Abstract [en]

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the possibility of adapting the translation of a Swedish Government Official Report for a wider group of readers, more specifically, the readers of a British political journal. Two research questions are posed and the first one addresses the pragmatic adaptations required to allow the new readership to set all information in its context and to draw inferences. The adaptations that were implemented in the translation include a number of additions and omissions and special attention is given to the translation of proper names and terms denoting different kinds of reports. The second research question pertains to the aspects that make the source text more or less suitable for the intended adaptation. Aspects that make the Source Text suitable for the readers of a political journal are its topic and certain aspects of its content. Aspects that make the source text less suitable for the envisaged target reader pertain to terminology and, also, to certain aspects of its content.
