    Abstract [en]

    Digital Humanities is today an integrated part of humanistic research at many universities, and initiatives in the field take a variety of forms. At Linnaeus University, Digital Humanities currently develops as a cross-disciplinary field, building on existing collaborations between faculties in the form of an iInstitute tied to the international iSchool Organization, as part of a research excellence centre on Data Intensive Sciences and Applications (DISA), and European collaboration within the DARIAH-EU network – to mention a few. The papers in this volume emanate from a conference on Digital Humanities, arranged and funded by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Linnaeus University on March 12–13, 2020. It is part of the university’s initiative to implement Digital Humanities across departments and faculties, with both a scientific and pedagogical approach, building on competences already present among its researchers and teachers. Focusing the humanities as such, this volume contains contributions from the scholarly fields of Archaeology, History, Library and Information Science, Linguistics, Comparative Literature, Media and Communication Studies, E-learning, and the Study of Religions. It displays a variety of cross-disciplinary connections, new research questions, and innovative methodological approaches – all hallmarks of the wide field of Digital Humanities.

    Abstract [en]

    This book introduces and summarises the Building Block Approach to Religious Studies that has been developed and proposed by professor Ann Taves (University of Santa Barbara) and associate professor Egil Asprem (Stockholm University). The book opens with a lengthy introduction by Taves and Asprem that describes the Building Block Approach, explains how and why they developed it, and what it can be used for in the study of religions. The introduction by Taves and Asprem is followed by seven responses, comments and critiques that identify pros and cons of the approach suggested by Taves and Asprem. The book ends with a response by Taves and Asprem. The overall aim of the book is to provide a short and user-friendly introduction and critical discussion of the building block approach to religious studies that can be used by undergraduate, graduate and more advanced scholars in the field of religious studies. The aim is to provide a critical primer that addresses how and why scholars of religions should pay attention to the building block approach to religious studies.

    Building blocks of religion: critical applications and future prospects2020Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The contributions in this book all concern the Building Block Approach to the study of religions as proposed and explored by Professor Ann Taves (University of California, Santa Barbara) during the last 30 years. This approach suggests that analysis of and explanations for complex cultural phenomena such as religion should entail dividing these phenomena into "the constituent parts that interact to produce them", in terms of basic cognitive, psychological and biological proc-esses. In this way, the approach opens up a path to achieving consil-ience between the humanistic, behavioural and natural sciences. The book provides a short and user-friendly introduction to the Building Block Approach suitable for use in the undergraduate classroom as well as by graduate and more advanced scholars. The book opens with a lengthy introduction by Ann Taves and Egil Asprem (Stockholm University, Sweden) outlining the Building Block Approach and its rele-vance for the study of religions. The introduction is followed by seven responses, comments and critiques that identify pros and cons of the approach from different perspectives and areas of study within the larger field of the study of religions. In the concluding chapter, Taves and Asprem provide their responses to the comments and critiques raised.

    Abstract [en]

    In the present article, the authors argue that the study of Salafism as a contemporary Islamic new religious movement could benefit from an analytical perspective separating fundamentalism into the modes of inferentialism and deferentialism. The basics of these concepts are outlined and discussed in relation to different aspects of contemporary Salafism as well as in relation to previous tendencies in Islamic history. As a case study, the authors employ the concept in an analysis of a contemporary Swedish Salafi discourse on the 'wiping of the (leather) socks' in the context of ritual purity. The authors argue that the concept of 'deferential fundamentalism' has a potential in the study of Salafism in that it allows for comparative analysis, both cross-religiously and diachronically, in contextualising Salafism historically. It also allows for an analysis of Salafi thought and practice in relation to theories of how human beings in general process social information.

    The present article is primarily intended as a methodological contribution to Islamic Studies providing an example of how the power of computer-aided text analysis can benefit the field. The data consists of a set of 51 lexicons created out of translations of the Qur'an into English. The analysis applies simple programming to calculate the lexical overlap between translations and uses the results in a preliminary discussion of possible influence of earlier on later translations. The results are compared with conclusions arrived at in previous research on the interrelationship between translations and are also used to identify and suggest new areas for in-depth studies.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this article is to exemplify how computer-aided methods can assist researchers in the study of religions to collect, organize, and perform rudimentary analysis on web-based material. For this, the article uses the case of the Swedish Salafi website darulhadith.com, perhaps the largest provider of Islamic texts in Swedish online. The results show how the computer-aided methods can greatly facilitate the gathering of information on publication patterns and affiliations that can serve as a basis for further, in-depth studies of content and context. The article discusses possible avenues for assessing levels of impact and suggests further ways in which the content of the material gathered can be explored using computer-aided methods.

    Abstract [en]

    The present article focuses on the choices teachers make when teaching Islamic religious education (IRE) in the town of Kisumu, Kenya. The data were collected through interviews with IRE teachers and participant observations in schools that offered IRE during several fieldwork sessions in the period 2003-2006. The fieldwork revealed that the choices teachers made were related to social and religious contexts both inside and outside the school setting and also the more immediate contexts of the teaching-learning situation. Most clearly, the choices were influenced by the fact that IRE is an examinable subject in a larger educational system. This article claims that an alternation between a confessional education into Islam and a more fact-oriented education about Islam was a strategy used by some teachers balancing between competing demands posed by the educational system, students, parents and the surrounding local society.

    Research from a number of disciplines indicates that the interpretation of HIV/AIDS as

    a divine punishment for illicit sexual practices dominates both a contemporary intra-

    Muslim public religious discourse and perceptions of the disease among Muslims.

    This dominance persists despite the existence of alternative theological interpretations,

    and despite seemingly contradictory empirical evidence. The present article

    develops a hypothesis on why this is the case and poses it against existing attempts at

    explanations. The theoretical basis for this hypothesis is elaborated with the help of

    findings from within the cognitive science of religion, and particularly the notion

    of an “epidemiology of representations.” According to the hypothesis, a combination

    of general psychological and cognitive factors and specific contextual factors provide

    the notion of HIV/AIDS as a divine punishment, with a selective advantage in certain

    social contexts over both theological alternatives and non-religious understandings

    of the disease. The article finally puts forward some predictions that may be tested

    empirically in further research.

    Abstract [en]

    This article concerns the discussions on and use of the Qur'an in the setting of Islamic Religious Education in Kisumu, Kenya. It is based on fieldwork conducted 2003 – 2006. Theoretically it uses a distinction between ritual and cognitive aspects of how the text is addressed. The author finds that the teaching is focused on the latter aspect. Hence, hypothetically the author argues, Islamic Religious Education, through the content and the form of the teaching as well as the position of the subject itself in the overall educational system, promotes a "demystification" of the text, providing it with a character that is quite different from the one dominating in the local Muslim context.

    The aim of this article is to describe and critically discuss the discourse on HIV/AIDS within the framework of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) in Kisumu, Kenya. It is based on data collected mainly through participant observation and interviews during five fieldwork sessions in the period 2003-2006. The context is the research project Islamic education and social development in Kisumu, Kenya, financed by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). The article describes how the issue of HIV/AIDS is present in the context of IRE, mainly in secondary schools in Kisumu, an area heavily affected by the pandemic. The framework in which teachers and students address the issue is one conditioned by notions of religiously correct and incorrect sexual behaviour and gender, and by the fact that Muslims constitute a religious minority in Kisumu. The article argues that the main role of the local discourse on HIV/AIDS and Islam in the context of IRE is to strengthen notions of religious and moral superiority, and hence boost the self-esteem of the Muslim students. Furthermore, it provides support for dominant views and norms relating to Islam, gender and sexuality.

    Recent years have witnessed several examples of desecrations of copies of the Qur’an as a display of non-Muslim hostility against Muslims. The present article attempts to answer a fundamental question relating to this phenomenon: how do desecrators know what acts directed at the Qur’an are likely to offend Muslims? The suggestion put forward is that desecration is an act that can be understood across cultural and religious boundaries because it is based on shared, intuitive knowledge of what the sacredness of an object entails. This knowledge, in turn, rests upon certain mental operations involved in the process of sacralisation: i.e. when things are ‘set apart and forbidden’. When the mental processes of psychological essentialism and conceptual blending are combined, it results in a partial personification of the sacred object, providing inferences concerning which acts count as desecrations, i.e. acts that, had they been directed at a person, would cause harm, whether physical or psychological.
