Over the last years there has been increased awareness concerning the topics of women and nature and their relevance, taking into consideration the roles that both have developed throughout centuries in our society.

Nature has been considered an easy target to be dominated and exploited, just like women have been deemed as fragile and inferior creatures in comparison to men. In Latin America there is a long history of oppression due to European colonization, which has included maltreatment of and disputes with the indigenous population who inhabited the region long before the Europeans arrived.

This thesis is supported by the ecofeminist theory that helps us to analyze if there is a relation between humanity and nature, gender roles and the battle against sexism and patriarchy, aiming for a more balanced and fair society for human beings and the nonhuman ones too. (Fernández, 2017)

The objective of this study is, firstly, to interpret the characters of six women from the novel The inhabited woman, taking into consideration gender roles, bearing in mind the sociocultural context that the novel takes place (the 1970s) and the memories of the Spanish colonization. Secondly, to analyze if the female characters are placed in a submissive position compared to the male ones or, contrastingly, if the women occupy a prominent place and are in a position of decision making.

This piece of writing concludes, after the hermeneutic analysis, that the main character Lavinia has shown traces of being a fighter against gender discrimination since early on in her life and that she eventually takes her place as a woman who makes her own decisions. Her aunt, Inés, also has an important role and is assigned a prominent place in the story. Itzá´s character, who alternates the narrative voice with Lavinia, is also classified as a character with independence and that has a notable function in the novel. One of the characters categorized as a friend of Lavinia, Flor, fights against social and political inequality and against gender discrimination. In contrast, another friend called Lucrecia can´t really be easily classified, as on the other hand she also exhibits traces of subservience. When it comes to Sara, Lavinia´s childhood friend, based on the analysis of the novel, it is concluded that she has a subordinate female role.  

 Al largo de los últimos años ha habido un crecimiento de consciencia sobre los temas mujer y naturaleza y su importancia llevando en consideración el papel que ambas han desarrollado durante siglos en nuestra sociedad.

La naturaleza ha sido vista como un recurso fácil de ser dominado y explotado, juntamente como la mujer que ha sido considerada un ser frágil y de cierta forma inferior al hombre. En Latinoamérica, tenemos una fuerte herencia de explotación por medio de la colonización europea paralelamente a los enfrentamientos y dominación de la población indígena que ya vivía en la región.

Esta tesina se basa en el marco teórico del ecofeminismo que nos ayuda a analizar si hay en los textos literarios estudiados ejemplos de la relación entre la humanidad y la naturaleza, los roles de género y también la lucha contra el machismo y del patriarcado en busca de una sociedad más justa para los humanos y no humanos. (Fernández, 2017).

El objetivo de esta tesina, en primer lugar, es interpretar el papel de seis personajes mujeres en la obra La mujer habitada considerando aspectos de género y teniendo en cuenta el contexto sociocultural en que la obra se pasa, los años de 1970, y la memoria de la colonización española. En segundo lugar, analizar si los personajes femeninos se encuentran en una posición de subordinación ante los masculinos o si, por el contrario, las mujeres ocupan un lugar de relieve y toma de decisiones.

Después de un análisis llevado a cabo con el método hermenéutico, se concluye que el personaje principal, Lavinia, es marcado desde muy temprano por la lucha contra la discriminación de género y hace cargo de sus propias decisiones. Tía Inés también fue una mujer que ocupó un lugar de relieve en la obra. El personaje de Itzá que alterna la voz narrativa con el personaje de Lavinia es otro que se clasifica como un personaje de autonomía y relieve en la obra. Unos de los personajes clasificados como la amiga de Lavinia, Flor, lucha por justicia social y política y contra la discriminación de género. En contraste, la amiga Lucrecia no se puede definir totalmente, pues trae rasgos de autonomía, pero también de subordinación. En cuanto a Sara, amiga de infancia de Lavinia, a través del análisis se concluye que es un personaje que se encuentra en una posición de subordinación ante los masculinos.
