Skrivundervisning i grundskolans tidigare år F–3: En systematisk litteraturstudie2021Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In YA dystopias, adolescent girls are repeatedly used as breeders of the new generation and must go to the extremes to protect their offspring from an oppressive society. The motif of the adolescent mother is used both to highlight the vulnerability of the young mothers and the challenges that they face when they bring a vulnerable child into their dystopian worlds. It illustrates inequalities in the distribution of power between the adult generation and adolescents. It is one of several tools that authors of YA dystopias use to problematise adults’ oppression of adolescents in real-life societies through the lens of extreme power abuse in dystopian, future worlds. Through an analysis of Amy Ewing's The Lone City trilogy (2014–2016) and Jennie Melamed's Gather the Daughters (2017), the chapter illustrates in what ways the young mothers are oppressed, how they respond to this oppression, and how they rebel against it. An intersectional approach is applied, which clarifies that intersections between for example youth, motherhood, and gender affect both how the adolescent mothers are positioned in their dystopian society's matrix of domination and what possibilities they have to challenge their oppression for the sake of themselves and/or their child.

Damsel In Command:  The Characterization of Beverly Marsh in It and It Chapter 22022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay analyzes the character of Beverly Marsh in Andrés Muschietti’s It and It Chapter 2. By using previous research on women in horror, Beverly’s character is dissected with regards to sexualization and agency. Both the films contrast the common trope of the weak sexualized woman in horror movies by staying away from over-sexualization and making Beverly an equal to her male counterparts.

Sjörättsmål: En jämförelse mellan målen i Sveriges sjörättsdomstolar2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The Shakespearean Stahr: Using Genette’s Theory of Intertextuality to Compare The Last Tycoon to Shakespeare’s Tragedies2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay uses Gerard Genette’s theory of intertextuality – in particular, architextuality - in order to establish the connection between Shakespearean tragedies and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last novel, The Last Tycoon. The essay relies mainly on known Shakespeare critic A.C Bradley and the categories he uses in order to establish what makes a Shakespearean tragedy a Shakespearean tragedy. This framework will then be used to further elaborate upon the architextual connection between Shakespeare and Fitzgerald. The essay also compares the characters from The Last Tycoon directly to characters from Shakespeare’s tragedies in order to further show the intertextual connections. For example, Fitzgerald's main character Monroe Stahr is compared to Julius Caesar, from Shakespeare's play of the same name, while the antagonist Mr Brady is compared to both Cassius from the previously mentioned Julius Caesar, as well as Iago from Othello

The Gendered Envisionments Of Reading The Poet X: Understanding Students' Meaning Making in Swedish EFL Classrooms2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay applies theories from gender studies and reader response to Elizabeth Acevedo’s The Poet X (2018). The essay discusses diversity in meaning making by investigating differences in creating envisionments. The aim is to unmask the differences in reading to improve and direct teaching practices in EFL classrooms. Moreover, an additional aim is to discuss whether envisionment can be seen as a gendered concept, or if the different readings are equally possible to reach Langer’s five stances. The Poet X centres on a female first-person narrator where the critique towards church, society and normative behaviour is prominent. The potential differences can be seen in understanding the characters in the novel, relating to previous experience and differing understandings of social structures. The pedagogical implementation aims at designing a learning situation where these differing understandings of text can be shared through metacognitive reflection and open-ended methods of pedagogy. The shared understanding of The Poet X in EFL settings can develop the students’ ability to find agency in interpretating texts.

Muntlighet i lågstadiet: en systematisk litteraturstudie om hur lärares didaktiska kompetens kan främja elevers kommunikativa kompetens2021Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Letters by Anne Marie Appelgren is based on the author’s own experience. It tells the story of a woman trapped in her past. After her mother dies the protagonist inherits old family letters and soon starts her journey to find out how the family situation got so toxic. She finds out about her mother’s childhood in Germany, at the beginning of World War II, and  how the child was bounced between Germany, Finland and Sweden during the war.

The rift between mother and daughter began when the daughter felt stifled and invisible in her home environment and needed to break free. Her mother would never forgive her for this.

The daughter finds out that she is the last link in a series of only daughters. If there were two daughters only one gave birth. Six generations all have at least three things in common; they followed a man to a different country, they all got divorced, except for one who remained in a loveless marriage, and each had a problematic relationship with their mother.

Praktiska förslag på teoretisk grund: Didaktiska redskap för svensklärarens narratologiska verktygslåda2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Sherlock Holmes has travelled across media borders extensively: from technical to technical medium, from basic to basic medium, and from qualified to qualified medium. Through the decades, Sherlock Holmes appeared in many different forms of storytelling and media constellations, so we can analyse the character in terms of transmediality. This chapter discusses one such example: Penny Dreadful, which originated in 2014 as a television series created by the acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter John Logan. The very same processes of worldmaking that have made Welcome to Night Vale successful have enabled the creation of the transmedial worlds of the Sherlock Holmes universe and the transfiction Penny Dreadful. Following Marie-Laure Ryan’s analysis of transmedia, Jan-Noel Thon also notes that transmedial storyworlds can be varying mixtures of canonical media products and fan-produced material. In terms of media modalities, a contemporary audio drama that mimics a community radio broadcast uses a single sensory modality: all information reaches the listeners through the ear.

    Abstract [it]

Des pieds de la croix à l’art total: Etude des représentations de l’Eglise et de l’art sacré à travers l’ekphrasis huysmansienne2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The term "ekphrasis" is indisputably problematic. In fact, depending on which definition one might use ekphrastic processes can either be broad, that is extended to any type of description as it was taught in rhetoric treaties during antiquity, or according to its modern definition circumcised to literary representations of works of art. Since ekphraseis are a key feature of Huysmans's work, this study strives to explore their scope through describing the sacred art in the so-called "catholic novels" Huysmans wrote after his religious conversion and the Church's representation that stems from them. This study focuses on two forms of religious art: the plainchant and the architecture. Based on a broad theoretical frame ranging from ekphrasis and hypotyposis figures of speech to intermediality, the study shows that the medieval Church is considered as quintessentially a pluri-medial entity or as Wolf puts it, a "syncretistic medium". Thus, it seems possible to establish a connection between this image of an ideal Church and the notion of Gesamtkunstwerk. Last but not least, this depiction which arises from Huysmans's work sheds light on a broader societal phenomenon that occurred in the transitional period which was the late 19th century, namely a strong interest in medievalism.

A Grotesque and Gothic Corporeality: Queer Transgression in Closer and Frisk2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates how two novels by Dennis Cooper, Closer and Frisk, conceive of queer sexuality as transgressing heteronormative notions of moral standards, and how they challenge these by elevating their subject matters to an excessive degree. Drawing on the concepts of the grotesque and the Gothic, this thesis explores the aesthetics of Closer and Frisk, focusing in particular on the way corporeality figures as a central aspect of how these texts explore the ways in which the body becomes a site for Cooper’s discourses of transgression. Furthermore, drawing on Lee Edelman’s notion of the queer subject as inherently opposed to the value of every social form and structure, it is argued that the adverse representations of Cooper’s subjects work to add to this oppositionality. Thus, this thesis investigates how the queer expressions of desire in the texts are inextricable from the aberrant imagery of the body; the body as Gothically grotesque in the novels provides ways to configure alternative ways of conceptualizing the queer body and investigate its ties to transgression.

Modality in Spiritual Literature: A Corpus Aided Discourse Study on Sadhguru and Eckhart Tolle2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates and discusses how two spiritual teachers from different parts of the world interact with their devotees, what the probable impacts of their interaction are, and whether they speak similarly or differently based on the use of modal auxiliary verbs and pronouns. Linguistically speaking, the mystics mostly have to address their audience/readers in a particular manner with expressions which represent certainty, possibility, obligation and so on; thus, a study of such is necessary and modal auxiliary verbs represent such expressions. The two primary texts were chosen based on contemporary work and popularity. One of the texts was authored by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, a spiritual teacher, an international spokesperson and a popular author. The other text was by Eckhart Tolle, a spiritual teacher and best-selling author. A corpus-assisted discourse approach was taken while looking into modal auxiliary verbs and their pronoun bigrams using Ant-Conc and Log-likelihood Calculator. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were taken for the analysis.

Findings suggest three things. First, both authors use similar types of modal verbs (epistemic) in most cases. Second, after comparing the type of modal verbs (epistemic/deontic) significant differences are observed. When the authors use epistemic modals, the choice of bigrams addresses different audience types and the way they approach a concept is different. Sadhguru (2020) addresses the general audience/readers whereas Tolle (2004) addresses the readers who need spiritual guidance. Finally, the choice of modal verbs represents mostly certainty that keeps the mood of the book calm and content for the readers. To sum up, spiritual teachers mostly speak from their experience and represent the expression of certainty and possibility though they address their readers differently.

Senmoderna reflexioner: Festskrift till Johan Fornäs2012Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Senmoderna reflexioner.

Late modern reflexions: Festschrift for Johan Fornäs is an anthology of more than twenty essays dedicated to Johan Fornäs on his 60th birthday 7th of mars 2012. Several of the articles included take Johan Fornäs’ books as their starting point, while others are related, in different ways, to his wide and diverse interests. The book is divided into four thematic parts, dealing with "Theoretical Practices", “Medial Practices”. “Aesthetic Practices” and “Literary Practices”. Articles included under ”Theoretical Practices” discuss different aspects of hermenutics, culturalization, and cultural capital. ”Medial Practices” offers studies of contemporary media phenomena, relating them to questions of democracy and politics.”Aesthetic Practices” include contributions that discuss the function of different cultural practices in the public sphere. The last section, ”Literary Practices”, takes a closer look at both select literary texts and the discourses surrounding them. Most of the Articles are written in Swedish, with the exception of three articles in English.

The Orient and The Occident: Breaking Stereotypes in The Reluctant Fundamentalist2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a postcolonial novel that, in this essay, is argued to challenge and question the colonial stereotypes which came into greater focus after 9/11 in America. The challenge is carried out via the narrator’s identity struggle by displaying the different stereotypes he is subjected to. The quiet listener to the narrator’s monologue, together with the reader’s part in creating and making sense of the novel also contributes towards challenging these stereotypes. The East and West are set against each other, displaying how both have harsh and generalizing views of the other.

Truthfulness and truth claims as transmedial phenomena2022Inngår i: Intermedial Studies: An Introduction to Meaning Across Media / [ed] Jørgen Bruhn; Beate Schirrmacher, Routledge, 2022, s. 225-254Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores different relations of truthfulness and discusses the truth claims of the different qualified media types. Truthfulness is a transmedial notion and when we speak of truth in different contexts, we refer to different kinds of knowledge. Truth, facts and authenticity are often used in everyday discourse as part of apparently clear-cut binaries like truth–lie, authentic–fake, fact–fiction. The truth claims of media can be employed in communication to produce a perception of truthfulness. As media products can be truthful both in relation to external perception or inner experience, another way to look at truth claims is to divide them into objective and subjective truth claims. The chapter discusses how different forms of disinformation draw on the truth claims of news media and construct a perception of truthfulness that is based more on internal coherence than on events that actually have taken place.

Vänskapens arkiv: tankar kring Elin Wägners boksamling, det kulturella minnets glömska och en historieskrivning bortom heteronormativiteten2022Inngår i: Litteraturen i arbete: Vänskrift till Peter Forsgren / [ed] Jörgen Bruhn; Åsa Nilsson Skåve; Piia K Posti; Anna Salomonsson, Växjö: Trolltrumma , 2022, s. 19-31Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study analyses three children’s books, selected from a list of bestsellers during 2016. The selected books are intended for children aged 6–9 and are categorized as easy reading. The aim of the study is to analyse how girls and boys are portrayed in children’s literature from a gender perspective. With this study we want to bring greater awareness and understanding of gender in children’s literature.

When children read, they create new experiences and ideas about the world around them. As a teacher it is therefore important to have gender awareness when choosing books in the classroom. The analyses showed that the books contained not only reproductions of traditional gender patterns but also characters who went against the norms. This result agreed in part with previous research and the prevailing discourses in society.

Assèze l'Africaine de Calixthe Beyala: Un roman d'apprentissage qui inverse les rôles ?2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

According to some theorists, the roman d’apprentissage, a sub-genre of the novel that reached its height during the 19th century, was essentially a masculine genre in which the female characters invariably played an incidental role. Although some maintain that the sub-genre is now obsolete, many others insist that it continues to be adapted to explore themes relating to larger topics such feminism and postcolonialism.

The current study examines how a female author of Cameroonian origin, Calixthe Beyala, appears to have adapted the traditional form of the roman d’apprentissage in her novel, Assèze l’Africaine, to reflect the perspective of a young black woman migrating from Cameroon to Paris, while simultaneously exploring theoretical concepts such as féminitude and hybridité.

By comparing the essential characteristics of the novel to those advanced by Pierre Aurégan (1997) concerning the sub-genre as a whole, the study first attempts to determine whether the novel in question can reasonably be classified as a roman d’apprentissage. Subsequently, given that the protagonist is female, by exploring the literary function of several of the male characters in the novel, the study seeks to reveal whether the roles of the characters are simply reversed according to their gender, with the male characters merely playing an incidental role.

The study reveals that although the author has clearly adapted the sub-genre to suit her own purposes, the novel still adheres to enough of the typical characteristics to be classified as a roman d’apprentissage. In addition, although the protagonist is female, the roles of the characters do not appear to be simply reversed, as several of the male characters are essential to the emotional development of the heroine, as well as to the perpetuation of the binary oppositions female/male and black/white, which, it has been suggested, the author seeks to maintain in her other works.

It would seem that, in the novel under examination, the male characters largely function as an essential complement to the female ones. It remains to be seen, however, whether the same can be said about the characters in the author’s other works.

Cette peau homosexuelle que le monde m’a imposée: La construction de l’identité sexuelle chez Rachid O. et Abdellah Taïa2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 40 poäng / 60 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

According to some literary and anthropological theorists, the plurality of masculinities in Morocco cannot be adequately expressed by the concept of homosexuality. Nevertheless, as a result of colonialism, the hetero-/homosexual dichotomy has become part of the collective Moroccan consciousness, despite the fact that it remains in conflict with more traditional ways of thinking. The friction created by such opposing epistemologies is rendered even more complex as authors of Morrocan origin living in Paris endeavour to write of their marginalised sexualities, due in part to the lingering preference of the French literary market for exoticism, which brings with it a host of other identity-related expectations and challenges.

Two authors with similar origins and trajectories, both born and raised in Morocco and from roughly the same generation, Rachid O. (Abdellah Oubaïd) and Abdellah Taïa both immigrated to Paris as young adults, where they became published writers known primarily for the transcultural homoerotic themes and identity-related issues their works contain. Dealing in large part with stories of young Moroccan men coming to terms with their marginalised sexuality, many of their works are considered to be autobiographical in nature. Upon closer examination, it is interesting to note that both authors rarely use the words ‘homosexual’ or ‘homosexuality’ until much later in their respective careers.

Consequently, the current study seeks to compare how such ‘homosexuality’ is constructed in their works, by contrasting three works published by each author, two published toward the beginning of their literary career, and one a number of years later. In doing so, particular attention was paid to the relationships the protagonists of each author have not only with the words used to describe their sexuality, but also with the other characters and places around them. The theoretical framework for such analysis was provided by concepts such as hegemonic masculinity, cultural hybridity and identity allocation. A number of conclusions were drawn, the most striking of which is perhaps that, particularly in the works of Taïa, homosexuality as an identity is viewed more as an unwanted layer of skin imposed by society than as a source of liberation.

    Abstract [en]

In 1953 the Swedish concrete poet and internationally renowned avant-garde artist Öyvind Fahlström (1928–76) wrote the worlds first manifesto for concrete poetry, inspired by the historical avant-garde and the neo-avant-garde that at the same time was on its rise, but also by Pierre Schaeffer’s musique concrète. What is little known, though, is that this manifesto was followed by a string of others, of which I here will discuss three utopian manifests from 1962, 1966 and 1976. The first manifesto took its incentive from the exhibition Movement in Art, and introduces radical ideas about involving the audience in the artwork/s itself. The intention was to erase the barrier between artist, artwork and audience. In the two later manifestoes Fahlström – after his move to New York 1961 – takes a more explicit political stance. In the manifesto from 1966 he draws up a Utopia without war, commercialism, and poverty, where citizens have equal rights and live in ”the ecstatic society” with free sex and drugs, ideas a few years ahead of the 1968 revolt. And, finally, in the last manifesto he visualises a totally new society, based on Equality, freedom, decentralisation, work as a creative activity, and free services and goods.

The poetical techniques proposed in his manifesto laid the ground forFahlström’s later production in different arts, from concrete poetry to radioplays. His first radio composition Fåglar i Sverige (1963, Birds in Sweden)triggered a whole new genre, the international movement of text-sound-poetry(a.k.a. sound-poetry, poésie sonore). The second radio play (or blind music, ashe called it) Den helige Torsten Nilsson (1966, The holy Torsten Nilsson), becamea small success despite its strange story, and was aired in five differentepisodes by the Swedish broadcasting company. This radio play was composedfrom what Fahlström termed ”life material”, i.e. recorded (with a microphone andcheap tape recorder) sound from the constant media flow in his apartment inNew York, with himself performing the voiceover telling the story. Theremediated material was mainly taken from popular culture, as for examplehorror movies, but also real life filtered through TV and radio. His method wasinspired by Schaeffer’s musique concrète and William Burroughs’ cut-ups, towhich he added game strategies. The result was a highly original media-mix,where he performed an international spy history interwoven with sounds fromcontemporary media and life, a mix that at the same time reflected his politicalurge and interest for world politics.I will discuss role of the book for performance art in the 60s, where the printedtext was only one of the components in a larger intermedial cluster. I willexemplify my discussion with Öyvind Fahlström’s concrete poem “Det stora ochdet lilla” (The large and the small), which became the musical score for aperformed text-sound composition, and his radio play Den helige TorstenNilsson (1966) where the book was fabricated afterwards, to illustrate the‘fluidity’ of the book in the 60s.

The Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström moved to New York in 1961, where he meet the Swedish engineer Billy Klüver, and became part of the international neo-avant-garde movement. Fahlström’s performance, New York 1966, part of Klüver’s performance series 9 Evenings, is my point of departure for an analysis of the role of migration for the neo-avant-gardes in the 1960s. As intermediaries, Fahlström and Klüver brought new ideas both to New York and Stockholm, thus challenging the established view that American art was exported to the periphery. In reality, the New York art scene grew out of ideas and experiences arriving with immigrating artists, who in turn often exchanged ideas developed in the New York melting pot with actors in their original artistic and cultural contexts.

Mediatized Authenticity: Öyvind Fahlström’s performance "Kisses Sweater than Wine" (1966)2017Inngår i: Authentic Artifice : 3rd International Conference, International Society for Intermedial Studies. Université de Montréal, May 18-20/22 2017: Program, Montréal: Université de Montréal , 2017, s. 19-20Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Performance art is solidly rooted in the “Hier und Jetzt” asserted by Walter Benjamin as the only remaining con-dition for the Aura. But, as Philip Auslander observes, every performance is always already mediatized in one way or an-other, and still we experience its authenticity. In my paper, I will argue that mediatization seems to be a (necessary) condition for authenticity, in a discussion of the Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström’s (1928–76) performance Kisses Sweeter than Wine(1966). In 1953, Fahlström wrote the world’s first manifesto for concrete poetry, inspired by Pierre Schaeffer’s musique concrète. In the mid 1950s he turned to the visual arts, and later he wrote radio plays, directed movies and arranged per-formances and happenings. He moved to New York in 1961 and joined the international neo-avant-gardes there. In his use of new technology and different broadcasting media, Fahlström was a forerunner for media art, and the intermedial intricacy can be fully understood and discussed only in our own infor-mation age. His, and other similar, experiments in the 1960s are important links in the genealogy of today’s networked, global, and multiscreen world, since they constitute early con-fluences of cybernetics, art, and media. This is best seen in his performance, which was part of 9 Evenings. Theatre and Engi-neeringarranged by Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York in 1966. He mixed performance on stage with a plethora of mediatized events, but still his art retained its essential authenticity.

    Abstract [en]

Avant-garde aesthetic movements react on and appropriate new technological media in a process of breaking down the boundaries between different media and different “arts," in an attempt to generate meaning from the sheer materiality of the artwork. Avant-garde artworks will therefore by necessity be marked by media in different ways, at the same time as these art forms are processual, performative and transgressive. One of the prime Swedish examples of this avant-garde strategy is Ake Hodell’s many realizations of his manuscript Lågsniff. The manuscript, written in 1963, was in the form of a text-sound-composition, which means that Lågsniff, already in this form, took many configurations with a plurality of genres and media modalities involved. Later the manuscript was realized as a series of performances, a TV-film, a book, and in 2002 as a DVD. For such a collection of art works, I would like to suggest the term “intermedial cluster.” The point of departure for my discussion is the DVD, a remediation of the TV- film from 1966, and I will focus on two of the juxtaposed discourses in the cluster that this DVD represents: the package tour and warfare, and on two thematic foci in the film: media and memory, and man as automaton.
