Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka sjökaptensstudenters attityder till att arbeta med utländska befäl. De som studerar till sjöbefäl får räkna med att arbeta med befäl och besättningar som kommer från andra nationer än Sverige. För att undersöka respondenternas attityder har kvalitativ metod med semistrukturerade intervjuer använts. Detta för att ge respondenterna möjlighet att med egna ord beskriva deras erfarenheter som format deras attityder. Respondenterna i studien är sex stycken sjökaptensstudenter från olika årskurser och med varierande erfarenhet. Studien är uppdelad i tre teman, kommunikation & språk, ledarskap och det sociala livet ombord. Resultaten visar att ingen respondent varit negativ till att arbeta med utländska befäl. Majoriteten har varit neutrala och resterande har varit positiva eller mycket positiva till att arbeta med utländska befäl, helst med en helt blandad besättning. Överlag har det fungerat bra enligt respondenternas uppfattningar. Det har generellt varit ett rakt och tydligt ledarskap, oavsett befälens ursprung. Även kommunikation från befälen har varit rakt och tydligt, detta har samtliga respondenter ansett varit positivt.

The purpose of this study is to examine sea captain student’s attitude towards working together with foreign officers. Those who study to become a sea officer in Sweden have to count on that they will work together with officers and crew that come from other nations than Sweden. A qualitative method with semi-structured interviews has been used to examine the respondent’s attitudes. This method has been used to give the respondents the possibility to explain, with their own words about their experiences witch have formed their attitudes. The respondents in this study is six sea captain students from different grades and with different experiences. The study is divided in to three themes; communication & language, leadership and the social life onboard. The results show that none of the respondents have a negative attitude towards working with foreign officers. The majority was neutral and the rest were positive or very positive towards working with foreign officers, preferably with a completely mixed crew. Overall it have worked well according to the respondents’ perception. It has generally been a straight and clear leadership. The communication has also been straight and clear from the officers’ side, this is something the respondents have agreed is something positive.
