    Drawing on multi-sited fieldwork among goddess-worshippers in Europe, the presentation explores boundary defining communication through bodily and verbal means. The presentation ethnographically examines the processes of establishing authority and authenticity in two separate but interrelated fields. It shows how authorities negotiate contested themes, such as the formation of authority and establishment of tradition vs individual empowerment and experience, the use of history vs creativity in the search for authenticity, as well as consumerism and commodification vs. an egalitarian ethos and an overt desire to effect social change, in distinct and even contradicting ways. Yet, norms and desires are shaped and communicated through processes of valuation and distinction which creates joint boundaries and a specific ethical landscape in which a shared sense of community can unfold.

    The chapter examines belonging in relation to religious difference in the Swedish educational system. It departs from the stories young Muslims tell of the everyday intersections between religion and schooling. The results show that although the educational system includes religious subjects on a formal level, the young people feel that, as practicing Muslims, they are associated with undesired qualities and excluded from “Swedishness” proper. Moreover, at schools designated as secular spaces and marked by post-Protestant sensibilities, religious bodies become visible and even out of place. The young people call for a recognition of their Muslim identities as desirable and a resource for learning. The article discusses the young people’s strategies and how they manage themselves in accordance with the symbolic boundaries of belonging.

    Få områden är föremål för så omfattande kulturell kontroll som den mänskliga sexualiteten. Genom tiderna har bl.a. religiösa föreskrifter, institutioner och auktoriteter format sexuellt beteende genom moraliska och gudomligt sanktionerade riktlinjer, vilket också är fallet idag. Föreliggande presentation berör hur religiösa ungdomar upplever och förhandlar sexualitet, intimitet och religiositet i ett huvudsakligen sekulariserat Sverige. Utgångspunkten är dock att både sexualitet och religion kan vara centrala noder för individens självkänsla och livsvärld, samt viktiga aspekter i det samtida sociala och politiska rummet.

    Presentationen baseras på intervjuer i ett nätverk av så kallade karismatiskt kristna ungdomar på en mindre ort i Sverige. Karismatisk kristendom består av grupper och individer som eftersträvar s.k nådegåvor, t.ex. andedop, tungotal, helande och profetskap samt starkt betonar engagemang och individuella religiösa upplevelser. Här ingår pentekostala församlingar, men också andra grupper såsom Livets ord och nätverk inom Svenska kyrkan. Det finns också en uttalad konservativ eller "bibeltrogen" del av rörelsen (Halvardson 2008; Moberg 2013). Då intervjustudien inte är avslutad syftar presentationen till att diskutera det metodologiska ramverket samt etablera en teoretisk konceptualisering kring relationen mellan religiös tradition, det sekulariserade och intimitet i ungdomarnas livsvärld. Det ska noteras att presentationen inte berör teologiska utsagor eller regler kring sexualitet och intimitet, utan snarare hur sådana utsagor och regler förhandlas och levs av ungdomarna samt den roll sexualitet, intimitet och religion har i deras livsvärld. Presentationen utgår från begrepp levd religion, där lekpersoners religiösa praktik ges företräde framför religiösa experters normativa beskrivningar. Levd religion är praktikcentrerad, har ett fokus på kroppen, hemmet och det vardagliga, arenor som traditionellt sätt separerats från den religiösa sfären av både religiösa auktoriteter och forskare. Vidare är den sällan koherent i termer av trosföreställningar och praktik. (McGuire 2008; se också Ammerman 2007). I det här perspektivet ses vardaglig praktik och interaktion som centrala för en individs förståelse och orientering i världen. Vidare bör inte individer ses som tomma kärl för religiösa auktoriteters utsagor, utan engagerar sig kritiskt med de kulturella element som finns tillgängliga, något som ofta förbisetts av forskningen.

    Ungdomarna tillhör religiösa grupperingar vars dominerande syn på föräktenskapliga, utomäktenskapliga och homosexuella relationer skiljer sig avsevärt från det omgivande samhället. Sådana grupperingar brukar således ses som begränsande och t.om repressiva då det gäller sexualitet och kroppslig intimitet, åtminstone de former som faller utanför heterosexuella relationerna inom ramen för äktenskapet. Emellertid utgår en sådan syn från en sekulär diskurs som inte tar hänsyn till hur just individer förhandlar och bebor religiösa normer och regler i sin vardag (Nynäs och Yip 2012), samt ett förbiseende av heterosexuella intimiteter som föremål för reglering och förhandling. Religion kan således både fungera som disciplinering och ritualiserad självkontroll samt som en resurs för motstånd mot vad som uppfattas som objektifiering och en omfattande sexualisering av det offentliga rummet. Vidare påverkar förmågan att sammanlänka den religiösa och sexuella identiteten också individens sexuella hälsa och allmänna välbefinnande (Freitas 2008; Gross and Yip 2010). I sådana processer är kroppen central ­– inte bara som fokus för reglering utan också som verktyg för etablerandet av en from hållning i en huvudsak sekulariserad värld.

    Contemporary spiritualties are often portrayed as a turn to a subjective and individualized form of religion, consisting of individually held truth claims or private peak experiences that are generated sporadically at retreats and workshops. The portrayal is ultimately related to a perception of everyday life in contemporary Euro-America as mundane, rationalized, and secular, but also the exclusion of practices centered on the body, the home and the everyday from what is deemed properly religious. This article explores the sacred technologies of the everyday among women in England who identify as Goddess worshippers. The purpose is to further the understanding of religion and the everyday, as well as the conceptualization of contemporary Goddess-worship as lived religion. Through examining narratives on the intersection between religion and everyday activities, the technologies of imbuing everyday life with a sacred dimension become visible. The sacred technologies imply skills that enable both imagining and relating to the sacred. The women consciously and diligently work to cultivate skills that would allow them to sense and make sense of the sacred, in other words, to foster a sense of withness through the means of a host of practices. I argue that the women actively endeavor to establish an everyday world that is experienced as inherently different from the secular and religious fields in their surroundings; hence it is not from disenchantment or an endeavor with no social consequences. The women’s everyday is indeed infused with different strategies where the body, different practices, and material objects are central in cultivating a specific religious disposition that ultimately will change the way the women engage with and orient themselves in the world.
