The Increased Client Control and the Deprofessionalized Secondary School Teacher
Växjö University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Social Sciences. Sociologi.
2008 (Swedish)Conference paper, Published paper (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
Abstract [sv]

Increased client control and decreased professional control over professional work is a common feature in modern sociological approaches to the discussion and analysis of the professions in contemporary society. This situation is even more obvious among the so-called semiprofessions because of their, not always fruitful, ambition of professionalization. When discussing the profession of upper secondary school teachers in Sweden this means increased opportunities for pupils and parents to demand and even question the everyday-work carried out by teachers. The situation can be described as a dilemma where teachers need to balance their work between demands of influence from democratically informed clients in coalition with the state on one side, and the ambition for professional status and autonomy on the other. Upper secondary school teacher professional knowledge stem, to a higher degree than other teacher groups, from the special academic subject they are teaching and the actual work has not its origin in teaching methods, learning or didactics. This means that upper secondary school teacher professional status is vulnerable when client demanding alternative forms of learning and more informed didactics. The effect could be interpreted as a process of deprofessionalization.
