Swedish teenage boys do not read as much as the society would like them to. Many domestic investigations over the years show the same results, namely that younger men reject books and that many of them do not read in school either. They prefer other things.
I decided to do a minor investigation among the male students who attend the upper secondary school where I teach. I wanted to find out the actual situation when it comes to literacy. And if possibly compare it with the prior results made on national level. Do my students read? What is their attitude towards literature? What strategies do the students apply when choosing a text? If they don´t read, why is that? What do the teenagers think about the books that the school makes them read? Have they any opinion about the methods their teachers use during literature classes?
To achieve my goals and be able to answer my questions I made an investigation based on a questionnaire and five interwievs plus read relevant literature. My result shows that the students who took part in my investigation do read. In that respect they did not differ from the outcome of different studies on national level. These students display the same attitude towards literature that previous researchers have shown in their studies. Therefore, apart from a mere presentation about the boys´ reading habits, I comment the reasons that exist behind the boys´ interest or lack there of when it comes to literature.
