The construction of otherness : A postcolonial and decolonial study of the story "Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes" by Gabriel García Márquez (English)
Abstract [en]
The story "Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes" presents an intercultural encounter between a being considered to be an angel and the people from a caribbean community.
The purpose is to study how people create different interpretations of otherness in the main character and the replication of colonial dynamics through the story. As a method, hermeneutics will be used mainly, as well as the theoretical bases of narratology in one part of the analysis.
In order to respond to the objectives, the postcolonial and decolonial theories of the authors Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha and Walter Mignolo will be taken into account.
It is shown that the main character embodies the subaltern silence by lacking an enunciative position in the story through an unequal relationship of power and authority. Likewise, the limitation of the characters to understand another reality beyond their knowledge is observed.
