Specialundervisning, identitet och stigma: En kvalitativ studie inriktad på gymnasieelever med specialundervisning gällande deras skolsituation2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Relationen mellan vårdaren och vårdtagaren inom rättspsykiatrin2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purposes of this essay are to examine how employees in a psychiatric ward experience the relationships between them and the caretakers, and to study the different aspects of relationships between them. For instance the power relation and the friend relation.

The essay is based on a qualitative method with semi structured interviews from 9 employees, whom are nurses and caregivers at a ward in Växjö psychiatric institution.

The results from this study illuminate that the relationship between caregivers and caretakers is a vital aspect of the care itself. And that this relationship is the foundation for caregiver to be able to offer necessary care. A good relationship between caregiver and caretaker is characterized by the abilities of the caregiver to create trust and confidence in their relationship to the caretaker, as well as supporting and satisfying the caretakers’ needs by help of their relationship.

This study highlights the issues in the relationship between caregivers and caretakers as well as the risk that pertain to this relationship.

The results indicate that certain power exertions overt and covert are factors in some relationships. These power exertion are, however, hard to define, the caregivers also seem partly unaware of them.

"Ur djupet" från Linnéuniversitetet i Växjö: En socialpsykologisk studie av en psykosocial arbetsplatsmiljö under tre decennier2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to see how board games and board game clubs can be part of the creation of social meaning for a younger generation, and how board games can be a part of social work. The study is based on interviews with 3 representatives from Sverok, which is the Swedish gaming federation; Gothcon, Sweden's oldest board game convention, and Calmare Spelsällskap (CSS); a board game club in the small town of Kalmar, Sweden. Interviews have also been conducted with four active youths in CSS. These seven interviews are analyzed with theories about Belonging, Social psychology and Civil society

This study shows that board games have a positive effect as a tool to gather people with similar interests. When these people gather in board game clubs they form a kind of belonging that can help with certain issues, such as social problems. The reason why board game clubs are special is because the activity they are a part of is open to everyone, and all kinds of people are welcome and not only the ones who are good at board games. We also reached the conclusion that board games can be a part of social work, both professionally and non-professionally. This is because board games and their clubs is a part of civil society, which is a complement to social work

Patienten och ronden.: Socialpsykologisk analys av ronden.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Othering the “other” in court: Threats to self-presentation during interpreter assisted hearings2014In: International Journal of Law, Language & Discourse, ISSN 1839-8308, Vol. 4, no 1, p. 27-68Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is based on an ethnographic research project studying interaction processes and rituals; the interplay between speech and social interaction during interpreted hearings in Swedish District Court cases on domestic violence, where opponents have Middle Eastern, Muslim backgrounds. It is argued that a combination of linguistic changes performed by an interpreter – subtractions, additions and content alterations – during interpreted hearings can cause situations of emotional drainage and contagion, leading to further ”othering” of parties that already are culturally and linguistically ”othered”, both inside and outside the courtroom context. Ultimately, their loss of control over self-presentation is a matter of unequal power distribution and a potential threat to the principle of legal security. Thus, the view of the interpreter as merely a context-bound supportive drummer at the back of the orchestra is challenged and related to social order and stratification processes on an abstract societal level.

Immigrant mafia or local lads on the binge?: The construction of (un)trustworthiness in Swedish district courts2017In: Retfærd. Nordisk Juridisk Tidsskrift, ISSN 0105-1121, Vol. 157, no 3-4, p. 182-200Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we address the constructionof familiarity and distance in Swedish district courtcases, involving young men with both immigrantand Swedish backgrounds. Through ethnographicobservations of 40 trials related to street crimes, wehave found different qualities of social interaction that distinguish immigrant background and Swed-ish background cases from each other. These distinc-tions, disfavouring young men with immigrant back-ground, are built up through a series of practices and events that follow taken-for-granted behaviourand details in interaction, such as speech, laughter, choice of words to describe the accused and trust inSwedish witnesses. In conclusion, we argue for thenecessity of detailed, close-up studies of courtroom action and interaction to understand statistical find-ings of discrimination and disfavouring of certain groups of immigrants in court and elsewhere in thejudicial process.

Ack Värmeland, du sköna: Före detta Jehovas vittnen berättar, om deras väg fram till avhopp, och livet efter2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Does risk communication really decrease cooperation in climate change mitigation?2018In: Climatic Change, ISSN 0165-0009, E-ISSN 1573-1480, Vol. 149, no 2, p. 147-158Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Effective communication of risks involved in the climate change discussion is crucial and despite ambitious protection policies, the possibility of irreversible consequences actually occurring can only be diminished but never ruled out completely. We present a laboratory experiment that studies how residual risk of failure of climate change policies affects willingness to contribute to such policies. Despite prevailing views on people's risk aversion, we found that contributions were higher at least in the final part of treatments including a residual risk. We interpret this as the product of a psychological process where residual risk puts participants into an "alarm mode," keeping their contributions high. We discuss the broad practical implications this might have on the real-world communication of climate change.

    Abstract [sv]

Complexity and Ambivalence in Ship Safety Inspection: The view of Swedish Port state control officers2015Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Despite an extensive system of Port state controls (PSC) on ships, inspection loopholes in European control functions have been reported. Furthermore, risk factors associated with fatigue, stress and a poorly developed safety culture on board ships have been identified in earlier research. These combined risk factors may pose a serious threat to maritime safety.

With this as a point of departure, this thesis aims to investigate the perceived work situation for Swedish inspectors from an inspector’s point of view concerning professional challenges, status and identity for inspectors and the perceived quality of Paris MoU inspection system and the Swedish inspection organization.

In this study, the activities of Swedish PSC inspectors are viewed as a profession and the inspectors are viewed as bureaucrats. One of the principals for bureaucracy is that its servants should exercise their authority according to the common good, be autonomous, rational, reliable and responsible. The results indicate that organizational and management reforms have put the PSC bureaucrat under pressure to become more market oriented. Due to the responsibilities inherent in the profession of inspector within the complex structure of shipping, these organizational and management reforms conflict with the PSC inspector’s autonomy and professional role.

Inspectors perceive that their expertise and integrity are vital for the success of their work. They also consider the high degree of control that the Swedish inspection organization exercises on the inspectors’ work as limiting to their autonomy and ability to make professional decisions. Some level of control may fulfil a need of support from the Swedish inspection organization, but too much control hampers the professional self-sufficiency and freedom of action. The inspectors in this study reveal considerable ambivalence towards the quality and complexity of ship safety inspections carried out in Sweden and within the Paris MoU system.

Japanska utbytesstudenter: en netnografisk studie om deras sociala liv på ett svenskt universitet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Globalization and social interaction between countries are two current topics in today’s research. A shown interest in exchange studies among students all over the world is one of the positive outcomes of globalization and the social interactions that comes with it. This essay examines how a group of Japanese exchange students studying at a university in Sweden experience their social meetings with the local Swedish students and fellow Japanese exchange students. A netnographic method was applied to interview the informants online, 12 synchronous interviews were thus carried out to better understand the experiences of the Japanese exchange students. To better understand the relations that occur between the informants and the Swedish students, and the relations that occur with fellow Japanese students, the theory of “the Established and the Outsiders” by Norbert Elias and John L. Scotson (2010) is applied. This theory examines the relationship that takes place between a group that is new and has a low sense of community, and a group that is established and has a high sense of community. This study shows that the Japanese exchange students have a positive attitude when it comes to getting to know Swedish students. The X-program and also the mix of local students and exchange students in classes contributes to create a social platform for the Japanese exchange students. This study also shows that the group of Japanese exchange students have a low sense of community within the group, the study examines different factors to discuss why that may be.

Konflikthantering: En studie med fokus kring barns konflikter och förskollärarens kvalitéer ur ett barns perspektiv2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Attitudes towards safety amongst junior crew onboard commercially registred yachts.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Safety is a key corner stone in order to minimize risks of accidents onboard vessels and yachts. Despite existing regulations and rules, reports of lethal accidents keeps occuring on all types of vessels. Previous studies show that in any work place attitudes towards risks play a key part in order to create a safe enviorment in the work place. Seeing the number of accidents in recent reports onboard yachts, the research investigated the existing attitudes towards safety amongst junior crew onboard commercially registred yachts.

Semistructured comprehensive interviews with eight crew were conducted, and results showed a disregard for existing regulations onboard their yachts. Moreover it was found attitudes onboard towards safety are not all positive, due to several factors creating behaviours which are not following safety procedures. The results showed that severeal factors are hindering a more positive attitude towards safety. The existing attitudes are influenced by existing culture in the industry, other crewmembers and employers. But also job security and time factors played a part in their behaviour and how they coped with risks. Despite these results, respondents showed a willingness to change and to adopt a more positive attitude towards safety.

Att göra en Bjästa: En textanalys om skuldbeläggningen av ett våldtäktsoffer2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Each day, thousands of union representatives engage in the wellbeing of employees of companies all around Sweden with the common goal of improving workplace conditions. They do this by represent the employees on the workplace, as a link between the unionized employees and the employer. The union representatives are put in between the demands from the employer and employees wishes and needs which often create some tensions or impending conflicts. To be able to handle these conflicts of interest, the union representatives must communicate well with the employer as well as the employees to create understanding and cooperation between the parties involved. This qualitative study describes the experiences of five union representatives when mediating and negotiate in different kinds of conflicts and aims to create a deeper understanding for how these representatives manage their assignments. The study shows that factors such as honesty, openness, dialog and the ability of putting yourself in another person’s perspective are central in the informant’s attempts to manage and solve the assignment at hand. The results found in the study are not to be generalized, but can be viewed as a contribution to the already existing research regarding union representatives position as a whole. It contributes in a meaningful way to the process of understanding the representative’s experiences of being a link between members of the unions and the employers.

This case study investigates the role of social-psychological variables in the general

public’s intention to support conservation of five local biotopes. A questionnaire

survey of 245 people was carried out in Kristianstad Municipality, Sweden. In

hierarchical regression analyses, public intention to support conservation was partly

predicted by attitude toward biodiversity conservation and by personal norm. The

relationship between these variables and intention differed depending on the ecological

content of the biotope. It is concluded that when communicating the importance

of conserving biotopes to the public, the message should be tailored according to the

ecological content of the biotope as well as with regard to public attitudes and

    personal norms.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a social-psychological relevance in allowing animals to be involved in therapy work. I have examined if the animals may contribute to effects on human relationships between caregivers and patients, and if the animals can contribute to helping patients to achieve better well-being. Through previous research and a quantitative interview I have received answers to the following questions: How are animals used in the treatment work? How do animals affect the relationship between caregiver-patient? In what ways do animals in treatment affect relationships between people? How do the professionals who work with animals believe that animals can affects the patient? I have interviewed people working in different kinds of treatment work using animals. The areas examined include work with animals at youth care, police, disability care, elderly care and school. The results obtained have shown that there are a variety of direct and indirect effects where the animals can affect us humans and our relationships to each other. Animals effect our social interaction. The animals are described as social catalysts that can help us to build bridges between people.

Med religionen som utgångspunkt i en sekulär vardag: En kvalitativ studie om fyra unga muslimers vardag i Sverige2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sexual debut before the age of 14 leads to poorer psychosocial health and risky behaviour in later life2015In: Acta Paediatrica, ISSN 0803-5253, E-ISSN 1651-2227, Vol. 104, no 1, p. 91-100Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: This study investigated the relationship between sexual debut before 14 years of age and socio-demographics, sexual experience, health, experience of child abuse and behaviour at 18 years of age. Methods: A sample of 3432 Swedish high school seniors completed a survey about sexuality, health and abuse at the age of 18. Results: Early debut was positively correlated with risky behaviours, such as the number of partners, experience of oral and anal sex, health behaviours, such as smoking, drug and alcohol use, and antisocial behaviour, such as being violent, lying, stealing and running away from home. Girls with an early sexual debut had significantly more experience of sexual abuse. Boys with an early sexual debut were more likely to have a weak sense of coherence, low self-esteem and poor mental health, together with experience of sexual abuse, selling sex and physical abuse. A multiple logistic regression model showed that a number of antisocial acts and health behaviours remained significant, but early sexual debut did not increase the risk of psychiatric symptoms, low self-esteem or low sense of coherence at 18 years of age. Conclusion: Early sexual debut was associated with problematic behaviours during later adolescence, and this vulnerability requires attention from parents and healthcare providers.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine socialworkers reflections around their own cultural belonging in relation to childcare investigations involving families with a different cultural background. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with five socialworkers and was conducted in order to explore their reasoning surrounding their work as investigators within social services, from the perspective of both the workers and their clients cultural identity. My sources were of different age and different level of experience. The data from the interviews has been interpreted with the help of previous research and theories about cultural belonging and the meeting of cultures aswell as ideas relevant to the study. My sources expressed awareness of their own cultural belonging and the influence this has in their work. Most of them expressed feeling frustration over the limitations and difficulties in communicating with families with a different cultural background. My informants thoughts and reflections on the subject indicate that socialwork concerning children and families with a different cultural background need an added emphasis on cultural sensitivity.

Vändpunkter: En studie om subjektiva upplevelser av vändpunkter som begrepp och fenomen2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Materialet har samlats in via öppna intervjuer.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to try to understand how individuals, in this case four university students, experience and reflects over their social reality, especially when they find themselves in the dividing line between education and working life. To try to understand the core of their subjective stories we conducted narrative interviews with four students who were approaching their bachelor degree. Our empirical data shows that all four students follow certain social structured patterns in their reflections of their education and their expectations towards their future occupation. We can also see how they differ in the ways they relate to their social reality due to their various previous experiences.

Lika barn leka bäst?: Hur påverkas engagemang av att motparten inte är en människa utan en dator?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The question that this essay posed was how the user’s engagement is affected by the fact that the other party is a computer controlled Agent, both compared to if the other party was a human-controlled Avatar, but also depending on whether the Agent displays a more human-like behavior, as opposed to a more machine-like one.

To answer this question an extensive litterature study was performed, both to develop the concept of Engagement, but also to explore other concepts, such as Social presence, Ethopoeia and Simulation of human behaviour.

These theories were then used to design a web based experiment, with the purpose of collecting empirical data. The experiment consisted of solving simple math tasks, some against the computer, but others involving a human administrator, who participated from a remote location. The measured metric was Dwell time, i.e. the actual time the user was engaged enough to focus on the activity.

The result showed that there is a definite indication that the level of engagement in activities is lower if the other party is controlled by a computer, as opposed to it being controlled by a human. The second part of the question was not as clearly answered by the result, but the author believes the result can be interpreted as showing an increase of engagement.

Varför lönearbeta?: En studie om två individers erfarenheter och värderingar kring arbetslivet2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe how two wage-earners experience and value their work. I chose a descriptive reserch approach and I conducted a qualitative study in the form of two interviews. I have applied two well-known theories from the field of social psychology – the individualisation and Sence Of Coherence (SOC) – to enhance my arguments and to improve my comprehension in the subjekt.

The study reveals that my informants feel good and get motivated as wage-earners. By waged labor they feel securcity, meaningfullness, confirmation and belonging, which makes salaried work high valued. Even if my informants had unlimited financial resources, they would probably still be working, but perhaps in different ways than today.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study´s focus was a group of participants of a social movement called The Zeitgeist Movement. The purpose of this study was to understand and convey what causes participants of this movement to engage despite that the prevailing culture teaches them otherwise. With qualitative methodology of participatory observation and semi-structured interviews with ten participants, our objective has been to answer the following questions: What are the driving forces that make these people act, which approach do they have to “reality” and how do they relate to it, and what are the potential consequences with this approach? The study has shown that their critical and questioning attitude towards their perception of reality and their social constructivist view of it lead to conflicts between them and their fellowmen. The data was then analyzed with Alfred Schütz phenomenological theories in synthesis with Zygmunt Baumans critical societal analysis and theories. The study's focus was on the Gothenburg chapter of the Swedish Zeitgeist Movement. We did not make any comparisons with other national or international chapters of the movement.

    Abstract [en]

”Contentment in the moment” is a classic grounded theory exploring safety and contentment within a small community in northern Norway. The purpose of the study was to explore the village’s everyday life from a participant’s perspective and to develop an understanding of their living conditions. We found different survival strategies, which have their roots in the village’s history of poverty, isolation and harsh climate. Today these strategies have changed from a matter of life and death to a modern psychosocial foundation of contentment. The study is based on four and a half years of observations, in-depth interviews and informal but focused conversations with people living in Polarfjorden. The data was analysed using the constant comparative method of classic grounded theory. In this article we further relate our work to more general sociological theory, more specifically to Charles Tilly’s work on reason and routines.

Viewing Child Pornography: Prevalence and Correlates in a Representative Community Sample of Young Swedish Men2015In: Archives of Sexual Behavior, ISSN 0004-0002, E-ISSN 1573-2800, Vol. 44, no 1, p. 67-79Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Most research on child pornography use has been based on selected clinical or criminal justice samples; risk factors for child pornography use in the general population remain largely unexplored. In this study, we examined prevalence, risk factors, and correlates of viewing depictions of adult–child sex in a population-representative sample of 1,978 young Swedish men (17–20 years, Mdn = 18 years, overall response rate, 77 %). In an anonymous, school-based survey, participants self-reported sexual coercion experiences, attitudes and beliefs about sex, perceived peer attitudes, and sexual interests and behaviors; including pornography use, sexual interest in children, and sexually coercive behavior. A total of 84 (4.2 %) young men reported they had ever viewed child pornography. Most theory-based variables were moderately and significantly associated with child pornography viewing and were consistent with models of sexual offending implicating both antisociality and sexual deviance. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, 7 of 15 tested factors independently predicted child pornography viewing and explained 42 % of the variance: ever had sex with a male, likely to have sex with a child aged 12–14, likely to have sex with a child 12 or less, perception of children as seductive, having friends who have watched child pornography, frequent pornography use, and ever viewed violent pornography. From these, a 6-item Child Pornography Correlates Scale was constructed and then cross-validated in a similar but independent Norwegian sample.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this quantitative study was to gain an understanding of how the individual's socio-cultural influences may contribute to their management of stressors. This by comparing a group of firefighters from Värends Räddningstjänst i Växjö with a control group by using a salutogenic perspective examine if the concept of SOC (Sense of Coherence) may be a possible explanation to how firemen cope with the stressors they face in their profession. The secondary purpose was to investigate whether individuals' estimated health interacts with the degree of SOC though these are assumed to interact. The study involved 75 respondents including 26 people in the group firefighters and 49 people in the control group. Respondents from both groups were asked to answer 29 questions in the questionnaire SOC-29 and overestimate their perceived health. The results showed that firefighters have a significant higher average level of SOC comparing to the control group and that the degree of SOC interact with perceived health.

    Abstract [sv]

Adaptation to care dependency in community care2017In: Quality in Ageing and Older Adults, ISSN 2044-1827, Vol. 18, no 4, p. 254-264Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the lived experiences of adapting to care dependency among adults receiving health and social care in ordinary housing. Design/methodology/approach This was done by conducting a phenomenological study by interviewing ten adults, receiving home care services in ordinary housing. Findings Participants not only adapted by becoming a ?good patient? but they had four strategies they used: sociability, distance, competence and compliance, contributing to a sense of dignity and personal safety. Research limitations/implications Further research is needed regarding how to preserve quality of care with adults with various ways of adapting to care dependency. Practical implications The relationship between professionals and adults in care dependency is a dynamic process where a need for understanding different modes of adaptation is vital. Good treatment and quality care may be different things to different adults, depending on what aspects of the process of adaptation concern them the most, and depending on their individual adaptation strategy. Originality/value This paper contributes to the understanding of modes of adaptation to care dependency from the perspective of adults indicating that working person centered may include respecting strategies not traditionally being associated with ?the good patient.?

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between leaders' negative emotions and leadership styles. Faculty members at a Swedish university between 1995 and 2007 were surveyed. Members who had worked at the same institution the entire period provided a total of 48 assessments regarding the styles and emotions of their leaders (deans). The results show that some negative emotions and leadership styles are related. For an organisation to perform well (e.g., in terms of work environment), leaders should consider managing their emotions.

Mucksjuka: Ett socialpsykologiskt fenomen2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
