Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In Sweden, the association between love and sex has declined among young people, resulting in more sexual partners, especially during their stays abroad. The number of students who choose to pursue their studies abroad has increased in recent decades. Before departure, exchange students are invited to attend information meetings where preventive measures are included. Objective: The objective was to describe the exchange students' health and sexual behaviour associated with their exchange studies as well as examines the extent to which they receive preventive measures on HIV/STI and safer sex before departure. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with the help of an online questionnaire that included questions about sexual health, self-esteem and psychological well-being. Data were analysed using descriptive and analytical statistics. Results: A total of 136 outgoing exchange students from University participated. Most of the exchange students had good health and psychological well-being and rated their self-esteem as being high. Half of the exchange students had sex with a new partner during the exchange semester, and out of these students, 87% showed sexually risky behaviour. More than half of the exchange students had been exposed to health promotion before departure, and the group that showed sexually risky behaviour desired free condoms and access to clinics for sexual health. Conclusion: Exchange students had good health, and many participated in information sessions that address preventive efforts on HIV/STI and safer sex before departure. A group of students exhibited sexually risky behaviour during the exchange semester and lacked access to clinics for sexual health. The essence of health promotion is to strengthen people's own ability to make healthy choices. Consequently, we can reduce the number of sexually transmitted infections and the number of unplanned pregnancies, resulting in both economic benefits and health benefits for the individual as well as for society.
