    Abstract [en]

    The Master thesis explores the knowledge sharing that takes place during the requirement engineering phase of globally distributed information systems development. In recent years, due to globalization, information systems development activities have become increasingly distributed across different geographical locations. Requirement engineering is an important and knowledge intensive phase in the development of information systems. Requirement engineering is the process of identifying, analyzing, documenting, validating and managing the requirements of a system. Effective and efficient knowledge sharing during the requirement engineering is vital for the successful development of information systems. However, the global distribution of the stakeholders has affected knowledge sharing during requirement engineering in various ways making it more challenging.

     

    Drawing on the theories of knowledge sharing within the field of information systems, this interpretive research study aims at exploring stakeholders’ perceptions about the challenges met during the knowledge sharing in requirement engineering phase of globally distributed information systems development projects. More specifically, this Master thesis explores the perceived challenges and generates a list of suggestions to overcome the challenges by conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews among the key stakeholders, both customers and business analysts.

     

    The findings indicate that the knowledge sharing is influenced by challenges such as cultural differences, language barriers, communication issues, coordination issues arising from multiple stakeholders, time difference and difficulty in sharing tacit knowledge in the globally distributed settings. Participants’ suggestions for overcoming these challenges include cultural trainings, kick off meetings, language trainings, use of translator, face-to-face communication and interaction, video conferencing, scheduling important meetings in the common suitable timings, identification of the main stakeholders, having a mediator and making close observations with face-to-face interactions.

    Abstract [en]

    A shift in water monitoring approach from traditional grab sampling to novel wireless sensors is gaining in popularity not only among researchers but also in the market. These latest technologies readily enable numerous advantageous monitoring arrangements like remote, continuous, real-time, and spatially-dense and broad in coverage measurements, and identification of long-term trends of parameters of interest. Thus, a WSN system is implemented in a river in Kosovo as part of the InWaterSense project to monitor its water quality parameters. It is one of the first state of the art technology demonstration systems of its kind in the domain of water monitoring in developing countries like Kosovo. Water quality datasets are transmitted at pre-programmed intervals from sensing stations deployed in the river to the server at university via the GPRS network. Data is then made available through a portal to different target groups (policy-makers, water experts, and citizens). Moreover, the InWaterSense system behaves intelligently like staying in line with water quality regulatory standards.

    För att få en djupare förståelse för hur yta kan frigöras och användas har en studie genomförts på Villa VIDA som idag inte har tillräckligt med fri yta för kapacitetsökning. När nuläget analyserades kunde det konstateras att lagerbildningar på produktionsyta och ett måleri var det som hindrade företaget från att expandera. Baserat på det nuvarande läget genererades två alternativa layouter. I det ena förslaget valdes outsourcing av måleriet för att frigöra ännu mer yta och få plats med en kapacitetsökning på 50 % istället för 25 % som hade blivit resultatet om måleriet bevarats. Åtgärder som frigjorde yta innebar reducering av antal lagringspunkter och minskade orderkvantiteter. Vid utvärdering blev resultatet att företaget bör satsa på förslaget där måleriet är outsourcat då detta bidrar med ekonomiska så väl som flödesrelaterade fördelar samtidigt som ytan används på ett effektivare sätt.

    Abstract [en]

    In Sweden seven courts has been appointed to specialize in admiralty law cases. These cases are either civil or criminal cases with connection to shipping on Swedish territory.

    The objective was to examine and describe the admiralty law verdicts over time with focus on what types of cases, differences between courts and variation over time. The study focused on merchant shipping.

    Study of literature was chosen as method and with follow-up questions interviews were made with agencies and experts. The literature in this study was the 153 verdicts that were announced between 2009 and 2013.

    Of all verdicts collected were five civil cases and 148 criminal cases with 13 classifications. The largest difference between the courts was the sum of verdicts. A change over time could not be observed.

    Other conclusions that were made were that ships’ masters, that have the utmost responsibility, avoided prosecution when they were not present for the event of the prosecution.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper a sequential method for the selection of maintenance technique for mechanical systems is presented. It is based on technical knowledge concerning component failure mechanisms and failure causes. Classification of failures according to their consequences is stated. A modified version of failure modes, effects and criticality analysis is given and a way to identify significant components is discussed. Analysis of collected data is discussed and a method to identify a replacement level of a monitoring parameter is proposed. Criteria for the selection of a monitoring technique based on the intrinsic information of monitoring parameters are introduced. Finally, a decision rule for the selection of a suitable maintenance technique is suggested and a modified expression of the long run average cost per unit time is used as a distinguishing criterion between applicable strategies.

    Abstract [en]

    Profitable production demands continuously improved maintenance decision accuracy to reduce unplanned stoppages, prolong components/machines  life length and maintain production continuity. When CM, e.g. vibration level or oil temperature, value exceeds a warning level, it demands a clear understanding of what happened and how it will develop to avoid failures. It demands also reliable information, e.g. probability of failure, residual  life and when is the most profitable time for maintenance. Companies strive to reduce production cost through reducing non-value adding times, e.g. failures, for offering customers lower prices and generating additional competitive advantages. In this paper, a new tool (Prediction of Vibration and oil temperature, PreVib) for predicting the condition of a turbine, generator and gearbox is introduced,  discussed and tested. The solution offers a unique opportunity to achieve just in time dynamic and cost-effective maintenance by selecting the most profitable time for maintenance. PreVib is tested in a power plant. The major results: Failures can appreciably be reduced thanks the high precision of prediction ( + 90%), i.e. a negligible difference from the real measurement: PreVib does not demand extensive or additional data, and not replace available maintenance systems. The major conclusion is that applying PreVib, it is possible to reduce failures appreciably, prolong life length of components/equipment and perform profitable maintenance

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper a graphical method for the selection of a cost-effective monitoring technique is suggested. Also, a graphical method to estimate the level at which components should be replaced when using a cost-effective technique, i.e. threshold level, is proposed. These two methods are based on the concept of the Total Time on Test, TTT-plot on age and condition dependent replacement is discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    The cycle between two replacements based on condition monitoring is discussed. Models representing a condition dependent failure rate function reflecting the information in a monitoring parameter are suggested. For the selection of a cost-effective technique, a modified version of the Proportional Hazards Model, PHM, is proposed. Utilizing this modified model, it is possible to reveal the effect of monitoring parameters and operating conditions on the failure rate function. General comments on the application of the cost equation are given.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis was to analyse the reported work-related accidents in shipping by using frequency combined with consequence. Thereafter the purpose was to reach conclusions regarding which work-related accident was the most serious. The thesis also aimed to find if there were any connections between these accidents. Statistics were ordered from the Swedish Work Environment Authority. These statistics were processed in several ways, for instance demarcations regarding position onboard was made. Since the conditions of reporting workrelated accidents had changed during time, relevant years was chosen after consideration. The result of the study shows that when a person experiences an accident where he or she stumbles, trips, slips or treads heavily, the person is more likely to have a long sick-leave. These types of accidents are also the most common ones. To lose control of equipment or to lose control of equipment used to move material is also a common accident leading to a long sickleave. The only connection found is that the external factor hawser is present at several accidents with different consequences and cause.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the study is to identify work hazards by analyzing the work activities and work environment during a separator overhaul onboard a ship. To identify risks the study used the Swedish Work Environment Authority´s regulation AFS 2012:02, the assessment form KIM 1 and a biomechanical program ALBA. The results show that there are risks for stress load on the body and that there is room for improvements. An example of an improvement is to design an additional workbench to allow proper work postures and decrease the number of lifts. The results also show the importance of using the right technique while lifting to reduce the chance of stress load. The study can be used for further studies on the work environment hazards onboard ships.

    Modern ships have the ability to navigate with the use of ECDIS only. ECDIS is dependent on many subsystems to function optimally. Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is a tool with which you can examine a specific system to detect potential construction errors and deficiencies in the production design. This thesis has used a FMEA to investigate ECDIS simulators at Sjöfartshögskolan in Kalmar to examine how ECDIS was affected when one or more of the subsystems connected to ECDIS have failed. The purpose of this study was to detect design errors, deficiencies and limitations of the ECDIS simulators at Sjöfartshögskolan in Kalmar. It could be demonstrated that some of the alarms in ECDIS that should alert the navigator that a subsystem has failed not has worked according to the manufacturer´s instructions. Additionally has some features of ECDIS not operated according to the manufacturer's instructions and some simulator functions which should test a specific situation in a safe environment have not worked.

    Abstract [sv]

    Syftet var att beskriva trädslagsförändringen i Krånge skog under perioden 1864 – 2010/2011. Vidare att reda ut var utvecklingen leder, - hur resonerar dagens skogsägare vid trädslagsval och vad styr dem? För att besvara frågorna jämfördes en Laga skifteskarta från år 1864 med ett ortofoto från 2010/2011. Vidare skickades en enkät ut till 18 skogsägare i Krånge.

    Resultatet visade att många avdelningar bevuxna med gran i mitten av 1800-  talet har ersatts med tall. Skogsägarna valde trädslag främst utifrån ståndortens egenskaper och tidigare trädslag på platsen. Valet påverkades inte av eventuella skaderisker eller andra orsaker.

    På marknaden idag sätts det allt större krav på att företag ska kunna leverera unika produkter med hög kvalité för vara så attraktiva på marknaden som möjligt. Det har därför blivit allt mer vanligt inom industrier att man delar av sin standard produktion till projektbaserad produktion för att lösa specifika uppgifter. De företag som har många projekt samtidigt är oftast utformad som en multi-projektorganisation. Det karakteristiska draget för en multi-projektorganisation är att fler projekt bedrivs parallellt av samma personal. Fördelen med detta arbetssätt är att företag kan använda de mänskliga resurserna på ett effektivt sätt, då kunskap kan överföras mellan de olika projekten. Projektledarnas roll i företaget blir då allt viktigare samt en effektiv projektstyrning och projektkoordination. I en multi-projektorganisation så kan störningar i ett projekt påverka de övriga projekten. Det är därför viktigt med en jämn fördelning av arbetet och beläggning för projektledarna, inte bara för projektets resultat utan även för arbetsmiljön så att inte det skapas onödig stress eller ovisshet. Projektkoordinatorns roll i organisationen blir då att koordinera projektledarna så deras arbetsmiljö blir hållbar. Att arbeta i en multi-projektmiljö förväntas att öka i framtiden men det finns lite studier inom detta område. Speciellt hur man undviker problemen och vilka förutsättningar som är viktiga för att bedriva en hälsosam och effektiv projektkoordinering.

    Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vilka förutsättningar som är viktiga vid projektkoordinering och föreslå hjälpmedel för projektkoordinatorns dagliga arbete. Detta sker genom att undersöka projektkoordinering i ett fallföretag och få en förståelse för deras arbetssätt och metoder. Resultatet används för att utveckla och säkerställa en bra och hållbar arbetsmiljö för de anställda samt höja effektiviteten för projektorganisationen.

    Datainsamling har skett genom en kvalitativ fallstudie på Holtab AB. Den har gjorts genom intervjuer och observationer samt studier av dokument. Samtidigt gjordes en kvantitativ datainsamling för att ta reda på vilka problem som generellt förekommer på företag där projektledarna arbetar med flera projekt samtidigt. Detta gjordes genom enkäter via mail.

    Det har blivit tydligt under studien att företag som arbetar i bygg- eller tillverkningsindustrin har speciellt svårt att planera framtiden då projekten måste startas direkt och leveranstiderna är korta. Ett problem som Holtab´s organisation har i dagsläget är att de inte har en korrekt överblick på projektledarnas beläggning. Holtab är just nu i en fas där deras projektorganisation växter och det har anställts fler projektledare under de senaste åren, vilket har gjort att projektchefens roll som projektkoordinator har blivit allt mer nödvändig. Tillsammans med Holtabs projektchef och projektledarna så skapades en kravspecifikation för ett verktyg. Verktyget fick namnet PCAO (Projekt Coordination And Overview) och hade som mål att hjälpa projektorganisationens dagliga arbete och vara ett stöd till projektkoordineringen. PCAO ger projektkoordinatorn möjlighet att få en överblick över hur projektledarnas tid är fördelade i nuläget och i framtiden. Detta ger en möjlighet att kunna se framtida kritiska moment då projektorganisationen är överbelastade under en period. Genom en bra överblick av projektorganisationen så kan fördelningen av projekt hanteras smidigare, vilket gör att det blir lättare att se till att det blir en jämnare arbetsfördelning. Detta resulterar att projektkoordinatorn kan ge projektledarna en bättre arbetsmiljö och bättre förutsättningar för att kunna göra ett så bra och effektivt arbete som möjligt.

    In this study 14 e-commerce platforms are compared based on their functionality. The functionality has been identified to increase sales and facilitate scalability. To rate the impact of the functions, e-tailors in the niche of clothing and accessories were asked to respond a questionnaire. To identify relevant functionality for both of the approaches, the researchers used literature. The functionality were used as a framework when comparing the 14 e-commerce platforms. This study indicates that all functions are not equal. Responsive design and multiple payment solutions are considered most critical and are directly linked to increased sales figures. For the e-retailers to achieve scalability, this study finds that purchasable add-ons and themes plays a big role. The e-commerce platforms were rated thanks to data collection and data analysis. Abantecart and Opencart both received high ratings regarding functionality and the ability to increase sales numbers and enable future expansions.

    Abstract [en]

    This study was performed in order to analyze and evaluate the effects of dosing sulfur to the combustion process in a bio fueled boiler. Equipment for this purpose was installed to the bio boiler at a district heating plant in Arvika in order to overcome high levels of carbon monoxide in the flue gas. The analysis has been carried out with regard to how well the sulfur dosage is fulfilling its intended purpose but also to possible side effects. Corrosion risks, levels of unburned sulfur in flue gas, flue gas condensate, air and bottom ash along with what happens chemically in the combustion process have been studied. Operational reports from the bio fueled boiler was studied and analyzed. To find out other effects of adding sulfur to the combustion a literature study was performed as well as direct contact with experts on the subject. CO content in the flue gas drops when adding sulfur to the combustion process. Laboratory analysis and operational reports indicate a presence of sulfur in the flue gas, flue gas condensate and fly ash and bottom ash. The results show that the levels are acceptable. The risk of causing corrosion in the plant by adding sulfur to the combustion is considered low. The current knowledge of what is happening chemically in the combustion process by the addition of sulfur is insufficient. Full-scale and laboratory experiments have been carried out without being able to show exactly how the sulfur lowers CO concentrations in flue gases.

    Detta arbete inriktar sig att modernisera Böta Kvarn Kraftstation. Stationen är gammal och dess utrustning är i behov av en uppgradering. För detta ändamål togs de fram offertunderlag innehållande en teknisk beskrivning med tillhörande information angående kraftstationen. Denna skickades till flertalet leverantörer varvid Cargo & Kraft och Vattenkraftsbolaget svarade. Valet föll på Cargo & Kraft. Deras lösning är en semikaplan med tillhörande utrustning som teoretiskt kan generera ca 1.57 GWh per år. Detta ger en ökad produktion av 1,22 GWh och en ökad inkomst för kraftstation av ca 941 500 kr per år. Stationens tillgänglighet kommer via uppgraderingen att öka och anläggningen blir helautomatisk med bland annat sms-larm vid driftproblem.

    Abstract [en]

    At Kalmar Maritime Academy (KMA) the first-year students at the Master Mariner program complete a course in the use of ARPA. The course includes eight simulator exercises, where seven of them are completed in pairs and the last exercise is an individual assessment. Previously, instructors have encouraged students to choose a new partner for each of the first seven exercises; however, the reason for this strategy has not been well documented.

     

    The aim of this study was to examine the effect of fixed versus rotating bridge teams on the individual learning outcome. During an eight-week course in spring 2012, two groups of students were asked to work either with the same or a new partner for each exercise during a course. The result showed no difference between the two groups with regard to the individual assessment, and the students who failed did so because of inadequate interpretation of the ARPA information, and not because of insufficient radar knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

    The manufacturing industry are dependent of engineering expertise. Currently the ability to supply the industry with engineering graduates and staff that have an up-to- date and relevant competences might be considered as a challenge for the society. In this paper an education approach is presented where academia - industry - research institutes cooperate around the development and implementation of master level courses. The methods applied to reach the educational goals, concerning expert competence within remote diagnostics, have been on site and remote lectures given by engineering, medical and metrology experts. The pedagogical approach utilized has been flipped classroom. The main results show that academic courses developed in cooperation with industry requires flexibility, time and effort from the involved partners. The evaluation interviews indicate that student are satisfied with the courses and pedagogical approach but suggests more reconciliation meetings for course development. Labs early in the course was considered good, and division of labs at the system and the component level. However further long- term studies of evaluation of impact is necessary.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis is part of a major project that the Port of Gothenburg has embarked upon, and is produced as a result of a project directive. The purpose of that project is to renew its current fire protection in Energihamnen (the Energy Port) but also meet future requirements. The purpose of the present study is to examine what expectations shipping companies and ship´s officers, which regularly arrive to the Energy Port, have on the Port of Gothenburg’s fire prevention systems and fire emergency plans. Further investigated are the requirements that form the basis for the fire protection equipment onboard tankers that regularly arrive in the Energy Port. To obtain answers from the above mentioned purpose, interviews were conducted with three ship owners and five ship officers, and this was combined with a literature summary which consists of the regulatory framework that places specific requirements and recommendations for the fire prevention equipment that will be on board tankers. The interviews were conducted to include the shipping industry's expectations of the Port of Gothenburg’s emergency procedures during cargo operations. The result shows that the majority of respondents expected that the Port of Gothenburg should have firefighting equipment on their docks that can extinguish fires onboard the ship’s deck. They also expected that the port's emergency response plans should be well rehearsed and should also quickly come into force during an emergency.

    To stay competitive on today’s market and satisfy the constantly increasing customer requirements, working with continuous and cost-effective improvement is a requirement. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a model to continuously and cost-effectively improve the quality of a management system within trading business, taking the environmental aspect and impact of organizational changes up on personnel in consideration. The model has been developed based on theoretical management strategies and improvement methodologies: Process management, Change management, TQM, Lean, Continuous and cost-effective improvement, PDCA and Kaizen. The developed model should result in a high-qualitative management system that continuously should be improved and maintained, to streamline the supply chain and in turn be profitable. In order to enhance the sustainability of the model, it has been tested at a case company. From the results, conclusions can be drawn that concrete outcomes of the model implementation takes time, but it serve its purpose and generates in great results.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to understand key challenges in turning

    strategy to performance, and with that as a fundament suggest a model

    for the strategy implementation process. The work is based on a

    theoretical framework that brings together and merges different areas of

    science to create new synergies and leveraged results. In this case, the

    area of Strategic Implementation receives added value from mainly

    Innovation- and Knowledge Management, as aspects of the intersection

    between Industrial Dynamic and Organizational Behavior. Moreover, due

    to the strategic focus, additional theory regarding Technology Marketing

    is also included. Departing from the theoretical framework, an empirical

    study was conducted by qualitative interviews of two managerial levels at

    an international conglomerate.

    The outcome of both theoretical and empirical findings is discussed and

    analyzed, and results in two main recommendations, addressing the

    question of how the challenges could be solved with innovation and

    knowledge management as a fundament for implementation. One of the

    main recommendations is cyclic implementation routines, advancing in a

    loop consistent of; Strategic selection; Enabling of effective knowledge

    acquisition; Implementation; and Learning. The other main

    recommendation is an Innovative and learning organization, involving

    Shared vision, leadership and the will to innovate; Appropriate structure;

    Effective Team Working; Continuing and stretching individual

    development; Extensive communication; High involvement in

    innovation; External focus; and a Creative climate.

    Coherent with these recommendations, a model is presented where the

    cultural components could be regarded as the fundament of the

    organization, which is complemented with the learning cycle and regard

    to the organization’s holistic level of maturity. This model strives to

    inspire to “manage the flow of organizational culture to make the wheels

    of implementation routines spin”.

    Abstract [en]

    This essay studies the causes of girting, i.e. accidents where tugboats get pulled down and capsizes by the vessel it is towing. The study uses 14 official accident reports about girting accidents all over the world. The HFACS-MA model is used to categorize the causes of the accident into a causal chain, in order to find out which categories are most frequently present in the accident reports.  The result shows that poorly planned tow operations (with inadequate planning and/or risk assessment), deficiencies in the organization’s documentation (i.e. manuals, instructions and procedures), and poor communication between the involved parties were the most frequently found factors for girting. In order to reduce the risk of girting, recommendations have been made that includes the importance of keeping documents up to date, maintain clear communication between the parties involved during towing operations and to plan each operation thoroughly, giving everyone involved the opportunity for feedback regarding the plan.

    Accidents occur when exercising with free-fall lifeboats. This should be possible to avoid with better equipment and better education. Since accidents occur more often when exercise is performed aboard ships than ashore, the later part should be more decisive: During exercise the focus should be put on how to buckle up in a correct way. The above text is a part of what this investigative study is about, we have used a qualitative method for sorting out questions about the risks with free-fall lifeboats. SOLAS does not put any demands on the existence of aiding equipment to facilitate bringing injured persons in a free-fall lifeboat. The tests that have been performed with people onboard free-fall lifeboats have only taken place during favourable conditions. Considering that ships are exposed to the motion of the sea and that the boat could land on a wave the SOLAS demands should be increased. The lifeboat systems we have, is neither tested nor practised with in waves. That free-fall lifeboats is a good concept as a lifesaving equipment, there is no doubt about, but it should be developed further.

    Syftet med vårt arbete var att ta reda på vad studenterna i avgångsklasserna vid Sjöfartshögskolan i Kalmar har för åsikt gällande användandet av skolfartyget Calmare Nyckel. Vidare hade vi för avsikt att undersöka vilken åsikt Sjöfartshögskolan i Kalmar har rörande användandet samt att ta reda på ifall det finns en skillnad mellan respektive åsikter.

    Genom en analys och sammanställning av vår enkätundersökning kom vi fram till att 98 % av studenterna ansåg att de antal gånger de fått använda Calmare Nyckel, för navigation och manövrering, varit för lite. Ur våra intervjuer med anställda på skolan framkom det att de däremot är nöjda med hur de låter Calmare Nyckel komma till användning i utbildningen av sjökaptener.

    Vi kunde se en tydlig skillnad i åsikter mellan skola och studenter. Skillnaden bottnade bland annat i skolans bristfälliga information om deras syfte och målsättning med Calmare Nyckel. En annan anledning till skillnaden beror på hur skolan marknadsför deras skolfartyg samt hur studenterna tolkar denna. Majoriteten av de tillfrågade studenterna i vår enkätundersökning hade en förväntan om att de skulle få använda Calmare Nyckel mer än vad de gjort under utbildningen.

    Abstract [en]

    Work, especially that in complex, dynamic workplaces, often requires subtle, local judgment with regard to timing of subtasks, relevance, importance, prioritization and so forth. Still, people in Nuclear Industry seem to think safety results from people just following procedures. In the wake of failure it can be tempting to introduce new procedures and an even stricter "rule following culture". None, or at least very little, attention is given to tacit knowledge and individual skills. I am aiming to highlight the inadequacy of putting too much trust in formalization and that reporting and trending of events will contribute to increased learning, an increased nuclear safety and an efficient operational experience. The ability to interpret a situation concrete depends on proven experience in similar situations, analogical thinking and tacit knowledge. In this essay I intend to problematize the introduction and use of so-called Corrective Action Program (CAP) and computerized reporting systems linked to CAP in the Nuclear Industry.

    What I found out is that the whole industry, from regulators to licensees, seems to be stuck in the idea that the scientific perspective on knowledge is the only "true" perspective. This leads to an exaggerated belief in that technology and formalized work processes and routines will create a safer business. The computerized reporting system will not, as the idea was from the beginning, contribute to increased nuclear safety since the reports is based on the trigger and not the underlying causes and in-depth analysis. Managing safety by numbers (incidents, error counts, safety threats, and safety culture indicators) is very practical but has its limitations. Error counts only uphold an illusion of rationality and control, but may offer neither real insight nor productive routes for progress on safety.

    The question is why the CAP, error counts and computerized reporting systems have had such a big impact in the nuclear industry? It rests after all, on too weak foundations. The answer is that the scientific perspective on knowledge is the dominating perspective. What people do not understand is that an excessive use of computerized systems and an increased formalization actually will create new risks when people lose their skills and ability to reflect and put more trust in the system than in themselves.

    We live in a world of climate change where finding a solution to reducing the emission of GHG is a continuous pursuit. To reduce the emission from global shipping IMO has adopted the SEEMP consequently making the shipping industry more energy efficient. With this in mind the purpose of this study has been to review the implementation and usage of the SEEMP among Swedish shipping companies trading oil. Furthermore, the views of the involved parties with regard to the SEEMP were also investigated. In order to deeply analyze the companies´ approach to the SEEMP a qualitative research method has been used. The study consists of four semi-structured interviews with sex persons from two shipping companies including both onshore and ship-based personnel. The result shows that the implementation has been carried out in consultation with their own classification societies and with the IMO guidelines in mind. They have also tried to take the opportunity to make their organization more energy efficient. Both companies welcomed the adoption of the SEEMP and were of the opinion that it shouldhave been introduced at an earlier stage. However, some barriers to the SEEMP have been found, for example the operational structure of the shipping industry.

    På grund av ständig förändring av affärsbehov, utmaningar och för att hänga med i marknaden tvingas företagen att förbättra sina processer för att hålla jämna takt med marknadens krav. Många verksamheter certifierade idag enligt ISO-standarden för att säkra kvaliteten och en del för att kunderna kräver det. Denna studie har som syfte att utveckla en teoretisk modell som ska hjälpa företaget systematiskt uppdatera processkartor som är certifierade enligt ISO-standard. En modell grundar på flödesschema och PDCA-cykeln. Resultatet som presenterar i denna studie visar att det finns förbättringsmöjligheter i tillverkningsprocessen.

    Abstract [en]

    The continuous-review (r,Q) inventory model with lost sales and stochastic lead-time is considered. It is assumed that Qr, so that at most a single order may be outstanding at any time. This model is much treated in the literature, beginning with Hadley and Whitin (1963) and there are many heuristics, but no simple exact algorithm. We derive the model for both continuous and discrete (Poisson) demand and stochastic lead-time, and devise a simple iterative algorithm that is certain to locate the global minimum if the lead-time demand distribution function is log-concave. It iterates between a square-root formula for Q and a simple equation for r. The algorithm is applicable to discrete demand when amended by a final comparison between two adjacent policies. We finally show that the model is applicable without the constraint Qr, but then lead-time demand is a function of r and Q, the investigation of which is left to future research.

    Purpose

    This work aims to investigate the effects of neglecting, modelling or partly resolving turbulent fluctuations of velocity, temperature and concentrations on the predicted turbulence-chemistry interaction in urea-selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) systems.

    Design/methodology/approach

    Numerical predictions of the NO conversion efficiency in an industrial urea-SNCR system are compared to experimental data. Reactor models of varying complexity are assessed, ranging from one-dimensional ideal reactor models to state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics simulations based on the detached-eddy simulation (DES) approach. The models use the same reaction mechanism but differ in the degree to which they resolve the turbulent fluctuations of the gas phase. A methodology for handling of unknown experimental data with regard to providing adequate boundary conditions is also proposed.

    Findings

    One-dimensional reactor models may be useful for a first quick assessment of urea-SNCR system performance. It is critical to account for heat losses, if present, due to the significant sensitivity of the overall process to temperature. The most comprehensive DES setup evaluated is associated with approximately two orders of magnitude higher computational cost than the conventional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes-based simulations. For studies that require a large number of simulations (e.g. optimizations or handling of incomplete experimental data), the less costly approaches may be favored with a tolerable loss of accuracy.

    Originality/value

    Novel numerical and experimental results are presented to elucidate the role of turbulent fluctuations on the performance of a complex, turbulent, reacting multiphase flow.

    Abstract [en]

    Collision is one of the risks that exist for vessels traveling the seas despite the fact that there are international regulations, such as the Collision Regulations, put in place to prevent such occurrences. Through a literature study we have used the collision reports from two maritime investigation bureaus to identify which deviations from the Collision Regulations that contribute to collisions and how the deviations differ between different vessels, time of day, state of visibility and staffing on the bridge. When identifying which deviations from regulations that contributed to the collision we have used the investigation bureaus own conclusions as base. We picked two different bureaus so that we would be able to compare the results and see if there is a difference. In a majority of the collisions the colliding vessels had deviated from one or more of the Collision Regulations. The regulations that most vessels deviated from in situations that led to collisions were the regulations concerning lookout and assessment of the risk of collision. Our study show that onboard vessels the watch keeping officer should always have a lookout on the bridge and use this resource correctly. Concerning the assessment of risk of collision it is important that the watch keeping officer use his radar equipment correctly and know its limitations.

    This exam paper is about how shipping companies analyse various types of bilge water separators systems and on which grounds they choose a certain type of equipment. To answer our questions we chose to perform a survey regarding how Swedish shipping companies reason before they purchase bilge water separating equipment to their ships. Some of the questions we wanted to find answers to were questions about the equipments usability, reliability and economy of the equipment, in addition to that we also wanted to investigate how the companies regarded each particular when they were selecting bilge water equipment. Furthermore there were obviously also a lot of other interesting issues, which we have tried to shed some light on while conducting our survey. For reasons that mainly concerned the simple fact of being able to contact the various shipping companies, we chose only to include Swedish shipping companies in the survey. We chose to perform the interviews over the phone and to record them. We have used a variant of the qualitative method when conducting the interviews. Thereby letting the interviewees speak more freely about their own experiences and thoughts. We were interested to find out how the shipping companies reasoned, because according to rules and regulation they are obliged to have working and certified bilge water separators on board the ship. We found our approach effective and therefore it further enhanced and enlarged the scope of our exam paper. The main conclusions in this report could be summarized by stating that there were substantial differences between the principles how different shipping companies argued before acquiring bilge water separators. An additional conclusion would be that some shipping companies could actually improve some of their purchase strategies, and utilize a more carefully analyzed and cost related plan prior the purchase of equipment.

    Falling from heights on ships occurs even though safety equipment is used. The

    intent of this study was to find out what factors affect the safety on heights onboard

    ships. The study was conducted by interviews with ship’s officers, able seamen, a

    professional union and inspectors. The conclusion showed that there are some

    factors affecting the accidents where someone falls from a height onboard. The

    factors were usage, attitudes to the safety equipment, suitability, regulations and

    education. The findings indicated that safety equipment might not always have been

    used as reported, and that if it was used it might not have been used correctly. It

    appeared that it is important for the officers onboard to lead by example and to set

    an evident standard onboard to create an environment where safety equipment is

    used and used in a correct way.

    This study was conducted with the purpose of furthering the knowledge of collisionsinvolving Swedish icebreakers in the Baltic Sea. It strived to identify the causes and directeffects of this type of collision. It also sought to establish if regulations and operationalguidelines, governing Swedish icebreakers and icebreaker assistance, were sufficient and ifthey were being adhered to.The method used to accomplish this was a qualitative literature study of all data regardingSwedish icebreaker collisions from the archives of the Swedish Maritime Administration andthe Swedish Transport Agency. Several accident investigation authorities from around theworld assisted in developing a method for processing the raw data.Having processed and examined the data the prevalence of different causes contributing to thecollisions could be established. All collisions occurred during icebreaker assistance. It wasfound that the all encompassing cause of the collisions was the difficulties of evaluating theice conditions and the behavior that difficult ice conditions necessitated the vessels to adopt.It was further made clear that the direct effects for the vessels, their crew and the environmentwere of limited severity. It was also concluded that the regulations and operational guidelinesgoverning Swedish icebreaker assistance, were generally being adhered to, and weresatisfactory in enabling a sufficiently safe and effective icebreaker assistance service.

    Abstract [en]

    The main focus of this study was to examine the current state of LNG, and its applications as an alternative fuel for industry, shipping and power production. Gathering of data, and the subsequent scrutiny of the collected material, was performed in accordance with the methodology of a literary study. The result offered an overall view of what has happened up until now. It also suggested what possible developments might follow in the near future. The purpose of the study was to describe how far the development has progressed, with regards to LNG and its infrastructure.

    The conclusions that could be drawn from the study were that things are moving forward. Some sectors have however reached further than others. Economic and environmental reasons appear as main driving factors for those who are considering LNG as a part of their plan of operations. Lack of infrastructure is said to be a key reason why LNG still hasn´t gained momentum. Numerous LNG-terminals have been built in North America and around northwestern Europé, including one in Sweden. More facilities are being built in the years to come as well, steadily improving the availability of LNG.

    Denna rapport handlar om hur man kan göra för att öka konverteringar på ehandelssidor. Metoden som använts för att få fram resultat är A/B-testning. Syftet med rapporten är att undersöka om man med hjälp av A/B-testning kan få fler besökare att slutföra sina köp när de kommit till kassan på e-handelssidan Babyshop. I rapporten finns att läsa om hur testen har utförts, samt se resultaten av de utförda testen.

    På grund av begränsad tid blev testresultaten väldigt lika. Det är möjligt att resultaten hade skiljt sig åt mer om testerna hade kunnat utföras under en längre tid.

    The purpose of this study was to understand and describe master mariner students’ experiences of supervision during the performance of tasks necessary to achieve the intended learning outcomes for the first module of on board practical training. Semi structured personal interviews were made with eight freshman students between 25th of March and 5th of April 2013. These interviews were recorded and transcribed before being interpreted and structured into different categories. Strategic selection was used to select interviewees and these were interviewed using ”critical incident technique”. The result of this study shows that a supervision method that includes distinct instructions or demonstrations followed by correction and assessment is experienced in a positive way during the performance of certain tasks. In other cases, increased own influence has been experienced positively. The characteristics and requirements of a task affect the experience of the supervision method to a high degree. The study also shows that a lack of sufficient supervision can make it more difficult for the student to perform the tasks in the on board training manual and achieve the intended learning outcomes for on board practical training.

    Abstract

    Within the Swedish Master Mariner programme 360 days of onboard training are included. A supervisor is designated on board during the internship, with the task of helping to develop and support the student. The aim of this study is to illuminate: the supervisor’s experiences of the student’s ability to handle their time on board, their thoughts about their own role, and the arrangement of the onboard training. This is a qualitative study in which seven supervisors, active in four different shipping companies were interviewed. The selection of this type of study was based on the fact that interviews would capture the respondents’ perceptions and experiences, and at the same time allow for them to develop their reasoning. The selection of respondents in this study was limited to Swedish supervisors for Master Mariner students employed in Swedish-owned product tankers. The study reveals that the supervisors are positive about their role and the opportunities that the training generates for the students, and also about their own influence on their future colleagues. The study also reveals that students may gain more from the internship by utilising their rest days. Each student has a total of 52 rest days during the internship.

    Detta är en undersökande uppsats om hur landströmsanslutningen har fungerat på Stena Vision under 2012-2013, angående kostnad och miljöpåverkan för att producera ström i land, istället för att producera ström ombord med fartygets generatorer.

    Genom att räkna fram avgasvärdena skapades en bild av hur stor miljöpåverkan generatordrift har. Naturvårdsverkets beräkningsmodell användes för att få en så exakt beräkning som möjligt och för att jämföra avgasutsläppet mot den globala miljöpåverkan.

    Stena Vision minskade sina utsläpp av växthusgaser med 290 ton per år genom att använda landströmsanslutningen. Det kunde även påvisas en minskning av CO2, SO2, NOx och PM10.

    Kostnaden för landströmmen varierar väldigt mycket från månad till månad. Detta är direkt orsakat av att nätavgiften är en stor del av kostnaden och vissa månader har inte landströmsanslutningen använts i den utsträckningen som man skulle ha kunnat. Att använda fartygets generatorer har kostat 1,47 SEK/kWh och att använda landströmsanslutningen har kostat 2,06 SEK/kWh.

    Genom att även ansluta Stena Spirit på den befintliga landströmsanläggningen gick kostnaden per kWh ner till 1,53 SEK/kWh för landström.

    Transferring and receiving computer files are something most of us do on a regularbasis whether it is for private purposes or if it is work related. FTP is a protocolused for this very purpose which was launched during a time when personal computerswere growing increasingly popular in both home and workplace environments.Since then, more protocols have been introduced and today there are a number ofoptions available bringing new and common features alike to the market. The SMTPprotocol, extended with the MIME standard, is currently a widely used alternative tothe pure file transfer protocols due to the user familiarity and past experiences withthese mail services. Sending and receiving files through e-mail does however implysome limitations together with the fact that some security aspects need to be takeninto consideration, particularly for company users handling sensitive data. In thisthesis, three different file transfer protocols (SMTP, SFTP and HTTP) have all beenevaluated in account of their user friendliness as well as their security features. Theresults indicate that HTTP(S) combined with the WebDAV extension can be considereda viable alternative for organizations due to its user friendliness and security.The remaining protocols, SMTP and SFTP, also have their uses where SFTP wouldseem to be an appealing option for advanced users and where SMTP remains a passablealternative for private usage by regular users under the right conditions.

    Even though the ice has formed on the Gulf of Bothnia the trade with the northern ports of Sweden and Finland does not cease. Many of the ships calling these ports have their primary survival craft in form the of a freefall lifeboat, a survival craft that experts have condemned as useless in ice. Even the ship's secondary survival system consisting of inflatable rafts has been criticized. The purpose of this study was to examine what kind of plan Swedish shipping companies, who operate vessels that carry this type of lifeboat, have to deal with a possible emergency situation in the ice.

    The study was based on qualitative interviews with representatives from three Swedish shipping companies operating in winter conditions. The study revealed great differences between the various companies in routine procedures when operating in ice. None of the interviewed companies had a special plan for the abandonment of ships in ice conditions, although they have a safety organization approved by the Swedish Transport Agency.
