Why does height matter in hiring?2014In: Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics, ISSN 2214-8043, E-ISSN 2214-8051, Vol. 52, p. 35-38Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research shows the existence of a height premium in the workplace with tall individuals receiving more benefits across several domains (e.g., earnings) relative to short people. The current study probes deeper into the height premium by focusing on the specific favorable traits, attributes, and abilities tall individuals are presumed to have, ultimately giving these individuals an advantage in hiring. In an experiment, we made a male job applicant taller or shorter by digitally manipulating photographs, and attached these to job applications that were evaluated by professional recruiters. We find that in the context of hiring a project leader, the height premium consists of increased perceptions of the candidate's general competence, specific job competency (including employability), and physical health, whereas warmth and physical attractiveness seem to matter less. Interestingly, physical height predicted recruiters' hiring intentions even when statistically controlling for competence, warmth, health, and attractiveness.

Frihet under ansvar eller ansvar under tillsyn?: Om dokumentstyrning av professioner2017Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Swedish welfare state retrenchment and the call for women’s entrepreneurship to fill the void2015In: The 4th European Conference on Politics and Gender 2015 June 11-13 Uppsala, Sweden, 2015, p. 1-19Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The last two decades have seen major welfare state retrenchment in Sweden. The public sector, which used to be a large and stable employer for women, was downsized. Public schools and public health and care services were privatized. Customer choice models were introduced. The rhetoric connected to privatization stressed the unique opportunities for women formerly employed by the state to start their own businesses in this sector, now open for competition and private initiatives. In this paper we ask what the results were. We discuss the results from a feminist perspective, i.e we ask if privatization and business ownership has improved women’s situation on the labor market, or not. The paper draws together the research findings from our own empirical research (about fifteen different studies) as well as from research done by other Nordic scholars in the field.

Are people fuzzy about who they work with?: An experimental test of Becker’s coworker discrimination hypothesis2019In: The Social science journal (Fort Collins), ISSN 0362-3319, E-ISSN 1873-5355Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We used an experiment to investigate whether people’s decisions over employment opportunities are affected by the ethnicity and sex of their potential future coworkers. University students (N = 1,406) were asked to state the lowest hourly wage rate at which they would be willing to accept a job on a campus food truck, where they would work alongside the food truck owner. The ethnicity and sex of the food truck owners were randomized across participants. Results showed no signs of coworker prejudice in terms of the probability of being interested in the job and reservation wage.

The managerial position in a Swedish municipal organization: possibilities and limitations2018In: Economic and Industrial Democracy, ISSN 0143-831X, E-ISSN 1461-7099, Vol. 39, no 3, p. 500-535Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to explore how a group of managers construct their reality, more specifically what it means to work as a manager in a municipal organization. The empirical data for the study were obtained from a Swedish medium-sized municipality and the study takes as its research approach grounded theory, as developed by Glaser and Strauss. Consequently, the empirical data formed the basis for the research, which takes a multi-methodical and theory-generating approach. The methods used in the study include the use of a questionnaire study, interviews in focus groups, observations, reflective work diaries, and the creation of feedback sessions. The result shows that the managers work in an organization where conflicting and competing value systems act together. These can be interpreted as environmental factors and external bounds on a structural societal level, which cannot be influenced. A point of analysis is that these factors and external bounds to a high degree permeate the manager’s workday and can therefore be seen as a plausible explanation for the boundless nature of the managerial task. For most of the managers of the study, this was expressed as uncertainty as to how to define and interpret goals and as to what the managerial role includes with regard to areas of responsibility. It is interesting to ask, however, whether these conditions are not characteristic of the role of managers and work life in general. The results also show that the substantive theory of the study was not judged to be valid for the municipal companies. These managers do not express as ambivalent an approach to competing value systems as the managers in other sections of the municipality do. Nor do they appear to question their professional knowledge, the work content or managership. Another empirical important finding is that the managers believe that the organizational conditions limit ability to carry out the manager task, but that, despite this, they indicate, paradoxically, that they like their work and the social work environment.

Låtfabriken: En studie av upphovspersoners identifiering med sitt arbete i produktionsmusiksektorn2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to examine how composers who specializes in production music identify themselves with their composing and work, this with help from the organisations that they support themselves through. The two organisations are STIM, The Swedish Composers International Musicbureu, or Epidemic Sound. The difference between the two are mainly that with STIM the composers let them manage the administration and to collect their income with Epidemic Sound is that they sell their righs to Epidemic Sound for a flat-fee. Because of this transaction the composition is now owned by the company and they can rent it out to other production companies who would like to have the music in their productions. To the study four composers from STIM, four composers from Epidemic Sound, one publisher and one representative from STIM have been interviewed. In the report it emerges that the composers that are from STIM have worked with music for a long time, the work is almost like their destiny, they see their compositions as artwork than as a craftmanship, they put big value to the copyright law, and the commission is a secondary reason to why they do what they do. The composers for Epidemic Sound on the other hand see their work more like craftmanship and the more secure salary are the reason why the composers choose Epidemic Sound. With the help from organizational-, motivational- and identitybased theories connections has been made between the theories and revenue model. This study shows that there’s been a change within the swedish market for production music since Epidemic Sound was founded in 2009. A change has occurd regarding the institutionalized approach to traditionally license music to production companies. This change has given a new type of composers with another work identity an opportunity to provide themselves on their music. This has been detected by studying how the composers identify themselves with their work and their composing depending on what revenue model they choose.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine underlying causes in cases of dropout from the Master mariner programme, as well as mapping out problem areas for those students who choose to drop out. The study also aims to examine whether these causes differ from previous research in the area. Of particular interest is the role work experience plays in the decision to drop out. In order to examine the subject further a qualitative method has been used and semi structured interviews have been held with respondents from a single year commencing their studies in 2012 in order for the study to be as relevant as possible. Interviews have focused around pre-determined themes, which previous research has concluded to be of importance. Results show dropout as a result of a combination of factors, and very rarely is a single factor significant enough to describe the phenomena. The sample group was homogenous to the larger population of Officers in the Swedish merchant navy, as well as to their previous class mates. The course was described in positive terms and the social network around a student was often a protective factor. Work experience is shown to be of vital importance when a student considers dropping out, especially when reality collide with the students´own glorified expectations of life at sea. This together with a negative view on future work prospects and a general lack of interest in shipping was commonly reason for dropping out.

Ethnic origin, local labour markets and self-employment in Sweden: A multlilevel approach2012Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We investigate the importance of ethnic origin and local labour markets conditions for self-employment propensities in Sweden. In line with previous research we find differences in the self-employment rate between different immigrant groups as well as between different immigrant cohorts. We use a multilevel regression approach in order to quantify the role of ethnic background, point of time for immigration and local market conditions in order to further understand differences in self-employment rates between different ethnic groups. We arrive at the following: The self-employment decision is to a major extent guided by factors unobservable in register data. Such factors might be i.e. individual entrepreneurial ability and access to financial capital. The individual’s ethnic background and point of time for immigration play a smaller role for the self-employment decision but are more important than local labour market conditions.

Attityder till användandet av skyddsutrustning: En undersökning av arbetsledarens attityder till en säkrare arbetsmiljö till sjöss2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Sailing together from different shores: labour markets and inequality on board merchant ships2019In: Global Networks, ISSN 1470-2266, E-ISSN 1471-0374Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we analyse the consequences of the conditions of the labour-market contracts for working on board merchant ships. More specifically, we examine how seafarers hired on different contracts work together. Seafarers' conditions of work differ considerably: some, mainly workers in the West, have permanent contracts with a shipping company, are paid a relatively high monthly wage and can go ashore every second month, whereas others performing the same tasks may have to stay at sea for more than six months at a time, and work for less money on temporary contracts. Drawing on the economic sociology of markets and institutional theory, in this article we present the institutional conditions of globalized labour markets for seafarers and analyse unique data derived from observations and interviews on board merchant ships. We argue that the notion of market is a key explanatory factor for how the work is conducted on board. Theoretically, our elaboration on markets allows us to conceptualize and address global and transnational markets.

Mellanchefers behov av kompetensutveckling: En kvalitativ studie om vilka behov mellanchefer upplever att de behöver kompetensutvecklas inom i offentlig och privat sektor2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The peer review game: an agent-based model of scientists facing resource constraints and institutional pressures2018In: Scientometrics, ISSN 0138-9130, E-ISSN 1588-2861, Vol. 116, no 3, p. 1401-1420Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper looks at peer review as a cooperation dilemma through a game-theory framework. We built an agent-based model to estimate how much the quality of peer review is influenced by different resource allocation strategies followed by scientists dealing with multiple tasks, i.e., publishing and reviewing. We assumed that scientists were sensitive to acceptance or rejection of their manuscripts and the fairness of peer review to which they were exposed before reviewing. We also assumed that they could be realistic or excessively over-confident about the quality of their manuscripts when reviewing. Furthermore, we assumed they could be sensitive to competitive pressures provided by the institutional context in which they were embedded. Results showed that the bias and quality of publications greatly depend on reviewer motivations but also that context pressures can have a negative effect. However, while excessive competition can be detrimental to minimising publication bias, a certain level of competition is instrumental to ensure the high quality of publication especially when scientists accept reviewing for reciprocity motives.

    Abstract [en]

As the competition for employment toughens amongst deck officers high effort is required in order to stand out from the crowd regarding job applications. The purpose of this study has been to investigate what content the Swedish shipping industry values most in CVs and cover letters. This was achieved by interviewing nine recruiters from different shipping companies and management agencies that recruit Swedish junior officers. A literature search regarding previous studies concerning recruitment provided a wider understanding of the subject and its relevance for maritime science graduates. The literature search also revealed a knowledge gap regarding recruiters in the Swedish shipping industry preferences about CVs and cover letters. The results of the study show some patterns and tendencies amongst the respondents, common to all of which is a preference of short and concise CVs and cover letters with content that is relevant for the applied position. The results also show that a job application is interpreted subjectively and therefore to some extent must be tailored to each individual employment opportunity.

Breaking the ice: a work domain analysis of icebreaker operations2018In: Cognition, Technology & Work, ISSN 1435-5558, E-ISSN 1435-5566, Vol. 20, no 3, p. 443-456Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Icebreakers are special-purpose ships designed to operate in different ice-covered waters, either independently or duringassistance of weaker ships. In the Baltic Sea, as well as elsewhere, they are essential for maintaining continuous sea transportservices during wintertime. Icebreaker operations are complex, and every situation in which a vessel requires assistanceis unique, due to, e.g. changing ice and weather conditions, geographical location or language proficiency of the crew onboard the icebreaker or assisted vessel. The icebreaker crew has considerable freedom to adapt to each situation, yet, forsafe operations, there are constraints to which the crew has to conform. The study presented in this paper aims at identifyingthe constraints on nautical officers on board icebreakers during operations, as well as special situations that increasecognitive load. A work domain analysis based on a group interview with nautical icebreaker officers shows the multitudeof tasks performed on board icebreakers. Furthermore, it identifies constraints specific to icebreaker operations such as iceassessment and direct icebreaking, but also generic constraints such as language and communication skills. At times, safetyand efficiency come into conflict, resulting in a trade-off between the two. When that happens, safety gets priority, and theoperation stops until the situation has been evaluated. In addition, several situations that increase cognitive load are identified, with the common denominator that they add elements of uncertainty, e.g. severe weather and technical malfunctions. Finally, further research within the area of icebreaker operations is recommended, with a continued focus on the systemconstraints, and their potential for system improvement.

Strategiskt kompetensförsörjningsarbete: - Hur landsbygdskommuner arbetar med kompetensförsörjning2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this work was to investigate how it is to move in hierarchy from crew to

officer within the seafaring profession and how to be affected by this. How you are

perceived by the crew when going from to represent a part of a system to represent a

different part of the same system and if you are ready to assume the responsibilities of the

    new role entails?

This is relevant and interesting as we will soon is facing at this transition. The work is

based on a qualitative approach. The choice of this method gave the information needed

    for a perfect result.

Interviews were conducted through personal meetings with active officers which also

provided the opportunity to ask follow-up questions and the respondents were given the

opportunity to share their experiences. The results showed that the transition from crew to

Arbetsgruppens syn på arbetsplatsträffens funktion: Ett forum för kollektivt och organisatoriskt lärande?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on study of the employment market for graduates from the Master Mariner degree that graduated in 2010, 2013 and 2016. It is a comparison between the three years of graduation within two Swedish universities that offer the Master Mariner programme. Data collection with combined quantitative and qualitative techniques within a mixed-mode study. Results show a majority occupied within the maritime sector, although vessel-based employment has decreased compared to past studies and redundancy is an emerging element. The percentage occupied within the vessel-based sector is higher in Kalmar Maritime Academy, Linnaeus University, compared to Chalmers University, the results from which show a higher concentration in shore-based occupation. The conclusion of this thesis is that the employment market for graduates from maritime institutions in Sweden is undergoing change.

The Effect of Schooling on Cognitive Skills2013Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

How schooling affects cognitive skills is a fundamental question forstudies of human capital and labor markets. While scores on cognitive ability testsare positively associated with schooling, it has proven difficult to ascertain whetherthis relationship is causal. Moreover, the effect of schooling is difficult to separate from the confounding factors of age at test date, relative age within a classroom, season of birth, and cohort effects. In this paper, we use a fundamentally different identification approach compared to the previous literature. We exploit conditionally random variation in the assigned test date for a battery of cognitive tests which almost all 18 year-old males were required to take in preparation for military servicein Sweden. Both age at test date and number of days spent in school vary randomly across individuals after flexibly controlling for date of birth, parish, and expected graduation date (the three variables the military conditioned on when assigningtest date). We find an extra 10 days of school instruction raises cognitive scoreson crystallized intelligence tests (synonym and technical comprehension tests) by approximately one percent of a standard deviation, whereas extra nonschool dayshave almost no effect. The benefit of additional school days is homogeneous, with similar effect sizes based on past grades in school, parental education, and father’s earnings. In contrast, test scores on fluid intelligence tests (spatial and logic tests) do not increase with additional days of schooling, but do increase modestly with age. We discuss the importance of these findings for questions about the malleability of cognitive skills in young adults, schooling models of signaling versus human capital ,the interpretation of test scores in wage regressions, and policies related to the length of the school year

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how Swedens national values concepts participation and meaningfulness interpreted and converts by assistant nurses, a municipality in southern Sweden, in order to deepen the knowledge of the national values.

Method: A qualitative approach has been used as a method in this study, with semi-structured interviews as a base. To gather empirical material, we chose to interview seven nurses who are currently working as assistant nurses in care for the elderly.

Theory: Our theoretical points have been Antonovskys salutogenic approach and SOC, sense of coherence, and Maslow's pathogenic hierarchy of needs. These different theories and approaches have helped us to analyze our empirical material.

Results: The four different themes, presented in the results of this study, are designed based on previous scientific research. The different themes in this study are the following: Swedens national values and the municipality's interpretation, participation and meaningfulness, time-, attitude- and dignityperspective. Our results indicate that the basic needs outweigh the social needs and that the assistant nurses prioritize the basic needs. The results of this study show that on one hand there is a strong connection between the keywords, participation and meaningfulness, but on the other hand, there is also a strong connection between the priorities of needs and the timeperspective in the care of the elderly.

Effekten av en ny konvention: En studie om hur Maritime Labour Convention 2006 har påverkat svensk sjöfart.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

On August 20, 2013 the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 entered into force. This study has through interviews with navigating officers onboard Swedish flagged vessels and through a literature study, examined the effect of the new Convention seen from the navigating officers’ point of view. The purpose of this study was to gain insight into how the Convention effected the crew and examine how the requirements are complied with and what changes has been made onboard in regards of hours of work, hours of rest and manning levels. The interviews revealed that no major changes have been made onboard as result of the implementation of the Convention. The reason for this is that most of the requirements of the Convention was already implemented in Swedish law. It appeared, however, that seafarers are experiencing difficulties in meeting the demands regarding hours of rest and that this is not being documented truthfully. The reason for this is percieved to be that the manning levels onboard the ships today is not sufficient. The results show that many solutions exist to this problem, and that greater demands needs to be placed on shipowners and flag states for a change to take place.

    Abstract [en]

This study deals with employment agreements: the Swedish Storsjö Agreement for officers and telegraphists, Faroese Employment Agreement for Swedish officers and the ITF Uniform ”TCC” Collective Agreement for crews onboard flag of convenience ships. The purpose of the comparison was to determine differences between the agreements concerning termination, economical compensation for illness and injury cases and liability in case of default in regards of social security. The method of the work was a qualitative literature study. Storsjö Agreement and the Faroese Agreement is relatively similar to each other regarding termination of the contract, while the ITF Agreement differ from the other agreements. Regarding economical compensation for illness and injury cases all the agreements provides a safety net for the officer. The compensation with Storsjö Agreement is based on the Swedish Social Insurance Agency payouts, while the Faroese Agreement and ITF Agreement have separate insurance policies that the company arranges to individual officers. Regarding liability due to default, the ITF Agreement contract differ since it does not have to be any exceptional reasons for the default, which is required in Storsjö Agreement and the Faroese Agreement, to make the officer personally responsible for the damage. The comparison gives a good insight into how the contracts are structured around national laws and/or the lack of them. Generally Storsjö Agreement is more reassuring than the Faroese Agreement and the ITF Agreement concerning social security.

Från individ till kollektiv och en lärande organisation: En empirisk studie om kunskapshantering2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

International Maritime Organisation (IMO) have for many years worked to simplify and harmonise the reporting formalities for ships leaving and entering ports in international voyages. The purpose has been to minimize the amount of data and to simplify declarations and documents required port states. The latest action taken in Europe is the EU directive 2010/65/EU so called Maritime Single Window (MSW). This study examine the effects and change in work since Maritime Single Window was implemented in Europe for users connected to the Swedish maritime sector. A survey investigation form was used as method and presented as a questionnaire form with a total nr of 20 questions. Semi structured qualitative interviews were also conducted to compare and confirm the results from the questionnaire form. The study shows that the directive 2010/65/EU has resulted in general increased work for users of Maritime Single Window. The conclusion of the study shows that the increased work is generated by a not yet fulfilled purpose of the directive to harmonise and simplify reporting formalities for ships leaving and entering ports in international voyages.

The Swedish Maritime Administration is today the authority with the main responsibility inSweden regarding search and rescue where the pilot boat is one of the vessels involved. However, the current system of salvage is considered to have some deficiencies regarding therescue of persons from the water whom are unconscious or severely injured. The purpose of this study was that after an initial survey of the different systems for rescuing unconscious or severely injured people, examine what crew members from the Swedish Maritime Administrations pilot boats thinks about the systems and the difficulties surrounding the salvage. The interviews revealed that today's current system is not built to be practiced with orfor the rescue of someone who is unconscious or badly injured. The investigation also shows that the prevailing weather conditions and time are crucial factors for a successful rescue. The majority of the crewmembers consider that a system located in the stern with today's existing system is the combination of systems that could make the rescue work aboard the pilot boats easier and more efficient.

Title: ‘Lots of talking and less action’ – A qualitative study of knowledge transfer in an organization.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to create an understanding of the process of knowledge transfer from an individual to an organization and of the organizational obstacles for knowledge transfer which can be found after a completed investment for employee development.

Method: The used method was a qualitative research strategy with an abductive approach. The design of the research has been a case study in which the case involved how an organization uses the knowledge that individuals received after the completion of a specialist education. The data collection was done through qualitative interviews and the material has been interpreted with a hermeneutic approach.

Conclusion: Through our questions of research we gained an understanding of the obstacles for knowledge transfer in an organization and the importance of management when creating a supporting environment for knowledge and knowledge transfer processes.

Sustainable working life development through interactive research2018In: PIN-C Conference Proccedings: 2018 Eskilstuna, Sweden, 2018, p. 1-5Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Interactive research has emerged as a new approach to collaborative research in working life research, and it is characterized by a continuous joint learning process between the researchers and the practitioners. In this paper we argue that interactive research is a way to advance scientific knowledge about the development of new types of work arrangements and development of sustainable working life. We present the basic ideas and benefits of the interactive research approach, illustrated through a practical case, the HELIX Competence Centre and discuss potential limitation and challenges associated with this form of collaborative research.

Sustainable Development in Organizations: Studies on Innovative Practices2015Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

An increasingly competitive environment can lead to considerable problems for many organizations as they struggle to adapt to change. As a result, they fail to create the conditions that can lead to sustainable development over the long term, thus affecting the capabilities of employees. This book provides a fresh perspective on sustainable change and development in organizations, as well as a critical perspective on lean implementation, work environment and sustainability.

The expert contributors address the development in, and of, organizations, as well as the development process between organizations, such as in networks or clusters. They discuss topics, such as the role of customers in the development of public organizations; developing knowledgeable practice at work; exploring evidence-based practice and the challenge of regional gender contracts.

Undergraduates and postgraduates in different management fields including organizational theory, innovation, human resources, quality development and entrepreneurship will find this book to be of interest. The empirical results and interdisciplinary approach will appeal to practitioners and policy-makers at national, as well as international levels.

    Abstract [en]

Björn Gustavsen, with an original professional background as a lawyer and judge in his native Norway, has had a formative role in organizational development processes in Norway, Sweden, Scandinavia, and the European Union over four decades. Following in the tradition of Norwegian working life research by Trist and Thorsrud, he has provided the conceptual framework and practical case studies which have driven major national and international programs. He has learned from different experience of organizational change in, for example, the USA and Japan, but he has identified a distinctive way forward for the European Union, where he has acted as a senior adviser. In contrast to conventional Taylorist top-down management and reliance on expert consultants, his approach has been bottom-up and concept driven, with a focus on empowering workers. With a commitment to long-term sustainable processes, he has emphasized the importance of capacity building and succession planning, highlighting development organizations. His approach to partnership and coalition building has enabled collaboration across sectors, in the cause of creating collaborative advantage. He has a distinctive fluent academic writing style, but spends most of his time engaged in the design and practice of development, and editing the work of younger colleagues. He has seen the role of academic journals and edited books in the development process, so has encouraged new publications, but without seeking to dominate. He took ideas of action research and case studies and applied them to national enterprise development programs, working with the labor market parties. This has resulted in a distinctive research and development culture. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to put light into a problem that often is seen as a complexed, vaguely legislated “grey area” in the fundamental laws regarding access to official documents, mainly focusing on the technical and workforce related boundaries. Sweden is worldwide known for the democracy and openness. We have the freedom of information in terms of access, followed by the rights to write, publish and share our perspectives with the rest of the world. These rights have been protected in the deepest core of jurisdiction for decades. Although the law remains, society has evolved as technology has to some extent replaced traditional paperwork over the years and changed the way we exchanged, store and handle information. The Swedish government claim to be much aware of the changes that is needed to be done to keep our rights in the modern society, although the jurisdiction remains more than a few steps behind. There are exceptions where official information is to be unofficial. Some of these exceptions are not surprising, others are more. If we speak of sensitive information that could cause harm for the individual, it should be treated with care to protect us. What about information a government has access to, but it is stored it in a digital form, one we cannot read or see in its present state and therefore require a process involving a program they do not have at hand or takes time to access or “reform” the information to make it accessible. This have impact on whether the information is or is not official information for the public. Swedish institutions handle each request individually, routines of the process vary, along with the access, or lack of access to the needed technology and, or knowledge at hand, which less surprisingly leads us to a various result. This essay aims to clarify, nevertheless put light into the spots where it is needed for a deeper understanding of what is and is not official information. Sweden claimed and still claims, to be very fund of our fundamental regulations regarding openness and transparency. At the time we consider joining the European Union (EU) it was essential for the government to be certain of sustaining these right, this was done by a written request before signing a membership that these rights where to remain. As the result was positive from EU, we accepted the invitation to become a member state. Lately, we have shown to put “neutralisation”, as in adapting to the rest of the Union over openness, giving us more exceptions and therefore more secrecy. Openness is not as welcomed in the other member states and the regulations are here to support us to melt into the picture. The essay will therefore look into the international spectrum, mainly focusing on the effects of our membership and compare the general EU member states to Sweden.

The aim of this survey is to examine if female leaders develop through challenges in work life. It will also examine which learning theories that can be identified when they meet challenges. The survey is written from a workplace learning perspective. This qualitative survey is based on six interviews with female leaders in various business categories and the result is analyzed with a method described in Kvale (2014). This method is based on analysis from current studies and theories.Among other things this survey reveals that female leaders develop through challenges in work life. This survey also shows that the female leaders are learning through experience and social participation. How they learn depends on which challenge they meet and their individual skills.

    Abstract [en]

Using ethnographical methods, this thesis examines the prevalence and character of an occupational culture among patrolling police in terms of frames of reference, conduct and attitudes, a culture which overrides or is in opposition to the official mandate of the police force.

It is suggested that the occupational culture of the patrolling police should not be regarded as a homogenous culture but be seen as describing a continuum from a legalistic to a more autonomous perspective. The legalistic perspective is founded on the official social mandate of the police. The autonomous approach on the other hand is regarded as an independent social power with a clearly partisan interest in defending an often idealised segment of society loosely termed ”the general public” by fighting alleged troublemakers and criminals. This partisanship legitimises what from the autonomous perspective is considered ”real police work”. This primarily involves dealing with crime within the patrolling officers’ area of competence, with clear boundaries between right and wrong.

The ”real police work” can be linked to another term within the autonomous perspective:”practical police work”. This includes procedures where immediate results are emphasised at the cost of legally and/or institutionally imposed working practices, a special ”police eye” for what can be seen as different (deviant) and therefore threatening, a relative independence in relation to the code of laws, use of repressive powers to maintain respect for the police and finally a mutual code of silence among policemen.

You can also discern three sets of opposing attitudes in the taxonomy. The first one is an alienated ”tired” attitude as opposed to a dedicated ”hungry” attitude. The second one concerns a repressive tough attitude that emphasises the police as a violent power versus a helpful soft attitude that lays more stress on co-operative structures. Finally there is a distinction between a reflective, intellectual approach open to change and an automatic intuitive response where the individual officer tends to generalise the cognitive patterns of the immediate situations so far that it dominates his whole outlook on the surrounding world. This also comprises a general distrust of the surrounding world combined with a view of other people based on simple (facile?) categorisation.

The study suggests that when police officers speak about police work more generally the autonomous perspective often dominates.

In practice however police on the whole follow a legalistic perspective in terms of following police regulations. Departures from this are nevertheless recurrent

and the factors that decide whether an autonomous perspective will prevail are  on the one hand the police officers’ level of commitment to their task and on the other an appraisal of the risks of being personally punished for their actions.

Police work between legitimacy and effiency: Handling the expectations on the role of the police2007In: In Tension between Organization and Profession: Professionals in Nordic Public Service / [ed] Carola Aili, Lars-Erik Nilsson, Lennart G Svensson, Pamela Denicolo, Lund: Nordic Academic Press, 2007, 1, p. 303-321Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

What is it like to be a professional in today’s Nordic Public sector organisations? In Tension between Organization and Profession describes everyday problems experienced by individuals in offical positions.

The authors’ analyses are set against a background of rising rates of sick leave, more cases of mental burnout, decreasing resources and constant demand for professional improvement. Rapid changes in organizations, such as new forms of leadership, new technology and management by documents and the call for client-oriented practices are part of the professional working life.

The individual professional is the prime focus of this book. Tensions that arise between the individual and the organization/profession are illustrated by a range of examples of problems that public officals, such as teachers, policemen and nurses, are confronted with on a daily basis.

The authors discuss subjects such as increased individualization, complexity in relationships, intensified pace and fragmentation of work.

The title In Tension between Organization and Profession intends to signal an invitation to further the research about a dynamic field where today’s professionals meet the requirements of their professions and organizations.

Etiska problem i polisarbete: Sammanställning av fyra enkätundersökningar angående polispersonals uppfattning : arbetsrapport2000Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

When students of the Nautical Science and the Marine Engineering Programmes are on the ship-based internship, this means limited opportunities for physical activity. Factors such as long hours of work, bad weather and a lack of sleep can affect the students while at sea. Recommendations from the Public Health Authority mean that adult persons from the age of 18 need to exercise a physical activity at least 150 minutes per week at moderate intensity so as not to become too sedentary. According to the Maritime Labor Convention, there will be a leisure space aboard ships over 3000 GT, which means that there are opportunities for physical activity on board these vessels. The purpose of this survey was to describe the physical activity of students when they are on a ship-based internship and when they have campus-based education. The purpose is also to compare the students of the Nautical Science Programme to the students of the Marine Engineering Programme when it comes to physical activity. The study also aimed to show whether the physically active students used some form of exercise-related dietary supplements. The method consisted of a quantitative study in the form of questionnaires with fixed response alternatives and questions with a graded approach. The sample consisted of 90 respondents from the Nautical Science Programme to the students of the Marine Engineering Programme at a Naval institute. Primary data was compiled in frequency tables to be able to read how the distribution in the variable looked. In order to clarify the distribution of the variable more clearly, the primary data was finally compiled in bar charts. The result showed that the respondents were more physically active when they were on the ship-based practice than when they were on campus. The increase in the physical activity of the Marine Engineering 'respondents appeared clearer while the Nautical Science respondents increase was marginal. Respondents performed more training sessions a week but shortened the length of the workout. The majority of respondents at the naval institute were physically active despite factors such as weather, long hours of work and insufficient sleep affecting them. The study also showed that about half of the respondents who performed physical activity used exercise-related dietary supplements in connection with the exercise. The most common dietary supplement in connection with training that the respondents used was protein powder. The respondents' reason for using dietary supplements was because they got more out of their training.

    Abstract [en]

After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering and collecting all the certificates necessary, the student stands ready to work as an engine officer onboard ships. Questions arise for the individual when he/she stands there, ready to initiate a new phase in his life. Questions such as: where would I want to work?, when do I get a job? and how do I get a job?

The purpose of this study is to try and show you how graduated students from Kalmar Maritime Academy from previous years have fared in entering the work market.

The method used in this study was in the form of a questionnaire sent to former students who graduated from Kalmar Maritime Academy during the years of 2009,2010 and 2011. They were given the option to answer an online questionnaire or to answer a postal questionnaire which was sent to their registered addresses.

The study involved a total of 36 people, where 20 of them chose to participate. Results from the study show that of the 20 people who chose to participate, all of them were able to find work at sea. 14 individuals were employed in Swedish shipping companies and 6 were employed by foreign shipping companies. The majority of those participating had applied for their work and received a job offer. Some people had managed to get a job through a contact from their cadet apprenticeship. The time to get the first job for the participants were, for most of them, short. 13 out of the 20 participants got their first job after just one or two weeks.
