    Abstract [en]

    This paper addresses an important gap in the literature intersection between network theory and networked innovation by developing a theoretical framework on how to leverage learning alliances across extra- and intra-corporate levels to support both exploration and exploitation of innovation to secure its creation and its implementation. A detailed case of the Volvo C70 development is analysed with focus on how the full innovation from exploration to exploitation of innovation seem to rely on fundamentally different types and structures of networks. Our detailed description and analysis of how a ‘transformation network’ was established and operated across different organizational levels to secure not only transfer, but also transformation and integration of knowledge into commercialized innovation makes an important contribution to extant theory on inter-organizational knowledge transfer and networking.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper reviews 100 papers on the topic of Industry–University (I/U) collaborations to identify the drivers and main-barriers to such collaborations. It reveals that the greatest challenges from the companies' point-of-view reside in steering the collaborative project towards business objectives, and internalising the results for corporate technology innovation impact. Our review also reveals that there is only limited advice in the literature on how to handle these challenges. New knowledge is developed through deduction from theory and induction from qualitative in-depth studies with ten leaders of innovation in high-tech industries. The most relevant case is described in this paper – illustrating how Bang and Olufsen (B&O) spun off their core technology into a separate company so as to radically improve their steering and internalisation of academic knowledge in this area. Managerial conclusions are drawn from the theoretical framework and the case to suggest how to explore and exploit academic knowledge for global technology innovation impact.

    How Technology-Based University Research Drives Innovation in Europe and China – Leveraging the Power of Proximity2008In: Journal of Technology Management in China, ISSN 1746-8779, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 12-46Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess how technology-based university research drives innovation in Europe and China.

    Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws on extensive theoretical research and literature reviews, and presents a framework based on theories on networking, knowledge creation and innovation. It then introduces three European cases to illustrate practical applications of the framework, and also links the findings to three Chinese cases to make comparative observations as well as recommendations related to Triple Helix concepts and their implications in the China context. It addresses the issue of how learning from universities can enhance company flexibility and performance in innovation, and outlines three different models of collaboration.

    Findings – The framework and empirical research suggests that weak ties are useful for inspiration in exploration, but that strong industry-university (I-U) ties are required to support exploitation. This finding applies both to Europe and China in the industries covered.

    Originality/value – This paper provides a new theoretical rationale for I-U learning alliances as a natural way out from the managerial problem of trying to perform both exploration and exploitation within the same company boundaries. Through the theoretical framework, the academic science domain becomes a logical partner to handle the full phase of exploration and support the process of exploitation. The presented European cases of Bang & Olufsen, Combibloc and Porsche offer new insights into how to perform this act in practice, while the three China-related cases allow us to cross analyse empirical findings and draw initial conclusions with policy implications for China.

    In the context of global R&D, we connect literature on knowledge management to a network-based theoretical framework helpful to explain the impact of R&D globalisation on innovation performance. This framework is applied to two case companies, both global leaders within their respective industries, in order to analyse the extent to which their strategic globalisation of R&D activities, from Scandinavia to China, has contributed to increased innovation performance. Our findings suggests that close interaction and cross-fertilisation with local knowledge networks are of eminent importance for newly established R&D offsprings to improve overall innovation performance. Pack Tech illustrates this through a collaboration-intensive approach to university competitions in China.

    Intended R&D Knowledge Spillover: Strategy for Innovation Leadership2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Given the increasing focus on intellectual capital as the most valuable assets of many knowledge intensive companies, we might assume that the knowledge constituting valuable intellectual capital should ideally be kept secret for entities external to the company. This protective logic may, however, inhibit companies striving for innovation leadership. In our enquiry into R&D knowledge spillover effects on innovation, we develop case studies from Fastcar and Bigpack. The resulting theoretical framework, built on selected networking and knowledge creation theories, is illustrated through the two case studies and useful for further analysis of positive R&D knowledge spillover effects.

     

    By proactively facilitating knowledge sharing with relevant parts of the surrounding environment, the company enables itself to feed knowledge into its surrounding environment - thereby developing the innovation potential of the environment for exploration purposes, and the opportunities to identify and to feed knowledge back to the company for exploitation purposes, from the same environment.

    Building new Knowledge Networks: A Europe–China Perspective on R&D Offshoring2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper explores how offshoring of R&D affects innovation performance based on three recent cases of R&D transfer from Scandinavia to China. One globally leading packaging company moved R&D to China and immediately arranged innovation competitions between three selected universities in order to improve their innovation performance within distribution equipment. Two other Scandinavia originated companies - now global leaders within robotics and diabetes treatment - did on the other hand not cooperate as closely with local universities when it transferred R&D to China - and captured less innovation performance. By combining theories on ambidexterity, knowledge transfer and networking, a theoretical framework is developed to analyze the different strategies for local knowledge network interaction that are deployed by the case companies. The analysis suggests that close interaction and cross-fertilization with local knowledge networks are of eminent importance if newly established R&D offsprings are to improve overall innovation performance.
