    Abstract [en]

This studie explores how a promotive youth movement that aims to activate adolescents in economically and socially exposed areas, can affect the youth’s participation in society and oppose their experience of stigmatization. The youth movement, whom is being studied, uses urban art expressions as a mean to engage and motivate the adolescents. The empirism has mostly been collected by a limited participatory observation, and through qualitative interviews with staff and adolescents in the movement. The result has been analyzed through Pierre Bourdieus field theory. To summarise, field theory consists in the hypothesis that the individual is socialized in to his or her way of thinking and being (habitus), based on in which circumstances the individual is raised (in which field). Habitus affects the choices the individual makes throughout life. An individuals habitus is affected by three types of capital, which Bourdieu has named economical-, social-, and cultural capital. This essay analyzes how the promotive youth movement contributes to the adolescent’s social- and cultural capital. I have found that this largely happens by giving the adolescents different types of tools to be seen and heard, based on the concept of hip hop as a political instrument. The most prominent tool in the everyday activities is the opportunity to record music in a professional studio. Other tools that are used are the opportunity to host the movements own radio show, participate in the arranging of different types of events, and such. I have also found that the support from an extra adult and the connection within the movement are central providers of social capital.

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on a qualitative internet research about people with Asperger syndrome and their thoughts and opinions about the difficulties that occurs in the environment outside the home and their experiences of Internet. We have analyzed Internets social influences for those with Asperger syndrome, as a consequence of the difficulties that they meet in other environments. The constructed communities in the environment outside the home and the social interaction that occurs there is not adjusted for those with the diagnosis. This leads to difficulties to be there for those with Asperger syndrome. By doing a content analysis of the assembled data from a community site on the Internet, we found out that the environment on Internet is more comfortable for those with the diagnosis in several ways. A lot of people who earlier felt alone and excluded has thanks to the Internet been able to develop a healthy social life.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to analyse how Swedish courts reason about the child's best in custody and access disputes. We have assumed different themes to analyse our empirical data, these themes were the child's best interests, perspective on the child's best interests, child's perspective, children as subjects or objects and finally the right of the child or the child's best interests. Our empirical data have consisted of 15 City Court and Court of Appeal judgments of the Swedish courts handed down in 2015. The study had a qualitative disposition and the selection was made strategically to make sure the empirical data would be relevant to our issues. We have used a discourse analysis where the intention was to study how the court reason about the child’s interests and what statements that gets preference and what gets excluded in the assessment. Our theoretical starting point was extracted from Foucault’s theory about power and his discourse concept. We have used the concept of his theory in our analysis, but also extracted the theoretical concepts from previous research. The result shows that the Court's assessment of what is in the child’s best interest is based primarily on a professional and adult perspective on the child's situation. The individual child's perspective was excluded and the Court was principally talking about children's needs and interests in general. The result also showed that children were seen as objects and not as participants in the majority of the cases.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how former pupils in a daycareschool experienced there stay, in relation to the ordinary school. The method we used was an qualitative interview study with former pupils of a daycareschool. We have analyzed the result with help of Goffmans theory about stigma, Beckers labeling theory, Antonovskys SOC (a Sense Of Coherence) concept and Gjaerums theory of controlling. After analyzing the results we came to the conclution that the pupils where stigmatized and labeled as deviants in the ordinary school whilst in the daycareschool they got an enhanced SOC and a feeling of control. Due to the daycareschool’s work with these pupils they no longer sees as stigmatized and labeled.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to gain a deeper understanding of the administrative officials work with assessments in home studies of adoption. To answer the purpose, we chose to focus on the guidelines for administrative official’s assessments in home studies of adoption and what assessment areas that is fundamental to the administrative official’s assessments. The study is structured on the basis of a qualitative approach where we have used semi-structured interviews. We interviewed seven administrative officials in the social services which conducted home studies of adoption. The interviews were conducted in different municipalities in order to demonstrate that the result does not depend on local circumstances. We can however say that administrative officials in the various municipalities had close cooperation among themselves, which resulted in that the local factor could have some impact on the result. We have analysed the results based on theories of discretion and the street-level bureaucracy. We have in this study concluded that all administrative officials used the same guidelines and almost all of the administrative officials used the same investigation method. Even though all the administrative officials emanated from the same guidelines and though almost all of the seven administrative officials also used the same investigating method, we discovered in the results and analysis section that the implementation in home studies of adoption may differ between administrative officials in the various municipalities. We have interpreted this result as a consequence based on how each administrative official uses their discretion. Furthermore we found that the administrative officials did not think that there was one assessment area that was more important. There are a number of areas that are important to consider which depends on the applicant's background.

Fighting men`s violence against woman in the age of evidence and NPM2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Men's violence against women is a widespread global problem and a serious threat to women's health. This symposium will report from a study in Sweden that studies mechanisms that influence the design of interventions contesting domestic violence in two cities.

The symposiums three presentations will answer the following questions:

    1. Given the fact that the organizations face many different views and ideologies; how does this affect the ways the problem of domestic violence is represented?

    2. In what way affects ideas from performance measurement and new public management the interventions?

    3. In what way are the social services organizing towards an evidence-based practice in this field?

Presentation 1 Interpersonal violence-From policy to local practice

Presentation 2 Open Comparisons in social work

Presentation 3 Negotiating in risk assessment practices

    Abstract [sv]

Title: Disability policy program – a case study of a municipals implementation of UNs Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

    Supervisor: Marianne Westring-Nordh

    Assessor: Ulf Drugge

This study aims to examine how a small municipal in southern Sweden works with the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and examine the assistant officers knowledge about this work and user organizations inclusion and user involvement.

The study operates from a qualitative approach based on the results of nine semi-structured interviews with local politicians, assistance officers and representatives from three different user organizations.

The results show that the municipal has chosen to work with the implementation of the convention by creating policy programs for their departments through dialogue with user organizations, and by mapping the accessibility to public places. The results also show that the assistant officers have been given no information regarding the convention or the policy programs from their employers and instead operate from national legislations and prepositions. The user organizations feel that they were initially included in the process, but that their impact has later been removed due to structural reorganization.

"Det fungerar ju eftersom det inte är så många som ansöker"...: En kvalitativ studie om socialtjänstens stöd och insatser för spelberoende2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis describes and analyses in three substudies how home-based measures for children are expanding and why an open care idea are established as part of the Swedish child welfare. The first substudy describes the national increment of what today can be considered as a treatment policy – non-institutional care in child welfare. The results are analysed with Kingdon's agenda setting theory and shows that the factors of what Kingdon describes as problems-, politics- and policyflow influenced the national increment. Significant mechanisms have primarily been, the profession, the society's concerns for socially disadvantaged children, negative experiences of institutionalisation and a political position to deinstitutionalise all care. The second substudy focuses on how knowledge and research contributes to ideological, professional, and organizational change in child welfare by analysis of Research & Developments reports and articles from the professional journal Socionomen. Based on the neo-institutional concepts of organisational fields and isoformism the study's results shows that a consequence of adaptation strategies and "rationalized myths" are a number of similarities in how home-based measures are organized and which measures that are used. The third substudy, a case study, analyses how we can understand a local development of ideas in social services for children with concepts from neo institutional theory. Interviews and municipal documents are analysed and shows that the local translation of an open care idea is characterized by discretion, personal preferences and action and affects the choice of method and organization. The study also shows a political mistrust of institutional care while there is at the same time political confidence in the individual social worker's ability to find solutions that allow non-institutional measures to be an alternative to institutional care.

An overall conclusion of the thesis is that there is now a treatment policy in social services for the children, which involves extensive efforts at home and it has led to that more children receive support from social services. One result of non-institutional care increment is that it led to increased costs for municipalities for intervention for children and young people when out-of-home care has not decreased. Another general conclusion is that translation and adaptation of ideas to local contexts is something that generally fits street-level bureaucrats need for discretion.

    Abstract [en]

Title: Open-care Treatment of Youth. Home-ground Solutions in Theory and Practice

This dissertation is a case study in two parts, which describes how ideas about open-care treatment of youth aged 13-20 years are interpreted and concretized in a local context. The study, i.a., aims at creating deeper knowledge about target group, content of treatment, and reported results concerning a form of treatment in social care which has hitherto been sparsely researched in Sweden. The results of the interview study demonstrate that the driving forces for developing local forms of open care treatments have first and foremost been to offer better care and to improve the professionalism of the social worker. Studies of the social welfare documents of 97 young people reveal that most of these youngsters are in bad need of treatment and that they have experiences of various kinds of treatment before the present efforts. The study also demonstrates that the efforts are rarely evaluated and lack systematic documentation. Finally, the study reveals that more than 60 per cent of the youth get some sort of continuous support by the social welfare system after the open-care treatment has come to an end. The results from both parts of the study are analysed by means of neo- institutional theory. According to this theory the local open-care treatment consists of an indistinct target group, family-oriented methods, and activities that have been legitimised by strong proponents, good timing, professional development, and by representing important political values.

In conclusion, the author argues that open care treatment shows signs of a beginning institutionalisation, a taken-for-granted-ness, which he thinks is risky, as we still do not know if open-care treatment is more favourable to the young people than different kinds of 24-hour care. In addition, the author holds, that the future role of the social worker should include knowledge that decreases unfounded taken-for-granted ideas.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about job training for people with psycho-social problems without income. The purpose with this sort of job training is to bring these people back to the regular labor market as well as the experience of having a job. In the labor market situation in Sweden today there’s no guarantee that the individual will return to the labor market after having undergone job training. The aim of this study is to understand how supervisors at job training activities experience that the organizations of the activities and resources affect their work. We shall also explore how the supervisors assess if the structure of the activity weaken or enhance the job trainees’ social exclusion. Our research questions are:

    1. How are job training activities organized?

    2. How do the supervisors work with the job trainees’ social exclusion?

    3. How does the structure of the activity affect the supervisors’ discretion?

We have in this study done interviews with supervisors. To understand our result we have used Hasenfelds (1983; 2010) and Lipskys (2010) theories about human service organizations and the discretion of street level bureaucrats. The result shows that the job training activities are organized in different ways. The supervisors work with the social exclusion by creating routines in the every-day life, a social network and increased self-confidence for the job trainees. The result also shows that all the supervisors experience a great discretion in their work but that this discretion is affected by external factors.

    Abstract [en]

Swedish soccer is building for the future. In the three biggest cities in Sweden new soccer stadiums are being built. Approximately 2, 5 billion Swedish crowns are being invested for this cause. In Solna, Stockholm, the new national stadium will be built and it will be the new home for the Swedish national team. In Gothenburg Gamla Ullevi is demolished and makes way for a new central soccer stadium for the leading city clubs. And in Malmö, the club Malmö FF has

begun digging and they are waiting for their new stadium to be finished in 2009.

The goal with this thesis is to analyze the internal and external factors and se how they affect each other and stadium development.

New stadiums create new opportunities for Swedish soccer. The new infrastructure gives soccer a whole new spectrum of possibilities. The new stadiums are off course an important element

but other factors play their part, such as the following internal and external factors. These political, economical, social and technological issues have affects on future development and power of sway resulting in new ways of attracting people. Interactions between these factors are therefore essential when investigating correlations between local authorities, spectators, clubs and local businesses. Working for an attractive, more entertaining and safer soccer experience has begun.

    Abstract [en]

Background: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of deliberate self-harm in a Swedish University population.

Method: A random sample of first year students at University of Kalmar was invited to participate in an Internet-based survey in the autumn of 2007. A total of 139 (53,1 %) completed the anonymous survey.

Results: The results showed that 25,2 % (n=35) of the students reported having engaged in some kind of deliberate self-harm at least once, and deliberate self-harm was endorsed by 7,9 % within the past year. The most frequently procedures to self-harm were to tear, carve or pinch self, cutting skin and hitting self on purpose. 37,1 % reported that they had told no one about their self-injurious behaviors and 36,4 % significantly reported that they had no one they trusted and who they could talk to if they were concerned about something. Students with self-injurious behavior were also more likely to report a history of emotional, sexual and/or physical abuse, alcohol and drug use, cut classes and questioning their sexual orientation.

Conclusions: Findings suggest that self-harm is associated with risk factors and that self-injury is not only associated with adolescence but also with adulthood. It is therefore important to continue studies in both populations.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how family law caseworkers in Sweden handle the mediation process in child custody disputes. Three themes were emphasized: the child’s best interest, strategies to maintain the child’s best interest and family conflicts and high-conflict families. To get an understanding of how these themes relate to child custody disputes, I conducted semi-structured interviews with family law caseworkers, since working with custody cases is part of their daily work. I chose a qualitative method because I was striving for diverse and comprehensive responses about family caseworkers’ practical experience in dealing with custody disputes. When asked about the definition of the child’s best interest, all respondents agreed that it is an open concept, implying that the definition depends on the specific circumstances surrounding the case. Generally, the respondents were of the opinion that the child’s best interest is synonymous with joint custody. The respondents stated that they employ different strategies to ensure that the child’s best interest is maintained, which is a result of their relatively high discretion. They stressed that while their primary focus is on dialogue with the parents, they use child testimonies as an additional guidance when determining what constitutes the child’s best in the case at hand. However, they also pointed out that a child’s wishes do not always coincide with the child’s best interest. When it comes to high-conflict families, the respondents concluded that the term has not been established in practice, although the problems associated with such families were recognized. After I presented the formal definition outlined in American research, the respondents agreed that the definition is useful in practice.

    Abstract [en]

The concept of the work-first principle (arbetslinjen) might be considered old, but still serves as the main principle as well as an instrument in the Swedish labour market and social policy today. The original idea was that work and willingness to work was to be rewarded, especially due to a common opposition against the passive receipt of grants. The general definition of work, today, is that it is something desirable that should be achieved and that unemployed primarily will be offered training or work rather than grants and subsidies. When the Moderate party re-launched themselves as Sweden's "workers' party of today", in the beginning of the 2000's, the concept was brought back into the spotlight. In the elections of 2006 and 2010, the labour market was widely debated and become a controversial issue, with the concept of the work-first principle playing a major role.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse and problematize how the concept was presented and explained in the nationwide newspapers Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet during the 2010 elections, this in order to increase the understanding of the concept’s contemporary definition and policy implications. This was done by analysing news articles, including articles from the debate and cultural sections, as well as editorials in afore mentioned newspapers, through a discourse analytical approach using the conceptual and analytical tools from both the discourse theory and the critical discourse analysis. The result of this thesis shows that the discourse is not primarily a matter of the work-first principle’s existence or nonexistence but rather how it should be defined and what to include. Other main result was that the common definition of the work-first principle and its content, during the election of 2010 (1 January - 19 September), was closely connected to the policy of the, ruling Alliance Government.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative interview study, of how social workers´ used their discretion and knowledge when they consider placements of children and youths in out-of-home-care. In our study we wanted to answer these questions. The first question we wanted to answer was how social workers´ describe their discretion in placement considerations. The second question was how social workers´ use knowledge in these judgments. The study's respondents were social workers´ who have worked or still working with children in out-of-home-care. Based on what our interviewees told, we came to the conclusion that social workers´ judgments’ are subject to several factors. These factors included lack of resources, legislation and supervision of management. However, the study revealed that social workers´ did not use research. Instead they used their own experiences, the clients´ actual situation and colleagues´ experiences as sources of knowledge. Social workers´ did not mention their discretion, but pointed out the limitations they had in performing the work. Their answers indicated that they did not want to be responsible in these difficult judgments and therefore they used their colleagues´ and the management.

IMMIGRANTS’ INTEGRATION IN SWEDEN: Swedish young adults’ perceptions and attitudes2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Integration of immigrants is an interactive process of learning a new culture, an obtaining of rights, access to a position and status and building of personal relations between migrants and the receiving society.  Their ability to reciprocally adjust to intercultural encounters is one of the most important factors of successful integration.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate Swedish young adults perception and attitudes towards immigrants and immigrants’ integration into the Swedish society. Furthermore the aim is to study their perception of social interaction of immigrants and the Swedish host society. How Swedish young adults perceive their country’s immigration policy.

Method:  A qualitative research, using an online open-ended questionnaire and in-depth telephone interviews were applied to collect the data about Swedish young adults perceptions and attitudes. The transcribed data were subjected to thematic analysis.

Result:  The results of the qualitative research helped to understand Swedish young adults perceptions and attitudes. The findings showed that two of the biggest reasons that Swedish young adults support immigration are: humanitarism and labor force. Swedish young adults are very aware of immigrants’ integration in Sweden. They socialize with immigrants and have contact with them in daily basis. Swedish young adults, have a negative opinion regarding Sweden’s immigration policy

Conclusion: Swedish young adults define immigrants as a people born in one country but move to another (particularly in Sweden) with an intention to reside there permanently. Regarding their acculturation expectations, they support integration as the best acculturation strategy. They think that immigrants in Sweden are “half way” integrated, geographically segregated, discriminated, prejudiced in different degrees and immigrant woman are the most excluded category.

    Abstract [en]

In our paper we chose to study care management in the old age care. According to the law for the social services the needs of elderly should govern the assistance they are granted. But research has shown that municipal guidelines govern the assistance and that the elderly have to adjust their needs to them. Thus there is a discrepancy between law and practice. The aim of this study was to understand how care managers relate to municipal guidelines, laws and the requests of elderly when the application for assistance is established. We wanted to understand what strategies they use to deal with situations when the aforementioned factors are not consistent. The theoretical approaches we chose were Lipsky’s theory of street-level bureaucrats. The method we used was qualitative and consisted of six informal interviews made with care managers in the municipality of Växjö, Sweden. Based on our interviews we identified eight different themes: the availability of resources, directing conversations and the use of routines, legitimize decisions, legitimize through the possibility of entering an appeal, legitimize through constructing the client, the adaptation of the objectives to the possibilities to perform them, diminishing their capability and professionalism. Our conclusion was that the requests of elderly did govern their assistance, as long as they coincided with the municipal guidelines. If the requests fell outside the guidelines it often required medical or social reasons for granting them. The municipal guidelines were never abandoned to create a uniquely designed assistance.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how social workers deal with honour-related violence, with special focus on the processing from sheltered housing. Our qualitative interviews with social workers that work with this kind of problems show that there are both obstacles and opportunities in the processing from sheltered housing. On the negative side are the loneliness, the shame and the guilt that the girls may experience when they need to leave their families. The social services can both be an obstacles and an opportunity. When the girls need to create a new life in a new city they have a lot of opportunities and in the same time it is hard to get to know new friends when you don´t know the city or have much money. The culture in Sweden and the Swedish norms are governing in an unproblematic way according to the social workers. They also think the girls need to deal with two different macro systems, the culture that the family comes from and the culture in Sweden. To help the girls in this situation requires much energy, time and labour. The professionals think these girls are dreaming about a normal life, but the girls must learn to protect themselves for the rest of their lives. This means that they never will be able to tell anyone the whole story of their background.

    Abstract [en]

I have done a research about how youth councill in Olofströms rural district work in practice and if this conduce to the rural districts work of democracy. My intention is to examine how the youth councill has workt, how it was build up and why did the rural district decide to start a youth councill in Olofström. Did the intentions agree with how the youth councill worked in reality? The choice of subject is to look at how the local democracy work is working in reality. The youth councill is an example on that.

My methods are interviews with politicians in the rural district and close reading of the rural districts minutes and decisions about youth councill and the youth councills bills between 2001 and 2006. The study gives a chronological illustration over which questions were young people interested of during the period. I have come to the conclusion that the youth councill works relative well but not every politician thinks so as it come out of the interwiews. The youth councill has consolidated the democracy work in some extension.

Inter-rater reliability – a reliable measure for standardised: A case study on the DOK interview2007In: Nordisk alkohol- & narkotikatidskrift, ISSN 1455-0725, Vol. 24, no 1, 45-58 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Inter-rater reliability studies are unusual as regards the standardised interview instruments used in the Swedish treatment care system for substance abusers. This article presents the results of a study intended to establish the inter-rater reliability of DOK interviews, through identification of question areas and items with high or low correspondence, and through analysis of how ratings differ between different interviewers.

In total 41 practitioners participated in this study, with various experiences and from six different treatment units of the Swedish treatment care system for substance abusers. Participants gave their ratings and completed the DOK questionnaire based on a video-taped interview. Calculation and analysis of the correspondences were carried out for each individual question area and also each individual item by using appropriate statistical methods. Differences between the various assessors are presented.

The results of the study show that the percentage agreement for the question areas and the items is generally high, with the exception of a few isolated questions.

Among the many possible different explanations for a lack of correspondence is that the questions could be ambiguously constructed and defined or the interview guidelines do not offer satisfactory guidance, or some questions could be too detailed. In addition, a few of the raters may lack sufficient training or experience when it comes to conducting interviews based on DOK. The combined results of the study show that there is a high level of inter-rater reliability, which indicates that in practice it is possible to utilise structured interviews such as DOK.

    Abstract [en]

Anderberg, Mats & Dahlberg, Mikael (2009). Strukturerade intervjuer inom missbruksvården – som en grund för kunskapsutveckling (Structured interviews in substance abuse treatment - as a foundation for the development of knowledge).

In the discussion on knowledge development in social work, structured interviews have attracted an increasing amount of attention. The aim of this thesis is to examine and analyze how structured interviews can serve as a basis in the compilation and development of knowledge for practice and research in addiction treatment. More precisely, it means a problematization of the methodological issues that are of central importance in studying treatment outcomes, in which structured interviews form the basis. The methodological aspects in focus here are scientific concepts such as reliability, validity and specific factors in the evaluation of treatment interventions. A further objective is to outline a model for analysis when compiling and evaluating treatment outcome.

The five empirical studies have been conducted in their natural context, in organisations in which structured interviews with clients are carried out as an everyday routine and used for e.g. treatment planning. The structured interview DOK (a Swedish abbreviation for Documentation of clients) is used as a basis and an example for the empirical studies in this thesis.

The validation studies show that the DOK interview generally attains a good level of reliability and validity, but also contains a small number of variables that do not live up to the requirements which may be imposed. Deficiencies in operationalization and question construction seem to have a large impact. Another conclusion is that it is possible to carry out validation studies, where each variable is examined separately and evaluated with the aid of both sound methodological starting points and relevant statistical theory. Another of the central questions, the thesis addresses, is how structured interviews can be used as a basis for evaluation of treatment. The two studies which highlight this issue show that it is obvious that structured interviews are suitable for such a purpose, through its standardized form and multi-dimensional nature.

Validation of structured interviews or evaluation of social interventions should not be reduced to single numbers or values. The multidimensional nature of the structured interview shall also be reflected in the results and analysis. The thesis presents an analysis model for evaluating treatment outcome in relation to two empirical examples and foregoing theoretical starting points. Our view is that structured interviews can provide a link between practice and research and thus contribute to the development of knowledge in social work and substance abuse treatment.

    Abstract [en]

This essay shows how administrators in two different organizations are experiencing freedom of action in their work situation. The essay is made based on a qualitative method and interviews were used to implement the study. People chosen for this study are four administrators at a governmentagency - the Social Insurance agency, and four municipal officers from different Social service offices in southern Sweden. The theoretical framework consists of Weber's theory of bureaucracy, and his discussion of the legal authority. The analysis is designed as adiscussion of the parts that were especially prominent during the interviews. These parts were, for example, professional role, controland cooperation. The results show the complicated relationship that emerges when discussing the concept ofdiscretion. The experience of a wide discretion generally indicatesthe opposite, namely that it is regulated in different ways. The main reason for this appears to be extensive control functions andorganizational impact.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the occurence of norms in court cases regarding the Swedish law of support and service for disabled (Lag 1993:387 om stöd och service till vissa funktionshindrade) with the help of a discourse analysis method. More specifically its aim was to examine and identify norms in the different dictums/statements that were to be found in the court cases regarding the supportive institution "contact person" according to the Swedish law "LSS" with the help of a norm science approach. The aim was also to examine when the applicant was found to be entitled to a contact person according to the LSS-law. To be able to do this, the author studied thirty-four different court cases. In these cases six themes were found, that indicated the occurence of norms. The conclusion was that there were indeed norms occurring in the court cases, due to a normative legislation and therefore the interpretations of the legislation also become normative, but also due to the fact that judges and social workers incorporate their own internalized societal norms in their judgements.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to explore opportunities for unaccompanied minors to be integrated and participate in society through youth centres and football clubs. This is done by analysing how the leader in recreational activities and sports clubs look to their function as an integration tool for unaccompanied young people. The study was based on a qualitative approach and empirical data collection was done by semi-structured interviews. We have interviewed a total of six people, three are working on municipal youth centres and three people working in football clubs. When the empirical evidence was gathered, we found two main themes integration with under themes influence and rights and obligations and opportunities and difficulties with the under theme the collaboration.  The study's results have been analysed in the light of previous research, as well as the theoretical concepts of civil society, integration and empowerment.

The result shows that youth centres and football clubs work with integration issues and that it is important to create a climate where young people can sense fellowship. Mainly on youth centres language was a barrier which sometimes could complicate the process of integration. In football clubs had the youth not always the language skills but the leaders stated that when language was not there other young people could help to translate and explain. Leaders in football clubs specified all the young people who train and play with them had difficult to take place in the established clubs and they saw problems with the integration when established clubs would not or could not accommodate all who want to participate in the club. However, they believed that young people could start in their team and later move on to the second, which they also help young people to do.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is that from a gender perspective, highlighting how investigating social workers assess and justify the decisions concerning youth with socially destructive behavior. The focus is on the similarities and differences constructed. In order to respond to our study, we interviewed six social workers in six municipalities who work with youth investigations. The interviews took place in the southern and central Sweden. Parallell to the interviews, we used a vignette that we designed and constructed ourselves. It contains a fictitious case of a youth with socially destructive behavior. Half of the interviewees had to answer the case where the youth had a girl's name and the other half in which the adolescent had a boy's name. Selected theories that have been used to create an understanding of our research problem is the gender system and professional ethics. The results of our empirical data gave us several conclusions. The outcomes of this study shows that social workers holds a gender awareness when working with investigations of teenaged boys and girls. However the results also show the complexity that exists in regard to possess a conscious approach to the gender impact of youth investigations among social workers. It appears that the social workers seem to react and act slightly different depending on whether the youth is a boy or a girl. Furthermore, the results indicate that the heavy workload affect the social workers investigative work and in turn the young people. Interesting findings were also the social workers descriptions of the importance of school's role in getting the girls and boys gone wrong to return to a healthy path in life.

Title: Now I took his child, what will he do with mine?”

A qualitative study on threat and violence aimed at social workers within child protective service.

Authors:  Emma Andersson and Torbjörn Sjölin.

    Supervisor:  Peter Hultgren.

    Assessor: Barzoo Eliassi.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how social workers within child protective service understand and experience threat and violence aimed at them in their profession and how these understandings and experiences affects their well-being. The study will provide an understanding of the subject at hand and can also lead way for new research areas of how to improve the well-being of social workers within this field.

Method: A qualitative approach based on semistructured interviews has been used as method in this study. To collect empirical material seven currently working social workers from three different municipalities in the same region were interviewed.

Theory: The theoretical points of this thesis has been Berger and Luckmanns theories about social construction, theory of social cognition and a model produced in the writing of how interaction between experience and understanding affects the well-being. The different theories and approaches has been a valuable tool to analyze the empirical material gathered in the study.

Results: The result of this study is divided in different themes based on the purpose of the study. Our results indicate that social worker within child protective service consider

threat and violence as occurring within their profession and that this perception has a negative impact on their well-being. Even though social workers consider threat and violence as not acceptable at work and perceive threat as a part of their job they continue to fulfill their obligations at work. The main explanation, found in this study, is that they consider the well-being of children as higher valued than their own.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how social workers perceive and understand violence and threats of violence from clients, and how it effect their working environment. It seems that the respondents understand the violence and threats of violence from clients as a result of the clients background problems, vulnerability, dependency and from “the reason" that the client is currently in the contact with the organization. How respondents interpret the client´s behaviour based on the above-mentioned factors, seem to determine how the respondents perceive and define the violence and threats of violence by clients directed against them. Interestingly enough, although all respondents in the study experienced violence and threats of violence from clients, none of them perceived themselves as exposed at work. The answer to this is consensual. The respondents argue that they “knew what they got into" and thus violence and threats of violence from clients can be considered as part of the work, that the social workers must be aware of in order to work within the organization.

A further aim of this study was to examine how the social workers views the matter of who’s responsible for the threats and violent incidents and how to "best" encounter the violence and threats of violence within the organization. The respondents argue that it is when the social workers communicate in a wrong way, use their power or give "bad decisions" to the clients that most threats and violent incidents occur. The role that the respondents construct for themselves can be understood as they need to ,in their professional role "withstand a little bit" of violence and threats of violence from clients. The respondents then becomes mainly responsible for the threats and violent incidents, because they communicated in a wrong way, used the "unnecessary" exercise of power, or gave "bad decisions" to clients. The clients responsibility is then reduced due to the fact that the client merely reacts to how the respondent acted towards the client. The key element in the prevention of violence and threats of violence seems to be the way the respondents builds relations to the client. However, it also appears that the respondents expect a certain amount of violence and threats of violence from clients. Violence and threats of violence therefore run the risk of becoming something that the respondents get used to and sometimes expect, and something that they to some extent can protect themselves from, but never fully avoid or prevent.

    Abstract [en]

The drug treatment staff attitude towards needle exchange is what investigates in this study. The aim of this study is to see what’s affecting the standpoints in the needle exchange issue and also to investigate if the needle exchange is compatible with Swedish drug policy. The study has a qualitative approach and it’s based on eight semi-structured interviews with drug treatment staff. To analyze the empirical material we’ve used Berger and Luckmanns social construction theory, the theoretical concept profession socialization and the four ethical principles: autonomy principle, goodness maximization principle, harm minimization principle and the principle of justice.

The result of this study shows that drug treatment staffs are negative to needle exchange efficacy. They don’t believe that needle exchange is compatible with Swedish drug policy which strives for a drug free society. The drug treatment staffs are worried about that harm reduction interventions, such as needle exchange, will lead to a liberalized drug policy and that drug use will be legitimized. They fear that the drug policy will be weakened with harm reduction. The results illustrate that there are numerous factors that influence staff attitudes towards needle exchange, these are profession socialization, workplace, organization, context, the current drug policy as well as knowledgeable of the needle exchange.

Keywords: Needle exchange, Injection drug users, Drug treatment staff, Harm reduction and Swedish drug policy.

    Abstract [en]

Youth culture and social problems associated with youth groups have existed for decades. We have chosen an explorative case study design to highlight young people's revolt against parents and society and how society has dealt with social problems of youth and how those were perceived. “Raggare” were considered a major social problem in society. The material in the study comes from eight qualitative interviews and literature of previous research of the current youth culture. The material also comes from a document study, which shows the social problems in connection with the youth cultures celebration of the midsummer festival in Öland. We have analyzed and clarified the image of “Raggare” past and present and found mechanisms that changed the “Raggare” culture from being a major social problem to the accepted as a pastime today. Our theoretical framework builds on previous research of the current youth culture, subcultures, deviant, symbols and symbolic interaktionism. We assume that theorist Zygmunt Baumans discussion of "we" and "them", Stanley Cohens term "moral panic" and Erving Goffmans dramaturgical perspective reflect our study in an informative approach.

Manliga förebilder inom socialt arbete: föreställningar, praktik och organisation2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Among those who graduate from the various schools of Social work in Sweden are a great majority women. At the same time men are sought after in the work field.  But not just to level up the equality between the sexes, but also to fill a gender specific niche to counter up a need for male role models. But a closer look at this need and the types of functions set to cater for it shows that male role models as a concept vary between contexts. In this study we examine the concepts and the practices of male role models in three different settings: a municipal social care center offering young boys male bonding activities; a non-profit organization warding young people from drug abuse and criminal behavior; and last, a long term residential home for young boys between the ages 13 and 19. Our research shows that the concept of the male role model vary between the organizations and less so within. By the means of semi-structured interviews we examine representatives from the three organizations and their both personal and professional views on what a male role model is. By using a social-constructionistic frame work to understand and interpret our data we conclude that the concept of a male role model is used out of different ideas of manliness; either a man who transcends gender stereotypes, or a man who manifests them – a fact that per se contests the idea of gender as innate. How these come to vary is a question of the conditions of the organization when it comes to the relationship between professional and client of either being conditioned by official constraints or personal closeness. But the pivotal factor to understand the variations is the gender mix. The organizations representing a stereotypical concept of manliness are almost exclusively of one sex, while the other hold equal amounts of women and men. To transcend the barrier of gender stereotypes it is necessary to share experience of both sexes for creating awareness of sameness, instead of claiming difference. This can also help give the young male client an alternative approach to an adult male identity beyond his socially given horizon.

"Man gör ju vad man kan för varandra": Makars roll i en parrelation med en demenssjuk partner2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore spouses' roles in a relationship with a partner with dementia and to understand spouses' situations at home. The study was focusing on gender roles and authority in relationships between the spousal caregivers and their partners with dementia. The method used for this study was qualitative content analysis and the data was collected from seven interviews with spousal caregivers about their roles as partners of people with dementia. By critically examining Twiggs three models, carers as resources, caregivers as co-workers and carers as co-clients, we have been able to visualize how spouses can look upon their role to their partners with dementia. A fourth model has been added to a modification of Twiggs models, because spouse's roles didn't fit into any of Twiggs already existing models. There is not a big gender difference about spousal care for a partner, and the caregivers are in a highly extent affected of the situation with a partner with dementia. Spouses role can fit in with partners as carers, which is a fourth model added to Twiggs original three models.

PÅ NÅGOT VIS SÅ ÄR DET NÅGOT SJÄLVISKT: En studie om drivkrafter till frivilligt engagemang i Svenska Röda Korsets fadderverksamhet för nyinvandrade2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A considerable number young of students are suffering from sociopsychological complaints. The psychological complaints emerge from differnt sources. Important factors for psychological well being are experiences of a satisfactory social network, efficient coping strategies and a supportive school climate.

The aim of this study was to examine how young girls in the age of 16-18 years old experience and cope with demands from school. To fulfill the aim of this study we have five questions: What do the girls apprehend as a satisfactory/unsatisfactory working environment? How do the girls define stress? How do the girls cope with stress? What importance has leisure time? What importance has the social network?

The method we used for this study was qualitative and the material was collected through four focus groups. Fourteen girls were interviewed from four different school classes with different profiles. The theoretical framework used to analyze the findings consisted of the demand-control-model created by Karasek & Theorell, Antonovsky’s KASAM theory and Selyes GAS-theory.

Stress expressed by the girls in this study is described as an unbalance between workload and available time. The analysis shows that most of the girls in the study experience school as a demanding setting that create strain. Furthermore, the results indicate that experienced demands not only originate from school but also from the girls themselves and by comparison with classmates. A satisfactory school environment is described as possibilities to influence the school work and the structrue of courses. Also a good relationship with teachers as well as classmates where pointed out as important factors. Strategies the girls use to cope with stress and demands are structuration, priority and planning. Some of the girls also think that a positive attitude towards life, regular eating and sleeping are important factors in coping with stress.

All the girls describs leisure time as significant.  Most girls practice sport activites but activities as playing instrument, watching movies and spending time with peers is also mentioned. All of the girls find their leisure time as of importance for them to relax and revive from the strain caused by school. However, some girls find it hard to fully relax during leisure activites and also think that time for leisure is too limited.

The social network is aslo seen as an important instrument in coping with strain. Most of the girls in this study do talk to family or friends in times of hardship.

ADHD-problematik på behandlingshem: En kvalitativ studie om hur socialarbetare identifierar, behandlar och bemöter brukare med ADHD-problematik på behandlingshem 2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim with this study was to get an understanding of how social workers on treatment centers where substance abuse occur identify ADHD among the patients and how the social workers in their daily work treat and meet patients with ADHD. The study was based on eight interviews with social workers on three different treatment centers in Sweden. The result has been analyzed with a content analysis. The theories used in this study are Howard Becker’s labeling theory and equifinality and multifinality, which derive from the systems theory.

The result of the study was that the social workers do not identify ADHD among their patients, but they adjust the treatment after what needs the individual patient have. These needs are for instance need of security and predictability. These needs are being considered in the treatment in the daily work since the social workers use a treatment that consists of structure, routines and schedules. This treatment is used on every patient and is not adjusted whether a diagnosis exists or not. How the social workers meet the patients can however be different for patients with ADHD since the social workers find clearness, alliance and trust as important in the meeting with these patients. This can however differ depending on what the social workers focus on in the treatment. The social workers on one of the treatment centers focus on the substance abuse, the social workers on another treatment center focus on the disability and in one treatment center both of these are in focus.

Bedömningen av "lämpliga" familjehem i Sverige och Australien.: En jämförande studie.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is about the assessment of foster care families and what´s considered a suitable foster care home. It is a comparative study between two welfare countries, Sweden and Australia. The study aims to increase the understanding of social workers assessment on foster care families and examines what a suitable foster care home looks like for a few social workers in each country. The study was carried out through five qualitative interviews, three of them in Sweden and two of them in Australia. With a social constructivist theory the result was carried out and analysed. The result of the study shows differences in the way social workers in each country talk about the suitability of a foster carer. In Australia the social workers that participated in the study spoke about a suitable foster family as a family that is safe and can provide a safe environment. In Sweden the social workers spoke about a suitable family as a secure and stable family. The result of the study also shows similarities between the two countries, as an example the nuclear family is still the norm and other family structures are exceptions of the norm.

Vårdnadsöverflyttning: Några socialsekreterares syn på bestämmelsen i Föräldrabalkens 6 kap 8 §2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

(3) What is done in order to facilitate the needs that are added when persons with disabilities chooses to become parents? we consider that they have been responded to.

Through our empirical materials we can interpret and read out the replies that we searched for in connection with our survey. It has shown how persons in authority that is active within social service and LSS goes about when they meet persons with disabilities that want to form family. The procedure sees differently out depending on which disability the client in question has.

Title:“My first thought is a girl that cuts herself” – A qualitative study about professionals in human service organizations description of self-injurious behavior.

    Supervisor: Ann Ottengrim

    Assessor: Rickard Ulmestig

    The purpose of this study has been to understand how professionals in human service organizations (HSO) describe self-injuries behaviour, how they describe the individuals that self-harm and if the professionals describe any possible differences in how men and women self-harm as well as how professional’s knowledge concerning self-injurious behaviour is contructed. The study answers three questions;

    - What kind of actions do professionals in HSO describe as being self-injurious behaviour?

    - How is knowledge constructed by professionals in HSO concerning self-injurious behaviour?

    - How are people who engage in self-injurious behaviour being described?

    - How do professionals in human service organizations describe potential differences between men and women´s self-injurious behaviour?

Qualitative interviews have been chosen as the method in this study to gather empirical data and the social constructionism theory has been implemented to analyse the empirical data.

The result of this study shows that self-injurious behaviour is a complex and at the same time a dynamic phenomenon. There are a lot of different actions that are being describes as being self-injurious behaviour. An individual that cuts its own body tissue or an individual that often gets involved in psychical fights are examples of acts that are being described as having a self-injurious behaviour. The informants also described that their knowledge and what they define as self-injurious behaviour has changed over time in the field which indicates that self-injurious behaviour is a dynamic category. According to our results it doesn’t seem to exist a stereotype of whom and why someone engages in self-harm. But men tend to self-harm in a more severe way than women.
