Jag tillhör en muslimsk familj men jag är inte religiös: Några ungdomars förändrade syn på sin religion i Sverige2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

It is not surprising that the massive Syrian and Afghanistan immigration three years ago, has changed their view towards Islam rules in their new identity creating. But what has been changed? That was my first question in this essay and the answers I got was rules concerned alcohol, prayer, mosque visits and food rules. All this rules requires someone to influence them to take a stand, which lead us to the next question, about how hegemony was exhibited as a factor in how my respondents answered the first question. The theory of hegemony was the analysis instrument of this study and gave me a hypothesis that hegemony probably had something to do with the change of rules, and it had. All these things that I mentioned as changed rules in their new land demands a personal asset and to be legitimized by someone who represents the hegemony.  In order for the hegemony to continue it has to be anonymous and lead for example friends or teachers. It is visible how my respondents talked about matters that had to do with how the changes where in their common sense, where probably hegemony has the strongest attachment, but also how they thought that they made own choices, was also the choice that the hegemony had done before them. Although I took into account the need to be a part of a group, here it showed how the Muslims was included in a group that only had premises from hegemony standard points. The answers for my result was given to me by six secondary school students by semi structured interviews.

Är homosexualitet legitimt inom islam?: En argumentationsanalys av nytolkningar och traditionella rättstolkningar inom islam2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine new interpretations of homosexuality in Islam based on Scott Kugle’s book “Homosexuality in Islam” and the documentary “A Jihad for love” by Parvez Sharma. Through a theological perspective, a critical analysis is performed in order to find new interpretations and compare them with each other and with the Islamic legal tradition. Argumentative analysis is also used for both the book and the documentary for this essay.     Both Kugle and Sharma use new interpretations and arguments about love to find space for homosexuality in Islam. They use a Muslim language to have relevance with their discussions to Muslim readers and viewers. It is obvious that Sharma is aware of the scenes and arguments he chose to show in the documentary. Kugle focuses on unclear verses in the Qur’an, which contribute to that he could find possibilities to interpret homosexuals in the verses to fulfill his purpose and open up a topic for discussion. Their discussion show what Muslim homosexuals have to struggle with and with their new interpretations they both discover ways to find reconciliation between Islam and people’s sexual orientation by questioning the normative society.

”Fotbollen är en del av min identitet”: En kvalitativ studie av menings – och identitetsskapande inom svenska supporterkulturen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to illustrate a modern phenomenon, the Olympic Games, by applying the ideas of Mircea Eliade concerning space, time and myth. This literature study is mainly divided in two parts, one descriptive and one analytic. In the first part Eliade’s ideas and some criticism, which has been pointed against his theoretical approaches as well as his character, are presented. In the second part an analysis is carried out, based on the previously presented ideas and elements essential for the Olympics; the idea of the Olympics, the place, the ceremonies, the competition and the concept of individual idolism.

I have discussed what seems like gnostic tendencies in Eliade’s ideas, in the sense that both Eliade’s ideas and the concept of Gnosticism argue that knowledge is a necessary condition for salvation, as well as the fact that Eliade and his ideas have not always a pro-Christian approach. I have also shown that incoherency exists in his theoretical approach concerning the manifestation of the sacred.

I have found that Mircea Eliade’s ideas, with some difficulties, very well can reflect a modern phenomenon such as the Olympic Games. I have also put forth the idea of translating Eliade’s conception of axis mundi into an ideological landscape; the Olympic values become an analogy to axis mundi. Furthermore, I have also shown that modern man in different ways desires to be close to the sacred, and how this fact to some extent may explain people’s devotion to and worship of sport heroes, and thus why not only athletes but also billions of spectators are inclined to attend the Olympics. Finally, I show that, according to Eliade’s ideas, the Olympics might facilitate the process of creating modern myths.

Det kvinnan fruktar mest hos mannen är hans tystnad medan det mannen fruktar mest hos kvinnan är alla hennes ord: En studie av kvinnligt maktanspråk inom den isländska sagalitteraturen2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My aim in this essay is to identify and explain the claims to power that women possessed and were able to wield over other individuals by examining women as a instigators of violence in the Icelandic saga literature. I sought to build upon the previous research on women's representation in the saga literature by further identifying and explaining the power of women. By using qualitative narrative analysis with an approach closely related to content analysis, I searched six Icelandic sagas of different character and featured the identified intrigues in a summary manner. The questions referred to the material are:

    - Which expressions show that women's actions are a founding reason for men to engage in violence can be found in the material?

    - How do the female actors exercise power in Old Norse literature?

In the light of works by Margaret Clunies Ross, Gro Steinlands, Birgit Sawyers and Jóhanna Katrín Fridriksdottirs and descriptions of women in the Viking Age context with the Norse religion combined with the theoretical starting points from John RP French, Bertram Raven and Sylvia Walby I have answered the questions of the study. The female characters’ claims to power found in the literature were found to be verbally based, in accordance with previous research, and therefore found in social interactions with other individuals.

The result shows that women’s power is established in five different power bases: reward, coercive, legitimate, reference and expertise, where coercion and expertise were the most prominent and frequently reproduced forms of power in the material. The descriptions of the woman's claims to power can demonstrate (1) that the woman had a powerful position in the Viking Age context, (2) highlighted as a cause of disorder which man must sort out - and then appears as the sovereign, (3) a Christian tendency and function as propaganda against paganism. But one of the most interesting and important aspects that this study highlights is that women's actions can be seen as destructive as they are a leading cause of violence in many cases, but the women do not always do this in pure malice, although malice may be present in some intrigue. Several women seem to have a constructive motive as they often want the family to escape the shame and instead perform great deeds which generate honor - which is the moral system that is found in paganism. By understanding women's motives in this way, one can understand that they want to achieve good even if it sometimes requires violent actions. These actions can also be viewed differently than in our modern societies which are characterized by a different mentality towards violence than was the case in Viking society.

Den tidlösa sufismen: Om philosophia perennis föreställningar om sufism och islam2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Popular culture is a phenomenon of growing importance in the society today. Children and teenagers are increasingly using popular culture in their everyday life to reflect and answer questions about their identities and the meaning of life. Swedish primary and upper secondary schools are expected to prepare their students for adulthood and to provide them with tools to explain understand and problematize contemporary society. From this perspective it is relevant to question whether the schools achieve this and whether the instruction given there represents the contemporary society. For the purpose of knowing more about how popular culture is perceived and dealt with in the Swedish education system, this study examines how eight textbooks in Religious Education (RE) and the national curriculum for upper secondary school discuss and treat popular culture.  The study focuses on when and in what ways the textbooks mention popular culture and if the curriculum provides any supportive base for including popular culture in religious education. The textual analysis of the RE textbooks illustrates that popular culture is seldom mentioned in the books and rarely discussed or reflected upon. The most common instances of popular culture in the textbooks are small references outside of the main text. The authors of the textbooks have thus not integrated thorough discussion about popular culture but rather added in some popular cultured references where they thought it would fit in the texts. With regard to the national curriculum for Religious Education, there is some recognition of how to use and discuss popular culture and its importance for students is acknowledged. However, this recognition is only explained in the comments to the curriculum and not in the document itself.   The apparent lack of popular culture in RE textbooks is in this study discussed from the perspective of power relations and popular culture perceived as a culture form with low status. As historians have asserted, cultural forms that have historically been called and perceived as low culture have also been used as objects for the exercise of power. While popular culture today has taken over functions that traditionally belong to the established religions, and while in some cases popular culture can be perceived as a form of religion, popular culture is still commonly viewed as a lower form of culture for the masses and consequently a cultural form with lower status.  This exercise of power has usually been downward in the social hierarchy, from middle class towards working class, to today’s groups of adults towards youth. It may be this trend that emerges when this study shows the lack of popular culture in RE textbooks. It is adults who write the curriculum, it is adults who write the textbooks and it is adults who teach in schools. Popular culture is said to belong to the young and therefore it does not have sufficiently high status to be brought in to the classroom.

Oförglömliga karaktärer: En analys av karaktärsskildringar i fornnordiska myter och filmer om superhjältar2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

By conducting a text analysis this study analyzes possible similarities in the portrayal of story characters between historical Norse myths and contemporary film productions. The chosen historical texts are two stories from Norse mythology which render a myth about Thor and a giant named Hrunge as well as the myth Trymskvädet. The selected movies are two of the comic company Marvel’s productions about super heroes – Thor and The Avengers. Different categories that this study compares are how the characters are defined by their possessions or artefacts, the actions and the choices which the characters make, and also how their relations, roles and origins are being portrayed. As the result of study shows, there are some similarities between the historical texts and the movies with regard to how the stories portray the characters.

According to cognitive theories, a story becomes more memorable if there is a balance between what readers intuitively expect and does not expect from the story while it unfolds in texts or multimedia productions. The reason for these similarities between textual and visual material created in different times may not only be that historical texts serve as the inspirational base for contemporary productions, but also relates to how myths have some unforgettable characters by striking a balance between intuitiveness and counter-intuitiveness features, and that the movies use character portrayals with a similar balance between the features.

Judge not, that ye be not judged: En kvantitativ, retorikanalys av Westboro Baptist Church syn på människan i egenpublicerat material2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this exam paper I seek a deeper understanding of how the Westboro Baptist Church views human life and how the Westboro Baptist Church tries to convince the world through their rhetoric. The paper is based on open letters by the church which have been published on their website. In the letters Westboro Baptist Church write about, what they think, are the most sinful parts of a human’s life, and they give guidelines as to how people should correct their habits and live a good Christian life. These letters of correction are sent out to people in the social arena, both big and small.

The goal of the paper is to give a deeper understanding of how Westboro Baptist Church can keep their congregation alive through its rhetoric, and survive when the whole world is against them. With the help of Peter Berger’s theory of nomos and the three basic focal points of classical rhetorical analysis, this exam aims to give a better picture of how a closely knit group can remain functional when the whole world hates them.

Nyreformationens otroshjälte och Jesus: Om bakgrunden till, jesusbilden i och framgången för ”Bibelns lära om Kristus”, författad av Viktor Rydberg 18622017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to investigate the contemporary context in which Bibelns lära om Kristus, authored by Viktor Rydberg in 1862, was written and received. By claiming the human nature of Christ, he evoked massive response. By performing a literal study, I have examined the 19th century society in Sweden; infrastructural alteration, the origin and spread of popular movements such as revivalism, liberalism and Enlightenment, to inquire in what way (if at all) Rydberg is to be considered influenced by their conceptions. The essay emanates from the assumption that the Lutheran reformation in the late 19th century experienced a revival in Sweden. This revival is to be called the new reformation. In my result and reflection, I have come to the conclusion that Viktor Rydberg did not in fact criticize his contemporary church to annihilate it. He was, apart from inspired by the liberal thought of individual, religious and political freedom, simply trying to alter it. The cause for his success is in this essay claimed to be three: the fact that he was the “perfect combination” of radical theology and political liberalism; that he played the role as a spiritual guide; and finally, that he, in the light of his earlier authorship, was by the Swedish nation perceived as a trustworthy authority.

Blood-Suckers!: the concepts revisionist and anti-revisionist mythology introduced by the vampire- and werewolf-tetralogy Underworld (2003-2012)2014In: Journal of Religion and Film, ISSN 1092-1311, E-ISSN 1092-1311, Vol. 18, no 2, p. 9-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

By undertaking a structuralist influenced analysis of the vampire- and werewolf-tetralogy Underworld the author argues for the usefulness of the concept “revisionist mythology” and “anti-revisionist mythology” in the study of the history of religion in general and in the study of popular mythology in specific. These concepts point to dramaturgical, but also ethical and ideological, changes within the world of commercial pop-mythological artefacts. The article focuses on certain aesthetic aspects of the tetralogy that unveil counter-cultural traits that might be labelled socialist. The article ends with speculations about the causes for the strong revisionistic and anti-revisionistic trends that are taking place in contemporary, popular mythological subcultures.

    Abstract [en]

The conditions for the creation, distribution and reception of myths have changed drastically during the late modern era. Do myths exist at all in the contemporary, Western societies? If so, where are they and what do we then mean by “myth”? The article is a sketchy overview of different areas where myths might be found, and the author simultaneous tries to discuss relevant definitions of myth. From the conceptualization of myth in the Enlightenment and Romantic era the article moves on to discuss the reception of mythology in New Age spirituality, the invention of Nationalist mythologies and the issue of myths in the products of the Culture industry and commerce. The main focus is on the debatable issue wither or not the liberal, “post-politic” discourse of contemporary Westerns democracies – a discourse often presented as drained of any fantastic rhetoric and only concerned with practical, instrumental decisions – could be said to contain myths.

    Abstract [en]

For the last decades, Bruce Lincoln has been a leading scholar within the field of the history of religions. His philological skills, historical accuracy and innovations on a concrete "low-theoretical" level as well as his critical approach toward theology and discourse of the religious elites and overall ethical commitment has been widely estimated. This review article aims to uncover some of the prerequisites for the ideology criticism that has been the hallmark of Lincoln's work and to discuss some alternative tracks to continue that tradition of scholarship.

    Abstract [en]

Today ‘humanistic’ and ‘humanities’ are terms rarely used in discussions on methodology and epistemology within the study/history of religions. This article laments this state of affair and reminds the readers of same basic advantages of a humanistic study of religions in comparison to chiefly social scientific approaches to religion and culture. After an initial philosophical argument on the implications of ‘humanistic’, the article touches upon the significance of historical failures, utopianism, empathy and ‘the orectic’. These discussions take place against an analysis of the mythology and ritual life of the 19th century, American, socialist order The Knight of Labor.

Tal om terror: Hur muslimer beskrivs av det indiska partiet Bharatiya Janata Party mellan 2008-20122013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sufismens mångsidighet: En forskningsöversikt2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Sufism is explained in textbooks for high school students in the subject religious studies 1 and 2. To do this I have also summarized research on Sufism in Sweden. This thesis is based on three questions: What does recent science says about the purpose of sufism, its proliferation and its practice in Sweden and globally. Is the description of sufism multifaceted or not? What do the textbooks say about sufism? Do textbooks give a multifaceted picture of sufism, or is it unilateral? The results show that Sufism is more multifaceted and deeper and plays a bigger role than is apparent in religious books for high school, although even textbooks show a variegated picture of Sufism. Postcolonial theory and the orientalism theory presented by Edward Said are used in this thesis.

Filmers visualisering av stereotyper: Islam ur ett västerländskt perspektiv2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines on what kind of Muslim stereotypes exist in entertainment movies which are being produced in the West and particularly the United States. First, the focus will be on explaining the concept of stereotypes and Islamophobia and what role the media has in the movies' production of its contents. The incident at the World Trade Center will also be discussed briefly. By using semiotic and narrative analyses the essay investigates if a stereotyped image is being used about Muslims and how Muslim main characters that have the role of being protagonists, are visualized in entertainment movies. The material that is included in the empirical analysis consists of three selected movies. The purpose of this essay is to create a broader understanding on how stereotypes of Islam and Muslims are being used within the entertainment industry with particular focus on movies that are produced in the West.

The results in this paper show that stereotypes of Islam and Muslims lives on in the 21st century movies and that Muslims who are characterized as protagonists are illustrated with traits and appearance that reminiscent of the West. However, Islam and Muslims is not a frequent content in movies produced in USA.

Kan tro och vetande förenas i en NutidsTeologi?: Diskussion utifrån Nathan Söderblom, Paul Tillich, Raimundo Panikkar och Ian G. Barbour m.fl.2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Ulf Ekmans konversion till Katolska kyrkan i svensk dagspress: Diskussion utifrån ett diskursanalytiskt perspektiv2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the reasons a religious minority leader has to convert to a larger religious group and how the leader chooses to communicate this event in certain daily press. In March 2014 the leader and founder of the Christian and charismatic movement “Livets Ord” (Words of Life), Ulf Ekman, announced his decision converting to the Roman Catholic Church after a 10 year long process of thinking. The communications of Ekman’s linguistic language in the articles are discussed through two discourse analyzing perspective, Laclau & Mouffe’s and Fairclough’s. Lewis Rambo’s theory about the process of conversion is compared with Ekman’s statement in the daily press.

According to Ekman, his reasons for leaving “Word of Life” in favor for the Roman Catholic church is how he, in RCC, sees the concrete, visible aspect of ”the Church”. In plenty of his sayings he mentions RCC’s sacramental dimension, its authentic authority and moral superiority. These opinions were depicted in the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter. In the Christian newspaper Dagen Ekman says that he sees the Roman Catholic Church as ”the oldest church” which, according to him, was another reason for his conversion. Ekman also says that he feels as if the Lord urged him to this conversion because of how God’s order now is broken and that the biblical knowledge and those dogmas that the Roman Catholic Church is holding as true, is a step in the right direction for finding unity in ”the body of Christ”. In another Swedish Christian newspaper, Världen idag, Ekman expresses the need for a ”ministry” in Sweden, which also can be explained as a reason for his conversion. Their social pathos, the presence of charismatic Catholics around the world, the strongly established theology, the rich masses, the missionaries, and the Roman Catholic Church as an ethical church is said to be another reasons for his conversion in Världen idag. The communication of Ekmans conversion in the daily press keeps pretty well in line with Rambo’s seven descriptive phases towards conversion. The discourse analysis shows that ”the Church”, according to Ekman, can get a significance that will be viewed as some sort of ethos when it’s represents a constructed identity which remains unclear. The discourse analysis also shows that Ekman’s sayings tend to ”silence” previous criticism he issued towards the Roman Catholic Church. Ekman sometimes cites absolute truths. His statements are also intertextually anchored.

Donald Trump: A fascist president with Christian support?2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Donald Trump chocked the world when he decided to run for president of the United States of America, and won. This study examines if Donald Trump may be placed on a fascist scale based on his statements in six speeches; and how the Christian support, that he received, may be explained. The speeches have been analysed based on a qualitative text analysis and been categorized in to five categories of fascism.

The Christian support may be explained by common values; Lakoff’s Strict Father morality, in combination with fear. The fear for what may happen to the U.S. with Hillary Clinton as president has a big impact on why conservative Christians voted for Donald Trump. The conclusion of this study is that Donald Trump can be classified as a semi-fascist as he partly fulfils the fascist criteria this study presents.

    Abstract [sv]

IS mobilisation av följare och framtida visioner: En diskursanalys av Islamiska Statens propagandamagasin Dabiq Magazine2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to find out what methods the Islamic State are using in

order to mobilize their followers and strengthen the organization. The purpose of this

essay has also been to find out what the dreams and visions the Islamic state has for the

future. From a discourse analytical approach, the Islamic State propaganda newspaper

Dabiq Magazine has been analyzed based on how well the material is consistent with

Lincoln’s theories on cultural identity and Jameson’s theory on historical identities and

myths. The results showed the Islamic state's conscious strategy of portraying itself as

the religion’s only true interpreter and that religion holds a central domain of the

collective identity as the Islamic State intends to create for the organization. The

analysis also shows the Islamic state's dreams and visions for the future that are

primarily manifested by the organization's power ambitions but also by apocalyptic

references to prophecies from holy scriptures in the Quran.

Var i helvetet tog Satan vägen?: En studie om svenska pingstvänners syn på religiös ondska2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative research study has been to investigate seven young adult Pentecostals conceptions about religious evil, that is Satan, demons and hell. The purpose has also been to analyze how these conceptualizations are formed. The method that has been used in this study is individual semi-structured interviews. The result of the study show that conceptions of Satan, demons and hell are strong in most of the individuals’ life but one. Berger & Luckmanns theories of socialization has been applied to the results and the discussion shows that conceptions about religious evil are formed in the primary socialization or the secondary socialization if the person goes through the process of alternation. Bultmanns argument that modern man can’t accept the world view that is presented in The New Testament has also been discussed and the discussion reveals that modern day people can believe in the New Testament worldview.

Puritanismens dygdetik: En jämförande studie mellan Max Webers dygdteori och dygderna i John Bunyans bok Pilgrim´s Progress2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to find the virtue ethics John Bunyan presents in Pilgrim´s Progress part 1, compared with the virtues Max Weber presents, and then try Weber´s theory on the empirical data, Pilgrim´s Progress. When I compare the virtues in Weber´s theory with the virtues in Pilgrim´s Progress, I interpret Weber´s theory as limited. From Weber´s theory emerges the puritan virtues: fulfillment of duty, struggle, self-control and live simply. He also mentions gratitude to God and helpfulness to other people, but this is shown through work in the society. These virtues can also be found in Pilgrim´s Progress. The fulfillment of duty in Weber´s theory is mainly focused on work-ethic, while I interpret the fulfillment of duty in Pilgrim´s Progress more focused on the struggle with the Belief in God. The virtues self-control and to live simply is clearly seen in both sources, which strengthens this part of Weber´s theory. The most interesting thing is that I found several virtues in Pilgrim´s Progress, which Weber did not attributed any significant. These are: forgiveness, help, spiritual communion, and gratitude to God.

En undersökning om små barns och ungdomars Gudsbild2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

    Abstract [en]

This study investigates in what respects Celtic mythology influenced J. R. R. Tolkien when writing the sagas incorporated in the mythopoeic compilation of The Silmarillion. Through narrative and comparative analysis, stories from the Irish prose collection Lebor Gabála Érenn, as well as the Welsh medieval manuscript Mabinogion, are collated to the tales of The Silmarillion in order to illuminate possible influences. The survey showed that even though Tolkien expressed a certain distaste for everything Celtic, several elements of Irish and Welsh mythology are indeed visible in his works.

De gamla gudarnas viskningar: En kvalitativ textanalys på serietidningen Northlanders2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is an analysis of Brian Wood's Viking epic Northlanders, published by Vertigo/DC between the years of 2007-2012. The aim is to identify how Old Norse faith and Christianity are portrayed. This is done by using the theory of representation as developed by Stuart Hall and putting them into the historical context of a postmodern, secular western world of thought. The research shows a wide variety of religiosity in both Norse and Christian characters. Some common trends have been identified though, and these are a general appreciation of physical strength within the Norse religion and a general tendency in Norse religion to explain natural phenomena and to have fatalistic leanings while Christianity rather seeks to offer comfort in times of need. The results also show that one of the greater roles Christianity plays in Northlanders is contributing to, or sometimes forcing a societal change, while the practitioners of the Norse faith tend to lean toward stability. There is also a tendency to present the northerners as outcasts, while the Christian counterparts are part of an establishment.
