The use of the prepositions to and with after the verb to talk in British and American English: A corpus-based study2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper is a study of the use of the prepositions to/with after the verb to talk in British and American English. The research is based on the material from the COBUILDDirect corpus, Longman American Spoken Corpus and New York Times CD-ROM. The common and different features of the use of talk to/with in different genres of American and British English as well as in written and spoken English were studied; special attention was paid to the factors which influence the choice of the prepositions. The research has shown that generally talk with is used much less than talk to and probably is undergoing the process of narrowing of meaning. With after talk seems to be used most often to refer to two-way communication while talk to is used to refer to both one- and two-way communication and is, therefore, more universal than talk with.

Comment se porte le français au lycée suédois ?: Évolution du rôle des plans d’études dans l’enseignement des langues vivantes 2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [fr]

Språkutveckling, medier och demokrati2014In: Medie- och informationskunnighet i Norden: en nyckel till demokrati och yttrandefrihet / [ed] Ulla Carlsson, Nordicom, 2014, p. 117-121Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Digitale Hilfsmittel im Fremdsprachenunterricht: Glosor.eu kontra traditionelle Vokabellisten beim Erlernen neuer Wörter2022Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study, pupils’ use of digital tools for learning vocabulary is compared to the use of a traditional way of learning vocabulary from a list in a book. The goal of the study is to find out if digital tools are more efficient than using vocabulary lists, when learning new words. Furthermore, this study investigates how the use of words in a context affects learning. The 40 pupils who took part in this study are learning German in the ninth grade in two different schools in the southern part of Sweden. Three vocabulary tests were conducted within four weeks. During the experiment the pupils were divided into two groups, where one used digital learning tools and the other ordinary vocabulary lists. The results in the first test did not differ much between the groups. The second test on the other hand shows a difference where many in the digital group got better results whereas several in the traditional group got lower results. In the third test both groups showed better results in the vocabulary test. The conclusion of this study is that there is no big difference between the use of digital learning tools and a traditional vocabulary list when it comes to learning new words. However, the use of words in sentences was seen to have an effect on the words that pupils remembered best. In this study, the pupils were also asked to fill in a questionnaire. This study also shows that a combination of traditional and digital learning is preferred by the pupils.

Language choices in the EFL-classroom: The actions and perceptions of four secondary school teachers in Sweden2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish National Agency for Education encourages the exclusive use of the target language (TL) in the English language classrooms. However, one may question if this is observed, as the Swedish Schools Inspectorate, in their qualitative investigation of the Swedish schools, headlined the section on language use in their observation of English lessons in the years 6-9 as “too much English in Swedish”. They found that nearly half the lessons failed to provide sufficient opportunities for pupils’ communicative competence to develop and problematized this partly as a result of lack of pedagogical training among teachers. Nonetheless, the role of the first language (L1) in the foreign language classroom is controversial. Some favor an exclusion of the L1 while others believe the L1 has an important role. This essay problematizes four English teachers’ language choices in the classroom, with the theoretical approaches that the TL should be used extensively, but that neither teachers nor pupils should be prohibited from using the L1 as it can serve important purposes and facilitate language learning if used strategically. In this study, four English teachers were interviewed to investigate what determines their language choices. It was found that while teachers primarily based their language choices on pedagogical views and knowledge about language learning, for some the choice of language was not always strategic or pedagogical. In this study, the reasons for both their strategical and inadvertent uses are investigated. This study also investigated how the teachers perceive the pupils’ language choices, and what implications these perceptions may have.

Terminology and function hybridity: A functionalist approach to the translation of an art history book2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay discusses two aspects of the retention of pragmatic text functions in translation. The functionalist approach that was used focuses on achieving congruence between the author’s intended function and the perception of the reader, i.e., the target text’s actual function. The first aim was to examine whether a focus on text functions can be beneficial when translating terminology. The second aim was to investigate if a functionalist approach can be used to assure that all functions are retained for instances where the source text encompasses more than one pragmatic function. For the purposes of this study, two excerpts from Fritz Eichenberg’s art history book The Art of the Print were translated. Individual terms as well as instances where the source text segment contained one than more pragmatic function were then analyzed with the above mentioned aims in mind. It was found that a functionalist approach, in combination with a conceptual approach to terminology, was beneficial when translating terminology. It was also observed that the surrounding co-text aided in the understanding of the author’s concept. In regard to the second aim, it was found that while a functionalist approach assured that the translator was made aware of the existing functions, the translation procedures suggested were too narrow and static to be applicable to all segments.

Grundskolans svenskämne: En systematisk litteraturstudie om svenskämnet som demokratiämne2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT

This essay deals with translation issues, mainly in regard to text function and text norms, which arose during the transfer of a German source text, situated within the field of tourism, into a Swedish target text. Special attention was paid to anglicisms, a typical feature of German marketing language and also a key stylistic feature of the source text at hand.

A challenge to translators in general is which textual and cultural considerations, besides considerations of language, should be taken into account in the translation process. In translation literature semantics and pragmatics have received considerable attention. The analysis in this particular essay was based on the skopos theory and Reiss’ translation-oriented text typology.

The analysis showed that the source text has an operative function, meaning that it is aimed at influencing the reader in a specific direction, but at the same time fulfills an informative function. Both these functions must be reflected in the translation. The comparison of text norms of tourist texts showed that the use of anglicisms is less common in Swedish tourist texts than in German tourist texts, and therefore many of the anglicisms in the source text were exchanged for equivalent Swedish expressions in the target text. When an equivalent anglicism was not available, the denotation was expressed in accordance with the function of that particular linguistic element, which means that in some cases semantic equivalence was attained and in some cases priority was given to text-normative and pragmatic equivalence.

EAP, EMI or CLIL?2016In: The Routledge Handbook of English for Academic Purposes, Routledge, 2016, p. 71-83Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

In this chapter I discuss the European-inspired notion of content and language integrated learning (CLIL). What makes CLIL different from English-medium instruction (EMI) on the one hand and English for academic purposes (EAP) on the other? A cursory examination of the acronym itself raises a number of questions. The Ls in CLIL-language and learning-are straightforward enough, but what about the I and the C? The I in CLIL stands for integrated: this signals CLIL’s dual emphasis on disciplinary learning outcomes along with language learning. Which brings us to the C in CLIL-content. More than anything else, it is this focus on the teaching of disciplinary content that makes CLIL unique. Can EAP professionals teach content? Can disciplinary experts teach language? Or does the CLIL approach necessarily imply collaboration between language and content teachers? These are some of the questions I address in this chapter.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter summarizes my research work in Swedish higher education in the area of teaching and learning in English. Sweden makes for a particularly interesting case study since there are high levels of English competence in the general population and a large percentage of university courses have traditionally been taught through the medium of English.

The work I have done falls into three broad categories:  University learning in English, University teaching in English and Disciplinary differences in attitudes to English language use.

Over the years I have used a range of data collection techniques including video recordings of lectures, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and stimulated recall. The research work is almost exclusively qualitative in nature adopting a case study approach.

    Abstract

L1 speech production is often interrupted by hesitations revealed through a variety of phenomena ranging from silent pauses to comments. Most of these interruptions are caused by the action of a control system, a  “monitor“, which checks our speech internally while it is produced or after the production has reached the articulatory level. Speech production is checked against an internal model of lexical and grammatical correctness. If the demands of the monitor are not met, a repair may take place so that the speaker’s production reaches the expected level of correctness. It would seem that the result of constant interruptions, followed by repairs, would bring disorder into our speech but, in most cases, the listener is not disturbed by these interruptions, since his perception system brings order and re-establishes the linearity of the propositional content.

The speech of L2 learners is controlled during and after production. Even if the monitor follows the same pattern of work when controlling L2 production, the repair is not necessarily done in a similar way because the learner’s internal grammar and lexicon are not complete and cannot be consulted as quickly as L1 lexicon and grammar. L2 learners rely on a certain amount of acquired knowledge but they also need to be given the time to refer to learned rules and patterns because the retrieval of these has not yet been automaticized.  As teachers, we often resent hesitations as disturbing and as an indication of the learner’s incapacity to produce correct speech.

In this study, we observe the L2 speech production of learners of French and their behaviour when meeting linguistic problems. The study is concentrated on repetitions and recasts produced when the learner hesitates and shows signs of an effort to retrieve learned knowledge. These repetitions and recasts are presented as different hypotheses put forward by the learner in his/her attempts to reach a solution to a linguistic problem. They show the L2 speech production as a step-by-step process. The focus here is on repetitions and recasts in connection with French  -ment-adverbs.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this dissertation is to observe how Swedish learners of French monitor their speech output when confronted with a linguistic problem. The study is based on empirical data consisting of recorded interviews and tasks made with first year university students.

L1 speech production is often interrupted by hesitations revealed through a variety of phenomena ranging from silent pauses to comments. Most of these interruptions are caused by the action of a control system, a “monitor” which checks our speech internally while it is produced or after the production has reached the articulation level. Speech is checked against an internal model of lexical and grammatical correctness. If the demands of the monitor are not met, a reparation may take place so that the speaker’s production eventually reaches the expected level of correctness.

In the same way, the speech of L2 learners is controlled during and after production. The pattern of work of the monitor is much the same as for the L1, but the reparation is not necessarily conducted in a similar way because the learner’s internal grammar and lexicon are not complete and cannot be consulted as quickly as the L1 lexicon and grammar. L2 learners rely on a certain amount of acquired knowledge but they also need to be given time to refer to learned rules and patterns since the retrieval of these has not yet been made automatic.

In this study, we observe the speech production of Swedish students learning French during the first semester of their academic studies. The recasts students make when trying to reach a correct solution to a linguistic problem are in focus. We can see a step-by-step process through which the speakers elaborates their production by putting forward hypotheses, each one usually containing a small modification, and try to reach an acceptable solution. In some cases we can see that the speaker might choose to focus on the communicative aspects instead of focusing on the formal correctness of the speech. On the background of L1 and L2 acquisition theories, this study focuses on two areas of difficulty for the Swedish learner: the production of –ment adverbs and the production of conjugated verbs.

Fantasy är inte bara verklighetsflykt: Att använda fantasy för att utveckla elevers läsförståelse och motivera till läsning av kanoniska texter2013Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate how Swedish teachers and student teachers of Swedish vary in their assessment of a pupil’s text, in judging both the text as a whole and its parts. In the study the informants were asked to assess a pupil’s text (a text presenting an argument) from the national examination in Swedish 1 with the aid of an assessment matrix and then complete a questionnaire assessing the text as a whole and in its parts. The responses to the questionnaire were analysed statistically with a focus on how the assessments varied. A sociocultural and situated perspective was applied in the study, along with psychometry and the theory of discourses of writing, to give more perspectives on the results. The study found that the assessments varied between grades C and A for the text as a whole and between E and A for the aspects of argumentation, content and critical reading, contextual signals and reference connectors, introduction, conclusion, situational adaptation and self-sustaining. The study also found that the student teachers were generally stricter in their assessment. The greatest variations in the student teachers’ assessment were found to concern aspects of the communication discourse, while in the teachers’ assessment it was aspects of the construction discourse that revealed the greatest variation. The greatest difference between the two groups concerned aspects of the correction discourse.

    Abstract [sv]

A Local Grammar of Cause and Effect: A Corpus-driven Study2005Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis puts forward a specialized, functional grammar of cause and effect withinthe sub-genre of biomedical research articles. Building on research into the localgrammars of dictionary definitions and evaluation, the thesis describes the applicationof a corpus-driven methodology to description of the principal lexical grammaticalpatterns which underpin causation in scientific writing. The source of data is the 2million-word Halmstad Biomedical Corpus constructed from 589 on-line researcharticles published since 1997. These articles were sampled in accordance with astandard library classification system across the broad spectrum of the biomedicalresearch literature. On the basis of lexical grammatical patterns identified in thecorpus, a total of five functional sub-types of causation are put forward. The localgrammar itself is a description of these sub-types based on the Hallidayian notion ofsystem along the syntagm coupled with the identification of the paradigmatic contentsof these systems as a closed set of 37 semantic categories specific to the biomedicaldomain. A preliminary evaluation of the grammar is then offered in terms of handparsingexperiments using a test corpus. Finally potential NLP applications of thegrammar are described in terms of on-line information extraction, ontology buildingand text summary.

    Abstract [en]

This article reports on a survey of Swedish EFL teachers’ attitudes towards, and dependence on, ELT coursebook packages in the light of recent researchinto digital literacy. The results showed that while ICT is making massiveinroads into language classrooms in technologically advantaged countrieslike Sweden, the coursebook package still has its place assured amongtrainee teachers, at least for the immediate future. The current generationof ‘digital native’ pre-service teachers still looks to coursebook packagesto structure lessons during teaching practice and as a means of providingextended reading practice in the L2. Their more experienced in-servicecolleagues are, however, increasingly abandoning the coursebook in favour offreestanding digital resources. Practising teachers in the survey increasinglysaw coursebooks in contingency terms and as a ‘fall-back’ position. Finally, the article considers the desirability of a more fundamental abandonment ofthe coursebook in favour of digital tools and resources in the EFL classroom.

Social media as an alternative to Moodle in EFL teaching practice forums2015In: Critical CALL – Proceedings of the 2015 EUROCALL Conference, Padova, Italy / [ed] Francesca Helm, Linda Bradley, Marta Guarda, Sylvie Thouësny., Research-publishing.net, 2015, p. 9-15Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reports on the preferences among a group of pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher trainees for social media rather than Moodle, an institutional Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), as a forum for support during a recent five week teaching practice in southern Sweden. The teacher trainees responded to a questionnaire relating to preferences for their own Facebook group as opposed to the Moodle forum set up specifically by the course tutor for the purpose of sharing observations and discussing lesson planning, aspects of reflective practice and resources while on teaching practice. Their reflections shed interesting light on the importance of student EFL teacher ownership and ‘student centricity’ in the learning space. These concepts emerge from a consideration of the learning space at the intersection of pedagogical, technological and content knowledge and the nature of forum discussions when faced with the alternative between social media and institutionalized learning platforms under the direction of teacher trainers and course managers.

Remote tutoring of pre-service EFL teachers using iPads2018In: ELT Journal, ISSN 0951-0893, E-ISSN 1477-4526, Vol. 72, no 4, p. 353-364Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With the availability of portable and relatively inexpensive audiovideo recording devices in the form of iPads and other mobile technologies in combination with increasing bandwidth, the remote observation and training of pre-service EFL student teachers without the physical presence of a tutor in the classroom is now a viable proposition. This paper reports on a novel initiative to provide remote feedback to a group of primary EFL pre-service teachers on teaching practice placement in Africa from a tutor based in Sweden via iPad minis and the training institution’s Moodle virtual learning environment. The feedback was assessed in relation to the Cambridge English Teaching Framework. Results suggest that the combination of recorded audiovideo material during the pre-service teachers’ teaching practice and Moodle feedback from the remote tutor can provide a valuable basis for tutorial support, formative assessment, and reflection for student EFL teachers on teaching practice.

    Abstract [en]

This paper presents the outcomes of a short intercultural exchangeproject involving pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher trainingestablishments in Sweden and Israel. The project comprised three online meetingsrecorded in Zoom in which student teachers gave feedback on each other’s projectassignments involving lesson planning and the use of spoken English in theclassroom. The sessions were moderated by a highly experienced teacher trainerwith contributions from other teacher trainers in the institutions involved. Withrestrictions imposed on physical meetings and student mobility by the Covid-19pandemic, the exchange helped to shed light on a number of perennial issues inEnglish language teaching methodology and offers a feasible model for futuresustainable virtual exchanges in EFL teacher training.

    Abstract [en]

his paper reports on the evaluation of student teacher information and communications technology (ICT) projects in English language didactics in accordance with recently proposed frameworks of digital literacy in both language-teaching and wider working and educational contexts (Dudeney, Hockly, & Pegrum, forthcoming; Hockly, 2012; Pegrum, 2011). The challenge for teachers, regardless of what stage they are at in their careers, is to be able to operationalize in Hockly’s (2012) terms the notion of digital literacy in the foreign language classroom while at the same time encorporating these concerns into a task-based framework in which communication is balanced with a focus on linguistic form. Students in their second term of studies in language didactics were given the task of creating an ICT-based project in English, encorporating both internet and classroom-based inquiry activities aimed at either lower or upper secondary levels in the Swedish school system. The project brief given to the student teachers more VSHFL¿FDOO\DGGUHVVHGWKHLUDELOLW\WRSODQDQGRUJDQL]HDVHWRIOHDUQLQJDFWLYLWLHVDURXQGan extended webquest in addition to demonstrating the procedural usage of a wide range of ICT tools such as wikis, blogs, podcasts, etc. in English language teaching (ELT). The four areas of language-, information-, connection-, and re-design-based digital literacies, as proposed by Pegrum (2011), form the basis for the evaluation of the projects.

Stå i bakgrunden eller ta plats?: En analys av manlig och kvinnlig retorik i två livsstilsmagasin2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

How to think about preschool children with no knowledge of Swedish and low levels of motivation to learn the new language2023Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

At the heart of democracy is being able to be a part of the society at large which requires sharing the dominant language. In recent years, we have lectured on language learning and specifically second language learning and multilingualism for teachers in Sweden, from Malmö in the south to Umeå in the north. While teachers at all levels need to have knowledge of second language acquisition and learning it becomes apparent in discussions that teachers often meet children who are not motivated to learn Swedish. As a result, the children have not acquired the language used in, for instance the preschool curriculum, nor do they have the necessary skills in Swedish to acquire new knowledge when they start school.

This means that the research we present to our teacher students and to practicing teachers is relevant to language learning but cannot fully address the challenges faced by the profession. Further knowledge and research are needed on how to work with Swedish as a second language, such as in the preschool context where 25% of children have another language besides Swedish as their first language (SCB, 2021) and, crucially, their motivation to learn the language is low. Language proficiency in preschool predicts subsequent grades in school in for instance math and reading (Murphy et al., 2016; Pace et al., 2019). Therefore, knowledge about how to motivate children (and parents) is a prerequisite for making a linguistic intervention so that children's Swedish skills are sufficient to absorb the education in preschool and later knowledge acquisition in school which is important for being a part of the society at large.

We will present previous studies of motivation for language learning (Lamb et al., 2021) and our preliminary data from questionnaires and interviews with personnel in preschools and adult learners of Swedish as a second language focusing on motivation to learn the language. Against this background, we will introduce our ideas of “language learning motivation interventions” (LLMI) in school settings. We will claim that it is crucial for teachers to have a better grasp of how to motivate learning Swedish. This understanding can result in the inclusion of children and students in school and the society on equal bases for learning and thus for democracy in their current setting but also in future settings.

An ERP study of the relationship between verb semantics and events2016In: The 8th Annual Meeting of the Society for the Neurobiology of Language, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Languages differ in how events are described, but little is known about how semantics interacts with online event processing. This study targets this question examining placement events in Swedish. Swedish has three obligatory placement verbs for events where objects have support from below: sätta ’set’, ställa ’stand’, and lägga ’lay’. Swedish lacks a superordinate general term like English put (Gullberg & Burenhult, 2011). For every placement event the verb choice depends on object properties, and the direction of the object’s extension from the ground. We use event-related potentials (ERPs) and appropriateness ratings of verb usage to investigate the interaction between verb semantics and event properties. Typically violations of semantic congruency positively affect the amplitude of the N400 (Kutas & Hillyard, 1980). Studies also report a centro-parietal positivity (P600) when real-world knowledge is violated and verbs are incongruous to preceding contexts (Kuperberg, 2007, for a review). Previous ERP studies of visually presented images or movies of actions and events have reported an N400 followed by a P600 when the function of an object is violated (e.g., using a screwdriver as a key, Bach, et al., 2009; Balconi & Caldiroli, 2011).

Method: Native speakers (N = 24, 18-35 years) watched still images of placement events followed by sentences visually presented word by word. Sentences described the depicted events while ERPs were recorded and time-locked to the placement verbs. Participants also did an appropriateness rating offline. Object properties (Base/Without base), symmetry (Sym/Asym), and orientation from the ground (Vertical/Horizontal) were varied and sentences with the three different placement verbs were combined with each image in a cross-subject design.

Results: Base was important for appropriateness ratings of verb usage with symmetric objects while orientation was important for asymmetric objects. In contrast, there were no ERP effects to base (Base/Without) for symmetric objects. Asymmetric-base objects showed increased N400s and P600s with verbs incongruent with the depicted events (orientation, e.g., ‘lay’ with vertical glass). Asymmetric-Without base elicited an increased P600 when verbs were incongruent to depicted events when horizontally oriented (e.g., ‘set’ with horizontal avocado), but an increased N400 when verbs were incongruent to the atypical vertical placement of the objects (e.g., ‘lay’ with a vertical avocado).

Discussion: Results showed an increased amplitude of both ERP effects (N400/P600) when placement verbs were incongruent with typical placement scenarios of objects that in the real-world are placed vertically or horizontally (Asymmetric-Base, e.g., a candle; cf. Bach et al., 2009). However, for objects without a base the anterior negativity was increased with a mismatch between the verb and the presented images (the depicted events), while the P600 increased for mismatches between the verb and typical real-world events. These results suggest the anterior N400 and the P600 indeed index different relationships with event processing as previously suggested for images (Sitnikova, et al., 2008). Our results agree with previous studies suggesting that the processing of verb meaning in language cannot be separated from knowledge of object handling in the real world (cf., Van Berkum, et al., 2008).

Teaching English to newly arrived immigrant pupils: A qualitative case study about teachers' experiences at a Swedish secondary school2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative case study examines teachers’ perspectives on receiving and teaching newly arrived immigrant pupils. Previous research and the Swedish National Agency for Education have shown that immigrant pupils have a tendency to fail their education, and some researchers also implied that these children fail their English education. The aim of this essay has been to investigate how English teachers at a secondary school in southern Sweden deal with the growing number of newly arrived immigrants in their classes. The collected data is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with three teachers at a secondary school in Sweden. The results indicate that the teachers considered that it was challenging to receive and teach newly arrived immigrant pupils. They do not have enough information on how they should incorporate these children into subject planning and ongoing pedagogical initiatives. Moreover, the data also show that the participants expressed the fact that the pupils often had a low level of English proficiency, and that they occasionally did not obtain a grade in English. The pupils’ low English level connected with their ongoing Swedish acquisition made it difficult for the teachers to adapt their teaching. The Results also implied that many newly arrived pupils used English as a communication language, which may have a positive impact on their learning.

Hur lär man barn att läsa?: En jämförelse mellan erfarna och nyutexaminerade lärares arbetssätt2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Shakespearean Stahr: Using Genette’s Theory of Intertextuality to Compare The Last Tycoon to Shakespeare’s Tragedies2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay uses Gerard Genette’s theory of intertextuality – in particular, architextuality - in order to establish the connection between Shakespearean tragedies and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last novel, The Last Tycoon. The essay relies mainly on known Shakespeare critic A.C Bradley and the categories he uses in order to establish what makes a Shakespearean tragedy a Shakespearean tragedy. This framework will then be used to further elaborate upon the architextual connection between Shakespeare and Fitzgerald. The essay also compares the characters from The Last Tycoon directly to characters from Shakespeare’s tragedies in order to further show the intertextual connections. For example, Fitzgerald's main character Monroe Stahr is compared to Julius Caesar, from Shakespeare's play of the same name, while the antagonist Mr Brady is compared to both Cassius from the previously mentioned Julius Caesar, as well as Iago from Othello

"Vad betyder zombie jag vet inte": Andraspråkselevers epistemiska positioneringar i samtal 2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study examines if and how the use of writing process and peer review can be beneficial to the text quality when writing a short essay in a foreign language. The study focuses on a group of Swedish high school students, 17 and 18 years of age, studying their second foreign language, German, with no prior experience of working with peer review in any subject. To investigate the efficiency of the use of writing process and peer review, four research questions were formulated:

1   To what extent does peer review lead to an improvement of the text quality?

         a)  What comments to the texts do the students give during the group discussion?

         b)  What do the students change in their own text after the group discussion?

         c)  What are the students’ attitudes toward the work with peer review?

In order to understand how the students worked with the comments and how it affected the text quality, the conversations were compared with the actual changes made between the two text versions. The comments were mostly very polite. Even when the students criticized, they tried to give feedback very gently. All texts were improved after the peer review, although most of the errors from the first draft were still present in the second version. After the writing of the second draft, the students took a survey, where they were able to express their views on various aspects of the project. The students were mostly positive to this way of working with texts, although some of them found that they did not know enough German yet. Nevertheless, most of them wanted to try it again, to see their own progress.

Metaphor in writing: A study on metaphor usage in the online sports sections of two British newspapers2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study seeks to investigate the use of metaphors in the sports section of two British newspapers; a broadsheet, The Telegraph, and a tabloid, The Mirror, and locate whether there are any differences between them in terms of metaphor usage. To accomplish this, a total number of twenty sports articles written by four different journalists – two from each newspaper – were analyzed for both conventional and novel metaphors. In order to properly locate and identify metaphors, a method known as MIP (Metaphor Identification Procedure) was used in coordination with the Macmillan Online Dictionary as well as the Oxford English Dictionary in order to deduce the conventionality of the investigated metaphors. The yielded results then showed that both newspapers were very similar in their use of both conventional and novel metaphors, with The Telegraph journalists being slightly more inclined to use novel metaphorical expressions than their colleagues from The Mirror.

Ord och bild i samspel: En studie av sex högstadieelevers textstrategier vid kunskapsredovisning2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Inställning till att lära svenska i Finland2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
