Who employ senior workers?: Firm characteristics, working conditions, and employers’ main motivations2017In: Presented at International interdisciplinary conference on HRM, Gothenburg, 23-25 March, 2017, 2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We use a unique Swedish company survey data to investigate the central characteristics of workplaces and firms that are employing old workers. We address four research questions: What are the main features of the companies/establishments employing senior workers? How do working conditions and work environments affect the demand of senior workers? What are the main reasons and motivations of employers to keep senior workers after the age of 65? What are the employers’ views regarding the efficiency of government policies to prolong working life? It is found that there is a large variation of firms with employees older than 65 between firm size and industry sectors. The main motivation to keep old workers is found to be the employees’ key competences and employees’ willingness to stay. Employers mainly support policy measures that encourage senior employees to continue working.

    Abstract [sv]

Digital kompetens och spetskompetens i Kronoberg: En delrapport inom projektet – behovsanalys2022Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

Digital competence – state of the art and future needs in the Swedish wooden house manufacturers: SHS rapportnr: 301032023Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this pilot study was to identify the existing level of digital competence and skills at wooden house manufacturers and to understand the future perceived needs they have in relation to these competences. This is motivated by the acknowledgement that digitalization has been emphasized both as a critical necessity and significant challenge for this industry.

The number of responding companies in the study is rather low, offering a partial snapshot of the current state of the industry and potential future directions. However, it does provide valuable insights and considerations for future strategies for digitalization of the industry.

The wooden house manufacturing industry is facing challenges relating to the overall business cycle as well as the effects of war, inflation, and increased competition. Despite these challenges, the industry appears to be aware of the potential possibilities that digital technologies may offer. Overall, they are rather content with the current level of digitalization and the level of digital competence among their staff. At the same time, they realize the need to continue investing in hardware and software as well as continued enhancement of digital skills for the staff. Presently, only a very small portion of total investments in the industry is allocated to digitalization.

Most companies employ similar technologies and a variety of similar strategies to enhance their competences. The primary focus in terms of digital competence lies in the areas of production, marketing, communication, and sales. Areas such as customer support, decision-making, testing, and certification are not prioritized. Most of these companies recognize the need of digital competence development for their staff to effectively use contemporary digital technologies. Furthermore, they see a growing demand for digital competence over the next three years, particularly in domains such as artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, infrastructure, and social media/marketing.

Professional ‘take-offs’ – The Case of Swedish Engineers2012In: NORPRO conference “Professioner – Gamle autoriteter og ny legitimitet” at VIA University College, Aarhus, 25-26 oktober 2012, 2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Professions are considered to be important for a variety of functions and outcomes in the modern knowledge society. One of them is to contribute to the societal function of innovations and the growth of national and regional economies. In the field of technology the rise of engineers as a classic, established profession (civil engineers) and as semi- and pre-professions with new specialties of expertise are crucial for the fulfilment of the high expectations that the society has on these functions and outcomes. Despite their different levels as established professions, engineers in order to fulfil the expectations, has historically had to overcome some professional and organisational struggles that has continued to contemporary society.

In this paper the historical development of engineers in Sweden is the case of a professions’ quantitative and qualitative take-off. The paper focuses on engineers’ historical relationship to science and innovations, the expansion and scientific contents of lower and higher education in engineering, the struggle for power in interest groups and unions and finally engineers’ position in what seems to be the ever-increasing diversified labour markets. In the paper it is argued that the professional take-off of Swedish engineers is not one but two or maybe even three. Quantitatively there have been ups and downs in the number of active engineers during the period ca. 1890–2010. The sheer number of different specializations of engineering professions – that is their different functions and roles in the society – together with difficulties to organise in interest groups and unions has led to a rather scattered group of technological professionals. Tough engineers seem to have been able to actively develop and sometimes create new institutional arrangements that have affected the institutional logics to work for them as a central profession in society. Qualitatively or epistemologically the contents of the scientific knowledge, and ultimately the status of engineers as a profession, has seen dramatic changes through history and the State has played a significant role for these changes, both as a legitimising institution for the development of university education and as a provider of employment for engineers.

Professionalization and Institutional theory: Institutions and professional development among Swedish Engineers2018In: Sociologidagarna 2018: Sociologi i en polariserad värld, 2018Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Institutional theory has recently been used in the study of professions. Some argue that especially neo-institutional theory can bridge the functionalistic and conflict-oriented traditions in professional theory and help develop professional theory (Muzio, Brock & Suddaby 2013). Previous research has pointed to the institutional embeddedness of professions and how professionalization processes are circumscribed and enabled by institutions such as the state, higher education, labor-market and businesses or organizational forms, forms of expertise and professional praxis. Institutional theory might help explain how the configuration of institutions changes and what consequences are produced from those changes – consequences such as eroded or relegated autonomy over jurisdiction, self-governance, discretion and control to other actors.

The purpose of this study is twofold: First, to describe how the profession(s) of Swedish engineers and their organizations historically have related to different institutions and their effects on professional development, and secondly a humbler purpose is to critically propose some theoretical developments to the neo-institutional theory on professions.

The Engineering Profession after Neoliberalism: Still a failed profession?2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The engineering profession have been called “a failed profession” owing to its lack of social closure. Other reasons for being a failed profession, such as a weak correspondence between engineering education and the unclear definitions of task assignments and to the unsuccessful monopolization of the task assignments, has been furthered by the breakthrough of neoliberal measurements from the mid 1980s and onwards. In this paper it is argued that the engineering professions and their professionalization processes has been affected negatively by the circumscription, that has followed by neoliberalism – although perhaps less than other professions. The argument is partly based on a study (Brante, Johnsson, Olofsson & Svensson 2014) reporting a survey of the governance and control of professions, inquiring engineers attitudes towards the changed work content and specific engineering skills necessary for the labour market requirements and (high performance) task assignments at work. The preliminary results suggest that engineers’ perception of the task assignments have become more governed and circumscribed (in both economic, political and bureaucratic aspects) through time and that it has been of detriment to the work.

    Abstract [en]

Although the engineering profession has been called “the failed profession” owing to its lack of social closure, engineers have been successful in claiming their area of expertise and specialized knowledge as legitimate areas of research, knowledge, and intervention. In this article, the historical development of engineering professions in Sweden is used as a case of professional development. With the use of primary statistical sources and secondary historical sources, I endeavor to explain engineers’ professional development via coinciding factors such as the expansion and scientific content of lower and higher engineering education, the struggle for power in interest groups and unions, and engineers’ position in what seems to be an ever-increasingly diversified labor market. I argue that the professionalization process for Swedish engineers has fluctuated and that more than one professional take-off (two or even three) has occurred.
