial interest not only from the private, but also public sector. How can these values strengthen the social growth of small communities in the Swedish countryside?Fröseke is a former industrial town in eastern Kronoberg, which previously had several major production operations. Many buildings within the glass industry in Småland are currently empty and deteriorating over time. This thesis examines development opportunities for the town of Fröseke and its industrial heritage, from an architectural design perspective. The paper aims to result in design guidelines that can be used to produce development proposals regarding increased community growth. The method used in the study includes literature studies, interviews, and study visits to provide an overall picture of Fröseke as a society and its industrial heritage. The result, which includes design guidelines, is divided between two parts, Fröseke as a whole and upper Fröseke. Each part’s design is described from three perspectives: landmark level, block level and street level. The main conclusions that can be drawn from the study are that a design program with guidelines that consider the community’s cultural heritage can be produced using the chosen method, and that this program can be used in urban planning.
