Trust in India and Sweden: An experimental examination of the Fukuyama conjecture2008In: Cross-cultural research, ISSN 1069-3971, E-ISSN 1552-3578, Cross-Cultural Research, Vol. 42, no 4, p. 420-429Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The authors test the proposition, put forward by Francis Fukuyama, that the higher the level of trust in a country the less corrupt, the more developed, and wealthier its economy will be. They study trust and voluntary cooperation using a one-shot and three-person public goods game experiment in India and Sweden. The results, in line with the proposition, show that the average contribution is significantly larger in Sweden, implying a higher level of trust and cooperation in Sweden than in India. This article provides further evidence on the relationship between trust and economic development. This study differs from previous ones in that it uses a multilateral game experiment to study trust and cooperation rather than a bilateral game experiment. Furthermore, it provides evidence from two countries not studied before in this context.

Choices at various levels of uncertainty: An experimental test of the restated diversification theorem2006In: Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, ISSN 0895-5646, E-ISSN 1573-0476, Vol. 33, no 3, p. 183-196Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Our ``Restated diversification theorem'' (Skogh and Wu, 2005) says that risk-averse agents may pool risks efficiently without assignment of subjective probabilities to outcomes, also at genuine uncertainty. It suffices that the agents presume that they face equal risks. Here, the theorem is tested in an experiment where the probability of loss, and the information about this probability, varies. The result supports our theorem. Moreover, it tentatively supports an evolutionary theory of the insurance industry--starting with mutual pooling at uncertainty, turning into insurance priced ex ante when actuarial information is available.

    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses a social and cognitive approach to the planning and implementation of knowledge support systems in a health care organization. A case study is presented and then discussed using a broad theoretical frame of reference gathered from the knowledge management field. The discussion is an illustration of the delicate trade-off between social and cognitive perspectives of a development project. The assumption is that these two aspects must be handled in an interconnected and balanced way. The aim of the paper is to illustrate the use of multiple perspectives as a tool for understanding how this problem can be dealt with.

    Abstract [en]

Knowledge management, as an academic area, is maturing; however, there are still problems connected with both the diversity of the theoretical base and the gap between theory and its practical application. In this paper we tackle these problems by reviewing a number of basic knowledge management theories with the intention of formulating a more integrated and at the same time practical planning framework. The focus guiding the literature selection is on basic theories about the nature of knowledge management, theories that expose the complex nature of knowledge in organizations. We examine these theories and try to understand what could be perceived as the paradoxical nature of these theories. Here we understand a paradox as something seemingly self-contradictory though perhaps actually well-founded statement. We focus on four areas or themes: 1) knowledge as the key resource of a business, 2) knowledge as a competitive force and source of growth, 3) the nature of the management of a knowledge resource, and 4) the management of knowledge workers. From a practical point of view, the conflicting arguments of these theories can be seen as possible strategic options. Based on these discussions we then formulate a framework, or what might be called a strategic option generator. As a concluding discussion we focus on the contribution of IS/IT to the realization of the different possible strategic options. This is done on a rather general level, where we examine the possibilities of IS/IT in relation to the paradoxes.

    Abstract [en]

This report discusses information systems as support systems for knowledge workers. A case is presented discussing the introduction of two types of information systems into an organisation as support for knowledge workers. The case is interpreted using a set of theories from knowledge theory and the area of knowledge management. The aim of this report is to give empirical input to the understanding of the conditions of knowledge work and information systems. An interpretative framework is presented consisting of a set of perspectives on knowledge work and the use of information systems.

An Evaluation of a KM Diagnostic Instrument2007In: Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Perspectives in Business Information Research - BIR'2007 / [ed] Nummenmaa, J., & Söderström, E., Tampere, Finland: Department of Computer Sciences, University of Tampere , 2007, p. 7-21Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Knowledge management is today an established approach to improve and renew organizations. The right use of information systems are often essential element in a successful KM strategy, however creating the right mix of KM activities and system is difficult and failures are frequent. Getting a good grip of the current situation and the special condition of the organization is therefore essential. In this paper we study an initiating questionnaire, taken from the KM literature, with a background in US management consulting industry. The aim of the paper is to evaluate the questionnaire, from a Swedish perspective. This is done with the aim to search for more general advice for anyone wanting to adapt and use such a questionnaire in their own situation. For this purpose, a number of applications of the questionnaire is presented and investigated. The outcome of the study is an initial assessment of the usefulness of the questionnaire and some recommendations for further use and research into the questionnaire. The usefulness seems to depend on the situation of persons that the questionnaire is given to. The analysis shows that the questionnaire seems to fit rather well to companies that were included in the study, especially on a management level. However, some possible problem areas were also discovered, the background, motivation and work situation of some personnel group could interfere with the effectiveness of the questionnaire.

A Framework for Strategic Balancing of Knowledge Management Initiatives2003In: Proceedings of the 36th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2003 / [ed] Ralph Sprague, IEEE Press, 2003Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Enterprises need to understand the impact of different types of knowledge management (KM) approaches on business strategy, and how they interact with other types of initiatives to produce synergistic effects. The hypothesis of this paper is that a model based on the balanced scorecard approach (BSC) can be used to balance the diverse set of KM approaches that are described in the KM literature. A literature study has been carried out connecting general examples of BSC objectives to KM approaches and applications. The resulting framework indicates that each of the major aspects of KM has its place in the BSC model, and thus has a role in the success of the company from a strategic viewpoint. A KM strategy according to this perspective should articulate how a company intends to strike a balance between different KM approaches. Contributions of the framework to related theory are discussed and illustrated by using a rich case from literature.

    Abstract [en]

Over recent decades many health care organisations have "modernised" their management accounting systems by using the balanced scorecard (BSC). However, public health care involves multi-dimensional goals and resolving conflicts of interest. The question is whether a management control system based on measurements is suitable in a health care context. Light can be shed on this question using a study of the application of a BSC over a ten-year period at Hogland Hospital. The study shows that the BSC and measurements of output and behaviour became a way of approaching unanswered questions about processes and quality development. Medical professionals with management responsibility, in co-operation with medical professionals responsible for different specialities, determined measures and targets and the measurements were integrated into activity processes and affected activities.

Management accounting in public and private hospitals:: a comparative study2004In: Studies in managerial and financial accounting, ISSN 1479-3512, Vol. 14, no 5, p. 427-445Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates whether hospitals run as limited companies have more cost conscious and organizationally committed clinic superintendents when compared with public hospitals. Also, if the management accounting systems differ in the hospitals studied. Using a questionnaire, two hospital companies are compared with two hospitals controlled by political boards.

According to the analysis there are no significant differences between clinic superintendents in public hospitals and hospital companies. This is true in terms of organizational commitment and cost consciousness. However, the study indicates that participation in the hospital budget-setting process and satisfaction with financial information both affect the superintendents' cost consciousness.

Kulturell mångfald i förskola: Hur förskollärare anser sig behandla barns olika kulturer i en gemenskap som förskola2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract (English)

Background: Illegal copying increases rapidly. Software-, game- and music industry are experiencing troubled times at the moment. Today, a practically ignorant person would have no problems to get hold of a newly published record before it reaches the stores because of the

illegal copying. This problem is made possible due to that no good solution exists. Copy protection isn’t good enough and peer-to-peer-networks are bigger than ever. In this work we will examine specifically the music industry.

Purpose: We will specialize in the term of illegal copying. Further we want to enlight and inform the music industry as well as the users of the problem and it´s future. We hope the result we will achieve can be a foundation for further research.

Realization: We have gathered our information from articles on the Internet and also from updated literature. Interviews were made over the phone with Magnus Mårtensson, IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), Anna Burén, lawyer of copyright at

Swedish Radio, Per Sandin, General manager EMI marketing and also a lot of Internetsuppliers. We have also compilated an inquiry which has been replied to by many people.

Conclusion: Many of the buyers from the past consider the cost of a CD far too high. Instead they have discovered the illegal copying and its unlimited functions. They have also realized how easy you can get new music without reprisals, which mostly depends on the vague and

not to scary laws. Music companies are losing money and therefore they raise the prize of a single CD, simultaneously as they work to find the perfect copy protection. The future looks uncertain and for the moment, those who are copying along with peer-to-peer-networks have

    all the trumps.

Keywords: mp3, CD, copy-protection, peer-to-peer-networks, copyright, illegal copying, music companies.

Time performance comparison in determining the weak parts in wooden logs2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The steadily increasing demand of wood forces sawmills to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their equipments. The weak parts and the twist in wooden logs have been documented as the most common and crucial defect in sawn lumber.

In this thesis we are going to implement a program which is able to determine the weak parts in wooden logs. The implementation will be in two languages C++ and Matlab. Parts of the program are going to be implemented sometimes by C++ and sometimes by Matlab therefore different designs are going to be tested. The aim of this thesis is to check whether these designs will meet the real time bound of 10 m/s.

The result shows that there is a huge difference in time performance for the different designs. Therefore, different discretization levels were used in order to meet the deadline of 10m/s. We found that in order to get better speed one should calculate the matrix for the function F and the Jacobian function J by using C++ not by Matlab. Also we found that when we called functions from one language to another an extra time is added.

Methods for Path loss Prediction2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Large scale path loss modeling plays a fundamental role in designing both fixed and mobile radio systems. Predicting the radio coverage area of a system is not done in a standard manner. Wireless systems are expensive systems. Therefore, before setting up a system one has to choose a proper method depending on the channel environment, frequency band and the desired radio coverage range. Path loss prediction plays a crucial role in link budget analysis and in the cell coverage prediction of mobile radio systems. Especially in urban areas, increasing numbers of subscribers brings forth the need for more base stations and channels. To obtain high efficiency from the frequency reuse concept in modern cellular systems one has to eliminate the interference at the cell boundaries. Determining the cell size properly is done by using an accurate path loss prediction method. Starting from the radio propagation phenomena and basic path loss models this thesis aims at describing various accurate path loss prediction methods used both in rural and urban environments. The Walfisch-Bertoni and Hata models, which are both used for UHF propagation in urban areas, were chosen for a detailed comparison. The comparison shows that the Walfisch-Bertoni model, which involves more parameters, agrees with the Hata model for the overall path loss.

    Abstract [en]

The Results of this thesis was the creation of two designed house variants with a module to

all the apartments. In addition till the first module there are three other modules of

apartments that can be put in the houses if it so needs. The house are volume prefabricated

and are placed on site in a way that it create an enclosure of the area which faces against the

nature and car parks also lies hidden behind these houses.

For the actual structure, a cross beam was created to carry the floor above and it is support

by all four walls. The structure between the first and the second floor has no "syll" but

instead there are two differently alternative to linking the floors in order so that it will not

move. The reason with this solution was that there will not be any subsidence when the

forces from above are pressed down ward. The forces are instead directly down to the next

timber frame system. This can happen when the real estate's owner might want to build

more floors on the house than the present two floors house when there is no land to build

and spaces are needed in the future.

Human Resource Management: A comparative study of Carrier Refrigeration in Ingelstad (Sweden) and in Jászárokszállás (Hungary)2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

HRM is an important issue whether companies are successful or not in the global market. Many authors have different views on how important culture and local factors are and to what extent it should be taken into consideration when managing units. Taylor et al (1996) state that companies can use three different approaches of HRM: adaptive, integrative or exportive. Considering whether or not culture is a factor taken into consideration when shaping HRM in two different affiliates, three hypotheses were formulated:

Hypothesis 1: Culture and local aspects are to a large extent taken into consideration when shaping Human Resource Management.

Hypothesis 2: Culture and local aspects are to some extent taken into consideration when shaping Human Resource Management.

Hypothesis 3: Culture and local aspects are not taken into consideration when shaping Human Resource Management.

Our purpose is to confirm or reject the formulated hypotheses by identifying, analyzing and comparing the shaping of HRM in Carrier Refrigeration in Ingelstad (Sweden) and in Jászárokszállás (Hungary) regarding:

    • how different types of responsibility are decentralized

    • how employees communicate

    • how employees are motivated & rewarded

In the aspects of responsibility, communication and motivation & reward the three different approaches are seen. When each aspect is summarized the different approaches are seen as follows; responsibility shows overall an exportive approach, communication shows overall an integrative approach and motivation & reward shows overall an integrative approach.

Since two of the three aspects show an integrative approach the second hypothesis (H2) is confirmed which means that the first (H1) and the third (H3) hypotheses are rejected. The hypothesis that is valid is formulated as follows:

Culture and local aspects are to some extent taken into consideration when shaping Human Resource Management.

WBD – Web Based Diagnostics: Identifierande av parametrar på CAN-bussen2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This abstract describes the bachelor degree thesis in computer technology at Växjö University written by Philip Albertson during the spring term of 2007. At the company BSR in Växjö, Sweden there is a new project under development called WBD – Web based diagnostics. The aim of the project is to make car diagnostics available to ordinary people at a decent cost. The system consists of three parts; a module to plug in the car, a server to handle the information and a client to allow the customers to reach the information about their car. My part in this project was to specify how to reach certain parameters on the CAN-bus in cars from VAG (Volkswagen Auto Group) and Saab. The company was satisfied with the results since they provided a good basis to further develop the module prototype built by the company EDAB (Elektronik Design AB) in Sundsvall, Sweden.

Från socialbidrag till äldreförsörjningsstöd.: En reform ur äldre invandrares perspektiv.2008Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In 2003 the Swedish parliament decided to incorporate maintenance

support for the elderly within the framework of the state social insurance

system. Maintenance support for the elderly entails that individuals who,

due to too short a period of residence in Sweden, do not qualify themselves

for a full guarantee pension and thus have the right to receive

benefits after completion of an income test. A large proportion of these

people previously received individually incometested social benefits.

Maintenance support for the elderly and how it is perceived by the elderly

is the focus of the study. The overall aim of the study is to gain

knowledge about what it means for immigrants who moved in later life

to be the subject of a transfer from a selective benefit system to one

where more general principles apply. More specifically the aim concerns

what it means for their possibilities for gaining access to social rights and

what it means for their relationship with the Swedish welfare state. The

study’s empirical material consists of two parts. The first part contains

register data from the social services register of the National Board of

Health and Social Welfare and the social insurance register of the Swedish

Social Insurance Board. The second consists of interviews with

eleven foreign-born elderly persons who previously received social

benefits and now receive maintenance support for the elderly. The

analysis of the register data indicates that one-fifth of the target group

actually includes people born in Sweden while the rest are immigrants

arriving in Sweden in later life. For most of those in this latter group the

maintenance support is their only source of financial support while it is a

supplement for the Swedish-born elderly recipients. The results show

that of those, who previously received social benefits and where the

maintenance support is their only source of financial support, about onefifth

received a smaller amount of benefit after the reform. The interview

study indicates the existence of a gap between what the respondents

express as needs of more individual considerations both in terms of the

contact with the administrating authority and the maintenance support’s

monetary content and how the elderly perceive that these needs are provided

for. In order to try to understand this gap the result was analysed

by using a number of major theoretical concepts such as universalism,

stigma and shame, and social citizenship, public identity and recognition.

The conclusions of the study is that a comprehension of the gap can be

found in the standardised design and administration of the maintenance

support and in the socio-economic context that immigrants coming to

Sweden in later life find themselves in.

Operator calculus for p-adic valued symbols and quantization2009In: Rendicoti Del Seminario Matematico, ISSN 0373-1243, Vol. 67, no 2, p. 137-150Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this short review is to attract the attention of the pseudo-differentialcommunity to possibilities in the development of operator calculus for symbols (dependingon p-adic conjugate variables) taking values in fields of p-adic numbers. Essentials of thiscalculus were presented in works of the authors of this paper in order to perform p-adic valuedquantization. Unfortunately, this calculus still has not attracted a great deal of attentionfrom pure mathematicians, although it opens new and interesting domains for the theory ofpseudo-differential operators.

    Abstract [en]

This review covers an important domain of p-adic mathematical physics — quantum mechanics with p-adic valued wave functions. We start with basic mathematical constructions of this quantum model: Hilbert spaces over quadratic extensions of the field of p-adic numbers ℚ p , operators — symmetric, unitary, isometric, one-parameter groups of unitary isometric operators, the p-adic version of Schrödinger’s quantization, representation of canonical commutation relations in Heisenberg andWeyl forms, spectral properties of the operator of p-adic coordinate. We also present postulates of p-adic valued quantization. Here observables as well as probabilities take values in ℚ p . A physical interpretation of p-adic quantities is provided through approximation by rational numbers.
