    Abstract [en]

This research report focuses on the users of e-government in a social science perspective. Our aim is to study how different social groups, registered at the Swedish Public Employment Service, relate to the internet, the agency and the services offered on its website (www.ams.se).

The field of e-government research is dominated by studies that centre attention on the supply side (videlicet research investigating the entrance of IT in organizations and the implications that new technology have to these), while usercentred research (demand side) is still scarce. Our study, focusing on how citizens relate to the internet in general and e-government in particular, therefore helps to bridge a knowledge gap within the field.

Our survey is based on a questionnaire sent to 2 000 randomly selected persons, all registered at the Swedish Public Employment Service. Of these, 762 job seekers responded, which gives us a frequency rate of 40 percent. The questions asked were related to the job seekers’ usage of and attitudes towards the internet in general and the agency’s webpage in particular, but also to their attitudes to the Swedish Public Employment Service.

The main results show that social factors, particularly education, play a major role for the job seekers’ ability to use the web based services offered by the agency. People with a lower educational level are less inclined to use the agency’s website, and at the same time they experience the site as more complicated to use. We also found a strong link between the relations to the internet (access, usage, experience and attitudes) and the relations to the agency’s website. Those with advantaged internet relations – mostly well educated people, white collars and people living in bigger cities – also use the agency’s website more diligently and tend to have more positive attitudes towards it (and vice versa). Thus, its necessary to talk in terms of digitally well equipped and less well equipped groups.

The unequal relations to the internet in general and the agency’s website in particular not only indicate that e-government is more suitable for the digitally well equipped, but that it in fact exclude those with less digital resources. This new kind of exclusion has great implications for the job seekers’ possibilities to enter the labour market, and to act their role as citizens. If e government also means a reformation of the citizen role – in the sense of increased individual responsibility towards the government - not bridging the digital divide will carry even more exclusion to those that’s already excluded.

Olika publiker, olika livsstilar: Om idrott, kultur och regional utveckling2008Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

New regionalism: the cases of NAFTA and MERCOSUR: How can regional co-operation be explained?2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The end of the Cold War crucially changed the way in which the world is organised and brought an end to what is referred to as the “old” regionalism. A trend towards some form of “new” regionalism has thus been observed during the 1990s. The objective of this thesis is therefore, firstly, to outline the characteristics of the new regionalism in order to examine to what extent the phenomenon is reflected in the reality of regional organisations, and, secondly, to establish which model of co-operation the same organisations can be said to follow. Following this idea, a comparative case study is performed with the selected cases of NAFTA and MERCOSUR, on which a theoretical model for analysis is applied in order to establish whether theories of International Relations, in this case Liberalism and Realism, can explain the emergence and existence of both organisations.

Results show that NAFTA is less inclined to show signs of the trend towards the new regionalism than MERCOSUR does, and that NAFTA to a larger extent follows a realist model of co-operation, while MERCOSUR follows a more liberal model of co-operation.

One committee - two institutions?: The Committee of European Affairs in Sweden and Denmark2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In order to have some say and to scrutinise the government all member states of the EU today has established an institution within their national parliaments, the Committee of European Affairs. This institution, however, has very different rights and regulations depending on the country it is established in. This study uses two rather similar countries, Sweden and Denmark, and investigates what differences and similarities the two committees show.

By constructing a comparative case study of four units of analysis, the governments and committees of European Affairs in Sweden and Denmark, the formal and informal power relationship between government and committee in each country were studied in order to determine similarities and differences and whether the committee had an impact on the governments’ EU policies. Further they were compared, assessing whether the Danish Committee of European Affairs was more powerful than its Swedish counterpart because of its legal basis in an EU document.

The theoretical framework was built on empirical institutionalism and Lukes’ first and second dimension of power. The similarities and differences were accounted for and compared. In conclusion, the Danish Committee of European Affairs has more formal power than its Swedish counterpart but regarding informal power the Swedish Committee of European Affairs has a slight advantage. Both committees have an impact on the way their government handle negotiations with the EU.

Keywords: formal power, informal power, the Committee of European Affairs, Sweden, Denmark

Bilder av polisarbete: Samhällsuppdrag, dilemman och kunskapskrav2006Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This chapter is based on a survey of Swedish and international police research. A fundamental task in police work is discussed: dealing with dilemmas. These have to be handled in a judiciously way by the police officers, as there are no absolute answers to the question of how to act in various situations. The reasoning is linked to questions about multi-functional organizations and competence.

Mobbning, interaktion och meningsproduktion: Lokala kulturer, individuella trakasserier och kategoriell uteslutning2007In: Social interaktion: Förutsättningar och former, LIber; Malmö , 2007, p. 164-188Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The career of mobbing: emergence, transformation, and utilisation of a new concept2008Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Concepts play a part in any scientific endeavour. They simultaneously serve as receptacles for previously attained knowledge, as vehicles of scientific and didactic communication, and as building blocks in the construction of new descriptive and explanatory schemes. In this sense, concepts are central to the cognitive organisation of scientific disciplines. But disciplines also differ from one another, and not just in terms of the stock of concepts deemed necessary for internal scientific communication but also, for example, in terms of the logic of conceptual change, the relative influx of connotations, and the degree of universal adherence to specific definitions.

One crucial characteristic of the social sciences is that they share part of their vocabulary with the lay people they study. In some cases, social scientific terminology has trickled into everyday speech; in other cases the social sciences have proceeded by refining and redefining locutions found in natural languages. The aim of this book is to study empirically, by means of a detailed case study, the mechanisms that shape concept formation in the social sciences. It focuses on the history of the concept of ‘mobbing’, with special reference to the interaction between science and lay conceptions. This condensed conceptual history shows that the public discourse, that was instrumental in the diffusion and entrenchment of the notion of mobbing in the early 1970s, significantly shaped the career, contents, and uses of the corresponding scientific concept.

Thinking about configurations: Max Weber and modern social science2005In: Etica e politica: Max Weber: che cosa è vivo oggi del suo pensiero e della sua opera?, ISSN 1825-5167, Vol. 7, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article addresses Max Weber’s relevance for modern social science. The first part is a quantitative assessment of Weber’s fate in mainstream sociology; the second part presents an argument that Weber’s work contains elements of combinatorial thinking which makes it suitable for analysis in terms of the methodological apparatus developed by Charles Ragin. On the one hand, it is shown that Ragin’s notation and concepts are useful in bringing out some important features in Weber’s methodology and substantive writings. On the other hand, it is suggested that Weber’s use of configurations extend into areas that have received little attention in mainstream sociology.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates how teachers in political science work with global issues in their teaching. It investigates the implementation within a specific area. Implementation is a problematic concept and in debate it is often accused of not working.

This thesis finds out whether dissatisfaction exists among teachers when it comes to how municipal schools work with global issues.

The investigation consists of three interviews made with teachers in political science, all from municipal upper secondary schools, in three different cities.

The result shows that dissatisfaction exists among the teachers. Lack of time and lack of dialogue between the teachers and the principles are described as the main hindrances to reach the goals of the implementation. The implementation is however, in a broad outline, depicted positively.

Ungdomar och politik: 2001-2006 i Olofströms kommun2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

I have done a research about how youth councill in Olofströms rural district work in practice and if this conduce to the rural districts work of democracy. My intention is to examine how the youth councill has workt, how it was build up and why did the rural district decide to start a youth councill in Olofström. Did the intentions agree with how the youth councill worked in reality? The choice of subject is to look at how the local democracy work is working in reality. The youth councill is an example on that.

My methods are interviews with politicians in the rural district and close reading of the rural districts minutes and decisions about youth councill and the youth councills bills between 2001 and 2006. The study gives a chronological illustration over which questions were young people interested of during the period. I have come to the conclusion that the youth councill works relative well but not every politician thinks so as it come out of the interwiews. The youth councill has consolidated the democracy work in some extension.

    Abstract [en]

This study deals with Swedish newspapers' portrayals of the Treaty which establishes a Constitution for Europe, which then influenced Swedish newspaper readers. This study connects the areas of both media and politics. What the media states can be expected to shape

public opinion, especially when it comes to foreign policy issues. In order to fullfill the aim of the study, I have constructed two problems which I have answered to in accordance with my data, theoretical framework and research method. My data consists of articles from the largest Swedish morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter. The theoretical framework of this study is a combination of political science, media- and communication science and behaviour science. I have utilized two research methods in this study; a qualitative analysis of content, which transcends into different categories, and a method of quantification of the main actors in the

articles. One of the results that I have discovered in this study is that the image of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe offered to the readers is a fairly positive one.

Syskonplacering, förändringsbenägenhet och konfliktbenägenhet på arbetsplatsen2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Whistle-Blowers in Viet Nam: Possibilities and obstacles from an institutional perspective2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate, from an institutional perspective, the implications of the

new anti-corruption law in Viet Nam with a particular focus on its impact on civil society

and individual rights to report on corruption. The overarching research question is: How do

formal and informal institutions affect whistle-blowers possibilities to engage in combat of

corruption in Viet Nam? To blow the whistle in Viet Nam can be problematic, with

consequences such as loosing his/hers job and social exclusion. Whistle-blowers in Viet

Nam today seem to have an insufficient confidence to official authorities. Moreover, a

problem of significance is that whistle-blowers have to state their name and contact details

when reporting on corrupt acts to competent agencies. Another problem is that civil society

is strongly connected to the CPV (Communist Party of Viet Nam).

Den lilla kommunen och den stora demokratifrågan: E-demokrati i Lessebo kommun2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent alcohol consumption among students is predicted by biological (BMI, age and gender), psychological (Lo-cus of Control and The Big Five Theory) and social (drinking habits within the family and reasons for alcohol consumption) factors. We have chosen to investigate each respondent’s alcohol consumption in relation to BMI and then see to what extent the variance can be predicted by the variables we have investigated. Our selection con-sists of upper secondary school students and university students in Växjö. A total of 201 persons participated in the inquiry, of whom 107 were men and 94 were women. The data was collected by means of a questionnaire. We conducted a multiple regres-sion analysis which showed alcohol consumption can be predicted to 34.3% by the variables in this study. In our selection the biological factors alone predicted 13.1% of the alcohol consumption, the psychological factors 13.3% and the social factors 7.9%. This study seeks to highlight some of the factors that affect an individual’s consump-tion of alcohol, this in order to create a deeper understanding concerning alcohol pat-terns among students.

    Abstract

Datamaterialet bearbetades sedan i statistikprogrammet SPSS.

Pop-culture icons as agents of change?: The roles and fucntions of celebrity activists in peace- and development related global issues2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the possible theoretic and (f)actual role(s) of pop-culture icons in peace and evelopment-related global issues, using the qualitative research methods of text- and discourse analysis. Do pop-culture icons have a role to play at all in this field? If so, what is that role? What are these celebrity activists currently saying and doing on the international development scene and what are their analyses like? What are their current and historical functions? There is support in the academic literature suggesting that celebrity activists can possess vast power resources (scope of influence), (soft) power and (charismatic) authority, which in turn enables them to influence the attitudes and values of (especially young, receptive) people. The findings also show that the most successful celebrity activists have a global reach, as well as access to the international arenas of political power (e. g. the G8 and the World Economic Forum). Celebrity activists seem to be able to "sell" messages in a way that the politicians and officials of today cannot. When they speak, people listen. They further employ a two-level outreach, as they connect with political and economical elite groups as well as with the masses of world citizens in a way that politicians and officials, whose influence is more often limited by traditional nation state boundaries, cannot. I argue that the celebrity activists should be seen as a complement to the civil society and the work of NGO's and INGO's, since it is by further enhancing their work and strengthening their agendas that most of them act.Celebrity activists offer an alternative to the political establishment, which is viewed by suspicion by large groups of citizens, and can play a role in empowerment, inspiration, education, information, awareness raising, fundraising, opinion building and lobbying and function as diplomats, spokespersons, ambassadors, entrepreneurs, convenors and heroic voices.

Rockstjärna, aktivist, opinionsbildare: Har U2-sångaren Bonos sociala, humanitära och politiska engagemang egentligen haft något inflytande över den internationella politiken?2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this minor thesis I describe and analyze Irish rock star Bono’s social, humanitarian and political commitment using a qualitative method of analysis (literature studies) and a broad theoretical framework. The study discusses such concepts as “agenda setting”, “soft power” and “charismatic authority”, as well as the power resources of the celebrity and the power of the media.

The aim of the study has been 1) to see if Bono’s commitment has influenced/influences politics and policies, 2) to describe and analyze Bono’s commitment with the focus on what issues he has supported and worked for, 3) to describe his approach, and 4) to see if one can trace any concrete or measurable results that can be linked to Bono personally.

More specifically, the study sets out to answer the following research questions:

When was the start of Bono’s commitment? How has it changed or evolved throughout the years? What issues and organisations has he supported and worked for, and in what way?

What do the political elites, the economical and academic institutions, the media and the NGO’s say about Bono’s commitment? And last but not least: Is it possible to ”measure” the results of this commitment ?

The findings show that Bono’s commitment has indeed mattered politically, even though it still, as often the case with qualitative research methods, remains uncertain as to exactly what degree - because of difficulties involved in the process of measuring. What can be concluded, though, is that Bono personally, thanks to his status in the music business and his charismatic authority, as a single actor and as part of a context, structure or network (e.g. Jubilee 2000, DATA), has inspired and empowered individual human beings as well as influenced politics and policies on the national and international level (strengthened NGO or citizen initiatives by providing the sought-after media exposure and persuaded/lobbied politicians to change their positions on for example debt relief).

Sociala medier- child of the revolution?: En kvalitativ studie med Facebook i rampljuset2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to illustrate why Norway is not a member of the EU from a rational choice perspective. In order to fulfil this purpose, two questions will constitute the framework of the study. These are:

    1. What are the arguments of the EU-opposers in the Norwegian EU-debate?

    2. Is it rational for Norway to stand outside the EU?

The first question was answered by analyzing and mapping out the arguments of the Norweigan EU-opponents and then using a critical literature study to analyse them. To demarcate the study, only the arguments of the parliamentary parties that are opposing a Norwegian EU-membership, and the official organisation Nei til EU (No to the EU) were included. The second question was tested by using a rational choice theory and a number of keywords from the classical rational actor model; objectives, alternatives, consequences and choice. These keywords constituted the main analyzing instrument of the study and was applied on the empirical material.

The main arguments of the opposers of a Norweigan EU-membership, are widely spoken democracy, freedom of action, environment and solidarity. The debate is hard to map out because of its general character but is very homogeneous. The second question is answered partly in the light of the first one and the result shows that it is rational for Norway to stay outside the EU today, but the question may have to be reassessed in the future, and probably will be since the debate is still so fervent.

Identiteten ”invandrare” i svensk morgonpress hösten 2007: - en diskursteoretisk studie2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this study is to go into depth and analyze the identity ”immigrant” (invandrare) and how it is constituted in Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet and Sydsvenska Dagbladet. An investigation (SOU 2006:21) by Swedish authorities concludes that immigrants are portrayed in an unfavorable way in Swedish media, whilst Gunnar Sandelin in a debate article in Sweden’s biggest morning newspaper (Dagens Nyheter) meant that Swedish media lies about immigrants, creating an image of them that is too favorable that is not in touch with reality. This gives this thesis momentum to further investigate the identity immigrants are given in Swedish media.

The theory and method used in this thesis is Laclau’s and Mouffe’s discourse theory. Discourse theory is well suited for revealing a certain group’s identity using chains of equivalence or chains of analogy. The discourse theory is sprung out of Marxist ideologies, especially Gramsci’s theories. Social antagonism, hegemony and identity are key concepts in discourse theory.

The study shows that the word ”immigrant” only appears in articles that concern different problems in the society. No articles underlining the positive aspects of immigrants were found in the study and none of the journalists identified themselves as an immigrant. The newspapers in this study labels individuals ”immigrant” if they are in need of resources and help from the Swedish society. Immigrants were also not able to constitute their own identity though the constituting power was in the hands of the Swedish morning press.

    Abstract [sv]

Exploring Corruption in Sweden: Types of Corruption, Danger Zones, and Control Mechanisms2008Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ever more research is engaged in understanding corruption. But we still need more knowledge about which areas in society it affects, and how institutional and contextual conditions influence corruption and the risk of corruption. Moreover, countries regarded as among the least corrupt have seldom been examined. This book addresses these gaps. It employs a multi-method approach that combines case- and variable-orientated strategies to study corruption and corruption risks in the public sector in Sweden, a country that the literature regards as having few problems of this type. The empirical studies are conducted using a comparative logic and with an eye to international comparisons. The study draws upon a range of data, such as surveys, newspaper articles and primary sources, including legal documents and a large number of personally conducted interviews. This book is relevant for scholars, students and practitioners with an interest in corruption risks in representative democracy in general and the public sector in particular.
