Abstract [en]

The aim of our research is to investigate and disclose whether there is a dependency between the terms motivation (intrinsic-extrinsic) and ethnic identity in ELE pupils inprimary and secondary Swedish school. Our aim is to investigate whether the degree of motivation to study Spanish has or has not a statistic correlation to the degree of the Spanish speakers own ethnic identity. In this way we intend, not only, to show the extent to which ethnically Scandinavian students of ELE appreciate variables of the Hispanic culture, but also study if the degree of motivation for ELE students involves sharing those hispanic ethnicity variables. Our secondary aim is to determine thedominant types and degree of motivation in ELE students to see if we are able to find interesting tendencies of significance that might influence their academic performance. We have opted for the use of a method that adapts to the descriptive correlational models for establishing possible relationships between the variables motivation and ethnic identity. The questionnaire used consists of a statistical method based on surveys of attitudes and perceptions in which personal information and affirmations measure student’s levels of agreement and disagreement (Likert ordinal scale). To statistically measure the possible correlations between the variables studied, it has been applied the mathematical model, Coefficient Chi-square (p). The questionnaire shows the results of 297 students of ELE, the result shows that a correlation between motivation (intrinsic-extrinsic) and ethnic identity in theELE students, who participated in our study, exists. However the sample has detected that the correlation has a higher significance in primary school students than in high school students. The reasons why will not be defined in this study, because this is not part of our specific goal. Finally, our study, reflects that the dominant type of motivation is the Instrumental (intrinsic) one due that getting a good degree in ELE, for the ethnically Scandinavian students, creates and implicates, not only, a better position in accessing future further studies but also reinforces the students "curriculum vitae”.
