Climate activism in the Swedish democratic state : A multi-case study of Swedish media (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to research how news sources has reported on and valued two climate actions and the state under rule of law reacting to these actions. The study research how valuation and reporting from these sources can be related to each other. In this multi-case study the news sources Sveriges Television, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet are treated as cases. Whitin each case the blockades of the Swedish parliament in March 2024 and of the oil port in Malmö in July 2023 acts as units of analysis. The theoretical framework is based on the rule of law and two major views of democracy, liberal and participatory. Sveriges Television stands out when includingparticipants whit different views of democracy in discussions on activism. Activists and people representing the rule of law are represented in all cases. The result suggests that Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet has a liberal view of democracy. Therefore the newspapers are critical to lawbreakingactivism. These cases also focus on repercussions to a further extent than Sveriges Television. The results points at Svenska Dagbladet as slightly stronger in these positions than Dagens Nyheter.
