Abstract [fr]

Abstract [en]

This article based on a study conducted in a university course in Sweden examines how the teaching of francophone literature can contribute to a better understanding of the impact of (post)colonial heritage by generating the students’ empathy for a novel’s main characters. The focus lies on the narrative and didactic means that facilitate students’ emotional immersion, thus contributing to a better understanding of the Other in certain socio-cultural situations, particularly those existing in (post-)colonial conditions. The research is based on the theories of narrative empathy within the framework of the reception of fictional texts, notably as defined by Suzanne Keen (2007) and Brigitte Scheele (2004). The result shows that student empathy is strongest in passages in which the characters express their feelings allowing the reader to understand their motives. Empathy enables diverse perspectives as it also can be generated by antipathic or ambitious characters. The study shows that the didactic approach has to leave room for student’s subjectivity.
