Kulturell mångfald i förskola: Hur förskollärare anser sig behandla barns olika kulturer i en gemenskap som förskola2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Human Resource Management: A comparative study of Carrier Refrigeration in Ingelstad (Sweden) and in Jászárokszállás (Hungary)2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

HRM is an important issue whether companies are successful or not in the global market. Many authors have different views on how important culture and local factors are and to what extent it should be taken into consideration when managing units. Taylor et al (1996) state that companies can use three different approaches of HRM: adaptive, integrative or exportive. Considering whether or not culture is a factor taken into consideration when shaping HRM in two different affiliates, three hypotheses were formulated:

Hypothesis 1: Culture and local aspects are to a large extent taken into consideration when shaping Human Resource Management.

Hypothesis 2: Culture and local aspects are to some extent taken into consideration when shaping Human Resource Management.

Hypothesis 3: Culture and local aspects are not taken into consideration when shaping Human Resource Management.

Our purpose is to confirm or reject the formulated hypotheses by identifying, analyzing and comparing the shaping of HRM in Carrier Refrigeration in Ingelstad (Sweden) and in Jászárokszállás (Hungary) regarding:

    • how different types of responsibility are decentralized

    • how employees communicate

    • how employees are motivated & rewarded

In the aspects of responsibility, communication and motivation & reward the three different approaches are seen. When each aspect is summarized the different approaches are seen as follows; responsibility shows overall an exportive approach, communication shows overall an integrative approach and motivation & reward shows overall an integrative approach.

Since two of the three aspects show an integrative approach the second hypothesis (H2) is confirmed which means that the first (H1) and the third (H3) hypotheses are rejected. The hypothesis that is valid is formulated as follows:

Culture and local aspects are to some extent taken into consideration when shaping Human Resource Management.

Från socialbidrag till äldreförsörjningsstöd.: En reform ur äldre invandrares perspektiv.2008Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In 2003 the Swedish parliament decided to incorporate maintenance

support for the elderly within the framework of the state social insurance

system. Maintenance support for the elderly entails that individuals who,

due to too short a period of residence in Sweden, do not qualify themselves

for a full guarantee pension and thus have the right to receive

benefits after completion of an income test. A large proportion of these

people previously received individually incometested social benefits.

Maintenance support for the elderly and how it is perceived by the elderly

is the focus of the study. The overall aim of the study is to gain

knowledge about what it means for immigrants who moved in later life

to be the subject of a transfer from a selective benefit system to one

where more general principles apply. More specifically the aim concerns

what it means for their possibilities for gaining access to social rights and

what it means for their relationship with the Swedish welfare state. The

study’s empirical material consists of two parts. The first part contains

register data from the social services register of the National Board of

Health and Social Welfare and the social insurance register of the Swedish

Social Insurance Board. The second consists of interviews with

eleven foreign-born elderly persons who previously received social

benefits and now receive maintenance support for the elderly. The

analysis of the register data indicates that one-fifth of the target group

actually includes people born in Sweden while the rest are immigrants

arriving in Sweden in later life. For most of those in this latter group the

maintenance support is their only source of financial support while it is a

supplement for the Swedish-born elderly recipients. The results show

that of those, who previously received social benefits and where the

maintenance support is their only source of financial support, about onefifth

received a smaller amount of benefit after the reform. The interview

study indicates the existence of a gap between what the respondents

express as needs of more individual considerations both in terms of the

contact with the administrating authority and the maintenance support’s

monetary content and how the elderly perceive that these needs are provided

for. In order to try to understand this gap the result was analysed

by using a number of major theoretical concepts such as universalism,

stigma and shame, and social citizenship, public identity and recognition.

The conclusions of the study is that a comprehension of the gap can be

found in the standardised design and administration of the maintenance

support and in the socio-economic context that immigrants coming to

Sweden in later life find themselves in.

Hälsa bland invandrare i Sverige i ett långtidsperspektiv2006In: Flervetenskapliga perspektiv i migrationsforskning: Årsbok 2006 från forskningsprofilen Arbetsmarknad, Migration och Etniska Relationer (AMER) vid Växjö universitet, Växjö: Växjö University Press , 2006, p. 10-Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Situation for carers of the elderly in Sweden2008In: Studies of Community Welfare: Chiiki Fukushi Kenkyu, no 38, p. 72-83Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In most societies informal care of the elderly (often given by a relative) plays an important role, this article describes the situation and support for carers that exist in Sweden. The description is partly based on the results from the evaluation of a project (“Anhörig 300”) aimed to develop support for carers in the County of Kronoberg as well as from information and documents. Four different typical situations for carers are identified and is an indication of how different situations for carers can be. In the future the support for carers must be paid attention to and further developed. The National Development Plan for the Nursing and Care for elderly in Sweden suggest increased support for carers as a supplement to the public sector elderly care. It is important to involve voluntary organizations to break isolation and loneliness among carers.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

L1 speech production is often interrupted by hesitations revealed through a variety of phenomena ranging from silent pauses to comments. Most of these interruptions are caused by the action of a control system, a  “monitor“, which checks our speech internally while it is produced or after the production has reached the articulatory level. Speech production is checked against an internal model of lexical and grammatical correctness. If the demands of the monitor are not met, a repair may take place so that the speaker’s production reaches the expected level of correctness. It would seem that the result of constant interruptions, followed by repairs, would bring disorder into our speech but, in most cases, the listener is not disturbed by these interruptions, since his perception system brings order and re-establishes the linearity of the propositional content.

The speech of L2 learners is controlled during and after production. Even if the monitor follows the same pattern of work when controlling L2 production, the repair is not necessarily done in a similar way because the learner’s internal grammar and lexicon are not complete and cannot be consulted as quickly as L1 lexicon and grammar. L2 learners rely on a certain amount of acquired knowledge but they also need to be given the time to refer to learned rules and patterns because the retrieval of these has not yet been automaticized.  As teachers, we often resent hesitations as disturbing and as an indication of the learner’s incapacity to produce correct speech.

In this study, we observe the L2 speech production of learners of French and their behaviour when meeting linguistic problems. The study is concentrated on repetitions and recasts produced when the learner hesitates and shows signs of an effort to retrieve learned knowledge. These repetitions and recasts are presented as different hypotheses put forward by the learner in his/her attempts to reach a solution to a linguistic problem. They show the L2 speech production as a step-by-step process. The focus here is on repetitions and recasts in connection with French  -ment-adverbs.

"What Am I? What Do I Want?": An analysis of The Glassy Sea by Marian Engel2001Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The essay is a study of The Glassy Sea by the Canadian author Marian Engel. The novel focuses on the main character's self exploration ans her search for identity. A Jungian approach to this novel is particularly appropriate since the author makes use of several achetypes and symbols. Moreover, the novel is presented in an introspective manner that brings to the mind the method of self-examination used in psychoanalysis. The essay studies the development of the main character's identity, Rita. Her quest can be summed up in two questions: Who is she and what does she want to do with her life? We follow Rita through a series of steps that will lead her to maturity and to an independant life. Her development takes place in stages and the essay focuses on four of these. There is a regularity of pattern at each stage; Rita lives in different homes where she is under the influence of a mentor, whose role model she accepts at first, submits to and finally rejects. Among the archetypal images that appear in the novel, we find that the mother archetype is omnipresent and that Rita's growth progress is strongly connected to the mother complex. The author also makes use of the egg, the rose and the sea symbols to underline certain aspects of Rita's development. The essay seeks to connect Rita's developmental phases to the initiation rituals and the individuation process described by Jung.

Skriva sig till läsning: hinder och möjligheter med datorn som verktyg2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Bakgrundsmusikens påverkan i klassrummet: Ur ett lärarperspektiv2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Resultatet samlades in vid två intervjutillfällen per lärare.

    Abstract [sv]

Small children’s ways off communication when they play.

Får man spela fel?: Studier kring improvisationens betydelse i musikundervisning.2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Musical improvisation is an infinite artistic well. It helps the musician to make a personal performance and lets the music reflect the inner feelings. It is a language with which the performer can adapt the formulation to the specific situation. Yet so many have fear and respect when facing the phenomenon. In this study Dan Alkenäs discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using musical improvisation as a pedagogical method in school education. During a semester Alkenäs has, together with music teacher Bitten Löfgren and a group of pupils, studied what results are to be expected when teachers let musical improvisation have a leading role in music lessons. He discusses the creative working environment and the pupils’ ability to put theory into practice. One leading theme is the discussion of the common view of musicality. Alkenäs argues that it is important for a music teacher in a democratic school, with children from different kinds of cultures and backgrounds, to be flexible and adjust the lessons according to the individuals in the group. The study shows that this pedagogy, among other things, has a positive effect on interaction between students with different interest, levels of knowledge and potentials.

Praktisk matematik ur ett lärarperspektiv2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this paper is to get an idea about the interaction between persons sitting in a wheelchair and the society. We have carried through some literary studies to complement the methods we have chosen. We have interviewed a person who is sitting in a wheelchair to get that persons perspective. We have also carried through a participated observation with ourselves sitting in wheelchairs. Our purpose with these methods was to examine how a person sitting in a wheelchair interacts, verbally, non-verbally as well as how the physical environment is adapted. From a person sitting in a wheelchairs perspective the physical environment lacked in adjustment. In some public buildings it wasn’t possible even to get in through the front entrance because of the high steps. The practicability in some of these buildings was limited. We experienced a friendly interaction for most part of the situations. People held up doors for us and asked us if we wanted help in various situations. In some situations we felt like the kindness surpassed into fawning. In passing of people we felt like we didn’t get eye contact with that many of them. They often looked away as if they were scared to stare at us. The person we interviewed thinks that this deviant behaviour isn’t anything that he or she takes notice of because he or she has been sitting in a wheelchair for such a long time.

Specialundervisning som hjälp för att uppnå målen

Remedial teaching as a help reaching the goals

    Abstract

Wavelet Based Forecasting Approach, with Application2009In: 2009 International Conference on Financial Theory and Engineering / [ed] Patrick Kellenberger, 2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we outline a framework for forecasting using maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) based multiresoulution analysis (MRA). This framework has been applied for forecasting the tourism arrival series from Denmark to Norway. We compare forecasted values obtained from modeling the data in the time domain with the forecasted values from the wavelet domain using the traditional Box-Jenkins methodology. In both cases, diagnostic tests have been conducted to insure the specification of the model. The results have shown that the wavelet based forecasts outperforms the traditional Box-Jenkins approach in term of forecasts accuracy.

Vigilance & Invisibility: Care in technologically intense environments2007Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on the relationship between technology and caring in technologically intense environments. The overall aim was to uncover the meaning of care in those environments as experienced by patients and caregivers. Moreover, the study aimed at finding a deeper understanding for the almost total dominance of technology in care in intensive care.

The thesis includes three empirical studies and one theoretical, philosophical study. The research was guided by a phenomenological and lifeworld theoretical approach. Research data consist of quantitative parameters and qualitative interviews with caregivers and patients. Data was analysed and synthesised with aim of seeking meaning through openness, sensitivity and a reflective attitude. The goal was to reach the general structure of the phenomenon and its meaning constituents.

The result shows that an intensive care unit is a cognitive and emotionally complex environment where caregivers are juggling a precarious handful of cards. Despite being constantly monitored and observed, intensive care patients express that they feel invisible. The patient and the apparatus easily meld into a unit, one item to be regulated and read. From the patients’ perspective, caregivers demonstrate keen vigilance over technological devices and measured parameters, but pay scant attention to their stories and experiences. Technology, with its exciting captive lure and challenging character, seduces the caregivers and lulls them into a fictive sense of security and safety. Technical tasks take precedence or have more urgency than caring behaviour.

A malaise settles on caregivers as they strive for garnering the security that technology promises. Yet simultaneously, insecurity creeps in as they read the patient’s biological data. Technical tasks take precedence over and seemingly are more urgent than showing care. Listening, inspiring trust, and promoting confidence no longer have high priority. Trying to communicate ‘through’ technology is so complex, that it is a difficult challenge to keep in perspective what or who is the focus; ‘seeing’ or caring. Technology should be like a catalyst; do its ‘thing’ and withdraw ‘unnoticed’.

This thesis has contributed in gaining deeper knowledge about care in technologically intense environments and the impact of technology. The main contribution is that caregivers need to be aware that the roar of technology silences the subtle attempts of the critically ill or injured person to give voice to his or her needs. In conclusion, the challenges for caregivers are to distinguish when to heighten the importance of the objective and measurable dimensions provided by technology and when to reduce their importance. In order to magnify the patients’ lived experiences. It is a question of balancing state-of-the-art technology with integrative and comprehensive care, of harmonizing the demands of subjectivity with objective signs.

JAG SKAR MIG FÖR ATT ORKA FINNAS TILL: - En litteraturstudie utifrån självbiografier om självskadande unga kvinnors upplevelser av lidande och välbefinnande2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In our paper we chose to study care management in the old age care. According to the law for the social services the needs of elderly should govern the assistance they are granted. But research has shown that municipal guidelines govern the assistance and that the elderly have to adjust their needs to them. Thus there is a discrepancy between law and practice. The aim of this study was to understand how care managers relate to municipal guidelines, laws and the requests of elderly when the application for assistance is established. We wanted to understand what strategies they use to deal with situations when the aforementioned factors are not consistent. The theoretical approaches we chose were Lipsky’s theory of street-level bureaucrats. The method we used was qualitative and consisted of six informal interviews made with care managers in the municipality of Växjö, Sweden. Based on our interviews we identified eight different themes: the availability of resources, directing conversations and the use of routines, legitimize decisions, legitimize through the possibility of entering an appeal, legitimize through constructing the client, the adaptation of the objectives to the possibilities to perform them, diminishing their capability and professionalism. Our conclusion was that the requests of elderly did govern their assistance, as long as they coincided with the municipal guidelines. If the requests fell outside the guidelines it often required medical or social reasons for granting them. The municipal guidelines were never abandoned to create a uniquely designed assistance.

Effekter av Arbetslivsfondens satsningar på småföretag1995Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

An Analysis of Lean Production practice in different countries2009In: Paper presented at the 5th Asia-Pacific Management Accounting Association Annual Forum, Beppu, Japan, October 31-November 2, 2009, 2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a tentative analysis of high-employee-involvement (HEI) production methods based on the main characteristics of practice theory, a type of social theory sketched by Bourdieu (1977), Giddens (1979), late Foucault and others. Our model for HEI methods is based on the Toyota Production System (TPS) or Lean Production (LP) due to the amount of knowledge available about these two systems, and their impact on world-wide production methods. This paper examines specific daily practices found in companies working with Lean/TPS and presents a categorization of the concepts included in the localization of practice.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter examines how traditional understandings of organizational cultural factors map into our understanding of the Toyota Production System.

Since the 1980s the business literature has used a number of concepts to understand organizational culture. The bulk of these concepts can be seen to fit into a general rubic comprising three elements: values/assumptions; behavioural norms; rites and rituals. We use this system of categories to review the Toyota Production System Archetype (TPS Archetype) with a general aim of assessing the degree to which the TPS Archetype participates in the broad spectrum of cultural elements comprehended by the 3-element rubric.

Studies by Ahrens (1996); Bhiami (2003) and Dahlgaard & Dahlgaard-Park (2006) shows that when new tools and management control systems are introduced, they need to be adopted to the existing corporate culture and management practice in order to become successful, and this is a general understanding that is widely shared. Our examination addresses the extent to which the TPS Archetype impounds both awareness of the relation between tools and culture as well as the cultural scope of the TPS Archetype tools.

Lean production and the role of the employee culture2008In: Paper presented at the American Accounting Association Annual Conference, Anaheim, USA, August 3-6, 2008, 2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There have been numerous studies on lean production and other technical aspects of lean. This paper does not deal with the technical aspects. In this paper we develop a model for understanding the functioning of modern lean production and management methods. Our focus is on the behaviors and actions needed by employees [managers and non-managers] to obtain the benefits of lean methods. Our model for lean methods is based on the Toyota Production System [TPS] due to the amount of knowledge available about it and its impact on production methods world-wide. Using our understanding of TPS we develop a prescriptive model of employee behavior and actions needed to support the use of TPS, and the organizational cultural aspects needed to support or encourage the employee interactions identified. A case study is used to develop the model.
