How to organize with the aim of securing the digital cultural heritage is the main interest of this paper. We provide a description of the current situation at an authority that deals with this question, and its personnels’ view of their assignment. The objective for our analysis and discussion is to explore the suitability of the Viable System Model as organizing principle for long-term digital preservation. We have found that the model elucidates several important aspects, such as coordinating functions and information and communication channels. In addition it provides the advantage of a holistic perspective, as well as attention to the environment. These aspects are crucial for long-term digital preservation. Therefore, we find the model suitable since it clarifies necessary processes and functions if the digital cultural heritage is to prevail.
