Blästbrukslämningar i Brånahult: aArkeologisk förundersökning av RAÄ 332 med flera lämningar 2008 : Brånahult 1:8, Madesjö socken, Nybro kommun, Småland

2009 (Swedish)Report (Other academic)
Abstract [en]

This report presents the results from an archaeological trial excavation carried out in December 2008 at Brånahult, parish of Madesjö, Småland, southeast Sweden. The investigation was caused by plans of expanding a stone quarry into an area with previously recorded bloomery remains, RAÄ 332. A trial excavation performed in september 2008 just to the northeast of the present investigation area aimed at delimiting the bloomery remains towards the northeast. The exploitation plans have changed since the first trial excavation, and thus the aim of the present trial excavation was to delimit and establish the chronology, state of preservation, content and scientific potential of the bloomery and possibly other remains within an area of around 40 000 m2 to the south and west of the bloomery RAÄ 332. The investigation managed to clearly delimit the previously recorded bloomery site, and also to locate another similar but smaller bloomery site less than 100 m from the first one. Apart from these, two charcoal production sites, a stone quarry site, three clearance cairns and another heap of slag some 100-150 m to the northwest of the bloomery sites were found. Within the bloomery sites several well preserved stone constructions were identified. Samples of slag were ocularily analysed, and the results suggest that iron production on the site has been quite extensive. Three 14C-dated place the activities in the Middle Ages, around AD 1280-1460. Based on the results of the trial excavation, Kalmar County Museum suggests that any exploitation of the area should be pre- ceeded by an archaeological excavation of the two bloomery sites. Decision in this matter is taken by the County Administrative Board in Kalmar.
