    Abstract [en]

Liberal economic policies adopted in The EU after agreement on no customs duties at internal borders between the EU member states, common customs duties on imports from outside the EU, common rules of origin for products from outside the EU and a common definition of customs value between the six founder member states led to accomplishment of the Customs Union on 1 July 1968. The EU has a liberal agenda that attempt to promote free trade in all parts of the world and in order to promote free trade in the world, the EU wants to pursue a policy similar to domestic trade policy under the Lisbon Treaty. However the customs union which led to liberalisation of the EU’s economy have had a devastating effect on the third world economies. The EU agreement on no customs duties at internal borders between the EU member states led to creation of new boundaries, restrictions, high tariffs and customs barriers. On the one hand, the EU wants to pursue a policy similar to the domestic trade policy under the Treaty of Lisbon and adhere to liberal principles and on the other hand, the EU has attracted widespread criticism for establishing barriers to trade mostly with the third world and not complying with its own principles. This study will inquire and investigate whether there really exists a contradiction by examining the relationship between theory and practice in EU trade policy in relation to both the external and internal market and to chart what it actually looks like.
