This chapter proposes that heritage destruction can be seen as a medium and manifestation of dynamic transformation that ultimately allows more sustainable forms of development to emerge, not least when seen in the context of long-term change. Using insights from current debates on heritage futures and examples from cultural history, we argue that Heritage Studies needs a critical and open-minded discussion of the existing and potential effects of cultural heritage in society, potentially even developing a code of not simply conservation but destruction, change, and decay.
