Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with the semantic structure of the abstract noun freedom. The new qualia structure theory by Pustejovsky (1995) and the modified version of this theory by Frännhag (2010) were adapted an tested on four native speakers of English in a case study with three exercises. The aim of this thesis was to provide an in-depth semantic description of freedom. Moreover, it was also of interest to ascertain if it is possible to use the qualia structure theory with abstract nouns in general and with the noun freedom in particular. Furthermore, the aim was totest if it is possible for native speakers of English to sort adjective collocates of freedom into the four quales. In the three exercises of the case study the informants were first asked to analyse the meaning of freedom in general with the help of four quales (formal quale, constitutive quale, agentive quale and telic quale). Secondly, the test persons were asked to answer a questionnaire regarding their own analysis of the different meaning facets of the quales that freedom could carry. These meaning facets were sorted into the different quales. Moreover, 100 adjectives collocates of freedom were tested with this method in the case study. The adjective collocates were the first 100 in COCA (Corpus of contemporary American English). It was concluded that the qualia structure theory and the used method caused many problems for the analysis. One examples of the problems are the uncertainties of how to define the different quales properly. Nevertheless, it was also shown that the theory provides many opportunities for the analysis of abstract nouns, such as the possibility to go into a very in-depth analysis of the smallest meaning differences and facets in the different quales. The native speakers were able to sort the adjectives into the different quales and they gave an in-depth analysis of the semantic structure of the noun freedom. In sum, it can be concluded that the qualia structure theory can be used for the analysis of abstract nouns, but the material and method would need some improvements in further studies.
