Abstract [en]

The article contains a discussion about the nature of the armed conflicts in early modern Timor (17th-18th centuries) which involved the colonial powers of Portugal and the Dutch East Indies Company (VOC). It is argued that the term rebellion for these movements does not quite cover the situation. Rather, the relatively weak colonial centres in Kupang and Lifau were involved in a complex pattern of factionalism, the elements of which are analyzed in the present text.
