Abstract [en]

The concept of environmental sustainability has received much attention the last years. With globalization of the world's economy, the practices of corporations have received far-reaching effects and business has been left to their own devices to meet environmental standards. This paper develops the argument that environmental sustainability can accelerate the progress of a company. This can be achieved with the optimization of the triple bottom line, by taking advantage of the benefits of environmental sustainability, by overcoming the barriers and with the means of environmental regulation. In this thesis, the focus is on the different company’s abilities to gain profit, not just from an economic perspective, but from an environmental perspective as well. It provides certain arguments that sustainability and managing an organisation are potentially complimentary, not contradictory. Four case studies are provided in order to demonstrate how environmental sustainability can be considered to be an advantage for the financial outcome of a company.
