    Abstract [en]

    Tire and road wear particles are one of the major sources of micro plastics in Sweden. Street sweeping has been used for a long time to reduce particulate matter. The objective of this thesis was to investigate whether street sweeping could be a potential measure to reduce the amount of microplastics, and if it is possible to analyse micro plastic particles from road and tire wear. In this thesis, samples have been collected with Wet Dust Sampler II (WDS II) in various sections of the road before and after sweeping. Samples have been taken on Ehrenströmsgatan, a paved road in central Gothenburg with 10 500 ADT. The road has two lanes and a bike lane/sidewalk on the edge separated from the lanes with a kerb.

    In addition to size distribution, dust load and turbidity, the samples have been analysed for micro plastics. Three analytical methods have been evaluated: SEM / EDS, pyr-GC-MS and optical analysis with a stereo microscope. The result indicates that the micro plastic content decreases after cleaning in samples analysed by microscope and pyr-GC-MS while the amount has increased in samples analysed with more general methods that do not specifically look at the plastic particles.

    The conclusion is that cleaning as a reducing measure has potential, but more sweepers, test sites and cleaning strategies should be evaluated. The highest amount of particles are usually found at the kerb, therefore a proposal is to focus on cleaning at the kerb rather than the entire road width.

    The analytical methods capable of analysing particles from road and tire wear (TRWP) are currently limited. They are expensive and time consuming and the samples require a lot of processing before analysis. Nor comparison between results from different analyses are possible because they generate different responses (eg particle numbers or concentration) and analyze particles in different size ranges. The conclusion is that more research and development on analytical methods is necessary, as well as more sampling and analyses of particles from Sweden's road network is needed.
