Abstract [en]

Aim

This research investigates the factors that influence safety and well-being in a shelter for migrants and refugees in Mexico, using Bronfenbrenner's bioecological model as a theoretical lens. It seeks to understand how processes, individual characteristics, context, and time interplay to shape refugees' perceptions and experiences in a shelter.

Approach

A qualitative multi-method approach was employed, including semi-structured interviews with ten refugees living in the shelter. Document analysis and observations were also used to contextualize the findings. Bronfenbrenner's Process-Person-Context-Time (PPCT) model guided the research design and analysis.

Findings

The shelter proved to be a dynamic and supportive environment that fosters a sense of belonging and community among residents. Positive interactions with staff, comprehensive services, and opportunities for personal growth contributed to refugees' perceptions of safety and well-being. The shelter's protective role was highlighted in contrast to external security concerns. However, the small sample size and inconsistent data collection limited the depth of analysis, particularly regarding the influence of individual characteristics and temporal aspects.

Conclusion

Despite its limitations, this qualitative study offers valuable glimpses into the lived experiences of refugees in a shelter in Mexico. The findings underscore the significance of a comprehensive, person-centered approach in shelter support systems. Further research with larger, more diverse samples and longitudinal designs is needed to better understand the long-term impact of shelter environments on refugee safety, well-being, and integration.
