The purpose of this study was to examine middle leader's experience of working with national values in their daily work. The study is based on the questions; what are the opportunities and challenges that national values represent in relation to the elderly, staff and organizational frameworks? Through qualitative interviews with sex middle leaders the result showed that the national values strengthened older people's self-determination and provide more individualized care. The most prominent opportunities in daily work were older people's ability to communicate their needs. The conditions which were challenging was when the elder had difficulties with communicating. The factors of the staff who brought both opportunities and challenges of working with the national values in their daily work was their own desires and values. Based on the organizational frameworks the result shows that work with individualized care become challenging when it is low staffing and lack of time. In some situations, there could be conflicts between national values different keyvalues, which meant that staff could go against self-determination and instead protect older people's dignity.
