    Abstract [en]

    This study is made to understand the opportunities and challenges SMEs have to adopt GHG calculation tools. Adoption of GHG calculation tools are common by large organizations and have proven as a consequence to lower their GHG emissions, motivate their employees and establish sustainability goals. Even thou a large amount of large organizations have adopted GHG calculation tools, this is very rare in SMEs. Using the theoretical framework called Rogers diffusion of innovation theory and a survey, the factors behind why or why not SMEs have adopted GHG calculation tools were studied. The results showed that only 9% of SMEs have adopted GHG calculation tools and the reason for this is lack of resources, competence and data. The analysis showed that the characteristics of an organization that affects this the most are leadership, education and regulations. In order to overcome the challenges, organizations should prioritize to have a leadership that motivates employees to engage in sustainability actions. Organizations should enable skill development in the field of sustainability to increase the competence. This would enable more organization to adopt GHG calculation tools and most likely lower their GHG emissions.

    Abstract [en]

    The Master thesis explores the knowledge sharing that takes place during the requirement engineering phase of globally distributed information systems development. In recent years, due to globalization, information systems development activities have become increasingly distributed across different geographical locations. Requirement engineering is an important and knowledge intensive phase in the development of information systems. Requirement engineering is the process of identifying, analyzing, documenting, validating and managing the requirements of a system. Effective and efficient knowledge sharing during the requirement engineering is vital for the successful development of information systems. However, the global distribution of the stakeholders has affected knowledge sharing during requirement engineering in various ways making it more challenging.

     

    Drawing on the theories of knowledge sharing within the field of information systems, this interpretive research study aims at exploring stakeholders’ perceptions about the challenges met during the knowledge sharing in requirement engineering phase of globally distributed information systems development projects. More specifically, this Master thesis explores the perceived challenges and generates a list of suggestions to overcome the challenges by conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews among the key stakeholders, both customers and business analysts.

     

    The findings indicate that the knowledge sharing is influenced by challenges such as cultural differences, language barriers, communication issues, coordination issues arising from multiple stakeholders, time difference and difficulty in sharing tacit knowledge in the globally distributed settings. Participants’ suggestions for overcoming these challenges include cultural trainings, kick off meetings, language trainings, use of translator, face-to-face communication and interaction, video conferencing, scheduling important meetings in the common suitable timings, identification of the main stakeholders, having a mediator and making close observations with face-to-face interactions.

    Abstract [en]

    A shift in water monitoring approach from traditional grab sampling to novel wireless sensors is gaining in popularity not only among researchers but also in the market. These latest technologies readily enable numerous advantageous monitoring arrangements like remote, continuous, real-time, and spatially-dense and broad in coverage measurements, and identification of long-term trends of parameters of interest. Thus, a WSN system is implemented in a river in Kosovo as part of the InWaterSense project to monitor its water quality parameters. It is one of the first state of the art technology demonstration systems of its kind in the domain of water monitoring in developing countries like Kosovo. Water quality datasets are transmitted at pre-programmed intervals from sensing stations deployed in the river to the server at university via the GPRS network. Data is then made available through a portal to different target groups (policy-makers, water experts, and citizens). Moreover, the InWaterSense system behaves intelligently like staying in line with water quality regulatory standards.

    Abstract [en]

    Maritime insurance is a collective name for a multiple insurances a shipping company must have in order to conduct maritime operations. The two most common ones that affect the ship itself and its operation are Kasko and P&I. Using the RMS TITANIC case, the study intends to determine whether the policyholder of the vessel is entitled to insurance compensation or not according to modern Swedish maritime insurance. The study looks more closely at how insurance companies apply the terms for identification and what differentiates negligence from gross negligence, in order to determine whether compensation should be paid to the owner of RMS TITANIC. The study uses a qualitative method with semi-structured interviews and literature study. The result shows that Swedish insurance companies apply identification to a small extent, which allows insurance coverage for shipowners not to be affected if a crew acts carelessly on board, but the same does not apply if the act was grossly negligent. This means that the policyholder of RMS TITANIC is entitled to compensation according to modern maritime insurance.

    Abstract [en]

    Human error has been a key factor in grounding- and collision incidents in the past and continues to present a challenge to the maritime industry in the present day. The feasibility of a pilot framework for Bridge Resource Management (BRM) training lies at the heart of this study, its objective being to gauge the possibility of the construction of such a model. The result is thought to open up for further research and highlight the most relevant and effective BRM tools that can be used, by the bridge team, to prevent collision and grounding. The study was carried out in two stages. Firstly, four key personnel within the shipping industry were interviewed. These respondents were tasked with prioritising what they regarded as the most effective BRM tools. Secondly, the effectiveness of these tools was tested on marine incident cases. A document analysis was carried out on six collision and grounding cases, as investigated by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB). The majority of the respondents were in agreement regarding which three BRM tools they regarded as the most relevant and effective. The result from the interviews was repeated in the result from the document analysis.  The conclusions that were drawn are that: it is possible to construct a pilot framework for BRM training and it is also possible to measure the effectiveness of the BRM tools. Additionally, suggestions for further research that arose from this thesis pertain to the study of the relationship between different BRM tools.

    För att få en djupare förståelse för hur yta kan frigöras och användas har en studie genomförts på Villa VIDA som idag inte har tillräckligt med fri yta för kapacitetsökning. När nuläget analyserades kunde det konstateras att lagerbildningar på produktionsyta och ett måleri var det som hindrade företaget från att expandera. Baserat på det nuvarande läget genererades två alternativa layouter. I det ena förslaget valdes outsourcing av måleriet för att frigöra ännu mer yta och få plats med en kapacitetsökning på 50 % istället för 25 % som hade blivit resultatet om måleriet bevarats. Åtgärder som frigjorde yta innebar reducering av antal lagringspunkter och minskade orderkvantiteter. Vid utvärdering blev resultatet att företaget bör satsa på förslaget där måleriet är outsourcat då detta bidrar med ekonomiska så väl som flödesrelaterade fördelar samtidigt som ytan används på ett effektivare sätt.

    Abstract [en]

    In Sweden seven courts has been appointed to specialize in admiralty law cases. These cases are either civil or criminal cases with connection to shipping on Swedish territory.

    The objective was to examine and describe the admiralty law verdicts over time with focus on what types of cases, differences between courts and variation over time. The study focused on merchant shipping.

    Study of literature was chosen as method and with follow-up questions interviews were made with agencies and experts. The literature in this study was the 153 verdicts that were announced between 2009 and 2013.

    Of all verdicts collected were five civil cases and 148 criminal cases with 13 classifications. The largest difference between the courts was the sum of verdicts. A change over time could not be observed.

    Other conclusions that were made were that ships’ masters, that have the utmost responsibility, avoided prosecution when they were not present for the event of the prosecution.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper a sequential method for the selection of maintenance technique for mechanical systems is presented. It is based on technical knowledge concerning component failure mechanisms and failure causes. Classification of failures according to their consequences is stated. A modified version of failure modes, effects and criticality analysis is given and a way to identify significant components is discussed. Analysis of collected data is discussed and a method to identify a replacement level of a monitoring parameter is proposed. Criteria for the selection of a monitoring technique based on the intrinsic information of monitoring parameters are introduced. Finally, a decision rule for the selection of a suitable maintenance technique is suggested and a modified expression of the long run average cost per unit time is used as a distinguishing criterion between applicable strategies.

    Profitable production demands continuously improved maintenance decision accuracy to reduce unplanned stoppages, prolong components/machines  life length and maintain production continuity. When CM, e.g. vibration level or oil temperature, value exceeds a warning level, it demands a clear understanding of what happened and how it will develop to avoid failures. It demands also reliable information, e.g. probability of failure, residual  life and when is the most profitable time for maintenance. Companies strive to reduce production cost through reducing non-value adding times, e.g. failures, for offering customers lower prices and generating additional competitive advantages. In this paper, a new tool (Prediction of Vibration and oil temperature, PreVib) for predicting the condition of a turbine, generator and gearbox is introduced,  discussed and tested. The solution offers a unique opportunity to achieve just in time dynamic and cost-effective maintenance by selecting the most profitable time for maintenance. PreVib is tested in a power plant. The major results: Failures can appreciably be reduced thanks the high precision of prediction ( + 90%), i.e. a negligible difference from the real measurement: PreVib does not demand extensive or additional data, and not replace available maintenance systems. The major conclusion is that applying PreVib, it is possible to reduce failures appreciably, prolong life length of components/equipment and perform profitable maintenance

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper a graphical method for the selection of a cost-effective monitoring technique is suggested. Also, a graphical method to estimate the level at which components should be replaced when using a cost-effective technique, i.e. threshold level, is proposed. These two methods are based on the concept of the Total Time on Test, TTT-plot on age and condition dependent replacement is discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    The cycle between two replacements based on condition monitoring is discussed. Models representing a condition dependent failure rate function reflecting the information in a monitoring parameter are suggested. For the selection of a cost-effective technique, a modified version of the Proportional Hazards Model, PHM, is proposed. Utilizing this modified model, it is possible to reveal the effect of monitoring parameters and operating conditions on the failure rate function. General comments on the application of the cost equation are given.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis was to analyse the reported work-related accidents in shipping by using frequency combined with consequence. Thereafter the purpose was to reach conclusions regarding which work-related accident was the most serious. The thesis also aimed to find if there were any connections between these accidents. Statistics were ordered from the Swedish Work Environment Authority. These statistics were processed in several ways, for instance demarcations regarding position onboard was made. Since the conditions of reporting workrelated accidents had changed during time, relevant years was chosen after consideration. The result of the study shows that when a person experiences an accident where he or she stumbles, trips, slips or treads heavily, the person is more likely to have a long sick-leave. These types of accidents are also the most common ones. To lose control of equipment or to lose control of equipment used to move material is also a common accident leading to a long sickleave. The only connection found is that the external factor hawser is present at several accidents with different consequences and cause.

    During the last decades there have been several great ship disasters where rescue capability has not been sufficient to save all or even a majority of the victims of a number of larger marine disasters. This is despite the fact that great efforts have been made to improve the life-saving equipment on board. Merchant ships which encounter any other ship in distress are required by law to assist in the rescue. This study was made to illustrate what resources exist in Sweden to handle major ship emergencies at sea and to what extent the merchant fleet is able to help. The study was done as a literature study with a few additional questions to shipping companies. Both merchant ships and the Swedish Maritime Administration's specialized rescue units have proven to be far too poorly equipped or too few to handle their task in rough weather conditions, which are often associated with ship disasters. Much of the responsibility for getting crew and passengers to safety after an accident is instead transferred to helicopters which fly out to the emergency location from land. Many technical problems have been found that makes it difficult to evacuate via helicopters during multiple ship disasters, as helicopters are sensitive to severe weather. A development of equipment that can be used in rough weather conditions without having to move people one by one between different crafts needs to be developed. Relying solely on helicopters for mass evacuation has proved to be too time-consuming and vulnerable.

    Abstract [en]

    Every year, several sailors choose to leave their profession at sea. This is due to several different reasons such as being homesick, stress, a high workload and lack of communication. Seven interviews were conducted in this qualitative survey in order to investigate which methods and strategies exist at the Swedish shipping companies to keep their onboard personnel. It appears that a strict plan usually does not exist, instead the company chooses to look after the needs of individuals if they are failing in development and if they are about to leave their job. The result revealed that these issues are handled differently depending on which sector of Swedish shipping they operate in. It also revealed that the size of the shipping company plays a role as the bigger companies tend to ask their senior officers to help in developing the junior officers. Concurrently the smaller shipping companies tend to take on the responsibility themselves to develop and have good communication with their junior officers.

    Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur och vilka agila principer som kan appliceras i projekt inom tillverkningsindustrin. Studien har skett på fallföretaget KalmarGlobal och resultatet visar att det inte går att implementera agila projektmetoder rakt av, men att det däremot finns principer inom det agila som kan och bör implementeras för att få företagets projektarbete mer effektivt. Dessa är bl a enklare dokumentering, stå-upp-möten och självstyrande grupper.

    Allt fler verksamheter med mål att skapa samhällspositiva värden har på grund av ökad konkurrens behövt frångå en finansieringsmodell som bestått av bidrag och donationer till att omfamna en mer affärsliknande finansieringsmodell. Ett sätt att i större utsträckning skapa inkomstkällor som de själva kan styra över är att utveckla verksamhetens affärsmodell (Ko & Liu, 2020). 

    Samtidigt som det vuxit fram ett behov av ekonomisk utveckling inom den ideella sektorn har nya digitala teknologier förändrat hittills beprövade sätt att göra affärer (Nahrkhalaji et al., 2018; Volberda et al., 2021). Många verksamheter påbörjar en digital transformation, men flertalet upplever att slutresultatet inte medför den måluppfyllnad som är önskvärd (Volberda et al., 2021).Det finns nämligen risker med att implementera en affärsmodell med fokus på digitala teknologier utan att affärsmodellen först utvärderats i tillräcklig omfattning, till exempel att den digitala affärsmodellen utformas utan att förstå det faktiska kundvärdet den ska leverera, att utökad nytta utlovas utan att till fullo ha implementerat nödvändig organisatorisk infrastruktur eller kompetens, att den digitala möjligheten omfamnas utan att förstå hur vinst- eller kostnadsstrukturen fungerar (Linde et al., 2020).

    Med bakgrund i avsaknaden av ett ramverk för utvärdering av digitala affärsmodells-möjligheter gällande verksamheter som söker kombinera samhällspositiva värden och en mer affärsliknande finansieringsmodell har denna kollaborativa studie genomförts. Syftet har varit att undersöka i vilken omfattning Linde et al., (2020) ramverk för utvärdering av digitala affärsmodellsmöjligheter är applicerbart för verksamheter som söker kombinera samhällspositiva värden och en mer affärsliknande finansieringsmodell. Studien har även haft som syfte att undersöka vilka eventuella andra frågeställningar än de som finns i Linde et al., (2020) skulle behöva formuleras avseende ett ramverk anpassat till den här typen av verksamhet. 

    Med utgångspunkt i Ribeiro et al., (2021) Digital Social Innovation Strategy Canvas har en digital produktstrategi och en digital affärsmodellsmöjlighet formulerats. Affärs-modellsmöjligheten har sedan utvärderats utifrån Linde et al., (2020) ramverk för utvärdering av digitala affärsmodellsmöjligheter. 

    Resultatet visar på den utmaning som samhällsvärde som värdeerbjudande kan vara. Där det nödvändigtvis inte är den grupp som omfattas av samhällsbehovet som är den faktiska kunden i sammanhanget (den som betalar för att samhällsbehovet ska åtgärdas). Vid produktstrategiformulering och vid utformning av ett ramverk för utvärdering av den här typen av verksamhet blir det därför viktigt att nyansera målgruppsarbetet i syfte att särskilja mellan betalare, användare (deltagare) och de som har nytta av att samhällsbehovet tillgodoses. Annars är risken att en digital affärsmodellsmöjlighet formuleras där inkomstströmmarna blir lidande eller helt uteblir.

    Abstract

    Den här studien syftar till att undersöka och beskriva sök-och resultatmönster för svensk sjöbefälsutbildning under åren 2008 till 2018. Nationella statistiska data har analyserat med avseende på antal sökande respektive antagna till sjöbefälsutbildningar, deras kön, ålder och utbildningsmässig bakgrund. Via tidsseriestudier av register för utfärdade examina och förstagångsutfärdade sjöbefälsbehörigheter har också studenternas resultatutveckling analyserats. Vidare syftade studien till att ur det statistiska materialet försöka prognostisera framtida sök- och resultatutveckling på nämnda utbildningar.

    Resultaten visar att sökande till utbildningarna domineras av män under 24 år med huvudsakligen gymnasial bakgrund. Sökande med folkhögskola eller högskoleprov som bakgrund är ovanliga. Det är också män under 24 år som till största del slutat söka till nämnda program. Andelen kvinnliga sökande är förhållandevis liten och har minskat ytterligare särskilt till sjöingenjörsprogrammen.

    Den minskande sökpopulationen har också resulterat i färre examina och förstagångsutfärdade behörigheter. Prognosen är att antalet examina och förstagångsutfärdade behörigheter kommer fortsätta falla i allt snabbare takt de närmaste åren på grund av allt färre sökande.

    På grund av den relativt smala sökpopulationen, som i huvudsak utgörs av män under 24 år, har utbildningarna gjort sig helt beroende av denna grupp. När denna grupp sökanden sviktar blir utfallet mycket påtagligt.

    Orsakerna till att allt färre söker till sjöbefälsutbildning har inte närmare undersökts i denna studie. Teoretiskt är incitamenten för val och skäl till utbildning komplex men en mängd underliggande faktorer. Delvis kan det finnas demografiska orsaker till fallande söktryck. Dessutom har det förekommit massmedialt uppmärksammade fall med kränkande särbehandling vilka kan ha påverkat såväl sökintresse som genomförandet av påbörjad utbildning. Anledningen till att studenter inte fullföljer utbildningen kan också bero på att studenternas föreställningar om sjöbefälsyrket och dess utbildningar inte införlivas vilket skapar frustration och avhopp. Andra studier visar att hälsoproblem eller andra personliga problem är en källa till att inte slutföra sina studier. Det behövs emellertid ytterligare studier för att stärka kunskapsläget avseende sjöbefälsstudenter, deras motivation och sökargument.

    As shipping develops, the training for the personnel who will work on board must also be developed. Ahead of a major revision of the Maritime Engineering program at Linnaeus University we have on behalf of programme director Tobias Hedin investigated what Chief Engineers think that students and newly graduated Maritime Engineers lack or are overeducated in.

    The investigation, which was completely anonymous, was carried out with the help of a survey where the Chief Engineers had to answer six different questions. The survey was distributed to the Chief Engineers with the help of the shipping companies HR departments, this to hopefully achieve a higher response rate.

    It appeared that the general opinion was that, among other things, further training in electricity, automation, more basic knowledge in workshop technology as well as maintenance of commonly used equipment on board is desirable.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the study is to identify work hazards by analyzing the work activities and work environment during a separator overhaul onboard a ship. To identify risks the study used the Swedish Work Environment Authority´s regulation AFS 2012:02, the assessment form KIM 1 and a biomechanical program ALBA. The results show that there are risks for stress load on the body and that there is room for improvements. An example of an improvement is to design an additional workbench to allow proper work postures and decrease the number of lifts. The results also show the importance of using the right technique while lifting to reduce the chance of stress load. The study can be used for further studies on the work environment hazards onboard ships.

    The purpose of this thesis was to examine which techniques exists to fight fires in electrical vehicles aboard ships and which harmful substances electrical vehicles releases when burning.

    To answer these questions, we performed a meta-analysis to understand some of the harmful gases that will be present during an EV fire, how to minimize the health hazard that comes with fires in lithium-ion batteries using certain equipment and what measures that can be taken aboard ships. 

    Li-ion batteries have also proven to be problematic to extinguish, but there have emerged certain extinguishing agents to fight these types of fires. In this thesis we look at some of these extinguishing agents.

    As technology being used in battery powered vehicles is still new and just becoming common on our streets, there is not a whole lot of directives on how to be effective in extinguishing them, prevent reignition and protect the health of people abord ships. That is why we have chosen to look at what is being used on shore and see if it can be applied on ships.

    Monitoring key performance indicators (KPI) give practitioners immersive experience that is priceless when it comes to decision making and performance-enhancing in software companies. Used together with different tools that enable visualization of KPIs, users obtain big advantages that enable quick troubleshooting and detections of errors that could emerge in a product or a system. Many studies have been followed out in the field of data visualization using KPIs and digital dashboards. Still, the subject of KPIs providing valuable information to companies that are developing HR and payroll systems is relatively unexplored.

    The purpose of this thesis has been to investigate how essential KPIs should be visualized on a digital dashboard using a case company that focuses on developing HR and payroll systems. To investigate the phenomenon, five different interviews were conducted, and a digital dashboard was developed. The interviewees that participated in the empiric data collection were employees stationed in different teams with various authorities and experiences in the field of dashboards and KPIs.

    Previous works in the field of data visualization indicates that KPIs can be used and presented in various ways. When presenting KPIs on a dashboard, there are different factors that are of big influence of how successful the visualization gets. There are no complete templates on how KPIs should be visualized, however there are guidelines on how a dashboard could be shaped. Something that previous works and different interviewees in the present study agreed on was that a dashboard should consist of 4 to 8 KPIs. Too many KPIs can decrease the chance of obtaining the advantages that monitoring and visualizing KPIs on a digital dashboard can bring. Something that emerged from the study is the importance of first identify what to visualize and then implement how.

    Among the answers during the data collection, many interviewees found the number of users that were logged in on their products as something that would be useful to monitor. The reason for this was partly that the interviewees considered that by monitoring these numbers, it could increase the pride among the colleagues. The interviewees thought that it might boost morale among the employees if they visualized the many users of the products they are developing.

    Modern ships have the ability to navigate with the use of ECDIS only. ECDIS is dependent on many subsystems to function optimally. Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is a tool with which you can examine a specific system to detect potential construction errors and deficiencies in the production design. This thesis has used a FMEA to investigate ECDIS simulators at Sjöfartshögskolan in Kalmar to examine how ECDIS was affected when one or more of the subsystems connected to ECDIS have failed. The purpose of this study was to detect design errors, deficiencies and limitations of the ECDIS simulators at Sjöfartshögskolan in Kalmar. It could be demonstrated that some of the alarms in ECDIS that should alert the navigator that a subsystem has failed not has worked according to the manufacturer´s instructions. Additionally has some features of ECDIS not operated according to the manufacturer's instructions and some simulator functions which should test a specific situation in a safe environment have not worked.

    På marknaden idag sätts det allt större krav på att företag ska kunna leverera unika produkter med hög kvalité för vara så attraktiva på marknaden som möjligt. Det har därför blivit allt mer vanligt inom industrier att man delar av sin standard produktion till projektbaserad produktion för att lösa specifika uppgifter. De företag som har många projekt samtidigt är oftast utformad som en multi-projektorganisation. Det karakteristiska draget för en multi-projektorganisation är att fler projekt bedrivs parallellt av samma personal. Fördelen med detta arbetssätt är att företag kan använda de mänskliga resurserna på ett effektivt sätt, då kunskap kan överföras mellan de olika projekten. Projektledarnas roll i företaget blir då allt viktigare samt en effektiv projektstyrning och projektkoordination. I en multi-projektorganisation så kan störningar i ett projekt påverka de övriga projekten. Det är därför viktigt med en jämn fördelning av arbetet och beläggning för projektledarna, inte bara för projektets resultat utan även för arbetsmiljön så att inte det skapas onödig stress eller ovisshet. Projektkoordinatorns roll i organisationen blir då att koordinera projektledarna så deras arbetsmiljö blir hållbar. Att arbeta i en multi-projektmiljö förväntas att öka i framtiden men det finns lite studier inom detta område. Speciellt hur man undviker problemen och vilka förutsättningar som är viktiga för att bedriva en hälsosam och effektiv projektkoordinering.

    Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vilka förutsättningar som är viktiga vid projektkoordinering och föreslå hjälpmedel för projektkoordinatorns dagliga arbete. Detta sker genom att undersöka projektkoordinering i ett fallföretag och få en förståelse för deras arbetssätt och metoder. Resultatet används för att utveckla och säkerställa en bra och hållbar arbetsmiljö för de anställda samt höja effektiviteten för projektorganisationen.

    Datainsamling har skett genom en kvalitativ fallstudie på Holtab AB. Den har gjorts genom intervjuer och observationer samt studier av dokument. Samtidigt gjordes en kvantitativ datainsamling för att ta reda på vilka problem som generellt förekommer på företag där projektledarna arbetar med flera projekt samtidigt. Detta gjordes genom enkäter via mail.

    Det har blivit tydligt under studien att företag som arbetar i bygg- eller tillverkningsindustrin har speciellt svårt att planera framtiden då projekten måste startas direkt och leveranstiderna är korta. Ett problem som Holtab´s organisation har i dagsläget är att de inte har en korrekt överblick på projektledarnas beläggning. Holtab är just nu i en fas där deras projektorganisation växter och det har anställts fler projektledare under de senaste åren, vilket har gjort att projektchefens roll som projektkoordinator har blivit allt mer nödvändig. Tillsammans med Holtabs projektchef och projektledarna så skapades en kravspecifikation för ett verktyg. Verktyget fick namnet PCAO (Projekt Coordination And Overview) och hade som mål att hjälpa projektorganisationens dagliga arbete och vara ett stöd till projektkoordineringen. PCAO ger projektkoordinatorn möjlighet att få en överblick över hur projektledarnas tid är fördelade i nuläget och i framtiden. Detta ger en möjlighet att kunna se framtida kritiska moment då projektorganisationen är överbelastade under en period. Genom en bra överblick av projektorganisationen så kan fördelningen av projekt hanteras smidigare, vilket gör att det blir lättare att se till att det blir en jämnare arbetsfördelning. Detta resulterar att projektkoordinatorn kan ge projektledarna en bättre arbetsmiljö och bättre förutsättningar för att kunna göra ett så bra och effektivt arbete som möjligt.

    In this study 14 e-commerce platforms are compared based on their functionality. The functionality has been identified to increase sales and facilitate scalability. To rate the impact of the functions, e-tailors in the niche of clothing and accessories were asked to respond a questionnaire. To identify relevant functionality for both of the approaches, the researchers used literature. The functionality were used as a framework when comparing the 14 e-commerce platforms. This study indicates that all functions are not equal. Responsive design and multiple payment solutions are considered most critical and are directly linked to increased sales figures. For the e-retailers to achieve scalability, this study finds that purchasable add-ons and themes plays a big role. The e-commerce platforms were rated thanks to data collection and data analysis. Abantecart and Opencart both received high ratings regarding functionality and the ability to increase sales numbers and enable future expansions.

    Abstract [en]

    This study was performed in order to analyze and evaluate the effects of dosing sulfur to the combustion process in a bio fueled boiler. Equipment for this purpose was installed to the bio boiler at a district heating plant in Arvika in order to overcome high levels of carbon monoxide in the flue gas. The analysis has been carried out with regard to how well the sulfur dosage is fulfilling its intended purpose but also to possible side effects. Corrosion risks, levels of unburned sulfur in flue gas, flue gas condensate, air and bottom ash along with what happens chemically in the combustion process have been studied. Operational reports from the bio fueled boiler was studied and analyzed. To find out other effects of adding sulfur to the combustion a literature study was performed as well as direct contact with experts on the subject. CO content in the flue gas drops when adding sulfur to the combustion process. Laboratory analysis and operational reports indicate a presence of sulfur in the flue gas, flue gas condensate and fly ash and bottom ash. The results show that the levels are acceptable. The risk of causing corrosion in the plant by adding sulfur to the combustion is considered low. The current knowledge of what is happening chemically in the combustion process by the addition of sulfur is insufficient. Full-scale and laboratory experiments have been carried out without being able to show exactly how the sulfur lowers CO concentrations in flue gases.

    Abstract [en]

    Mob Programming has become increasingly used in today's software development teams due to its new and innovative work approach. Mob Programming is a collaborative work method that was first introduced in 2002 and was described as a team consisting of two or more developers working together in the same space, at the same time, on the same issue and at the same computer. The Driver and Navigator roles are often used in conjunction with the work method to enable a dynamic work structure. The previous research carried out regarding Mob Programming has focused on its general structure, benefits, and risks when using it. Previous research has also investigated how the work method is being used in different software development teams. A lot of previous research has been studying the subject in a general manner which fails to bring up the individual in relation to the work method. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of using Mob Programming on a daily or occasional basis regarding employee well-being and individual performance. The study also intended to investigate differences between the daily and occasional users of Mob Programming. A qualitative method with semi-structured interviews and observations was applied for its ability to extract in-depth and valuable information. The participants chosen for this study derived from four different development teams who worked at Fortnox in Växjö where one of four teams used Mob Programming on a daily basis. A thematic analysis was used to organize and create a structure regarding the information from the interviews. Three themes with specific sub-codes were created using the thematic analysis: Learning, Team dynamics, Individual dynamics, which derived from the interview questionnaire. The study found that the majority of the informants were impacted in a positive way regarding well-being when using Mob Programming. Reduced individual work pressure and stress were two of the prominent factors that contributed to this. However, some individuals felt negative about the work method. This was often due to the feeling of being constantly watched or not being comfortable with the teambased structure of Mob Programming. The most noticeable findings regarding individual performance were positive in relation to knowledge sharing and problemsolving due to the "one-piece flow” that helped the teams streamline their work process from start to finish. The study found that the use of the Driver and Navigator roles was the most pronounced differentiation between the daily and occasional users of Mob Programming. The findings pointed towards a more structured and proper use of the roles when observing the daily users in comparison to the occasional users.

    Detta arbete inriktar sig att modernisera Böta Kvarn Kraftstation. Stationen är gammal och dess utrustning är i behov av en uppgradering. För detta ändamål togs de fram offertunderlag innehållande en teknisk beskrivning med tillhörande information angående kraftstationen. Denna skickades till flertalet leverantörer varvid Cargo & Kraft och Vattenkraftsbolaget svarade. Valet föll på Cargo & Kraft. Deras lösning är en semikaplan med tillhörande utrustning som teoretiskt kan generera ca 1.57 GWh per år. Detta ger en ökad produktion av 1,22 GWh och en ökad inkomst för kraftstation av ca 941 500 kr per år. Stationens tillgänglighet kommer via uppgraderingen att öka och anläggningen blir helautomatisk med bland annat sms-larm vid driftproblem.

    Work in enclosed spaces is a common occurrence on board ships. Unfortunately, accidents associated with confined spaces are also common. In many accidents, even those who intend to help a distressed person in an enclosed space can suffer injuries or in the worst case lose their lives. This results in more people injured or killed than the emergency first had. This study has through a qualitative reaserch method, interviwed six respondents with a semi-structured interview. The respondents consisted of naval officer students from the Swedish Naval Officer Universities in Sweden. The study investigated how the exercises aboard the ships prepare the crew for evacuation from enclosed spaces. The study found that in the respondent’s experience that it is practiced too seldomly and because of that it may arise some uncertainty in those situations. Many respondents felt that they could not save anyone in a fast enough time and that evacuations from confined spaces are a very difficult task.The study’s result indicates a lack of knowledge in the situation of evacuation from enclosed spaces.

    Abstract [en]

    At Kalmar Maritime Academy (KMA) the first-year students at the Master Mariner program complete a course in the use of ARPA. The course includes eight simulator exercises, where seven of them are completed in pairs and the last exercise is an individual assessment. Previously, instructors have encouraged students to choose a new partner for each of the first seven exercises; however, the reason for this strategy has not been well documented.

     

    The aim of this study was to examine the effect of fixed versus rotating bridge teams on the individual learning outcome. During an eight-week course in spring 2012, two groups of students were asked to work either with the same or a new partner for each exercise during a course. The result showed no difference between the two groups with regard to the individual assessment, and the students who failed did so because of inadequate interpretation of the ARPA information, and not because of insufficient radar knowledge.

    The purpose of this study is to research how different shipping companies and crews relate to the absence of regulations. Previous research shows that fires in lithium-ion batteries differ from fires in conventional cars because there is a risk of thermal runaway being initiated in the cells, which means that the risk of re-ignition is high, and the fire is difficult to extinguish with limited amounts of water. The method used is a semi-structured interview aimed at creating a dialogue with well-developed responses between the respondent and the researchers through an interview guide. A shipping company representative and a captain from three different ro-ro shipping companies with three different trafficked zones were interviewed. The results show that there are differing opinions within the industry regarding regulations and the risk of transporting electric cars depending on the speed range and type of ro-ro vessel used for transportation. More research on how to effectively extinguish fires in electric cars onboard ro-ro ships is recommended.

    Artificial intelligence is a machines ability to make its own decisions. The machine is then supposed to take action based on the decision, this without the involvement of a human.

    The positional accuracy for ships is something that has become increasingly more demanding, especially in the offshore industry. With the aid of a Dynamic positioning system, a great accuracy can be achieved.

    This undertaking investigates which system that will be most suited to use for a positioning system aimed for a model of the ship, Calmare Nyckel. The project evaluates positioning with the aid of four access points evenly distributed over two networks. The project illustrates a number of different techniques based on data signals, which are then modulated by a hardware unit. Because of the low-cost aim, this resulted in the usage of ESP32 and WiFi as the systems of choice.

    Abstract [en]

    The middle manager situation is sometimes squeezed between requirements from different parties at the same time as they are crucial for the development of the organization. Masters, chief engineers and managers in the catering department onboard are middle managers squeezed between the office requirements and the working conditions of their crew. The purpose of this study was to look into the middle managers conditions with focus on the work for good working environment onboard ships in the commercial shipping industry. A study was made consisting of two main parts, first a literature review and secondly focus group interviews. The literature review looked for findings about the middle managers work for occupational health and safety, which were mostly about industries and organisations ashore. These findings were tested in the focus groups in order to find out if they applied also for the commercial shipping industry and if there are any special things to consider there. The focus group members were of both genders, from different management positions and companies within the Swedish commercial shipping industry. So what recommendations can be made in order to improve the middle managers work for a good working environment or occupational health and safety (OHS)? Recommendations are given about competence, staff engagement, policies, shared leadership and administrative workload.

    Three findings are suggested for further research, shared leadership, administrative workload and client pressure. It is interesting that the type of shared leadership that are found onboard seems to be rather unique for the commercial shipping industry.

    In this thesis perceptions of the role of the Chief officer in relation to the crew's motivation for work has been investigated. Data has been collected from eight people who worked as Chief officers through a questionnaire and interviews which has given qualitative statements in three main areas: Motivational measures from Chief officer, Other factors influencing motivation, and Organizational support for the Chief officer. A majority of the interviewees indicate that important for motivation are: The content of the work and that it feels meaningful and the cohesion of the working group. Of particular importance for the respondents are to provide employee responsibilities and to give feedback on accomplished work, create involvement for the operation onboard, as well as using objectives and results follow-up. Their behavior towards the ratings are important. Other factors that are important for the motivation include: Employment conditions, Food, Recreation Activities, Gym and Internet. The organizational support for the Chief officer has been found to be relatively weak and are also not sought after by the Chief officers to any greater extent. The factor considered most important and effective factors are clear objectives and expectations from the Master.

    Abstract [en]

    Exercises on board ships form a large part of the work to ensure a safe working environment for the crew. In order to develop the crew's ability to manage emergencies, exercises are performed in different segments, such as fire, man overboard and lifeboat exercises. How often these exercises are to be conducted is regulated by SOLAS developed by the IMO. In accordance with the regulations that have been developed, it is then up to each individual shipping company and vessel to maintain these requirements. The exercises must be performed despite harsh weather or difficulty finding time, between tight harbour runs. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the attitude to the safety drills on board Swedish-flagged tankers and whether there are external circumstances that could lead to an exercise not being conducted correctly. The survey also aimed to investigate how exercises are performed on different ships. The results showed that all the exercises were conducted according to the regulations. However, there were shortcomings in the quality. The reason for the shortcomings could be found in the lack of time, weather conditions and high workload. Typical situations where the exercises were not conducted could be in launching a lifeboat in harsh weather, or an exercise in fire protection in harsh weather or sub-zero temperatures. Exercises are therefore postponed or conducted on a theoretical basis without practical steps. The attitude to exercises is positive and the desire to create exercises with high quality is great. It is the time limits that puts obstacles in the way of more planning and better execution.

    Många verksamheter som arbetar med systemutveckling har idag anammat agila projektmetoder för sina utvecklingsprojekt. Den agila metoden bygger på att vara flexibel och inkrementell med en hög grad av involvering av projektets beställare under hela utvecklingsprocessen. Det agila angreppssättet skiljer sig således från det traditionella där man arbetar sekventiellt.

    För att den agila projektmetodiken skall fungera effektivt krävs det att hela verksamheten är anpassad till att stötta den med roller, rutiner och processer. Anpassningen är viktig eftersom ett utvecklingsprojekt inte bara berör utvecklingsteamen, utan även beställaren som bör vara mycket involverad under hela projektförloppet. Trots detta har ofta anpassningen till den agila projektmetodiken bara skett i leverantörsorganisationen och inte i den övriga verksamheten. Syftet med uppsatsen är därför att undersöka hur samarbetet ser ut inom en verksamhet som har både beställare och leverantör internt och där leverantören önskar att arbeta enligt en agil projektmetodik.

    Tre fallföretag har intervjuats för att samla in kvalitativ empiri. Empirin analyserades sedan med hjälp av ett teoretiskt konceptuellt ramverk som presenterar faktorer som påverkar en leverantörs kundfokus. Ramverket användes som ett hjälpmedel för hur leverantören bör samarbeta med beställaren och på så sätt kunde vi utvärdera resultatet. Analysen visade på två huvudsakliga utmaningar. Den första handlade om risken för informationsförlust under projektförloppet mellan beställare och leverantör. Den andra var att man upplevde att företagsstrukturen inte fullt ut stöttade den agila projektmetodiken genom att ha kvar roller och processer från den traditionella projektmetodiken som inte matchar med den agila. För att lyckas med en agil projektmetodik krävs det enligt leverantören att hela organisationen kommer överens om hur man ska arbeta agilt och varför.

    Abstract [en]

    During the last few decades, the PSS literature has documented industrial firms’ transformation from the product dominant logic of business to product-service bundles constituted by machines and related services. This transformation has had several dramatic implications on firms’ profitability, strategy, operations, organizational setting, sales and marketing approaches, and R&D practices. However, more recently, industrial firms have started to adopt various smart technologies that are embedded within the PSS. The use of smart technologies in PSS gives rise to the new types of PSS that are referred to in this paper as Smart PSS. Based on a literature review of 43 papers from relevant academic fields, this paper seeks answer to the following research question: what are the value creating features of smart product service systems (Smart PSS) in industrial firms? We synthesize the knowledge on Smart PSS to provide a definition and show the distinctive features of Smart PSS and propose an agenda for future research.

    Abstract [en]

    The manufacturing industry are dependent of engineering expertise. Currently the ability to supply the industry with engineering graduates and staff that have an up-to- date and relevant competences might be considered as a challenge for the society. In this paper an education approach is presented where academia - industry - research institutes cooperate around the development and implementation of master level courses. The methods applied to reach the educational goals, concerning expert competence within remote diagnostics, have been on site and remote lectures given by engineering, medical and metrology experts. The pedagogical approach utilized has been flipped classroom. The main results show that academic courses developed in cooperation with industry requires flexibility, time and effort from the involved partners. The evaluation interviews indicate that student are satisfied with the courses and pedagogical approach but suggests more reconciliation meetings for course development. Labs early in the course was considered good, and division of labs at the system and the component level. However further long- term studies of evaluation of impact is necessary.

    This thesis is part of a major project that the Port of Gothenburg has embarked upon, and is produced as a result of a project directive. The purpose of that project is to renew its current fire protection in Energihamnen (the Energy Port) but also meet future requirements. The purpose of the present study is to examine what expectations shipping companies and ship´s officers, which regularly arrive to the Energy Port, have on the Port of Gothenburg’s fire prevention systems and fire emergency plans. Further investigated are the requirements that form the basis for the fire protection equipment onboard tankers that regularly arrive in the Energy Port. To obtain answers from the above mentioned purpose, interviews were conducted with three ship owners and five ship officers, and this was combined with a literature summary which consists of the regulatory framework that places specific requirements and recommendations for the fire prevention equipment that will be on board tankers. The interviews were conducted to include the shipping industry's expectations of the Port of Gothenburg’s emergency procedures during cargo operations. The result shows that the majority of respondents expected that the Port of Gothenburg should have firefighting equipment on their docks that can extinguish fires onboard the ship’s deck. They also expected that the port's emergency response plans should be well rehearsed and should also quickly come into force during an emergency.

    On board the M/S Calmare Nyckel, during normal operation in open water. It isonly one of the generators, and the main engine in operation. At present, the mainengine on the Calmare Nyckel is not equipped with a shaft generator.In the event of a failure in the electricity producing generator, this results in ablackout that knocks out the manoeuvrability to the extent that the ship's rudderservo stops working together with the ship's bilge & fire pump. Should the ship'srudder servo shut down, this means that the ship must be maneuverered by handwith a manual steering pump, placed on the bridge.Navigation equipment, VHF and lanterns switch on and get their voltage from theship's UPS. The second generator that is on standby does not start automatically inthe event of a blackout but must be started locally and then switched on manually.During these minutes it takes to start another generator, the ship’s manoeuvrabilityis limited.The author has therefore been commissioned by Lars Fors at the University ofMaritime Studies to be given a project plan with intermediate goals for anemergency generator installation on the school ship Calmare Nyckel.     To stay competitive on today’s market and satisfy the constantly increasing customer requirements, working with continuous and cost-effective improvement is a requirement. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a model to continuously and cost-effectively improve the quality of a management system within trading business, taking the environmental aspect and impact of organizational changes up on personnel in consideration. The model has been developed based on theoretical management strategies and improvement methodologies: Process management, Change management, TQM, Lean, Continuous and cost-effective improvement, PDCA and Kaizen. The developed model should result in a high-qualitative management system that continuously should be improved and maintained, to streamline the supply chain and in turn be profitable. In order to enhance the sustainability of the model, it has been tested at a case company. From the results, conclusions can be drawn that concrete outcomes of the model implementation takes time, but it serve its purpose and generates in great results.

    The technology is under continuous development and our environment has gradually become more digitalized over the years. Nowadays, thus, there is a constant presence of various digital devices in our lives, such as the smartphone.

    The purpose of the research study is to investigate how user’s behavior patterns of the use of smartphones is affected by a black and white theme. To answer the research aim, the authors of the study chose to investigate how young adults' spent time on their smartphones’ digital screens is affected by a black and white theme, and how young adults experience the time spent on their smartphones’ digital screens when these are set on a black and white theme.

    The literature review, which was based on previous research on visualization and digital addiction, provided a basis for analyzing, explaining and discussing the collected empirical data. The study was conducted using a mixed methods approach, where quantitative data collected from seven participants were analyzed using the statistical analysis program SPSS; and qualitative data collected through individual interviews with the seven participants were analyzed thematically.

    The findings showed that the users’ spent screen time on their smartphones was reduced when it was turned into black and white theme. Thus, the gray scale has a significant effect on the spent screen time.  In addition, the findings showed that the device was not appealing and interesting for the users. Furthermore, the gray scale affected the ability of the users to concentrate, when using the smartphone device. Users’ concentration became more difficult to maintain, and the navigation on the screens became more complicated.

    Abstract [en]

    This essay studies the type of tiredness and the reasons behind the tiredness where groundings and or collisions have occurred. The study uses 15 official accident reports which have been collected from the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority and the British marine accident investigation branch (MAIB) where the study used the words trötthet (tiredness) and fatigue to limit the number of reports and to keep the reports we find relevant to our topic. We analysed all the reports using the HFACS method where the sequence of events were picked apart into smaller pieces to show the root causes of the accidents. Three main reasons behind the accidents were identified. These three reasons are deactivated BNWAS systems, six by six watches, and a lack of a lookout on the bridge, despite this breaching the rules and regulations. Since the problems are often based in breaches of regulations and loopholes which allow vessels of limited size 500-3000GT which allow the master to be a regular OOW. Because the problems are usually based in a breach of regulations, the study sees no reason in recommending other actions than to work on information to officers regarding the dangers of having a disabled BNWAS system om the bridge.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to understand key challenges in turning

    strategy to performance, and with that as a fundament suggest a model

    for the strategy implementation process. The work is based on a

    theoretical framework that brings together and merges different areas of

    science to create new synergies and leveraged results. In this case, the

    area of Strategic Implementation receives added value from mainly

    Innovation- and Knowledge Management, as aspects of the intersection

    between Industrial Dynamic and Organizational Behavior. Moreover, due

    to the strategic focus, additional theory regarding Technology Marketing

    is also included. Departing from the theoretical framework, an empirical

    study was conducted by qualitative interviews of two managerial levels at

    an international conglomerate.

    The outcome of both theoretical and empirical findings is discussed and

    analyzed, and results in two main recommendations, addressing the

    question of how the challenges could be solved with innovation and

    knowledge management as a fundament for implementation. One of the

    main recommendations is cyclic implementation routines, advancing in a

    loop consistent of; Strategic selection; Enabling of effective knowledge

    acquisition; Implementation; and Learning. The other main

    recommendation is an Innovative and learning organization, involving

    Shared vision, leadership and the will to innovate; Appropriate structure;

    Effective Team Working; Continuing and stretching individual

    development; Extensive communication; High involvement in

    innovation; External focus; and a Creative climate.

    Coherent with these recommendations, a model is presented where the

    cultural components could be regarded as the fundament of the

    organization, which is complemented with the learning cycle and regard

    to the organization’s holistic level of maturity. This model strives to

    inspire to “manage the flow of organizational culture to make the wheels

    of implementation routines spin”.
