Abstract [en]

This essay is an analysis of a text translated from French into Swedish. The text is a sales manual which is meant to be used by travel agents who want to make their customers interested in visiting Senegal.

The sales manual is supposed to be used in France, and is therefore adapted to French conditions. The country that is presented, Senegal, is a former French colony and a great deal of the information in the text is most certainly familiar to a French reader. The most important challenge for the translator in this case is to make the information accessible and useful to a Swedish reader.

The essay presents the strategies described by Brynja Svane in Hur översätter man verkligheten? and by Vinay & Darbelnet in Stylistique comparée du français et de l’anglais. These strategies are then applied to the text that has been translated.

The analysis shows that the strategies that are most useful when translating this type of text are the ones that Svane calls addition, adaptation, transfer and omission. Parts of the text have to be either removed completely or changed in order for the text to be understood and useful to Swedish readers. Sometimes the translator also needs to add explanations either as footnotes or in the text itself.
