Abstract [en]

The objective with this essay is too analyzed how the public discourse in the 1970: s, as it was channelled by the media, both shaped and got shaped by the important social movements at the time. Too do that I have chosen too follow the debate about the so called wage earner funds in the local Kalmar news papers, Östran and Barometern. The first being a classical outlet for the workers union and social democratic party in Sweden, and the second a more business oriented paper. The reason I chose the wage earner founds is because the debate explicitly captures the two major parts that too a large degree formed the Swedish society, both the practical politics and the public discourse – the right and left wing. At the time a change from the fordistic production paradigm towards the high tech, service minded production paradigm was under way in most of the western world and my aim is too see how both sides tried too use the debate over the wage earner funds too shape this change. The major problems that I want too capture is which part that is the offensive one in the debate, if it’s what I call a hegemonic project (meaning that they are systematically trying too shape the public discourse too fit there power purposes) and how the discourse relates too practical social changes around that time. Too accomplish this I have chosen Norman Furloughs critical discourse analyse that I see as constructed too capture the relationship between the discourse and the bigger social picture. My conclusions is that the debate about the wage earner funds seem too have been an arena for shaping the public discourse at the time, do in large too its highly ideological character. Even though the idée came from the worker unions the business oriented paper (Barometern) quickly became the offensive part in the debate. At first the debate somewhat unconsciously started shaping the discourse towards the right, but during the second and especially third period the business oriented paper adopted a more systematic strategy, that I call a hegemonic project. Both papers changed there discourses towards a more liberal tone (in the Swedish meaning of the word liberal). I finally conclude that the public discourse in many ways was ahead of the practical political and social changes and in that case helped shape there outcome.
