    Abstract [en]

The author Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002) is for many Swedes a genuine national icon. On several occasions, when the most popular and influential Swede is to be announced, Astrid Lindgren’s name is always one of the top names. Astrid Lindgren is for the Swedes known not only as a famous author, but also as a person who spoke out on things she found wrong in the Swedish society. In the history of Swedish literature 1945 is usually regarded as a milestone and Astrid Lindgren’s book Pippi Longstocking was published and revolutionised both children’s literature and the attitude to children and their upbringing. Astrid Lindgren also worked as editor-in-chief for the publishing house Rabén & Sjögren from 1946 to 1970 and for almost a quarter of a century she was responsible for the children’s literature while at the same time she was in practise her own editor. Today, ten years after she passed away 94 years old, her remaining papers, letters and manuscripts are kept in different archives where interesting research can be carried out. There is a substantial amount of material from her rich and prolific life and in this article I wish to illustrate how this material can be used to provide a deeper knowledge of Astrid Lindgren as a person and as an editor.

Book Dog and Astrid Lindgren: A Project to Promote Reading2015In: Interjuli: Internationale Kinder- und Jugendliteraturforschung, ISSN 1868-2049, Vol. 2, p. 85-102Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The project “Book Dog and Astrid Lindgren” at Linnaeus University, Sweden, aims to bring children together with literature and to use dogs as a tool for this. The project seeks to arouse a desire to read by making it appealing, and to spread knowledge about children’s literature in general and Astrid Lindgren’s works in particular. It is geared towards children with difficulties in reading, writing, and speech, children with low motivation for reading, children who already find it fun to read and who are prepared to read more, and adults who are in contact with these children. The method involves the children reading aloud to a dog that makes no demands or judgements. The dog has a calming effect in a situation that is stressful for many children. The project is run in collaboration with the Swedish dyslexia association Dyslexiförbundet, the Hundsam association, and schools and libraries, primarily focusing on children aged between 6 and 13.

Chick Lit in Historical Settings by Frida Skybäck2015In: Journal of Popular Romance Studies, ISSN 2159-4473, E-ISSN 2159-4473, no 5.1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Chick lit is mostly contemporary portrayals of single women in cities. The Swedish author Frida Skybäck writes “chick lit in corsets”, that is, chick lit in a historical setting, and she writes primarily for teenage girls. Her two novels Charlotte Hassel (2011) and Den vita frun (2012) balance between chick lit jr. and romance. They can also be read as historical novels, and in my article I highlight how Skybäck has consciously played with the different genres to convey a feminist message and to strengthen young readers.

    Abstract [en]

Margareta Petersson took her doctorate in 1988 with the dissertation Indien i svenska reseskildringar 1950-1975 [India in Swedish Travel Accounts 1950-1975]. In that study Petersson problematizes travel writing as a genre and discusses whether it should be regarded as documentary or ction. Furthermore, she focuses on the picture of India that is conveyed in a number of travel accounts, how they are tied to their time, and what values and patterns of thought, here called norms, are established. In my article I proceed from part of Petersson’s analysis to study how travels to India have been described in some Swedish books for children. I consider travel literature as a genre with reference to child readers, and I examine the context in which the narratives arose. I also examine how the image of India is constructed in these accounts and how this image is coloured by the genre af liation of the narratives and the time when the story was written.
