DIPAC Government Declaration Data: Technical Report 2.02022Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The data described in this report were collected for the DIPAC-project. The project’s aim was to investigate the proposed crisis of parties and party systems in Western Europe during the last four decades. The implications of the crisis are that the link between political parties and citizens has been broken, that the political substance of the dominant parties is becoming increasingly similar, and that party systems are being fragmented along new cleavages where right-wing populist, anti-immigration parties are being set against their opposites, such as green parties. The project aimed to answer the following two questions: 1. To what extent are the ideas and policies of political parties converging or diverging in Western European party systems? 2. Are changes in the parties’ ideas and policies initiated mainly by the parties, or are they adjusting to voter demand arising from social changes? One of our main goals was to collect and analyze data on governments in established democracies in a systematic and comparable manner for the time-period from the mid-1970s to the mid-2010s. The eight cases in focus in the project are Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland (not included in this data set), the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Cartelisation, Convergence or Increasing Similarities?: Lessons from Parties in Parliament2018Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

It is often suggested that political parties are becoming increasingly alike, and that party politics has turned into an elite affair where political professionals collude to further their self-interest rather than work to represent the interests of their constituents. In recent decades this diagnosis has been famously associated with Richard Katz and Peter Mair’s cartel party theory. Yet so far this controversial thesis has not been subjected to systematic empirical scrutiny, nor has its conceptual and normative underpinnings been properly considered. In this volume a group of political scientists with different specialisations take on this task, focusing empirically on the Swedish party system, which the originators of the cartel party theory have suggested is especially conducive to the formation of party cartels. Collecting new and unique qualitative and quantitative data, the volume casts serious doubt on the validity of the cartel party theory as an explanation for party system change.

After secularization: Does sacralization changes political opinion?2009In: ECPR Lisbon 2009: 37th Joint Sessions of Workshops: Programme / [ed] Luis de Sousa, Lisbon: ISCTE , 2009, p. 1-24Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Modernization theory assumes, more or less, an ongoing secularization until hardly no religion is left. But what happen after secularization, when the state is secularized and the religious sentiment of the population do not decrease any more? In Sweden – inhabited of one of the most secularized and Post-Materialist population of the world – religious values are perceived as more important among the youngest generations than among the “baby boomers” born in 1940s and 1950s. Does this sacralization affect political opinion? The study uses survey data on the Swedish population 15-85 years of age conducted in 1986-2006. The tentative answer to the question indicates that sacralization is related to some changes in Post-Material opinions, but does not imply major changes in Material opinion.

Avstamp: Svenska folkets värden och syn på brännande samhällsfrågor2010Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Bakom riksdagens fasad1998Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Bloc identification in multi-party systems: The case of the Swedish two-bloc system.2015In: West European Politics, ISSN 0140-2382, E-ISSN 1743-9655, Vol. 38, no 1, p. 73-92Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

It is argued that although the importance of party identification and social cleavages is declining, the bipolarity of the Swedish party system is sustained by voters' identification with political blocs rather than with parties. Using data from the Swedish election of 2010, the article shows that voters' bloc identification structures their voting behaviour and stabilises the party system. Four hypotheses are tested and supported. H1: Declining party identification has been replaced by bloc identification. H2: Voters with a strong bloc identification are often detached from a strong party identification, while almost all of the few voters with a strong party identification are also attached to a strong bloc identification. H3: Bloc identification has an effect on voting for parties belonging to one of the political blocs, even when party identification is controlled for. H4: Bloc identification has a small effect on electoral support for anti-establishment parties (such as the Sweden Democrats).

Dealignment and realignment: The Swedish parliamentary election of 20222022In: Journal of the Scandinavian Society of Korea, ISSN 1229-8646, no 30, p. 1-40Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The study argues that the Swedish parliamentary election of 2022 is related to major long-term changes in Scandinavian and European politics in general. Therefore, the aim is to analyze long-term changes in Swedish politics over time, in relation to significant short-term changes due to the Swedish parliamentary election of 2022. The study describes the Swedish party system and the election campaign preceding the 2022 Swedish parliamentary election as well as the short-term changes, relative to the previous election, that this election brought with it. The study also describes important long-term changes in the Swedish party system since the 1980s. In relation to these changes, starting in the 1950s, the study describes the increased mobility of Swedish voters and the decline of voting along the social class cleavage as dealignment. Moreover, the study addresses the ideological changes of voters along the subjective left-right scale, the economic left-right dimension, and the libertarian-authoritarian dimension in relation to the concept of realignment. In conclusion, the article shows the need to study the long-term processes of dealignment and realignment to be able to understand the transformed party system that became so clear in the 2022 Swedish parliamentary election.

Den gudomliga debuten2018In: Snabbtänkt: Reflektioner från valet 2018 av ledande forskare / [ed] Lars Nord, Marie Grusell, Niklas Bolin, Kajsa Falasca, Sundsvall: Mittuniversitetet , 2018, p. 45-45Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Guds återkomst proklameras allt oftare i samhällsdebatten.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The study focuses religiosity in an extremely secular society: the case of Sweden. It examines secularization at three levels: societal, organizational, and individual level. The main data are surveys of the adult Swedish population 1986-2008 and official statistics collected by Statistics Sweden and Church of Sweden from 1920 to present. The result shows that people born after 1960 express a stronger interest in religion than people born in the 1940s and 1950s. However, this is a psychological interest. Between these generations, there is no report of changed religious behavior.

    Abstract [en]

Does the allocation of public funding for parties support the assumptions of cartel party theory about a change in the internal balance of power within Swedish parties? By answering this question, the study tests some of Katz and Mair’s theory about changing party financing that are linked to the changed balance of power within cartel parties. Using data on public party subsidiaries 1966–2011 in Sweden, the result supports these assumptions made by the cartel party theory.
