English vocabulary teaching in Swedish and

Abstract [en]

By means of a qualitative study amongst teachers in Sweden and South Africa this essay intends to show the differences and similarities between how some teachers in the two countries look upon English vocabulary teaching. The study was conducted with teachers who taught in lower and upper secondary school. One cannot say that the interviewed teachers are representatives for the entire country, but they might give a hint about different approaches to vocabulary teaching in the two countries.

This study shows that there are many different ways of teaching, learning and testing, vocabulary, both in theory and in practice. It further shows the different ways of interpreting what it means to know a word.

There were indeed differences in how the teachers in the two countries taught vocabulary, such as focus on writing or pronunciation. These differences might be explained by the different proficiency levels of the students in the two countries, but we cannot conclude that this is the only reason. There is also the factor that individual people teach in different ways.
