    Abstract [en]

    This study deals with employment agreements: the Swedish Storsjö Agreement for officers and telegraphists, Faroese Employment Agreement for Swedish officers and the ITF Uniform ”TCC” Collective Agreement for crews onboard flag of convenience ships. The purpose of the comparison was to determine differences between the agreements concerning termination, economical compensation for illness and injury cases and liability in case of default in regards of social security. The method of the work was a qualitative literature study. Storsjö Agreement and the Faroese Agreement is relatively similar to each other regarding termination of the contract, while the ITF Agreement differ from the other agreements. Regarding economical compensation for illness and injury cases all the agreements provides a safety net for the officer. The compensation with Storsjö Agreement is based on the Swedish Social Insurance Agency payouts, while the Faroese Agreement and ITF Agreement have separate insurance policies that the company arranges to individual officers. Regarding liability due to default, the ITF Agreement contract differ since it does not have to be any exceptional reasons for the default, which is required in Storsjö Agreement and the Faroese Agreement, to make the officer personally responsible for the damage. The comparison gives a good insight into how the contracts are structured around national laws and/or the lack of them. Generally Storsjö Agreement is more reassuring than the Faroese Agreement and the ITF Agreement concerning social security.

    Abstract [en]

    Background: Trauma is a main cause of death among young adults worldwide. Patients experiencing a traumatic cardiac arrest (TCA) certainly have a poor prognosis but population-based studies are sparse. Primarily to describe characteristics and 30-day survival following a TCA as compared with a medical out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (medical CA). Methods: A cohort study based on data from the nationwide, prospective population-based Swedish Registry for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (SRCR), a medical cardiac arrest registry, between 1990 and 2016. The definition of a TCA in the SRCR is a patient who is unresponsive with apnoea where cardiopulmonary resuscitation and/or defibrillation have been initiated and in whom the Emergency Medical Services (EMS, mainly a nurse-based system) reported trauma as the aetiology. Outcome was overall 30-day survival. Descriptive statistics as well as multivariable logistic regression models were used. Results: In all, between 1990 and 2016, 1774 (2.4%) cases had a TCA and 72,547 had a medical CA. Overall 30-day survival gradually increased over the years, and was 3.7% for TCAs compared to 8.2% following a medical CA (p < 0.01). Among TCAs, factors associated with a higher 30-day survival were bystander witnessed and having a shockable initial rhythm (adjusted OR 2.67, 95% C.I. 1.15-6.22 and OR 8.94 95% C.I. 4.27-18.69, respectively). Discussion: Association in registry-based studies do not imply causality but TCA had short time intervals in the chain of survival as well as high rates of bystander-CPR. C onclusion: In a medical CA registry like ours, prevalence of TCAs is low and survival is poor. Registries like ours might not capture the true incidence. However, many individuals do survive and resuscitation in TCAs should not be seen futile.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper emerged because of the new emission rules for sulphur that were adopted by IMO in year 2008. This meant that the vessels in the future were required to run on fuels with lower sulphur content. One of the options was to desulphur the products more in the refineries. The purpose of this study was to find out what was done with the sulphur after the refineries, what it is used for, how the new regulations affected the sulphur market and what impacts it would have to the environment to extract more sulphur. It could be seen from the study that sulphur was used in many different areas and was an important product. Demand and production varied, but there were relatively large stocks at some locations, and it showed that these would become larger because of increased desulphurization in the future. Increased desulfurization gave some environmental consequences. The desulphurization itself led to increased emission of greenhouse gases. Also piles of sulfur were not something desirable from an environmental perspective. However, there were alternatives for storage that gave fewer problems and new uses for sulphur were under constant development.

    Abstract [en]

    International Maritime Organisation (IMO) have for many years worked to simplify and harmonise the reporting formalities for ships leaving and entering ports in international voyages. The purpose has been to minimize the amount of data and to simplify declarations and documents required port states. The latest action taken in Europe is the EU directive 2010/65/EU so called Maritime Single Window (MSW). This study examine the effects and change in work since Maritime Single Window was implemented in Europe for users connected to the Swedish maritime sector. A survey investigation form was used as method and presented as a questionnaire form with a total nr of 20 questions. Semi structured qualitative interviews were also conducted to compare and confirm the results from the questionnaire form. The study shows that the directive 2010/65/EU has resulted in general increased work for users of Maritime Single Window. The conclusion of the study shows that the increased work is generated by a not yet fulfilled purpose of the directive to harmonise and simplify reporting formalities for ships leaving and entering ports in international voyages.

    Abstract [en]

    Aquatic invasive species have spread around the world in ships’ ballast water tanks with dire consequences. To regulate this spreading, the International Maritime Organization implemented the Ballast Water Management Convention which forces ships to, within a certain time frame, install approved ballast water treatment systems. The implimentation of the Convention has been complex and shipping companies have had to face challenges of choosing suitable treatment systems for their ships and trading areas. For this study, qualitative interviews were conducted with representatives from Swedish tanker shipping companies to examine how the Convention has affected them. On what grounds different treatment techniques were chosen was also examined, as well as if installed treatment systems have met expectations. Results from the study show that companies have suffered economical impacts, have had difficulties handling the implementation of the Convention as well as difficulties finding reliable treatment systems. Furthermore, one respondent referred to a report submitted by Saudi Arabia where extensive ballast water sampling had been conducted on ships calling their ports. The report showed that a considerable amount of ships with approved ballast water treatment systems did not meet the required levels of organisms in the treated ballast water. The interviews confirm the report’s description of the treatment systems’ fundamental flaws.

    Abstract [en]

    This essay studies the causes of girting, i.e. accidents where tugboats get pulled down and capsizes by the vessel it is towing. The study uses 14 official accident reports about girting accidents all over the world. The HFACS-MA model is used to categorize the causes of the accident into a causal chain, in order to find out which categories are most frequently present in the accident reports.  The result shows that poorly planned tow operations (with inadequate planning and/or risk assessment), deficiencies in the organization’s documentation (i.e. manuals, instructions and procedures), and poor communication between the involved parties were the most frequently found factors for girting. In order to reduce the risk of girting, recommendations have been made that includes the importance of keeping documents up to date, maintain clear communication between the parties involved during towing operations and to plan each operation thoroughly, giving everyone involved the opportunity for feedback regarding the plan.

    The Swedish Maritime Administration is today the authority with the main responsibility inSweden regarding search and rescue where the pilot boat is one of the vessels involved.However, the current system of salvage is considered to have some deficiencies regarding therescue of persons from the water whom are unconscious or severely injured. The purpose of this study was that after an initial survey of the different systems for rescuing unconscious or severely injured people, examine what crew members from the Swedish Maritime Administrations pilot boats thinks about the systems and the difficulties surrounding the salvage. The interviews revealed that today's current system is not built to be practiced with orfor the rescue of someone who is unconscious or badly injured. The investigation also shows that the prevailing weather conditions and time are crucial factors for a successful rescue. The majority of the crewmembers consider that a system located in the stern with today's existing system is the combination of systems that could make the rescue work aboard the pilot boats easier and more efficient.

    Abstract [en]

    This report is regarding an electrical installation of an alarm system on a post fishing

    boat called Andromeda. The background of the installation was an earlier and

    inadequate alarm system that led to a motor failure. The ship was taken out of service

    and was sold to Björn Magndahl who rebuilt it to a yacht.

    The project was conducted partly by developing the existing systems, partly by

    documenting the work by means of electrical blue prints. Except the alarm systems, an

    installation of the frequency control unit for the bow thruster was installed.

    The installation was working fine and the outcome of the documentation was handed

    over in a form of a binder during the test drive of the systems and the assignment was

    approved.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper deals with challenges associated with handling scrubber waste in the port of Karlshamn and what various industry partners are doing to meet this growing demand. The main challenges have been the proportion of ships with scrubber, the amount of generated waste and waste characterisation. An understanding of these factors has been crucial in order to ascertain the aim of this study, which has been made with calculations based on leading manufacturer’s scrubber analyses and with an estimation of the quantity of ships with scrubber by examining AIS data from the Port of Karlshamn. In order to calculate the quantity of scrubber waste two different scenarios were established, which in turn produced two different outcomes. It has been shown that these two do not represent a significant effect for the waste handling in port. It has been established that the scrubber waste is hazardous waste and needs to be disposed in port without involvement of other types of waste. The amount of scrubber waste is relatively small compared to today’s waste handling in Swedish ports and can be managed with ease, this despite a potential rising demand for scrubbers in the future.

    Abstract

     

    When a vessel is to enter or leave a port, it usually needs to hire a pilot to guide the vessel. In Sweden approximately 33,000 pilotages are carried out every year, in the majority of these the pilots have boarded the ship by climbing on a pilot-ladder which have been rigged alongside the vessel's side. The study was conducted to investigate the risk factors that affect the safety of pilots and boatmen during the pilot transfer. The study was conducted with a qualitative approach in interview format. Interviews were conducted using an interview template based from previous literature in the subject. The study has been limited to Swedish pilots and boatmen. In the study, ten pilots and four boatmen participated in three Swedish pilot stations, which mainly handle different ship types and vessel sizes. In the study, the result shows that Swedish pilots and boatmen experience the pilot transfer operation as risky, especially in poorer weather conditions. The pilots and boatmen find it more risky for the pilot to disembark than to embark a vessel, as the pilots have more difficulty keeping track of their surroundings during this moment. The study shows that more vessels need to establish the international guidelines concerning pilot transfers and boarding arrangements, to ensure safe pilot transfers.

    Abstract [en]

    Thermosetting plastic is a toxic product if handled in a wrong way. Seaman belongs to a group of workers that use this product in their profession on board ships. It has been shown from other studies that workers from other professions do not take necessary safety precautions to protect themselves against thermosetting plastic. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find out the attitude towards thermosetting plastic work and its risk involved. The study is based on eight interviews with graduating students from the Master Mariner Program in Kalmar. The structure of the interviews was organized after different predetermined questions with low standardization. The result showed basically the same attitude among the respondents. Also, the result showed that recommended personal protective equipment was generally not used consistently during thermosetting plastic work. The main reason for this was the influence from other crews’ attitude and behavior. It is likely that the respondents’ attitude were enhanced by their willingness to comply with procedures onboard. Other factors that influenced their behavior were the lack of easy access to equipment, attitude and perception towards the risks with thermosetting plastic, the location and length of exposure.

    ABSTRAKT

    Besättningarna ombord på ett fartyg kan bestå av människor som kommer från olika delar av världen. Tillsammans ska de arbeta och leva ihop i väg från sina familjer samt vänner, för att föra fartyget från en plats till en annan. Utifrån denna bakgrund, var syftet med vår undersökning att belysa hur svenska sjökaptensstudenter upplever att multikulturella besättningar påverkar miljön ombord med avseende på social gemenskap och arbetsklimat jämfört med nationellt sammansatta besättningar. Undersökningen består av sju intervjuer vars struktur avsåg en låg grad av standardisering med sjökaptensstuderande från avgångsklassen. För att kunna förstå och skildra respondenternas upplevelser och erfarenheter valdes en kvalitativ metod. Resultatet visar att den största faktorn som påverkade miljön ombord var kommunikationssvårigheterna. Att inte kunna kommunicera via sitt modersmål försämrade möjligheterna att skapa en god social gemenskap och ett bra arbetsklimat i multikulturella besättningar jämfört med nationellt sammansatta besättningar.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate if employers see any difference in competence between a recently graduated deck-officer who has passed the three-year program which requires earlier able bodied seaman certificate or the four-year program where no previous experience is required. The difference between this programs is that the deck-officers from the three-year program has worked at sea before they began their studies, while most of the deck-officers from the four-year program is going to sea for the first time on their onboard training. To find out this, a qualitative interview study was conducted by using five Swedish and two Norwegian shipping companies. The Norwegian shipping companies were included in the study because many Swedish officers are employed within the Norwegian offshore industry. It was shown by the employers there were no differences in competencies between the deck-officers. The employers look more at social competence.

    Abstract [en]

    The world trade is increasing rapidly and so is the amount of transportation. With help of the internet it is now easier than ever to order a product which will be sent from the other side of the world. This study aims to investigate to which extent consumers consider what effects their behaviour will have on the environment and how interested they are in protecting the environment when ordering products by paying a higher price for a more environmentally friendly transport. This is done by conducting four interviews with customers of different age and asking questions about their attitudes towards a more expensive and environment friendly transport. More specifically, questions were asked about how much more they would be willing to pay for that kind of transport. Furthermore, questions were asked about what they know about the work that is being done and has been done to reduce the effects on the environment caused by shipping. The result shows that they are willing to pay a higher price for a more environmentally friendly transport. For this to be possible the price needs to be affordable and they need to have a trust in the company offering this kind of transport. There are differences among the interviewed persons in how much they are willing to pay depending on what product they are buying and what the cost is for the original transport cost. This study also shows that the respondents have a very limited knowledge about the work that is being done and has been done to benefit the environment within the shipping business.

    Abstract [en]

    In this thesis examines if officers on a passenger vessel experience that the Medical Care education is enough to be responsible for the medical care. I decided to investigate their opinion on the Medical Care education and the organization onboard.

     

    The study was a qualitative method where eight officers were interviewed to get an insight in how the medical care works on a Swedish passenger vessel. Both second officers and chief officers participated in this study.

     

    The study indicates that the education is enough but that the time interval between the renewals of the Medical Care certificate is too long for the officer responsible for the medical care on a passenger vessel. The officers would like to have one more medical care practice period between the renewals of the certificates to create a better routine with the medical care. The result shows that the best thing would be to hire a nurse or a doctor to be responsible for the medical care onboard.

    Abstract [en]

    We live in a world of climate change where finding a solution to reducing the emission of GHG is a continuous pursuit. To reduce the emission from global shipping IMO has adopted the SEEMP consequently making the shipping industry more energy efficient. With this in mind the purpose of this study has been to review the implementation and usage of the SEEMP among Swedish shipping companies trading oil. Furthermore, the views of the involved parties with regard to the SEEMP were also investigated. In order to deeply analyze the companies´ approach to the SEEMP a qualitative research method has been used. The study consists of four semi-structured interviews with sex persons from two shipping companies including both onshore and ship-based personnel. The result shows that the implementation has been carried out in consultation with their own classification societies and with the IMO guidelines in mind. They have also tried to take the opportunity to make their organization more energy efficient. Both companies welcomed the adoption of the SEEMP and were of the opinion that it shouldhave been introduced at an earlier stage. However, some barriers to the SEEMP have been found, for example the operational structure of the shipping industry.

    Abstract [en]

    Collision is one of the risks that exist for vessels traveling the seas despite the fact that there are international regulations, such as the Collision Regulations, put in place to prevent such occurrences. Through a literature study we have used the collision reports from two maritime investigation bureaus to identify which deviations from the Collision Regulations that contribute to collisions and how the deviations differ between different vessels, time of day, state of visibility and staffing on the bridge. When identifying which deviations from regulations that contributed to the collision we have used the investigation bureaus own conclusions as base. We picked two different bureaus so that we would be able to compare the results and see if there is a difference. In a majority of the collisions the colliding vessels had deviated from one or more of the Collision Regulations. The regulations that most vessels deviated from in situations that led to collisions were the regulations concerning lookout and assessment of the risk of collision. Our study show that onboard vessels the watch keeping officer should always have a lookout on the bridge and use this resource correctly. Concerning the assessment of risk of collision it is important that the watch keeping officer use his radar equipment correctly and know its limitations.

    Falling from heights on ships occurs even though safety equipment is used. The

    intent of this study was to find out what factors affect the safety on heights onboard

    ships. The study was conducted by interviews with ship’s officers, able seamen, a

    professional union and inspectors. The conclusion showed that there are some

    factors affecting the accidents where someone falls from a height onboard. The

    factors were usage, attitudes to the safety equipment, suitability, regulations and

    education. The findings indicated that safety equipment might not always have been

    used as reported, and that if it was used it might not have been used correctly. It

    appeared that it is important for the officers onboard to lead by example and to set

    an evident standard onboard to create an environment where safety equipment is

    used and used in a correct way.

    This study was conducted with the purpose of furthering the knowledge of collisionsinvolving Swedish icebreakers in the Baltic Sea. It strived to identify the causes and directeffects of this type of collision. It also sought to establish if regulations and operationalguidelines, governing Swedish icebreakers and icebreaker assistance, were sufficient and ifthey were being adhered to.The method used to accomplish this was a qualitative literature study of all data regardingSwedish icebreaker collisions from the archives of the Swedish Maritime Administration andthe Swedish Transport Agency. Several accident investigation authorities from around theworld assisted in developing a method for processing the raw data.Having processed and examined the data the prevalence of different causes contributing to thecollisions could be established. All collisions occurred during icebreaker assistance. It wasfound that the all encompassing cause of the collisions was the difficulties of evaluating theice conditions and the behavior that difficult ice conditions necessitated the vessels to adopt.It was further made clear that the direct effects for the vessels, their crew and the environmentwere of limited severity. It was also concluded that the regulations and operational guidelinesgoverning Swedish icebreaker assistance, were generally being adhered to, and weresatisfactory in enabling a sufficiently safe and effective icebreaker assistance service.

    The main focus of this study was to examine the current state of LNG, and its applications as an alternative fuel for industry, shipping and power production. Gathering of data, and the subsequent scrutiny of the collected material, was performed in accordance with the methodology of a literary study. The result offered an overall view of what has happened up until now. It also suggested what possible developments might follow in the near future. The purpose of the study was to describe how far the development has progressed, with regards to LNG and its infrastructure.

    The conclusions that could be drawn from the study were that things are moving forward. Some sectors have however reached further than others. Economic and environmental reasons appear as main driving factors for those who are considering LNG as a part of their plan of operations. Lack of infrastructure is said to be a key reason why LNG still hasn´t gained momentum. Numerous LNG-terminals have been built in North America and around northwestern Europé, including one in Sweden. More facilities are being built in the years to come as well, steadily improving the availability of LNG.

    The purpose of this study was to understand and describe master mariner students’ experiences of supervision during the performance of tasks necessary to achieve the intended learning outcomes for the first module of on board practical training. Semi structured personal interviews were made with eight freshman students between 25th of March and 5th of April 2013. These interviews were recorded and transcribed before being interpreted and structured into different categories. Strategic selection was used to select interviewees and these were interviewed using ”critical incident technique”. The result of this study shows that a supervision method that includes distinct instructions or demonstrations followed by correction and assessment is experienced in a positive way during the performance of certain tasks. In other cases, increased own influence has been experienced positively. The characteristics and requirements of a task affect the experience of the supervision method to a high degree. The study also shows that a lack of sufficient supervision can make it more difficult for the student to perform the tasks in the on board training manual and achieve the intended learning outcomes for on board practical training.

    Abstract

    Within the Swedish Master Mariner programme 360 days of onboard training are included. A supervisor is designated on board during the internship, with the task of helping to develop and support the student. The aim of this study is to illuminate: the supervisor’s experiences of the student’s ability to handle their time on board, their thoughts about their own role, and the arrangement of the onboard training. This is a qualitative study in which seven supervisors, active in four different shipping companies were interviewed. The selection of this type of study was based on the fact that interviews would capture the respondents’ perceptions and experiences, and at the same time allow for them to develop their reasoning. The selection of respondents in this study was limited to Swedish supervisors for Master Mariner students employed in Swedish-owned product tankers. The study reveals that the supervisors are positive about their role and the opportunities that the training generates for the students, and also about their own influence on their future colleagues. The study also reveals that students may gain more from the internship by utilising their rest days. Each student has a total of 52 rest days during the internship.

    For the introduction of new waterways visibility is of importance when choosing the appropriate sea mark. Today the choice of sea mark is very subjective due to the lack of research regarding the visual detection distance of the ones used in Swedish waters. Safety is jeopardised if a sea mark is used with a detection distance that is too short, whereas a more effective sea mark leads to higher costs. The purpose was that the study would help in creating objective methods when marking waterways by investigating the visual detection distance of different floating sea marks. A methodological triangulation was performed in the form of a field study on board a ship, and a questionnaire was answered by pilots. The field study revealed that the buoys generally had a further detection distance compared to the light spar buoys. The detection distance varied according to the sea marks shape, height, width, colour, eye height, light angle and also the background behind the sea mark. The result also showed interesting differences and similarities amongst the pilots’ answers regarding the factors which where perceived to affect the visual detection distance.

    Detta är en undersökande uppsats om hur landströmsanslutningen har fungerat på Stena Vision under 2012-2013, angående kostnad och miljöpåverkan för att producera ström i land, istället för att producera ström ombord med fartygets generatorer.

    Genom att räkna fram avgasvärdena skapades en bild av hur stor miljöpåverkan generatordrift har. Naturvårdsverkets beräkningsmodell användes för att få en så exakt beräkning som möjligt och för att jämföra avgasutsläppet mot den globala miljöpåverkan.

    Stena Vision minskade sina utsläpp av växthusgaser med 290 ton per år genom att använda landströmsanslutningen. Det kunde även påvisas en minskning av CO2, SO2, NOx och PM10.

    Kostnaden för landströmmen varierar väldigt mycket från månad till månad. Detta är direkt orsakat av att nätavgiften är en stor del av kostnaden och vissa månader har inte landströmsanslutningen använts i den utsträckningen som man skulle ha kunnat. Att använda fartygets generatorer har kostat 1,47 SEK/kWh och att använda landströmsanslutningen har kostat 2,06 SEK/kWh.

    Genom att även ansluta Stena Spirit på den befintliga landströmsanläggningen gick kostnaden per kWh ner till 1,53 SEK/kWh för landström.

    Abstract

    This study consists of a light measuring on Kalmar maritime university vessel,”Calmare Nyck-el”, and compares the results with benchmarks from Transportstyrelsen and Arbetsmiljöver-ket. The measurements can be analysed in two different aspects one as educational premises and the other one as a vessel. General illumination and spot illumination are the kind of light-ning that have been checked. The illumination has been gauged by a luxmeter placed on a tripod. Datum points have established a grid in all premises by directions from authorities, the amount of datum points is decided by the dimensions of the area. Some of the areas and spaces meet the guide standards and requirements with regards towards to general illumina-tion and spot illumination. The values were much better in the premises that have been sup-plemented with new light fixtures.

    This paper presents results from a case study at a Swedish papermill. The study is part of a larger ongoing research project aiming to investigatevisual ergonomics in control room environments. Visual conditions were measuredand evaluated in five control rooms, and nine process operators answeredquestions about perceived workload and visual experience.The participating operators rated their mental workload as being the highest,but also mentioned a high physical load and time pressure. Six operators indicatedthat they had work-related eye problems and experienced pronounced eyefatigue, as well as eye discomfort, sore eyes and blurred vision.In one of the visited control rooms, where the operators indicated that theyoften experienced eye problems, the operators were clearly subjected to glare.Light was reflected within the field of view from a steel plate outside the controlroom windows. Compared to recommendations for office workplaces, the illuminancelevels were low in all control rooms except one, causing contrast glaresince computer screens generally had a higher luminance. Low contrasts werealso identified in the computer screens between background and characters. In conclusion, the measured visual conditions could be related to an increasedvisual load, leading to visual discomfort. This may lead to pain in the neck, shoulders, and contribute towards an unnecessary high mental load. Recommendations are suggested of how lighting conditions van be improved.

    Computer work is a visually demanding task associated with adverse eye symptoms. Frequent use of digitaldisplays is known to cause a deterioration of the so-called binocular control. Direct glare further reduces thecapacity for binocular coordination during computer work, leading to reduced reading ability and increased eyesymptoms.The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different luminance levels of direct glare on binoculareye movement control and reading ability in a computer work environment.Sixteen participants with normal binocular vision performed equal reading tasks in a balanced study. Threecontrolled lighting conditions of direct glare (2000, 4000 and 6000 cd/m2) were tested, in addition to no glare.After each trial, the participants answered survey questionnaires regarding their understanding of the text, aswell as their subjective experience of workload and perceived vision. Horizontal fixation disparity (FD) wasmeasured before and after the reading tasks to evaluate binocular eye movement control.When comparing the responses of visual experience, a significant difference in reported eye symptoms wasfound between lighting conditions. Based on the variation (SD), a significant difference was found within meanvalues of repeated measurements of horizontal FD and a significantly higher variation in a comparison of initialFD values measured during lighting conditions of no glare, to final measured values in all three glare conditions.Reading ability was found to be significantly negative affected with the adversity of lighting conditions.This study supports the contention that binocular eye movement control is reduced caused by direct glare.Even lower degree of disability glare caused eye symptoms. The results establish the argument that working withflat screens raises visual demands.

    This project investigates the possibilities of being able to control a generators reactive power production by controlling the excitation current from a PLC. As a method for controlling from PLC, it was decided that a signal of 0-5V should be used. In order to regulate the magnetization, and hence in the long term the reactive power, it was decided that the existing manual potentiometer would be replaced by two parallel-connected digital potentiometers of the type MCP4261 controlled by a microcontroller. The fact that the digital potentiometers would be connected in parallel was decided after a feasibility study which showed that in this way it would result in a more accurate regulation without any restriction on the usable control span. Practical testing of microcontrollers and digital potentiometers provided a satisfactory result with a good resolution.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the study was to investigate Swedish ports possibility to invest in onshore power supply equipment and pay back the initial investment with income from selling electricity to arriving ships. The study is a systematic review based on a sys­tematic search and presented as a theoretical case study. The review was based on five studies that describe costs of providing a port with onshore power supply.

     

    The first part of the findings is calculations of the investment cost for onshore power supply for one single berth. Next the calculations of the costs to generate a certain amount of electricity on board was compared with the costs of buying said amount of electricity from shore providers. Then a profit margin if the electricity was sold for the same price as it would have cost to generate onboard in diesel generators was calculated. Finally the in­crease to the electricity sale price a port could add and still repay the initial investment over five years was calculated. This electricity sale price was then compared to what it would have cost to generate onboard.

     

    The findings shows that there is a good possibility for the theoretical standard quay to refund their investment in onshore power supply over five years, under circumstances where ships visiting the port are equipped to receive the electricity.

    Abstract [en]

    The study took place at a food corporation in Växjö, Sweden. It describes a building that contains four tanks in which glucose syrup is stored. The purpose of the study was to calculate the amount of heat that leaves the building and the amount of heat that is supplied by the installed heating equipment. Before the calculations could be implemented, all the systems that supply the building with heat had to be examined. With a small amount of information from earlier studies, the work to gather all the data necessary for the calculations began. Difficulties in defining many of the variable values resulted in that they had to be estimated before further calculations could proceed. The final result shows that the existing heating equipment is sufficient enough to replace the heat that is lost by convection through the walls and roof of the building. The conclusion was that the probability of the result was low because of the many possible errors that estimation of several values causes. The most useful result of the study was probably the course of action, in which the calculations were done. Lastly some ideas for future studies are presented.

    When students of the Nautical Science and the Marine Engineering Programmes are on the ship-based internship, this means limited opportunities for physical activity. Factors such as long hours of work, bad weather and a lack of sleep can affect the students while at sea. Recommendations from the Public Health Authority mean that adult persons from the age of 18 need to exercise a physical activity at least 150 minutes per week at moderate intensity so as not to become too sedentary. According to the Maritime Labor Convention, there will be a leisure space aboard ships over 3000 GT, which means that there are opportunities for physical activity on board these vessels. The purpose of this survey was to describe the physical activity of students when they are on a ship-based internship and when they have campus-based education. The purpose is also to compare the students of the Nautical Science Programme to the students of the Marine Engineering Programme when it comes to physical activity. The study also aimed to show whether the physically active students used some form of exercise-related dietary supplements. The method consisted of a quantitative study in the form of questionnaires with fixed response alternatives and questions with a graded approach. The sample consisted of 90 respondents from the Nautical Science Programme to the students of the Marine Engineering Programme at a Naval institute. Primary data was compiled in frequency tables to be able to read how the distribution in the variable looked. In order to clarify the distribution of the variable more clearly, the primary data was finally compiled in bar charts. The result showed that the respondents were more physically active when they were on the ship-based practice than when they were on campus. The increase in the physical activity of the Marine Engineering 'respondents appeared clearer while the Nautical Science respondents increase was marginal. Respondents performed more training sessions a week but shortened the length of the workout. The majority of respondents at the naval institute were physically active despite factors such as weather, long hours of work and insufficient sleep affecting them. The study also showed that about half of the respondents who performed physical activity used exercise-related dietary supplements in connection with the exercise. The most common dietary supplement in connection with training that the respondents used was protein powder. The respondents' reason for using dietary supplements was because they got more out of their training.

    In recent years Swedish ports have had to consider a number of new products on the market that are claiming to make the mooring of vessels more efficient. This paper investigates the arguments that the representatives of Swedish ports have used when discussing the investment of these alternative mooring arrangements. To obtain these arguments interviews has been conducted with the representatives from a selection of Swedish ports. It is shown that the ports are generally in favor of increasing efficiency using the new equipment, but that the uncertainty involved in new, unproven technologies have so far prevented them from taking the full plunge into an investment. The most prominent arguments against investing is that the investment cost is too high in relation to the earnings and that the investment is made by the port while the shipowner reaps the benefit.

    Certain types of cyber attacks have increased between 2015 and 2016, this is acknowledged both on land in the shipping sector. Given the unique situation of shipping, it is of interest to investigate how shipping companies have chosen to protect themselves from cyberattacks. Four shipping companies have been interviewed regarding the cybersecurity of their vessels. The results of the interviews have since been compared against IMO's guidelines released in 2016 to investigate whether there are deficiencies in cybersecurity on swedish ships. The results show that there are shortcomings in several of the shipping companies interviewed, primarily in the form of training of personnel. The result also shows that there are clear contrasts between smaller shipping companies and larger shipping companies, where the smaller shipping companies have fewer measures in place while the larger shipping companies have more to prevent or handle a cyberattack.

    The aim of this study is to investigate how the next generation of Swedish officers relate to the transformal and transactional leadership at sea and if there is any differences in this relationship between the genders. The theoretical framework is based on the basis of the transformal and transactional leadership styles. For the method, we choses to use a qualitative approach and through semi-structured interviews with elements of scenario questions, we gathered materials and information from aspiring officers at Linnaeus University in Kalmar. The result confirms that a strong organizational culture do not take into account the personal relationships on board and that the lack of leadership is not conducive to building a functioning fellowship. Due to that the women answered more along the lines of the transformal leadership and so did the men but not to the same extent, we can not reliably support if there is any difference in the relationship between the genders.

    Syftet med det här arbetet var att kartlägga rekryteringsprocessen i svenska rederier och bemanningsbolag av maskinbefäl. För att ta reda på detta skickades det ut ett antal enkäter till personalrekryterarna i respektive rederi/bemanningsbolag. Studien är en kvantitativ undersökning för att få in ett så stort underlag som möjligt och därefter kunna få fram ett trovärdigt resultat. Resultatet blev att rekryteringsprocessen har påverkats av utflaggningen av fartygen och då framför allt för juniorbefälen. Det som personalrekryterarna ansåg som mest betydelsefullt vid nyrekrytering av maskinbefäl är rekommendationer från redan anställda i rederiet/bemanningsbolaget och fullständig sjöingenjörsexamen. Arbetsförmedlingens tjänster användes i mindre grad på grund av det dåliga urvalet och inte heller available position-sidan på rederiernas/bemanningsbolagens hemsida vid rekrytering av nya maskinbefäl.

    This work has been carried out to investigate the potential of the Swedish Maritime Administration to use helicopters instead of pilot launches (boats) to assign pilots to ships. The aim has been to estimate this process from an economic perspective with use of the Payback method. The method has been utilized in an exploratory way. Financial data was requested from current operations in allocating the pilot to vessels and these were compared with the estimated costs of the Maritime Administration SAR helicopters operating over the same transport. No attention has been paid to the possible process improvements that this could lead to, simply what the cost of the same transport would be with the new mode of transport (helicopter). The result is illuminated from three horizons. How it is seen from the piloting side, how it is seen from the helicopter function's side and ultimately what it will mean for the Swedish Maritime Administration as a whole. The conclusion reached is that the piloting function will have higher costs for transport, helicopter operations may be less able to exercise within the same economic framework and that the Swedish Maritime Administration could potentially save 17 million SEK per annum by cutting back on pilot launch costs.

    Because of the plans to replace the old sewage treatment plant in Kalmar, which has come to the end of its life cycle, and due to new requirements of emergency supply from SCCA (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency), the possibility of using the biogas on the plant itself was evaluated.

    In this study, the profitability of two alternatives was evaluated. To invest in a biogas powered generator to produce electric power and heat, which would create savings in purchased electricity and district heating and work as an emergency generator, or to continue selling the biogas and invest in a diesel-powered emergency generator.

    Cost estimates of biogas powered generators and the equipment needed for using the biogas as fuel was required from dealers and manufacturers. The cost estimates were then compiled in a LCC. The calculated savings and the income from selling the biogas was then added to the LCC, the alternatives was then compared to each other.

    The study concludes that the most profitable alternative, based on the calculations, is to invest in a biogas powered generator and use the electricity and waste heat on the sewage plant.

    Today, the shipping industry faces important environmental challenges to reduce the impact of sea transport to the marine environment. In order to enhance compliance and encourage safe and efficient maritime operations, the implementation of a safety culture in both shore organisation and on board ships has been advocated. Similarly, it can be argued that a conscious ‘greening’ of an organisation’s culture may be necessary in order to meet legislative and societal demands, as well as embrace environmentally responsible values, beliefs and behaviours. The present pilot study describes the development and evaluation of a model designed to capture attitudes and perception among seafarers with regards to proactive environmental work in the shipping industry. The overall aim of the model is to enable measurement of the extent to which a ‘green culture’ is present within the shipping industry, and to identify factors that either facilitate or act as barriers to a green culture. Evaluation of the model was done through qualitative individual and focus group interviews with, in all, 13 active Swedish seafarers during the autumn of 2014. The findings show that the model captures the sought after mechanisms fairly well and shows some promise. Future work is needed to further refine and test the model in a larger setting, in order to provide a robust picture of the seafarers’ view on ‘green’ shipping.

Medan sjöfart och fiske regleras med breda penseldrag, behöver energiutvinning, vattenbruk och sandutvinning söka miljötillstånd för varje enskilt projekt. Med havsplanering finns nu möjlighet att planera för alla anspråk på en gång.
