A qualitative study of threats and violence, stories of social workers who works with individuals who abuse alcohol and drugs. (English)
Abstract [en]
The aim of this qualitative study was to understand and analyze how Swedish social workers define and prevent threats and violence at the workplace. The social workers that we interviewed were to help people who abuse alcohol and drugs. The aim was also to understand which causes the social workers could see how that the threats and violence arose. The study was based on eight individual semi-structured interviews in three different municipalities, but not in a comparative purpose. The empirical data were analyzed with the help of Erving Goffman´s dramaturgical perspective and social constructivism. The main results of the study showed that social workers were not exposed to major violent situations. There was no clear definition of threats and violence, instead the definitions were individually experienced. The result also showed that the social workers had a preventative approach against threats and violence. The causes of unwanted situations were linked to authorities compelling elements and exercise of power.
