Patterns of neighborhood environment attributes related to physical activity across 11 countries: a latent class analysis2013In: International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, E-ISSN 1479-5868, Vol. 10, article id 34Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Neighborhood environment studies of physical activity (PA) have been mainly single-country focused. The International Prevalence Study (IPS) presented a rare opportunity to examine neighborhood features across countries. The purpose of this analysis was to: 1) detect international neighborhood typologies based on participants' response patterns to an environment survey and 2) to estimate associations between neighborhood environment patterns and PA. Methods: A Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was conducted on pooled IPS adults (N=11,541) aged 18 to 64 years old (mean=37.5 +/- 12.8 yrs; 55.6% women) from 11 countries including Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Hong Kong, Japan, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and the U. S. This subset used the Physical Activity Neighborhood Environment Survey (PANES) that briefly assessed 7 attributes within 10-15 minutes walk of participants' residences, including residential density, access to shops/services, recreational facilities, public transit facilities, presence of sidewalks and bike paths, and personal safety. LCA derived meaningful subgroups from participants' response patterns to PANES items, and participants were assigned to neighborhood types. The validated short-form International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) measured likelihood of meeting the 150 minutes/week PA guideline. To validate derived classes, meeting the guideline either by walking or total PA was regressed on neighborhood types using a weighted generalized linear regression model, adjusting for gender, age and country. Results: A 5-subgroup solution fitted the dataset and was interpretable. Neighborhood types were labeled, "Overall Activity Supportive (52% of sample)", "High Walkable and Unsafe with Few Recreation Facilities (16%)", "Safe with Active Transport Facilities (12%)", "Transit and Shops Dense with Few Amenities (15%)", and "Safe but Activity Unsupportive (5%)". Country representation differed by type (e. g., U. S. disproportionally represented "Safe but Activity Unsupportive"). Compared to the Safe but Activity Unsupportive, two types showed greater odds of meeting PA guideline for walking outcome (High Walkable and Unsafe with Few Recreation Facilities, OR=2.26 (95% CI 1.18-4.31); Overall Activity Supportive, OR=1.90 (95% CI 1.13-3.21). Significant but smaller odds ratios were also found for total PA. Conclusions: Meaningful neighborhood patterns generalized across countries and explained practical differences in PA. These observational results support WHO/UN recommendations for programs and policies targeted to improve features of the neighborhood environment for PA.

Self-reported symptoms of low energy availability among female elite athletes and controls2023Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Aim

We aimed to investigate symptoms of low energy availability (LEA) among athletes and recreational active people, and the associations with EDs, excessive exercise, and motivation for training and dietary behavioural changes.

    Methods

Swedish female national team athletes (n=150) from 26 sports, and recreational active women (n=108), 18-39 years were recruited via sport organizations and social media. Participants filled out an anonymous on-line survey comprising the LEA in Females Questionnaire (LEAF-Q), the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), the Major Depression Index (MDI), the Exercise Addiction Inventory (EAI), and  the Motivation to Change Questionnaire (MCQ). LEAF-Q total score >8 and EDE-Q Global score >2.3  were used to classify participants as having symptoms of LEA and eating disorders (EDs), respectively.

    Results

Of all participants, 47% had symptoms of LEA with no difference between elite athletes (47%) and controls (48%). Participants with LEA had lower body mass and BMI compared to those with no symptoms, while no differences were found in age or training load. Most of the participants with LEA (69%) did not have symptoms of EDs. However, when excluding all participants with ED symptoms (n=65), participants with LEA had higher EDE-Q sub scale scores, MDI and EAI scores, and they reported poorer health status and reduced ability to increase energy intake and to lower the training load compared to participants with no LEA symptoms.

    Conclusion

Our findings confirm earlier indications that symptoms of LEA is frequent among elite athletes as well as sedentary people, and that most LEA cases do not have EDs. However, our findings suggest that symptoms of LEA may still be associated with poor well-being, restricted eating and excessive training behaviour and negative focus on body shape and weight. Reversing LEA by increased energy intake and/or reduced training load is the only treatment to prevent REDs health and performance implications. Our findings therefore emphasize the need for multidisciplinary prevention strategies to ensure necessary dietary and training behavioural changes.

Effects on white blood cells in senior citizens during post exercise recovery in three different environments (indoors, simulated outdoors and outdoors)2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

Natural environments are known to promote health and may also provide extraordinary conditions for post exercise recovery (Kuo 2015). In the project Health Effects of Recreation Outdoors (HERO) we explore the hypothesis that post exercise recovery in natural environments may be reflected in white blood cell counts (WBC). In our study 50 seniors (age >65 years) performed moderate physical activity (20 min) followed by passive recovery (2h) in three different environments (indoors, simulated outdoors and “true” outdoors).

    Method

The experimental setup was a randomized cross-over design, thus all test persons did all treatments in a randomized order. We sampled white blood cells (WBC-diff), which were used to detect and quantify inflammatory response.

    Results

Our early findings provide some support for the hypothesis that environment may impose differences in recovery effectiveness. White blood cell count (WBC-diff) appears to differ between the treatments and there is a significant interaction between sampling time and recovery environment in the monocytes, suggesting that the monocyte numbers differ, not only between sampling times but also between environments. In addition, WBC also show that some of the test persons develop leukocytosis during exercise and that white blood cell levels decrease rapidly immediately post exercise to levels significantly lower than base line values.

    Discussion

Our results suggest that moderate physical activity in senior citizens may result in acute leukocytosis (see e.g. Sand et. al. 2013) and that recovery effectiveness (e.g in monocyte response) may be dependent upon environmental factors. The clinical importance of our results are not fully understood but there has been suggested an “open window” immediately post exercise in which infection risk may be elevated (Pedersen & Toft 2000) and it is possible that recovery out of doors may reduce this risk.

Outdoor Exercise is More Efficient than Indoor Exercise in Senior Citizens. Physiological Evidence from the HERO Project2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

INTRODUCTION: IntroductionPhysical exercise has been proven beneficial for health in all ages. In elderly, physical exercise, may contribute to prolonged life with maintained high quality and less costs associated with health care for society. In this study we explore if exercise out of doors may provide extra benefits as compared to exercise indoors and we measure power output, lactate levels and perceived effort in 49 senior citizens performing 20 minutes of moderate physical activity.METHODS:MethodThe HERO project is a randomized cross-over experiment with three different treatments <indoors, simulated="" outdoors="" and="">. The study sample consisted of 49 healthy senior citizens. They performed 20 minutes moderate intensity physical activity on an ergometer bike in all three conditions. Before immediately after and at minutes 10, 20, 30, 60 and 120 we sampled blood lactate. Power output was computed at 7 occasions during the 20 minutes of cycling, as was the rating of perceived exertion . Data was analyzed using mixed linear models. RESULTS:ResultsOur findings show that there were no differences between the two indoor treatments in any of the measured variables. In the outdoor treatment, however, there were significant effects on blood lactate levels and power output but not in perceived exertion, suggesting that exercise out of doors makes the test person more efficient although the experience of effort stay unaffected.CONCLUSION:Discussion/conclusionsOur results support the notion that the outdoors may provide extraordinary conditions for exercise, not only because it appear to results in more exercise/effort, the outdoors is also an “arena” with high availability and most often totally for free. Previous results from the HERO project also suggests that white blood cell counts are affected by the outdoor treatment, something that may be related to the observed increased power output herein

Recreational fishing in an educational intervention context promotes awareness and knowledge about nature in schoolchildren2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Outdoor activities may be intuitively associated with interest for nature and environmental concern. However, most scientific studies suggest that no such correlation exists. In this quantitative study we have used a questionnaire and explored the hypothesis that a one day educational intervention may be a successful tool in increasing environmental awareness, interest for nature and interest for recreational fishing. We present evidence suggesting that educational interventions in which young people are exposed to natural environments in a recreational fishing context have positive effects on interest for nature and recreational fishing, knowledge about nature and environmental awareness. Our findings also reveal that frequency of nature visits does not correlate with self estimated interest for nature.  We also show that the observed effects of the educational intervention “Klassdraget” appear to be larger for the girls which are, by tradition, less interested in recreational fishing as compared to boys.

Benefits of outdoor exercise and recovery outdoors in elderly2019In: HEPA Europe, Odense, Denmark, August 28-30, 2019: abstract book, 2019, p. 38-38Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the ”outdoors” has an added health effect on top of that of physical activity. This hypothesis is based on the fairly extensive volume of evidens suggesting that the outdoor environment is beneficial for overall health. We, however, consider most previous studies insufficiently designed in order to draw causal relationship between spending time outdoors and examined health parameters. In this study we state that our experimental design allows us to do just that.

    Methods:

In this randomized cross-over experimental design, 49 healthy subjects (+65 years, 27 female) performed a standardized submaximal bike ergometer test in three different environments (indoors, simulated outdoors and outdoors). The test consisted of 20 minutes cycling and subjects were instructed to stay between 11-13 at the Borg RPE scale (i.e. moderate intensity). Each test was followed by two hours of passive recovery. We measured power output, heart rate, lactate and counts of five fractions (lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophiles, basophiles and eosinophiles) of white blood cells (leukocytes) in circulation.

    Results:

Our results revealed that the outdoor treatment resulted in higher levels of lactate, higher heart rate and higher power output despite that there were no differences in Borg RPE-rating between the treatments. The white blood cell analysis showed an increase of circulating leukocytes in almost all fractions immediately post exercise in all treatments. Numbers decreased rapidly post exercise and the lymphocyte numbers stayed well under baseline for more than one hour during recovery. This is referred to as an “open window” where the immune function is temporarily suppressed and there is an elevated risk of infection of primarily URTI.

    Conclusions:

Our results not only suggest that exercise is more efficient out of doors such that more exercise/effort is obtained but also that recovery outdoors may be a way to decrease the risk of infections due to exercise induced immune suppression. The risk of getting an infection is known to be generally lower out of doors. Taken together, our results support the notion that exercising and spending time outdoors indeed is beneficial for health in senior citizens.

The effect of exercising in different environments on heart rate and power output among older adults–a randomized crossover study2022In: PLOS ONE, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 17, no 11, article id e0275886Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BackgroundA growing body of evidence suggests that exposure to nature is beneficial for human health. However, the observed health effect of nature may be mediated by physical activity and that humans are physically active at a higher intensity outdoors compared to when they are physical active indoors.ObjectiveThis study examines the variation of heart rate and power output for a fixed rating of perceived exertion in a group of healthy older adults in three different environments representing three levels of exposure to nature.MethodsTo this randomized, 3-by-3 crossover design study, healthy older adults (≥65 years) were recruited from local gyms. All participants participated in three experimental conditions; indoors, simulated outdoors and outdoor environments, in a randomized order. The participants exercised for 20 minutes at an intensity equivalent to a rating of 11–13 on the Borg scale for perceived exertion (RPE). Measurements of heart rate, power output (Watt) and ratings of perceived exertion were taken at minutes 1 to 6 and at minute 20. To examine the effect of the environment on heart rate and power, linear mixed models were used.ResultsIn all, 48 participants (56% females) were included in the analysis. No significant main effects on the outcomes were observed for power output (p = 0.073, η2 = 0.04) or heart rate (p = 0.067, η2 = 0.04)ConclusionNo significant effect on the outcomes was observed. However, borderline significant outcomes for power output or heart rate outdoors in nature, along with previous studies in the field, indicates that such an effect cannot be completely ruled out, but any effect is likely to be small. Future research examining health benefits of the independent exposure to nature are encouraged to adjust for the dose of physical activity.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study builds on students' views and perceptions about health and how health is affected in physical education. Many studies deal with the teacher 's view of the health concept of the subject and not on the student's vision. The purpose of our study is to see health from a student perspective, to achieve our result we interviewed thirty-two high school students to find out their views on how the subject is given in terms of teaching. The results indicate that students see health from a physical and psychological perspective, but that the teaching of the subject most affects the physical activity and aspect. Students find that the health concept of the subject is important and should be affected more than it does in teaching. The results have been analyzed according to a curriculum theory perspective where the focus is on realizing the stadium , which means how the content looks like in actual teaching in relation to policy documents and teachers' interpretations. In summary , the study from a student perspective how high school students perceive health - both their own beliefs and how they feel that it is found in teaching.

    Abstract [sv]

Friluftsliv och miljömedvetenhet bland ungdomar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Dock visar forskning skilda resultat i frågan.

Spinal alignment, mobility of the hip and thoracic spine and prevalence of low back pain in young elite cross-country skiers.2016In: Journal of Exercise Rehabilitation, ISSN 2288-176X, Vol. 12, no 1, p. 21-28Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigated the association between spinal alignment, mobility of the hips and the thoracic spine and low back pain in adolescent cross-country skiers. Cohort of 51 elite cross-country skiers from a cross-country skiing high school in Sweden participated in the study. Sagittal spinal alignment, active range of motion in flexion, extension and rotation of the thoracic spine as well as passive and active extension of the hips were measured. The participants also completed a questionnaire regarding training, competition, skiing technique and occurrence of low back pain. A simple linear regression was calculated to predict pain score based on thoraco-lumbar relation, with a significant (P<0.05) regression equation of y=-0.069x+2.280 (standard error of estimate, 0.034). Participants with greater lordosis than kyphosis were more likely to suffer from low back pain than subjects without this offset. Thoracic mobility and passive or active hip extension showed no correlation with low back pain. Sagittal spinal alignment seems to be related with low back pain among young elite cross-country skiers. This study shows that range of motion of the thoracic spine and hips do not have an effect on the prevalence of low back pain in this population.

    Abstract [en]

Adolescents in the industrial world are becoming less physically active and are increasingly adopting a sedentary life-style in front of computers and television screens. OBJECTIVE: to determine self-related health, physical activity, sleeping habits, prevalence of overweight, and body complaints in Australian senior high school students. METHODS: Participants were 466 high school students aged 15-17 years enrolled in academic and vocational programs. A questionnaire was completed at two senior high schools with questions about weight and height, health, physical activity, type of physical activity/sport, intensity, sleeping habits, and possible injuries or complaints during the last three months. RESULTS: Seventy seven percent of the high school students participated in sports on a regular basis. Compared with vocational programs, more males and females in academic programs participated in sports (71% and 80% respectively) (p = .036). Males reported significantly better health than females (p < .0001). 65% of the study group reported body complaints during the last 3 months. A higher number of females than males reported complaints about the back (p = .007) and the hip (p = .05). Good sleep was reported in 82.1% of males and in 76.6% of females. In males, 44.3% were often sleepy in the daytime (females 56.6%, p < .01). CONCLUSIONS: Underweight, physical activity and good sleep are factors with significant positive effect on good health, whereas overweight is a negative factor. Proper sleep habits and higher physical activity levels should be promoted among high school students, and TV viewing time and video game use restricted. Additionally, schools should provide opportunities for young people to participate in a wider range of physical activities that address their individual needs while promoting the health benefits of engaging in regular exercise.

Mobility, muscular strength and endurance in the cervical spine in Swedish air force pilots2001In: Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine, ISSN 0095-6562, E-ISSN 1943-4448, Vol. 72, no 4, p. 336-342Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

PURPOSE: Muscle strength, endurance and range of movement of the cervical spine in a group of Swedish Air Force jet pilots (AF) and in a reference group of conscripts doing their military service (RG) were compared. METHODS: We tested 30 (AF) 24-42 yr and 33 (RG) 19-22 yr. A questionnaire was used to document complaints. Maximum voluntary isometric muscle strength of the flexor and extensor muscles of the cervical spine and sub-maximum isometric endurance in the flexor and extensor muscles were measured. RESULTS: Eleven AF (37%) and four RG (12%) had experienced discomfort in the neck within the previous year. The pilots' flexor and extensor muscle strength (47 Nm and 65 Nm) was superior to that of the conscripts (36 Nm and 59 Nm) (p = 0.0001, p = < 0.05, respectively). However, the RG group had greater isometric endurance in the flexor muscles than AF (p = < 0.05) and greater neck rotation (p = <0.005). There was no difference between the two groups in the other variables. CONCLUSION: Differences between the groups with regard to muscle strength and endurance might depend on variations in work-related physical muscle strain, and/or differences in fiber composition in the muscles, which might be reflected by pilot selection procedures.

Reliability of sports related functional tests with emphasis on speed and agility in young athletes.2001In: Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, ISSN 0905-7188, E-ISSN 1600-0838, Vol. 11, no 4, p. 229-232Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present investigation was to test the reliability of two sports related functional tests, a speed test (slalom-test) and an agility test (hurdle-test). Eleven athletes aged 11 years (8 boys, 3 girls) participated voluntarily in the study. All subjects completed four different test sessions for both the slalom-test and the hurdle-test using six standard track hurdles placed at 2-m intervals along a 12-m length of track. There were no significant differences between testing sessions for either the slalom-test (P=0.99) or the hurdle-test (P=0.96), showing no systematic variation between test times. The intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.96 and 0.90 respectively, indicating a good reliability. We conclude that the slalom-test and the hurdle-test are reliable sports related functional tests for measuring speed and agility in groups of young athletic individuals.

AIM: Children and adolescents in the industrial world are becoming less

physically active and are adopting a sedentary lifestyle in front of computers

and TV. The aim of the present investigation was to determine self-related

health, physical activity, prevalence of overweight and body complaints in

high school students in Norway, and to compare students in academic

programs with those in vocational programs. METHODS: Seven hundred and

two high school students aged 16-19 years were included in the study. A

questionnaire was completed in three high schools and included questions

about weight and height, health, physical activity, type of physical

activity/sport, intensity, possible injuries or complaints during the last three

months. RESULTS: Twenty three percent of the students suffers from

overweight/obesity are at risk of being overweight. Males reported better

health than females (P<0.02). Sixty-six percent of the study group reported

body complaints during the last three months, a higher number of females

than males (P=0.001). Students in vocational programs reported poorer selfrelated

health than those in academic programs and the males reported

better self-related health generally than females. Furthermore, there were a

higher level of prevalence of overweight students in vocational programs

than academic programs (P=0.039). CONCLUSION: It is important to make it

easy for school children and adolescents to do physical activity at school and

during leisure time in order to prevent overweight and obesity as well as

Self-reported health, physical activity and prevalence of complaints in elite cross-country skiers and matched controls2005In: Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, ISSN 0022-4707, E-ISSN 1827-1928, Vol. 45, no 4, p. 547-552Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim. The purpose of this study was to compare physical health, physical activity and location for possible symptoms in high school students with cross-country skiers of the same age from ski high schools. Another aim was to study back pain with regards to influence on skiing.Methods. The subjects studied were: 92% (n=120) of all Swedish cross-country skiers at ski high schools and 68% (n=993) of regular high school students from the North part of Sweden answered a reliable questionnaire (r=1) with regards to health, physical activity and location of possible symptoms/injuries during the last 3 months. Furthermore, the skiers answered questions on possible ski related back pain.Results. All skiers were active also in other sports compared with 26% of the controls and at considerably higher levels of physical effort than the controls; 92% of the skiers and 76% of the controls described themselves as healthy, meaning "very good" or "good" (P=0.0001); 55% of the skiers and 64% of the controls reported recent symptoms (P=0.06); 47% of the skiers reported previous or present complaints of back pain, mainly low back pain, which could be relieved by changing body position from a flexed to a more extended one while skiing, and 77% reported their back pain to disappear during rest.Conclusion. These results show the need for encouraging regular high school students to participate in sport. It also shows the importance of introducing preventative strategies regarding back pain to long-distance cross-country skiers, who are exposed to a prolonged flexed position of their back.

    Abstract [en]

Objectives To evaluate possible changes in spinal curvature over a period of 5 years of an elite cross-country skiing squad, and to study whether there are any differences in this respect between individuals who report low back pain and those how do not. Participants Fifteen young cross-country skiers (M age=13.6±0.9) participated voluntarily throughout the entire study period. Main outcome measures Debrunner's kyphometer was used for measuring the difference between thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis of the spine. All subjects also answered a questionnaire including questions about ski-related low back pain, the amount of ski training, and participation in other sports. Results The results at the end of the 5-year period comprise data from 15 skiers (M age=18.5±0.9 years). The relationship between thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis increased from 3.5° to 13.1°, respectively (p=0.0001). Of the 15 elite cross-country skiers, seven reported low back pain at the 5-year examination. At the 5-year follow-up, skiers with low back pain showed significantly higher relationship between thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis than did those skiers without low back pain, 18.2° and 10.5°, respectively (p=0.035). Of the eight elite cross-country skiers without low back pain, seven were also involved in other sports (p=0.005). Conclusions Based on these findings, our advice is that adolescent cross-country skiers also should participate in other physical activities besides cross-country skiing.

Hur restriktionerna till följd av covid-19 har påverkat de äldres fysiska aktivitetsvanor: En kvantitativ enkätstudie2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Covid-19 posed changes for the entire population, not at least for the older adults who belonged to one of the risk groups. Many older people were forced to live in social isolation and could no longer do activities they had previously devoted their days to. They were advised to avoid places where people gather such as gyms. The older adults became limited in their everyday lives and therefor the purpose of this study is to investigate how the older adults physical activity habits were affected by the pandemic.

Methods: This is a quantitative survey. The participants age were 65 years or older. International Physical Activity Questionarie (IPAQ) short form was used to find out what the older adults physical activity habits look like today and the questionnaire was also modified to find out how the older adults activity habits looked like three years ago. Some questions were also created to find out how the older adults adapted their physical activity during the pandemic. The questionaries were collected through gyms and senior associations and were in paper form. The answers were compiled and analyzed in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).

Results: It showed that the older adults physical activity habits was not changed during the pandemic. There was not any significant difference between the physical activity levels before and after the pandemic.

Conclusion: There does not seem to be any major difference in the physical activity habits of the older adults before and after the pandemic.

Betygsättning: Lärarnas syn på betygsättning i Idrott och Hälsa2013Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Patients' experiences of physical activity on prescription with access to counsellors in routine care: a qualitative study in Sweden2019In: BMC Public Health, E-ISSN 1471-2458, Vol. 19, article id 210Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BackgroundPhysical activity on prescription (PAP) has been implemented in several countries, including Sweden, to support patients who might benefit from increased physical activity. This study explores the experiences of recipients of PAP in routine health care in Sweden that offers the recipients support from physical activity counsellors. The aim was to explore influences on engagement in physical activity by PAP recipients' from a long-term perspective.MethodsWe conducted individual semi-structured interviews using a topic guide with a purposively selected sample of 13 adult PAP recipients 1.5 to 2.5years after PAP. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed through inductive and deductive content analysis. The questions were informed by Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B), which was also used as a framework to analyse the data by means of categorizing the factors (influences on the behaviour).ResultsTen factors (i.e. sub-categories) that influenced the participants' engagement in physical activity were identified. PAP recipients' capability to engage in physical activity was associated with adapting the PAP to the individual's physical capacity and taking into account the individual's previous experiences of physical activity. PAP recipients' opportunity to engage in physical activity was related to receiving a prescription, receiving professional counselling and follow-up from a physical activity counsellor, collaboration between prescriber and counsellor, having access to appropriate activities, having a balanced life situation and having support from someone who encouraged continued physical activity. PAP recipients' motivation to engage in physical activity was associated with the desire to improve his or her health condition and finding activities that encouraged continuation.ConclusionsPAP recipients' engagement in physical activity was influenced by their capability, opportunity and motivation to undertake this behaviour. Numerous extraneous factors influence capability and motivation. Physical activity counsellors were found to be important for sustained activity because they use an individual approach to counselling and flexible follow-up adapted to each individual's need of support.

In our study, we focused on sports managers in Damallsvenskan, where wewant to research what specific duties they have but also what similarities anddifferences exist under the same working title. We know that there is a lackof understanding of a sports manager's role in an elite sportsclub. We had theopportunity to interview six different sports managers in Damallsvenskan, which meant that in the result, we got the answer on what their work dutieslooked like and whether it looks the same for everyone or if there are anydifferences. Furthermore, it emerges which factors affect a sports manager'sduties and what they themselves find difficult about the work.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Resistance training is the main method to increase strength and muscle mass. When the muscle is progressively overloaded and supported by adequate nutritional and recovery, the resulting adaptation may lead to subsequent gains of muscle mass. Resistance training athletes use numerous different training methods to achieve development of muscle mass. The lack of previous research on this specific topic makes it an interesting subject for investigation. Purpose: The objective of this essay was to describe the workout structure for hypertrophy training used by experienced strength training athletes. Method: In order to fulfill this purpose, a digital questionnaire study was employed. The questions were created using survey and reporting tools, allowing collection of data of how the participants trained and of their training structures. Afterwards, the amassed data was compiled and processed in a statistical analysis program. Results: The vast majority of the participants followed a push, pull, legs training routine and they trained on average 7-15 sets/muscle group per week. It was observed that participants performed at least 1 set to failure per exercise and furthermore many used intensifiers such as dropsets and supersets to induce increased muscle fatigue. Conclusions: The vast majority of the participants followed a push, pull, legs training routine and they trained on average 7-15 sets/muscle group per week. From a practical point of view, the findings regarding the different approaches employed by experienced strength trainers when it comes to hypertrophy training may serve as a guide for athletes and personal trainers and thus have direct practical application.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In the summer of 2020, the Swedish Ministry of Education presented a proposal for changes in upper secondary school sport education. In the proposal, it is highlighted that the number of sports schools and the number of student-athletes, has increased. It is argued that the increase has led to a decrease in quality of the student-athletes. Consequently, the Ministry of Education wants to establish one school sport system, hence reducing the number of athlete-students admitted, introduce supplementary selection criteria and exceptions to the main regulation on education free of charge. The main aim is to generate a clear, more transparent, and sustainable system for School sports in upper secondary education (Ministry of Education 2020, p. 5).

In this text, I reflect on the above-mentioned proposal and its possible implication for the selection of student-athletes. The article begins with an overview of the development of the Swedish school sports system, as well as an assessment of the proposals which highlight supplementary selection criteria and exceptions to the main regulation on free education. Further, I discuss definitions of elite level sports and investment in elite sport, the selection processes that occur in upper secondary elite sport schools and the student-athletes socio-economic backgrounds. In conclusion, it is emphasized that before the proposals become a reality, it is of importance to discuss the possible implications that they may entail.

"Som man sår får man skörda": En retrospektiv studie av två talangmiljöer inom svensk fotboll2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

From a retrospective perspective the purpose of this thesis was to study the talent identification and selection process in Swedish youth national teams and upper secondary school sports programmes. Particular focus was to identify age-related career patterns, and how it influence the transition rate to professional football. The thesis consists of two empirical part studies; (1) Upper secondary school sports programme and (2) Swedish youth national teams (U15-U21/U23). Birth data and career patterns of all players (1) (n=697) and (2) (n=1116) were traced and analysed. The relative age effect (RAE) were used as a theoretical framework. RAE refers to an asymmetry in the birth-date distribution, often favoring players born early in the selection year.

The results showed that RAE is a factor in selection of pupils in upper secondary school sports programme and youth national teams. It was found that the RAE was higher the younger age of the players and differences between girls and boys were found in all youth national teams (U16-U21/U23), with a higher effect of RAE in the boys’ teams. Regarding career patterns the result showed that an early career start (U15-U16) was most common and the length of the career were short, primary representing one out of six possible youth teams. Future elite football players occurred in all youth national teams, but the probability of reaching professional football increased if career starts were made in U16 or later for girls and U17 or later for boys. In the upper secondary school sports programme 15 % of the girls and 3 % of the boys became professional football players.

The high RAE, predominantly short careers and a high changeability of players between age groups in the youth national teams indicates that a short term strategy of selecting the temporary best players, foremost out of physical ability, is being uphold in the younger Swedish youth national teams and in upper secondary schools sports programme.

Sport schools in Europe: a scoping study of research articles (1999–2022)2023In: Sport in Society: Cultures, Media, Politics, Commerce, ISSN 1743-0437, E-ISSN 1743-0445, p. 1-21Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sport schools have increased in popularity over the past three decades, and research in the area has proliferated. This study presents an overview of sport school literature, by investigating peer-reviewed articles, summarising the findings of relevant articles, and identifying possible gaps in this research area. In total, 55 articles are included. The descriptive summary reports publication year, study location, research design, methods, theoretical perspectives, population, and sport(s) studied. The thematic overview comprises two primary sections – research about sport schools and research in sport schools. The former cover ‘outside’ perspectives, such as socio-political and educational policy issues while the latter cover ‘inside’ perspectives focusing on the actors – student athletes and coaches. In the discussion it is acknowledged that pedagogical perspectives in sport school literature are limited, that research on sport schools’ admissions processes is overlooked, and concerns raised as to if sport schools are or should be socially inclusive.
