Abstract [en]

This study deals with the concept of historical consciousness and pupils views on the history teaching they receive in school. The focus of this survey is on how the pupil feels that it has the knowledge that (according to previous research and my personal understanding of the concept) is required to develop a sense of historical consciousness. The study is of quantitative in nature where a questionnaire survey is the basis for my source data. The participants in the survey are three 8th grade classes from the same school, in the county of Örebro. My method is interwoven with my theory where the concept of historical consciousness and identity is defined and clarified with the help of previous research within the subject. Seen on the basis of my theory, I believe that the students at the high school does not receive the teaching required in order to develop a sense of historical consciousness. My results show that in many cases my theory is true since the majority of students do not feel that they are given the space to reflect on historical events, they are not receiving teaching that relate to their own life, and the teaching they receive does not connect the past, present, and future.
