Abstract [en]

Organizational culture is, according to many researchers, a complex subject in which many different aspects and dimensions have to be taken in consideration. The Swedish Armed Forces is an organization that often is being referred to as having a strong and clear-cut culture. What has to be taken in consideration, however, is that it is a big organization consisting of many employees working in different areas of the organization. The aim of this thesis is to explain what characterizes the organizational culture in a specific department within The Swedish Armed Forces and what impact the culture has on the social relationships among employees working in the department. The collecting of data, as well as the processing of the material, have been inspired by the principles of `grounded theory`, meaning here that the material and analysis are based on interviews and participant observation as a “first hand material” instead of already existing theories. The interviews and observations reveal that the organizational culture is characterized by a cultural gap between civilian and military employees. As a result, the organizational culture is divided into two subcultures in which civilian and military employees identify with other members of their own group.
